We study the stability of composite waves consisting of a shock profile and a rarefaction wave for the one-dimensional isothermal Navier--Stokes--Poisson (NSP) system, which describes the ion dynamics in a collision-dominated plasma. More precisely, we prove that if the initial data are sufficiently close in the $H^2$ norm to the Riemann data corresponding to a solution consisting of a shock and a rarefaction wave of the associated quasi-neutral Euler system, then the solution to the Cauchy problem for the NSP system converges, up to a dynamical shift, to a superposition of the corresponding shock profile and the rarefaction wave as time tends to infinity. Our proof is based on the method of $a$-contraction with shifts, which has recently been applied to the Navier--Stokes equations to establish the asymptotic stability of composite waves. To adapt this method to the NSP system, we employ a modulated relative functional introduced in our previous work on the stability of single shock profiles.
The asymptotic stability of rarefaction wave for 1-d relaxed compressible isentropic Navier-Stokes equations is established. For initial data with different far-field values, we show that there exists a unique global in time solution. Moreover, as time goes to infinity, the obtained solutions are shown to converge uniformly to rarefaction wave solution of $p$-system with corresponding Riemann initial data. The proof is based on $L^2$ energy methods.
The vanishing viscosity limit of the two-dimensional (2D) compressible isentropic Navier-Stokes equations is studied in the case that the corresponding 2D inviscid Euler equations admit a planar rarefaction wave solution. It is proved that there exists a family of smooth solutions for the 2D compressible Navier-Stokes equations converging to the planar rarefaction wave solution with arbitrary strength for the 2D Euler equations. A uniform convergence rate is obtained in terms of the viscosity coefficients away from the initial time. In the proof, the hyperbolic wave is crucially introduced to …
The uniqueness of entropy solution for the compressible Euler equations is a fundamental and challenging problem. In this paper, the uniqueness of a composite wave of shock and rarefaction of 1-d compressible Euler equations is proved in the inviscid limit of compressible Navier-Stokes equations. Moreover, the relative entropy around the original Riemann solution consisting of shock and rarefaction under the large perturbation is shown to be uniformly bounded by the framework developed in \cite{Kang-Vasseur-2021-Invent}. The proof contains two new ingredients: 1) a cut-off technique and the ex…
We prove the time-asymptotic stability toward planar rarefaction wave for the three-dimensional full compressible Navier-Stokes equations in an infinite long flat nozzle domain $\mathbb{R}\times\mathbb{T}^2$. Compared with one-dimensional case, the proof here is based on our new observations on the cancellations on the flux terms and viscous terms due to the underlying wave structures, which are crucial to overcome the difficulties due to the wave propagation along the transverse directions $x_2$ and $x_3$ and its interactions with the planar rarefaction wave in $x_1$ direction.
Stability of Superposition of Viscous Contact Wave and Rarefaction Waves for Compressible Navier-Stokes System with Degenerate Heat-Conductivity and Large-Data
We study the large-time asymptotic behavior of solutions toward the combination of a viscous contact wave with two rarefaction waves for the compressible non-isentropic Navier-Stokes equations coupling with the Maxwell equations through the Lorentz force (called the Navier-Stokes-Maxwell equations). It includes the electrodynamic effects into the dissipative structure of the hyperbolic-parabolic system and turns out to be more complicated than that in the simpler compressible Navier-Stokes equations. Based on a new observation of the specific structure of the Maxwell equations in the Lagrangia…
We study the asymptotic stability of a planar rarefaction wave (in the $ x_1 $- direction) for the 3-d isentropic Navier-Stokes equations, where the initial perturbation is periodic on the torus $ \mathbb{T}^3 $ with zero average. To solve this Cauchy problem in which the initial data is periodic with respect to only $ x_2 $ and $ x_3 $ but not to $ x_1, $ we construct a suitable ansatz carrying the oscillations of the solution in the $ x_1 $- direction, but remaining to be periodic in the transverse $ x_2 $- and $ x_3 $- directions. In such a way, the difference between the ansatz and the sol…
Considering the space-periodic perturbations, we prove the time-asymptotic stability of the composite wave of a viscous contact wave and two rarefaction waves for the Cauchy problem of 1-D compressible Navier-Stokes equations in this paper. This kind of perturbations keep oscillating at the far field and are not integrable. The key is to construct a suitable ansatz carrying the same oscillation %eliminating the oscillation of the solution as in \cite{HuangXuYuan2020,HuangYuan2021}, but due to the degeneration of contact discontinuity, the construction is more subtle. We find a way to use the s…
It is well-known that the rarefaction wave, one of the basic wave patterns to the hyperbolic conservation laws, is nonlinearly stable to the one-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations (cf. [14,15,12,17]). In the present paper we proved the time-asymptotically nonlinear stability of the planar rarefaction wave to the two-dimensional compressible and isentropic Navier-Stokes equations, which gives the first stability result of the planar rarefaction wave to the multi-dimensional system with physical viscosities.

