We review the Universal Extra-Dimensional Model compactified on a S1/Z2 orbifold, and the renormalisation group evolution of quark and lepton masses, mixing angles and phases both in the UED extension of the Standard Model and of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. We consider two typical scenarios: all matter fields propagating in the bulk, and matter fields constrained to the brane. The resulting renormalisation group evolution equations in these scenarios are compared with the existing results in the literature, together with their implications.
The evolution equations of the gauge and Yukawa couplings are derived for the two-loop renormalisation group equations in a five-dimensional SM compactified on a $S^1/Z_2$ to yield standard four space-time dimensions. Different possibilities can be discussed, however, we shall consider the limiting case in which all matter fields are localised on the brane. We will compare our two-loop results to the results found at one-loop level, and investigate the evolution of $\sin^2 θ_W$ in this scenario also.
We study how the recent ATLAS and CMS Higgs mass bounds affect the renormalization group running of the physical parameters in universal extra dimensions. Using the running of the Higgs self-coupling constant, we derive bounds on the cutoff scale of the extra-dimensional theory itself. We show that the running of physical parameters, such as the fermion masses and the CKM mixing matrix, is significantly restricted by these bounds. In particular, we find that the running of the gauge couplings cannot be sufficient to allow gauge unification at the cutoff scale.
We investigate a six-dimensional universal extra-dimensional model in the extension of an effective neutrino mass operator. We derive the β-functions and renormalization group equations for the Yukawa couplings, the Higgs self-coupling, and the effecive neutrino mass operator in this model. Especially, we focus on the renormalization group running of physical parameters such as the Higgs self-coupling and the leptonic mixing angles. The recent measurements of the Higgs boson mass by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations at the LHC as well as the current three-flavor global fits of neutrino oscillat…
We explore the impact of Renormalisation Group (RG) effects in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) interpretations of LHC measurements. We implement the RG running and mixing for the Wilson coefficients as obtained from the one-loop anomalous dimension matrix in the SMEFT into a Monte Carlo generator. This allows to consistently predict and combine in global fits collider observables characterised by different scales. As a showcase, we examine the impact of RG running in the strong coupling on the SMEFT predictions for $t \bar t$ production cross sections and differential distrib…
We study the renormalization group (RG) running of the neutrino masses and the leptonic mixing parameters in two different extra-dimensional models, namely, the Universal Extra Dimensions (UED) model and a model, where the Standard Model (SM) bosons probe an extra dimension and the SM fermions are confined to a four-dimensional brane. In particular, we derive the beta function for the neutrino mass operator in the UED model. We also rederive the beta function for the charged-lepton Yukawa coupling, and confirm some of the existing results in the literature. The generic features of the RG runni…
We determine from first principles the quark mass anomalous dimension in Nf=3 QCD between the electroweak and hadronic scales. This allows for a fully non-perturbative connection of the perturbative and non-perturbative regimes of the Standard Model in the hadronic sector. The computation is carried out to high accuracy, employing massless O(a)-improved Wilson quarks and finite-size scaling techniques. We also provide the matching factors required in the renormalisation of light quark masses from lattice computations with O(a)-improved Wilson fermions and a tree-level Symanzik improved gauge a…
We investigate the renormalisation group effects induced on neutrino mass and mixing parameters in a triplet-extended minimal supersymmetric standard model where a vector-like pair of hypercharge $\pm 1$ triplet superfields is added. We first rederive the one-loop renormalisation group equation for the effective neutrino mass operator and, for the case in which this operator originates solely from the decoupling of the triplets, the corresponding equations for neutrino masses, mixing parameters and CP-violating phases. We compare our results with the ones obtained previously, and quantify the …
We investigate compatibility between the stochastic infrared (IR) resummation of light test fields on inflationary spacetimes and renormalisation group running of the ultra-violet (UV) physics. Using the Wilsonian approach, we derive improved stochastic Langevin and Fokker-Planck equations which consistently include the renormalisation group effects. With the exception of stationary solutions, these differ from the naive approach of simply replacing the classical potential in the standard stochastic equations with the renormalisation group improved potential. Using this new formalism, we exemp…
A few years ago, it had been shown that effects stemming from renormalisation group running can be quite large in the scotogenic model, where neutrinos obtain their mass only via a 1-loop diagram (or, more generally, in many models in which the light neutrino mass is generated via quantum corrections at loop-level). We present a new computation of the renormalisation group equations (RGEs) for the scotogenic model, thereby updating previous results. We discuss the matching in detail, in particular in what regards the different mass spectra possible for the new particles involved. We furthermor…
We discuss the renormalisation properties of the full set of $ΔF=2$ operators involved in BSM processes, including the definition of RGI versions of operators that exhibit mixing under RG transformations. As a first step for a fully non-perturbative determination of the scale-dependent renormalization factors and their runnings, we introduce a family of appropriate Schrödinger Functional schemes, and study them in perturbation theory. This allows, in particular, to determine the NLO anomalous dimensions of all $ΔF=1,2$ operators in these schemes. Finally, we discuss the systematic uncertaintie…
We compute the one-loop renormalisation group running of the bosonic Standard Model effective operators to order $v^4/Λ^4$, with $v\sim 246$ GeV being the electroweak scale and $Λ$ the unknown new physics threshold. We concentrate on the effects triggered by pairs of the leading dimension-six interactions, namely those that can arise at tree level in weakly-coupled ultraviolet completions of the Standard Model. We highlight some interesting consequences, including the interplay between positivity bounds and the form of the anomalous dimensions; the non renormalisation of the $S$ and $U$ parame…
We study the renormalisation group running of the cosmological and the Newton constant, where the renormalisation scale is given by the inverse of the radius of the cosmological event horizon. In this framework, we discuss the future evolution of the universe, where we find stable de Sitter solutions, but also "big crunch"-like and "big rip"-like events, depending on the choice of the parameters in the model.
