In this article, a complete analysis of the three muonic lepton-flavour violating processes $μ\to e γ$, $μ\to 3e$ and coherent nuclear $μ\to e$ conversion is performed in the framework of an effective theory with dimension six operators defined below the electroweak symmetry breaking scale $m_W$. The renormalisation-group evolution of the Wilson coefficients between $m_W$ and the experimental scale is fully taken into account at the leading order in QCD and QED, and explicit analytic and numerical evolution matrices are given. As a result, muonic decay and conversion rates are interpreted as functions of the Wilson coefficients at any scale up to $m_W$. Taking the experimental limits on these processes as input, the phenomenology of the mixing effects is investigated. It is found that a considerable set of Wilson coefficients unbounded in the simplistic tree-level approach are instead severely constrained. In addition, correlations among operators are studied both in the light of current data and future experimental prospects.
We determine from first principles the quark mass anomalous dimension in Nf=3 QCD between the electroweak and hadronic scales. This allows for a fully non-perturbative connection of the perturbative and non-perturbative regimes of the Standard Model in the hadronic sector. The computation is carried out to high accuracy, employing massless O(a)-improved Wilson quarks and finite-size scaling techniques. We also provide the matching factors required in the renormalisation of light quark masses from lattice computations with O(a)-improved Wilson fermions and a tree-level Symanzik improved gauge a…
We investigate compatibility between the stochastic infrared (IR) resummation of light test fields on inflationary spacetimes and renormalisation group running of the ultra-violet (UV) physics. Using the Wilsonian approach, we derive improved stochastic Langevin and Fokker-Planck equations which consistently include the renormalisation group effects. With the exception of stationary solutions, these differ from the naive approach of simply replacing the classical potential in the standard stochastic equations with the renormalisation group improved potential. Using this new formalism, we exemp…
We apply the Local Discontinuous Galerkin discretisation to flow equations of the O(N)-model in the Local Potential Approximation. The improved stability is directly observed by solving the flow equation for various $N$ and space-time dimensions $d$. A particular focus of this work is the numerical discretisation and its implementation. The code is publicly available, and is explained in detail here. It is realised as a module within the high performance PDE framework DUNE.
Functional Renormalisation Group (FRG) equations are constructed for a simple Yukawa-model with discrete chiral symmetry, including also the effect of a nonzero composite fermion background beyond the conventional scalar condensate. The evolution of the effective potential of the model, generically depending on two invariants, is explored with help of power series expansions. Systematic investigation of the effect of a class of irrelevant operators on the lower (stability) bound allows a non-perturbative extension of the maximal cut-off value consistent with any given mass of the scalar field.
We present a new method for renormalisation group improvement of the effective potential of a quantum field theory with an arbitrary number of scalar fields. The method amounts to solving the renormalisation group equation for the effective potential with the boundary conditions chosen on the hypersurface where quantum corrections vanish. This hypersurface is defined through a suitable choice of a field-dependent value for the renormalisation scale. The method can be applied to any order in perturbation theory and it is a generalisation of the standard procedure valid for the one-field case. I…
We discuss the renormalisation properties of the full set of $ΔF=2$ operators involved in BSM processes, including the definition of RGI versions of operators that exhibit mixing under RG transformations. As a first step for a fully non-perturbative determination of the scale-dependent renormalization factors and their runnings, we introduce a family of appropriate Schrödinger Functional schemes, and study them in perturbation theory. This allows, in particular, to determine the NLO anomalous dimensions of all $ΔF=1,2$ operators in these schemes. Finally, we discuss the systematic uncertaintie…
Radiative symmetry breaking (RSB) is a theoretically appealing framework for the generation of mass scales through quantum effects. It can be successfully implemented in models with extended scalar and gauge sectors. We provide a systematic analysis of RSB in such models: we review the common approximative methods of studying RSB, emphasising their limits of applicability and discuss the relevance of the relative magnitudes of tree-level and loop contributions as well as the dependence of the results on the renormalisation scale. The general considerations are exemplified within the context of…
The $μ\to eγ$ decay in a systematic effective field theory approach with dimension 6 operators
We present an updated analysis of the first-order phase transition associated with symmetry breaking in the early Universe in a classically scale-invariant model extended with a new SU(2) gauge group. Including recent developments in understanding supercooled phase transitions, we compute all of its characteristics and significantly constrain the parameter space. We then predict gravitational wave spectra generated during this phase transition and by computing the signal-to-noise ratio we conclude that this model is well testable (and falsifiable) with LISA. We also provide predictions for the…