Global stability of superposition of viscous contact wave and rarefaction waves for compressible Navier-Stokes system with temperature-dependent transport coefficients and large data
We study the vanishing dissipation limit of the three-dimensional (3D) compressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier equations to the corresponding 3D full Euler equations. Our results are twofold. First, we prove that the 3D compressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier equations admit a family of smooth solutions that converge to the planar rarefaction wave solution of the 3D compressible Euler equations with arbitrary strength. Second, we obtain a uniform convergence rate in terms of the viscosity and heat-conductivity coefficients. For this multi-dimensional problem, we first need to introduce the hyperbolic wa…
Vanishing viscosity limit to the planar rarefaction wave with vacuum for 3-D full compressible Navier-Stokes equations with temperature-dependent transport coefficients
We prove the time-asymptotic stability of composite waves consisting of the superposition of a viscous shock and a rarefaction for the one-dimensional compressible barotropic Navier-Stokes equations. Our result solves a long-standing problem first mentioned in 1986 by Matsumura and Nishihara in [25]. The same authors introduced it officially as an open problem in 1992 in [26] and it was again described as very challenging open problem in 2018 in the survey paper [23]. The main difficulty is due to the incompatibility of the standard anti-derivative method, used to study the stability of viscou…
We show that the Navier-Stokes as well as a random perturbation of this equation can be derived from a stochastic variational principle where the pressure is introduced as a Lagrange multiplier. Moreover we describe how to obtain corresponding constants of the motion.
In this paper, we rigorously derive the compressible one-fluid Navier-Stokes equation from the scaled compressible two-fluid Navier-Stokes-Maxwell equations locally in time under the assumption that the initial data are well prepared. We justify the singular limit by proving the uniform decay of the error system, which is obtained by elaborate energy estimates.
The three-dimensional Navier-Stokes-$α$ model for fast rotating geophysical fluids is considered. The Navier-Stokes-$α$ model is a nonlinear dispersive regularization of the exact Navier-Stokes equations obtained by Lagrangian averaging and tend to the Navier-Stokes equations as $α\rightarrow 0^+$. We estimate upper bounds for the dimensions of global attractors and study the dependence of the dimensions on the parameter $α$. All the estimates are uniform in $α$, and our estimate of attractor dimensions remain finite when $α\rightarrow 0^+$.
We study Caccioppoli's inequalities of the non-stationary Stokes equations and Navier-Stokes equations. Our analysis is local near boundary and we prove that, in contrast to the interior case, the Caccioppoli's inequalities of the Stokes equations and the Navier-Stokes equations, in general, fail near boundary.
An algebraic upper bound for the decay rate of solutions to the Navier-Stokes and Navier-Stokes-Coriolis equations in the critical space $\dot{H} ^{\frac{1}{2}} (\mathbb{R} ^3)$ is derived using the Fourier Splitting Method. Estimates are framed in terms of the decay character of initial data, leading to solutions with algebraic decay and showing in detail the roles played by the linear and nonlinear parts.
In this paper, we first prove the global well-posedness of a scaled anisotropic Navier-Stokes system and the hydrostatic Navier-Stokes system in a 2-D striped domain with small analytic data in the tangential variable. Then we justify the limit from the anisotropic Navier-Stokes system to the hydrostatic Navier-Stokes system with analytic data.
In this paper, we shall establish the global well-posedness, the space-time analyticity of the Navier-Stokes equations for a class of large periodic data $u_0 \in BMO^{-1}(\mathbb{R}^3)$. This improves the classical result of Koch \& Tataru \cite{koch-tataru}, for the global well-posedness with small initial data $u_0 \in BMO^{-1}(\mathbb{R}^n)$.
We study the stationary Stokes and Navier-Stokes equations with non-homogeneous Navier boundary condition in a bounded domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^{3}$ of class $\mathcal{C}^{1,1}$. We prove existence, uniqueness of weak and strong solutions in $\mathbf{W}^{1,p}(Ω)$ and $\mathbf{W}^{2,p}(Ω)$ for all $1<p<\infty$ considering minimal regularity on the friction coefficient $α$. Moreover, we deduce uniform estimates on the solution with respect to $α$ which enables us to analyze the behavior of the solution when $α\rightarrow \infty$.
We introduce a framework to justify hydrodynamic limits of the Vlasov-Navier-Stokes system. We specifically study high friction regimes, which take into account the fact that particles of the dispersed phase are light (resp. small) compared to the fluid part, and lead to the derivation of Transport-Navier-Stokes (resp. Inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes) systems.
In the note, a local regularity condition for axisymmetric solutions to the non-stationary 3D Navier-Stokes equations is proven. It reads that axially symmetric energy solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations have no Type I blowups.
Fundamental solutions to the time-periodic Stokes and Oseen linearizations of the Navier-Stokes equations in dimension $n\geq 2$ are investigated. Integrability properties and pointwise estimates are established.
In this paper, we justify the limit from the Navier-Stokes system in a thin domain to the hydrostatic Navier-Stokes/Prandtl system for the convex initial data with Gevrey 9/8 regualrity in $x$.
These notes are dedicated to the analysis of the one-dimensional free-congested Navier-Stokes equations. After a brief synthesis of the results obtained in [4] related to the existence and the asymptotic stability of partially congested profiles associated to the soft congestion Navier-Stokes system, we present a first local well-posedness result for the one-dimensional free-congested Navier-Stokes equations.
In this paper, we study the upper bound of the time decay rate of solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations and generalized Navier-Stokes equations with damping term $|u|^{β-1}u$ ($β>1$) in $\mathbb{R}^3$.
We study 2D Navier-Stokes equations with a constraint on $L^2$ energy of the solution. We prove the existence and uniqueness of a global solution for the constrained Navier-Stokes equation on $\R^2$ and $\T$, by a fixed point argument. We also show that the solution of constrained Navier-Stokes converges to the solution of Euler equation as viscosity $ν$ vanishes.
