By starting with Durand's double integral representation for a product of two Jacobi functions of the second kind, we derive an integral representation for a product of two Jacobi functions of the second kind in kernel form. We also derive a Bateman-type sum for a product of two Jacobi functions of the second kind. From this integral representation we derive integral representations for the Jacobi function of the first kind in both the hyperbolic and trigonometric contexts. From the integral representations for Jacobi functions, we also derive integral representations for products of limiting functions such as associated Legendre functions of the first and second kind, Ferrers functions and also Gegenbauer functions of the first and second kind. By examining the behavior of one of these products near singularities of the relevant functions, we also derive integral representations for single functions, including a Laplace-type integral representation for the Jacobi function of the second kind. Finally, we use the product formulas for the functions of the second kind to derive Nicholson-type integral relations for the sums of squares of Jacobi functions of the first and second kinds, and in a confluent limit, Laguerre functions of the first and second kinds, which generalize the relation $\expe^{ix}\expe^{-ix}=1$ to those functions.
Szmytkowski derived a certain integral with Gegenbauer polynomials. A natural generalization is to derive lookalike integrals with Jacobi polynomials. Six methods are treated to derive the first integral. The first method should be enough to prove the first integral, but by the other methods there arises remarkable formula such as par example a zero-balanced F3 Appell function which can be converted into a 2F1 hypergeometric function. Another three integrals complete the paper.
We recast Byerly's formula for integrals of products of Legendre polynomials. Then we adopt the idea to the case of Jacobi polynomials. After that, we use the formula to derive an asymptotic formula for integrals of products of Jacobi polynomials. The asymptotic formula is similar to an analogous one recently obtained by the first author and Jeff Geronimo for a different case. Thus, it suggests that such an asymptotic behavior is rather generic for integrals of products of orthogonal polynomials.
We investigate mixed Lusin area integrals associated with Jacobi trigonometric polynomial expansions. We prove that these operators can be viewed as vector-valued Calderón-Zygmund operators in the sense of the associated space of homogeneous type. Consequently, their various mapping properties, in particular on weighted $L^p$ spaces, follow from the general theory.
The purpose of this note is to characterize those orthogonal polynomials sequences $(P_n)_{n\geq0}$ for which $$ π(x)\mathcal{D}_q P_n(x)=(a_n x+b_n)P_n(x)+c_n P_{n-1}(x),\quad n=0,1,2,\dots, $$ where $\mathcal{D}_q$ is the Askey-Wilson operator, $π$ is a polynomial of degree at most 2, and $(a_n)_{n\geq0}$, $(b_n)_{n\geq0}$ and $(c_n)_{n\geq0}$ are sequences of complex numbers such that $c_n\neq0$ for $n=1,2,\dots$.
In this paper we generalize and specialize generating functions for classical orthogonal polynomials, namely Jacobi, Gegenbauer, Chebyshev and Legendre polynomials. We derive a generalization of the generating function for Gegenbauer polynomials through extension a two element sequence of generating functions for Jacobi polynomials. Specializations of generating functions are accomplished through the re-expression of Gauss hypergeometric functions in terms of less general functions. Definite integrals which correspond to the presented orthogonal polynomial series expansions are also given.
The Jacobi-Stirling numbers of the first and second kinds were introduced in 2006 in the spectral theory and are polynomial refinements of the Legendre-Stirling numbers. Andrews and Littlejohn have recently given a combinatorial interpretation for the second kind of the latter numbers. Noticing that these numbers are very similar to the classical central factorial numbers, we give combinatorial interpretations for the Jacobi-Stirling numbers of both kinds, which provide a unified treatment of the combinatorial theories for the two previous sequences and also for the Stirling numbers of both ki…
Is is shown in this paper that there is a connection between the Riemann zeta-function $\zf$ and the classical Jacobi's polynomials, i.e. the Legendre polynomials, Chebyshev polynomials of the first and the second kind,...