Functional renormalisation group approach is applied to a system of kaons with finite chemical potential. A set of approximate flow equations for the effective couplings is derived and solved. At high scale the system is found to be at the normal phase whereas at some critical value of the running scale it undergoes the phase transition (PT) to the phase with a spontaneously broken symmetry with the kaon condensate as an order parameter. The value of the condensate turns out to be quite sensitive to the kaon-kaon scattering length.
We investigate the impact on low energy flavour mixing phenomena of the renormalisation group running of parameters in supersymmetric theories. We have explicitly chosen flavour dependent supergravity couplings. The renormalisation group equations are displayed in general matrix form. We work in a scale dependent basis such that the hierarchy in the quark masses can be more easily utilised. Simple analytic solutions are provided in matrix form (for general boundary conditions) when only the third generation Yukawa couplings are retained in the renormalisation group equations. We solve the evol…
The standard theoretical framework to deal with weak decays of heavy mesons is the so-called weak effective Hamiltonian. It involves the short-distance Wilson coefficients, which depend on the renormalisation scale $μ$. For specific calculations one has to evolve the Wilson coefficients down from the electroweak scale $μ=M_W$ to the typical mass scale of the decay under consideration. This is done by solving a renormalisation group equation for the effective operator basis. In this paper the results of a consistent two-step running of the $c \to u \,\ell^+\ell^-$ Wilson coefficients for dimens…
We discuss a six dimensional mass generation for the neutrinos. Active neutrinos live on a three-brane and interact via a brane localized mass term with a bulk six-dimensional standard model singlet (sterile) Weyl fermion, the two dimensions being transverse to the three-brane. We derive the physical neutrino mass spectrum and show that the active neutrino mass and Kaluza-Klein masses have a logarithmic cutoff divergence related to the zero-size limit of the three-brane in the transverse space. This translates into a renormalisation group running of the neutrino masses above the Kaluza-Klein c…
The application of the exact renormalisation group to a many-fermion system with a short-range attractive force is studied. We assume a simple ansatz for the effective action with effective bosons, describing pairing effects and derive a set of approximate flow equations for the effective coupling including boson and fermionic fluctuations. The phase transition to a phase with broken symmetry is found at a critical value of the running scale. The mean-field results are recovered if boson-loop effects are omitted. The calculations with two different forms of the regulator was shown to lead to s…
We present a new method for renormalisation group improvement of the effective potential of a quantum field theory with an arbitrary number of scalar fields. The method amounts to solving the renormalisation group equation for the effective potential with the boundary conditions chosen on the hypersurface where quantum corrections vanish. This hypersurface is defined through a suitable choice of a field-dependent value for the renormalisation scale. The method can be applied to any order in perturbation theory and it is a generalisation of the standard procedure valid for the one-field case. I…
Using a physical renormalisation scheme we derive mass-dependent renormalisation group equations for the running of the Higgs quartic coupling within the Standard Model. Subsequently, we accurately take into account weak scale thresholds, resulting in a reduction of the error in the determination of the maximum $M_t$ required for absolute stability of the vacuum to 0.28 GeV. For the first time, we conclusively establish the fate of the electroweak vacuum, finding that absolute stability of the Higgs vacuum state is excluded at 99.98% C.L. We also discuss the consequences when this new result i…
The infra-red fixed points are determined for all the parameters of the MSSM. They dominate the renormalisation group running when the top-Yukawa is in the quasi-fixed point regime (i.e. large at the GUT scale). We examine this behaviour analytically, by solving the full set of one-loop renormalisation group equations in the approximation that the electroweak contributions are negligible, and also numerically. We find the quasi-fixed points for the top-quark trilinear couplings; A_{U_{α3}} = A_{U_{3α}}=-0.59 m_g independently of the input parameters at the unification scale. All the remaining …
We study the application of the exact renormalisation group to a many-fermion system with a short-range attractive force. We introduce a boson field to describe pairing effects, and take a simple ansatz for the effective action. We derive a set of approximate flow equations for the effective coupling including boson and fermionic fluctuations. The initial conditions are obtained by renormalising the interaction to fit the scattering length in vacuum. At some critical value of the running scale, the numerical solutions show a phase transition to a gapped phase. Standard results are recovered if…
