Here we suggest a new local action describing arbitrary integer spin-$s$ massless particles in terms of only two symmetric fields $φ$ and $α$ of rank-$s$ and $(s-3)$ respectively. It is an unconstrained version of the Fronsdal theory where the double traceless constraint on the physical field is evaded via a rank-$(s-4)$ Weyl like symmetry. The constrained higher spin diffeomorphism is enlarged to full diffeomorphism via the Stueckelberg field $α$ through an appropriate field redefinition. After a partial gauge fixing where the Weyl symmetry is broken while preserving diffeomorphisms, the field equations reproduce, for arbitrary integer spin-$s$, diffeomorphism invariant equations of motion previously obtained via a truncation of the spectrum of the open bosonic string field theory in the tensionless limit. In the $s=4$ case we show that the functional integration over $α$ leads to a unique non local Weyl and diffeomorphism invariant action given only in terms of the physical field $φ$ whose spectrum is confirmed via an analysis of the analytic structure of the spin-4 propagator for which we introduce a complete basis of projection and transition non local differential operators. We also show that the elimination of $α$ after the Weyl gauge fixing leads to a non local diffeomorphism invariant action previously obtained in the literature.
We construct simple unconstrained Lagrangian formulations for massless higher spin fields in flat space of arbitrary dimension and on anti de Sitter background. Starting from the triplet equations of Francia and Sagnotti, which describe a chain of spin modes, we introduce an auxiliary field and find appropriate gauge invariant constraints that single out the spin-s mode. The resulting quartet of fields, thus describing an irreducible representation of the Poincare group, is used to construct simple Lagrangian formulations, which are local, free from higher derivative terms and use equal number…
New method (arXiv:2104.11930) is applied to construct cubic interactions of massless spin 4 and real scalar fields. In contrast with the case of massless spin 3 fields (arXiv:2208.05700, 2209.03678, 2210.02842) the procedure requires to use an unconstrained formulation (arXiv:0702.161) for the Fronsdal theory. It is shown that in the unconstrained formulation there exists a four-parameter family of cubic interactions between massless spin 4 and real scalar fields, which contains four derivatives in vertices and is invariant with respect to the original gauge transformation. These vertices cont…
We consider unconstrained formulation of the higher spin gauge theory in anti de Sitter (AdS) spacetime, given by actions [1, 2], and provide on-shell supersymmetry transformations for the $\mathcal{N}=1$ unconstrained massless higher spin supermultiplet in four-dimensional AdS$_4$. Such an irreducible supermultiplet $(Φ_1, Φ_2 \,; Ψ_1,Ψ_2)$ contains a pair of bosonic fields, with opposite parity, which are generating functions (infinite collection of totally symmetric real tensor fields of all integer rank $s= 0, 1, \ldots, \infty$), as well as two fermionic fields, which have opposite signs …
We generalize the unconstrained description of free massless higher spin fields previously developed in [Nucl.Phys. B 779 (2007) 155] to the case of free massive higher spin fields in a flat space of arbitrary dimension. The Lagrangian is given in an easy-to-handle form for an arbitrary value of spin. It is local, free from higher derivative terms, and involves a minimal number of auxiliary fields needed for an unconstrained gauge invariant description of a free massive higher spin field in arbitrary dimension.
We describe the ``universal'' action for massless superfields of all superspins in N = 1, D = 4 anti-de Sitter superspace as a gauge theory of unconstrained superfields taking their values in the commutative algebra of analytic functions over a one-sheeted hyperboloid in $R^{3,1}$. The action is invariant under N = 2 supersymmetry transformations which form a closed algebra off the mass-shell.
Massive arbitrary spin supermultiplets and massless (scalar and spin one-half) supermultiplets of the N=2 Poincare superalgebra in three-dimensional flat space are considered. Both the integer spin and half-integer spin supermultiplets are studied. For such massive and massless supermultiplets, a formulation in terms of light-cone gauge unconstrained superfields defined in a momentum superspace is developed. For the supermultiplets under consideration a superspace first derivative representation for all cubic interaction vertices is obtained. A superspace representation for dynamical generator…
N-extended massless arbitrary integer and half-integer spin supermultiplets in four dimensional flat space are studied in the framework of light-cone gauge formalism. For such multiplets, by using light-cone momentum superspace, we build unconstrained light-cone gauge superfield formulation. The superfield formulation is used to develop a superspace representation for all cubic interactions vertices of the N-extended massless supermultiplets. Our suitable treatment of the light-cone gauge superfields allows us to obtain attractively simple superspace representation for the cubic interaction ve…
We apply an unconstrained formulation of bosonic higher spin fields to study interactions of these fields with a bosonic field using new method for the deformation procedure. It is proved that local vertices of any order containing one higher spin $s$ field and arbitrary number of scalar fields and being invariant under original gauge transformations are described with the help of one local totally symmetric $(s-2)$-rank tensor of scalar fields. This tensor is explicitly constructed for particular cases related to cubic vertices for spin $s$ and vertices of an arbitrary order for spin $s=4$.