It is shown that the integrals of the Jacobi polynomials \begin{equation*}%\label{eq:Fn^J} \int_0^t (t-θ)^δP_n^{(α-\frac12,β-\frac12)}(\cos θ) \left(\sin \tfracθ2\right)^{2 α} \left(\cos \tfracθ2\right)^{2 β} dθ> 0 \end{equation*} for all $t \in (0,π]$ and $n \in \mathbb{N}$ if $δ\ge α+ 1$ for $α,β\in \mathbb{N}_0$ and $\max\{α,β\} > 0$. This proves a conjecture on the integral of the Gegenbauer polynomials in \cite{BCX} that implies the strictly positive definiteness of the function $θ\mapsto (t - θ)_+^δ$ on the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^{d-1}$ for $δ\ge \lceil \frac{d}{2}\rceil$ and the Polyà …
Discrete analogs of the classical Fourier-Jacobi transform are introduced and investigated. It involves series and integrals with respect to parameters of the Gauss hypergeometric function ${}_2F_1(a+in/2,a-in/2;\ c; -x^2 ), \ x >0, n \in \mathbb{N}, a,c > 0, i $ is the imaginary unit. The corresponding inversion formulas for suitable functions and sequences in terms of these series and integrals are established.
We design convergent multipoint Pade interpolation schemes to Cauchy transforms of non-vanishing complex densities with respect to Jacobi-type weights on analytic arcs, under mild smoothness assumptions on the density. We rely on our earlier work for the choice of the interpolation points, and dwell on the Riemann-Hilbert approach to asymptotics of orthogonal polynomials introduced by Kuijlaars, McLaughlin, Van Assche, and Vanlessen in the case of a segment. We also elaborate on the $\bar\partial$-extension of the Riemann-Hilbert technique, initiated by McLaughlin and Miller on the line to rel…
In the previous paper, we reviewed the Rosenhain's paper to the Jacobi's inversion problem for the genus two hyperelliptic integral. In this paper, we review the Göpel's paper to the Jacobi's inversion problem for the genus two hyperelliptic integral.
We prove a set of general theorems that provide new nonlocal constants and first integrals for nonlinear Jacobi-type ordinary differential equations. Applications include equations of the Painleve-Gambier classification.
The classical A. Markov inequality establishes a relation between the maximum modulus or the $L^{\infty}\left([-1,1]\right)$ norm of a polynomial $Q_{n}$ and of its derivative: $\|Q'_{n}\|\leqslant M_{n} n^{2}\|Q_{n}\|$, where the constant $M_{n}=1$ is sharp. The limiting behavior of the sharp constants $M_{n}$ for this inequality, considered in the space $L^{2}\left([-1,1], w^{(α,β)}\right)$ with respect to the classical Jacobi weight $w^{(α,β)}(x):=(1-x)^α(x+1)^β$, is studied. We prove that, under the condition $|α- β| < 4 $, the limit is $\lim_{n \to \infty} M_{n} = 1/(2 j_ν)$ where $j_ν$ i…
We establish an integral representations of a right inverses of the Askey-Wilson finite difference operator in an $L^2$ space weighted by the weight function of the continuous $q$-Jacobi polynomials. We characterize the eigenvalues of this integral operator and prove a $q$-analog of the expansion of $e^{ixy}$ in Jacobi polynomials of argument $x$. We also outline a general procedure of finding integral representations for inverses of linear operators.
Representation of analytic functions as convergent series in Jacobi polynomials $P_n^{(a,b)}$ is reformulated using a unified approach for almost all complex $a, b$. The coefficients of the series are given as usual integrals in the classical case (when $\Re a, \Re b >-1$), or by the Hadamard principal part of these integrals when they diverge. As an application it is shown that inhomogeneous hypergeometric equations do generically have a unique solution which is analytic at both singular points in the complex plane.
We construct a functional model (direct integral expansion) and study the spectra of certain periodic block-operator Jacobi matrices, in particular, of general 2D partial difference operators of the second order. We obtain the upper bound, optimal in a sense, for the Lebesgue measure of their spectra. The examples of the operators for which there are several gaps in the spectrum are given.
We have shown that in some region where the Euler integral of the first kind diverges, the Euler formula defines a generalized function. The connected of this generalized function with the Dirac delta function is found.