The application of the nonperturbative renormalisation group approach to a system with two fermion species is studied. Assuming a simple ansatz for the effective action with effective bosons, describing pairing effects we derive a set of approximate flow equations for the effective coupling including boson and fermionic fluctuations. The case of two fermions with different masses but coinciding Fermi surfaces is considered. The phase transition to a phase with broken symmetry is found at a critical value of the running scale. The large mass difference is found to disfavour the formation of pai…
The application of the exact renormalisation group to symmetric as well as asymmetric many-fermion systems with a short-range attractive force is studied. Assuming an ansatz for the effective action with effective bosons, describing pairing effects a set of approximate flow equations for the effective coupling including boson and fermionic fluctuations has been derived. The phase transition to a phase with broken symmetry is found at a critical value of the running scale. The mean-field results are recovered if boson-loop effects are omitted. The calculations with two different forms of the re…
Neutrino mass sum rules are an important class of predictions in flavour models relating the Majorana phases to the neutrino masses. This leads, for instance, to enormous restrictions on the effective mass as probed in experiments on neutrinoless double beta decay. While up to now these sum rules have in practically all cases been taken to hold exactly, we will go here beyond that. After a discussion of the types of corrections that could possibly appear and elucidating on the theory behind neutrino mass sum rules, we estimate and explicitly compute the impact of radiative corrections, as thes…
We investigate the high-scale behaviour of Higgs sectors beyond the Standard Model, pointing out that the proper matching of the quartic couplings before applying the renormalisation group equations (RGEs) is of crucial importance for reliable predictions at larger energy scales. In particular, the common practice of leading-order parameters in the RGE evolution is insufficient to make precise statements on a given model's UV behaviour, typically resulting in uncertainties of many orders of magnitude. We argue that, before applying N-loop RGEs, a matching should even be performed at N-loop ord…
We analyze the one-loop renormalisation group equations for the parameters of the Higgs potential of a supersymmetric SU(5) model with first step of symmetry breaking involving an adjoint Higgs. In particular, we investigate the running of the parameters that decide the first step of symmetry breaking in an attempt to establish which symmetry-breaking scenarios would be most likely if the model is the effective low-energy description of some more fundamental theory. An infra-red fixed point is identified analytically. We show that it is located at the boundary between the region of Higgs param…
We perform a renormalisation group analysis of the next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model (NMSSM) based on the following constraints: two-loop gauge coupling unification at a variable scale $M_X$, running the gauge couplings through the low energy thresholds; universal soft supersymmetry breaking parameters; correct electroweak symmetry breaking. The phenomenological implications of our results include a standard model-like Higgs boson of mass in the range 70-140 GeV.
We study the fine tuning associated to a `Natural Supersymmetry' spectrum with stops, after RG running, significantly lighter than the first two generation sfermions and the gluino. In particular, we emphasise that this tuning should be measured with respect to the parameters taken to be independent at the assumed UV boundary of the renormalisation group flow, and improve the accuracy of previous approximate expressions. It is found that, if running begins at $10^{16}~\rm{GeV}$ $\left(10^5~\rm{GeV}\right)$, decreasing the UV stop mass below $0.75$ $\left(0.4\right)$ of the weak scale Majorana …
We develop a model of ours fitting the quark and lepton masses and mixing angles by removing from the model a Higgs field previously introduced to organise a large atmospheric mixing angle for neutrino oscillations. Due to the off-diagonal elements dominating in the see-saw neutrino mass matrix the large atmospheric mixing angle comes essentially by itself. It turns out that we have now only five adjustable Higgs field vacuum expectation values needed to fit all the masses and mixings order of magnitudewise taking into account the renormalisation group runnings in all sectors. The CHOOZ angle …
The electroweak mixing angle is a fundamental parameter of the theory of electroweak interactions. Its value has been measured precisely at the $\mathrm{Z}$-pole at colliders. In this contribution, we propose to exploit measurements of Neutral-Current Drell-Yan production at the Large Hadron Collider at large invariant dilepton masses to determine the energy scale dependence (running) of the electroweak mixing angle in the $\bar{\text{MS}}$ renormalisation scheme, $\sin^2θ_{W,\ell}^{\bar{\text{MS}}}(μ)$. Such a measurement can be used to confirm the Standard Model predictions for the $\bar{\te…
We present a Monte Carlo renormalisation group study of the SU(2) gauge theory with two Dirac fermions in the adjoint representation. Using the two lattice matching technique recently advocated and exploited in [arXiv:0907.0919], we measure the running of the coupling and the anomalous mass dimension.