The BRST approach is applied to the description of irreducible massless higher spins representations of the Poincare group in arbitrary dimensions. The total system of constraints in such theory includes both the first and the second class constraints. The corresponding nilpotent BRST charge contains terms up to the seventh degree in ghosts.
In the framework of light-cone gauge formulation, massless arbitrary spin N=1 supermultiplets in four-dimensional flat space are considered. We study both the integer (super)spin and half-integer (super)spin supermultiplets. For such supermultiplets, formulation in terms of unconstrained light-cone gauge superfields defined on chiral momentum superspace is used. Superfield representation for all cubic interaction vertices of the supermultiplets is obtained. Representation of the cubic vertices in terms of component fields is derived. Realization of relativistic symmetries of N=1 Poincare super…
We present an alternative method to explore the off-shell component structure of theories that describe half-integer super-helicities Y=s+1/2 (where sis any positive integer). We use it to derive the component action, component SUSY transformation laws, and count the component-level degrees of freedom involved. This counting will give us clues about N=2 representations. The foundation of the process relies on the superfield equations of motion, generated by variation of a superspace action expressed in terms of prepotentials. Using this approach we reproduce the half-integer super-helicity sup…
We present an alternative method of exploring the component structure of an integer super-helicity Y=s (for any integers) irreducible representation of the Super-Poincare group. We use it to derive the component action and the SUSY transformation laws. The effectiveness of this approach is based on the equations of motion and their properties, like Bianchi identities. These equations are generated by the superspace action when it is expressed in terms of prepotentials. For that reason we reproduce the superspace action for integer superspin, using unconstrained superfields. The appropriate, to…
We propose a new world-line Lagrangian model of the D=4 massless relativistic particle with continuous spin and develop its twistorial formulation. The description uses two Penrose twistors subjected to four first class constraints. After the first quantization of the world-line twistorial model, the wave function is defined by an unconstrained function on the two-dimensional complex affine plane. We find the twistor transform that determines the space-time field of the continuous spin particle through the corresponding twistor one, which plays the role of a prepotential. It is shown that this…
In the recent paper [1] the classification of non-unitary representations of the three dimensional superconformal group has been constructed. From AdS/CFT they must correspond to N=1 supermultiplets containing partially massless fields in $AdS_4$. Moreover, the simplest example of such supermultiplets which contains a partially massless spin-2 was explicitly constructed. In this paper we extend this result and develop explicit Lagrangian construction of general N=1 supermultiplets containing partially massless fields with arbitrary superspin. We use the frame-like gauge invariant description o…
The Penrose transform between twistors and the phase space of massless particles is generalized from the massless case to an assortment of other particle dynamical systems, including special examples of massless or massive particles, relativistic or non-relativistic, interacting or non-interacting, in flat space or curved spaces. Our unified construction involves always the \it{same} twistor Z^A with only four complex degrees of freedom and subject to the \it{same} helicity constraint. Only the twistor to phase space transform differs from one case to another. Hence a unification of diverse pa…
We solve Klein-Gordon equation for massless scalars on d+1 dimensional Minkowski (Euclidean) space in terms of the Cauchy data on the hypersurface t=0. By inserting the solution into the action of massless scalars in Minkowski (Euclidean) space we obtain the action of dual theory on the boundary t=0 which is exactly the holographic dual of conformally coupled scalars on d+1 dimensional (Euclidean anti) de Sitter space obtained in (A)dS/CFT correspondence. The observed equivalence of dual theories is explained using the one-to-one map between conformally coupled scalar fields on Minkowski (Eucl…
A new description of free massless superfields of arbitrary superspin $Y$ ($Y>1/2$) is proposed. Following the first-order philosophy, we relax some of the properties (reality, gauge redundancy) of the unconstrained higher spin prepotentials and we construct first and half order invariants quantities. These are used to write trivially invariant actions. Additional auxiliary superfields that play the role of spin connections are used to enforce a new local symmetry that restores the degrees of freedom.