We derive a novel integral representations of Jacobi polynomials in terms of the Gauss hypergeometric function. Such representation is then used to give the explicit integral representation for the Heat kernel on the quantized Riemann sphere.
The classical form of Grüss' inequality was first published by G. Grüss in 1935 and gives an estimate of the difference between the integral of the product and the product of the integrals of two functions. After that many variants of this inequality appeared in the literature. The aim of this paper is to consider some Chebyshev-Grüss-type inequalities and apply them to Bernstein-Euler-Jacobi (BEJ) operators of first and second kind. First and second moments of the operators are used to explain the situation.
Generalized integral formulas involving the generalized modified k-Bessel function $J_{k,ν}^{c,γ,λ}\left( z\right) $ of first kind are expressed in terms generalized $k-$Wright functions. Some interesting special cases of the main results are also discussed
In this study, we obtain some new integral inequalities for different classes of convex functions by using some elementary inequalities and classical inequalities like general Cauchy inequality and Minkowski inequality.
For $r\in(0,1)$, the function $\K(r)=\int_0^{π/2}(1-r^2\sin^2t)^{-1/2}dt$ is known as the complete elliptic integral of the first kind. In this paper, we prove the absolute monotonicity of two functions involving $\K(r)$. As a consequence, we improve Alzer and Richards' result.
In this paper, we obtain inequalities for some integrals involving the modified Lommel function of the first kind $t_{μ,ν}(x)$. In most cases, these inequalities are tight in certain limits. We also deduce a tight double inequality, involving the modified Lommel function $t_{μ,ν}(x)$, for a generalized hypergeometric function. The inequalities obtained in this paper generalise recent bounds for integrals involving the modified Struve function of the first kind.
We obtain new inequalities for the modified Bessel function of the second kind $K_ν$ in terms of the gamma function. These bounds follow as special cases of inequalities that we derive for the kernel of the Krätzel integral transformation.
In the article, the complete elliptic integrals of the first and second kinds are bounded by using the power series expansions of some functions, the celebrated Wallis' inequality, and an integral inequality due to R. P. Agarwal, P. Cerone, S. S. Dragomir and F. Qi.
We consider a generalisation of a definite integral involving the Bessel function of the first kind. It is shown that this integral can be expressed in terms of the Fox-Wright function ${}_pΨ_q(z)$ of one variable. Some consequences of this representation are explored by suitable choice of parameters. In addition, two closed-form evaluations of infinite series of the Fox-Wright function are deduced.
Simple inequalities for some integrals involving the modified Struve function of the first kind $\mathbf{L}_ν(x)$ are established. In most cases, these inequalities have best possible constant. We also deduce a tight double inequality, involving the modified Struve function $\mathbf{L}_ν(x)$, for a generalized hypergeometric function.
Simple upper and lower bounds are established for the integral $\int_0^x\mathrm{e}^{-βu}u^νt_{μ,ν}(u)\,\mathrm{d}u$, where $x>0$, $0<β<1$, $μ+ν>-2$, $μ-ν\geq-3$, and $t_{μ,ν}(x)$ is the modified Lommel function of the first kind. Our bounds complement and improve on existing bounds for this integral, by either being sharper or increasing the range of validity. Our bounds also generalise recent bounds for an integral involving the modified Struve function of the first kind, and in some cases more a direct approach lead to sharper bounds when our general bounds are specialised to the modified St…
We consider matrix orthogonal polynomials related to Jacobi type matrices of weights that can be defined in terms of a given matrix Pearson equation. Stating a Riemann-Hilbert problem we can derive first and second order differential relations that these matrix orthogonal polynomials and the second kind functions associated to them verify. For the corresponding matrix recurrence coefficients, non-Abelian extensions of a family of discrete Painlevé d-PIV equations are obtained for the three term recurrence relation coefficients.