The quark-gluon vertex in Landau gauge is studied in the quenched approximation using the Sheikholeslami-Wohlert (SW) fermion action with mean-field improvement coefficients in the action and for the quark fields. We see that the form factor that includes the running coupling is substantially enhanced in the infrared, over and above the enhancement arising from the infrared suppression of the quark propagator alone. We define two different momentum subtraction renormalisation schemes -- \MOMT (asymmetric) and \MOMB\ (symmetric) -- and determine the running coupling in both schemes. We find Lam…
We consider renormalisable models extended in the scalar sector by a generic scalar field in addition to the standard model Higgs boson field, and work out the effective theory for the latter in the decoupling limit. We match the full theory onto the effective theory at tree and one-loop levels, and concentrate on dimension-6 operators of the Higgs and electroweak gauge fields induced from such matching. The Wilson coefficients of these dimension-6 operators from tree-level matching are further improved by renormalisation group running. For specific $SU(2)_L$ representations of the scalar fiel…
Assuming that new physics effects are parametrized by the Standard-Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) written in a complete basis of up to dimension-6 operators, we calculate the CP-conserving one-loop amplitude for the decay $h\to γγ$ in general $R_ξ$-gauges. We employ a simple renormalisation scheme that is hybrid between on-shell SM-like renormalised parameters and running $\overline{\mathrm{MS}}$ Wilson coefficients. The resulting amplitude is then finite, renormalisation scale invariant, independent of the gauge choice ($ξ$) and respects SM Ward identities. Remarkably, the $S$-matrix am…
The radiatively-induced splitting of masses in electroweak multiplets is relevant for both collider phenomenology and dark matter. Precision two-loop corrections of $\mathcal{O}$(MeV) to the triplet mass splitting in the wino limit of the minimal supersymmetric standard model can affect particle lifetimes by up to $40\%$. We improve on previous two-loop self-energy calculations for the wino model by obtaining consistent input parameters to the calculation via two-loop renormalisation-group running, and including the effect of finite light quark masses. We also present the first two-loop calcul…
We consider ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric gauge theories in the conformal window. By applying a suitable matter superfield rescaling and a Weyl-transformation the renormalisation group running (matter and gauge field $Z$-factors) are absorbed into the metric. The latter becomes a function of the $Z$-factors. The Euler flow $Δa \equiv a_{\rm UV} - a_{\rm IR} |_{{\cal N}=1}$ is then obtained by free field theory computation with the non-trivial dynamics coming from expanding the Euler invariant in the flow dependent metric. The result is therefore directly obtained in terms of the infrared anomalo…
We present an updated analysis of the first-order phase transition associated with symmetry breaking in the early Universe in a classically scale-invariant model extended with a new SU(2) gauge group. Including recent developments in understanding supercooled phase transitions, we compute all of its characteristics and significantly constrain the parameter space. We then predict gravitational wave spectra generated during this phase transition and by computing the signal-to-noise ratio we conclude that this model is well testable (and falsifiable) with LISA. We also provide predictions for the…
We present an analysis of the low-energy implications of an intermediate scale ~10^{11} GeV string theory. We mainly focus on the evolution of the physical parameters under the renormalisation group equations (RGEs) and find several interesting new features that differ from the standard GUT scale or Planck scale scenarios. We give a general discussion of soft supersymmetry breaking terms in type I theories and then investigate the renormalization group running. In the dilaton domination scenario, we present the sparticle spectra, analyzing constraints from charge and colour breaking, fine tuni…
Focusing on four-Higgs interactions, we analyse the robustness of tree-level-derived positivity bounds on Standard Model effective field theory (SMEFT) operators under quantum corrections. Among other results, we demonstrate that: (i) Even in the simplest extensions of the Standard Model, e.g. with one new scalar singlet or with a neutral triplet, some positivity bounds are strictly violated; (ii) the mixing of the dimension-eight operators under renormalisation, which we compute here for the first time, can drive them out of their positivity region; (iii) the running of the dimension-eight in…