The elliptic integral and its various generalizations are playing very important and basic role in different branches of modern mathematics. It is well known that they cannot be represented by the elementary transcendental functions. Therefore, there is a need for sharp computable bounds for the family of integrals. In this paper, by virtue of two new tools, we study monotonicity and convexity of certain combinations of the complete elliptic integrals of the first kind, and obtain new sharp bounds and inequalities for them. In particular, we prove that the function $\mathcal{K}\left( \sqrt{% x…
In this paper we obtain a set of five new transmutations of the mother formula. Further, we obtain the second set of ten exact metafunctional equations by crossbreeding on every two elements of the previous set. Elements of the last set represent a kind of synergetic formulae describing cooperative interactions between corresponding sets of values of basic classical functions.
We study $β$-Jacobi diffusion processes on alcoves in $\mathbb R^N$, depending on 3 parameters. Using elementary symmetric functions, we present space-time-harmonic functions and martingales for these processes $(X_t)_{t\ge0}$ which are independent from one parameter. This leads to a formula for $\mathbb E(\prod_{i=1}^N (y-X_{t,i}))$ in terms of classical Jacobi polynomials. For $t\to\infty$ this yields a corresponding formula for Jacobi ensembles and thus Aomoto's Selberg integral.
As a contribution to the Ramanujan theory of elliptic functions to alternative bases, Li-Chien Shen has shown how analogues of the Jacobian elliptic functions may be derived from incomplete hypergeometric integrals in signatures three and four. We determine precisely the signatures in which the Jacobian analogues or their squares are indeed elliptic.
In this paper we study mixed norm boundedness for fractional integrals related to Laplace--Beltrami operators on compact Riemannian symmetric spaces of rank one. The key point is the analysis of weighted inequalities for fractional integral operators associated to trigonometric Jacobi polynomials expansions. In particular, we find a novel sharp estimate for the Jacobi fractional integral kernel with explicit dependence on the type parameters.
In this paper, we establish several asymptotical bounds for the complete elliptic integrals of the second kind $\mathcal{E}(r)$, and improve the well-known conjecture $\mathcal{E}(r)>π[(1+(1-r^2)^{3/4})/2]^{2/3}/2$ for all $r\in(0,1)$ proposed by M. Vuorinen.
Li et al. give an integral formula for the Catalan-Qi number of the second kind. They show that this integral can be written as a summation with double factorials. In this paper the integral is reduced to a product of the Catalan number and a hypergeometric function. This hypergeometric function can be written as an associated Legendre polynomial of the first kind. There are also connections with the incomplete Beta function and the Gegenbauer polynomials. In the last section a related integral is calculated.
In this work we construct uniform asymptotic expansion of $\sn(t|m)$ - Jacobi when $m\to1-0$. The constructed expansion is valid over more than a half of period. The turning point is included into the interval of validity for the approximation. In addition we obtain the asymptotic formula for elliptic integral of the first kind and discuss the differences with the same formula from a handbook.
For the Chebyshev-Stirling numbers, a special case of the Jacobi-Stirling numbers, asymptotic formulae are derived in terms of a local central limit theorem. The underlying probabilistic approach also applies to the classical Stirling numbers of the second kind. Thereby a supplement of the asymptotic analysis for these numbers is established.
In the paper, the author establishes an integral representation and properties of Bernoulli numbers of the second kind and reveals that the generating function of Bernoulli numbers of the second kind is a Bernstein function on $(0,\infty)$.
In the paper, the author establishes an integral representation for Cauchy numbers of the second kind, finds the complete monotonicity, minimality, and logarithmic convexity of Cauchy numbers of the second kind, and presents some inequalities for determinants and products of Cauchy numbers of the second kind.
In this paper, we prove a new integral representation for the Bessel function of the first kind $J_μ(z)$. This formula generalizes to any $μ,z\in\mathbb{C}$ the classical representations of Bessel and Poisson.
A Fourier-type integral representation for Bessel's function of the first kind and complex order is obtained by using the Gegenbuaer extension of Poisson's integral representation for the Bessel function along with a trigonometric integral representation of Gegenbauer's polynomials. This representation lets us express various functions related to the incomplete gamma function in series of Bessel's functions. Neumann series of Bessel functions are also considered and a new closed-form integral representation for this class of series is given. The density function of this representation is simpl…