Spinor description for the curvatures of $D=5$ Yang-Mills, Rarita-Schwinger and gravitational fields is elaborated. Restrictions imposed on the curvature spinors by the dynamical equations and Bianchi identities are analyzed. In the absence of sources symmetric curvature spinors with $2s$ indices obey first-order equations that in the linearized limit reduce to Dirac-type equations for massless free fields. These equations allow for a higher-spin generalization similarly to $4d$ case. Their solution in the form of the integral over Lorentz-harmonic variables parametrizing coset manifold $SO(1,…
The Maxwell theory can be written as a first order model with the help of a two-form auxiliary field, such master action allows the proof of duality between $1$-form and $D-3$ forms. Here we show that the replacement of the two-form auxiliary field by an arbitrary (non symmetric) rank-2 tensor leads to a new massless spin-1 dual theory in terms of a partially antisymmetric rank-3 tensor. In the massive spin-1 case we have a non symmetric generalization of the massive two-form theory (Kalb-Ramond). The coupling of the massive non symmetric spin-1 model to matter fields is investigated via maste…
We construct the action for the pure spinor superstring in the coset description of AdS_4 x CP^3 superspace, using the variables which solve the pure spinor condition. As a test of the consistency of the approach, we use the background field method to verify the absence of central charge at the second order in the expansion and to show the one-loop finiteness of the effective action.
We construct a concise gauge invariant formulation for massless, partially massless, and massive bosonic AdS fields of arbitrary symmetry type at the level of equations of motion. Our formulation admits two equivalent descriptions: in terms of the ambient space and in terms of an appropriate vector bundle, as an explicitly local first-order BRST formalism. The second version is a parent-like formulation that can be used to generate various other formulations via equivalent reductions. In particular, we demonstrate a relation to the unfolded description of massless and partially massless fields…
We describe the pure spinor string in the $AdS_5\times S^5$ using unconstrained matrices first used by Roiban and Siegel for the Green-Schwarz superstring.
Recently N. Berkovits, motivated by the supertwistor description of ${\cal N}=4 D=4$ super Yang-Mills, considered the generalization of the ${\cal N}=1 D=4$ $θ$-twistor construction to D=10 and applied it for a compact covariant description of ${\cal N}=1 D=10$ super Yang-Mills. This supports the relevance of the $θ$-twistor as a supersymmetric twistor alternative to the well-known supertwistor. The minimal breaking of superconformal symmetry is an inherent property of the $θ$-twistor received from its fermionic components, described by a Grassmannian vector instead of a Grassmannian scalar in…
The detailed description of the method of the construction of the nilpotent BRST charges for nonlinear algebras of constraints appearing in the description of the massless higher spin fields on the $AdS_D$ background is presented. It is shown that the corresponding BRST charge is not uniquely defined, but this ambiguity has no impact on the physical content of the theory.
We develop a new twistorial field formulation of a massless infinite spin particle. Unlike our previous approach arXiv:1805.09706, the quantization of such a world-line infinite spin particle model is carried without any gauge fixing. As a result, we construct a twistorial infinite spin field and derive its helicity decomposition. Using the field twistor transform, we construct the space-time infinite (continuous) spin field, which depends on the coordinate four-vector and additional commuting Weyl spinor. The equations of motion for infinite spin fields in the cases of integer and half-intege…
A generalized twistor transform for spinning particles in 3+1 dimensions is constructed that beautifully unifies many types of spinning systems by mapping them to the same twistor, thus predicting an infinite set of duality relations among spinning systems with different Hamiltonians. Usual 1T-physics is not equipped to explain the duality relationships and unification between these systems. We use 2T-physics in 4+2 dimensions to uncover new properties of twistors, and expect that our approach will prove to be useful for practical applications as well as for a deeper understanding of fundament…

We develop doubled-coordinate field theory to determine the α' corrections to the massless sector of oriented bosonic closed string theory. Our key tool is a string current algebra of free left-handed bosons that makes O(D,D) T-duality manifest. While T-dualities are unchanged, diffeomorphisms and b-field gauge transformations receive corrections, with a gauge algebra given by an α'-deformation of the duality-covariantized Courant bracket. The action is cubic in a double metric field, an unconstrained extension of the generalized metric that encodes the gravitational fields. Our approach provi…
We review the unified description of massless spinning particles, living in spaces of constant curvature, in the framework of the pseudoclassical approach with a gauged $N$-extended worldline supersymmetry and a local $O(N)$ invariance.
Lagrangians for massive, unconstrained, higher-spin bosons and fermions are proposed. The idea is to modify the geometric, gauge invariant Lagrangians describing the corresponding massless theories by the addition of suitable quadratic polynomials. These polynomials provide generalisations of the Fierz-Pauli mass term containing all possible traces of the basic field. No auxiliary fields are needed.
Twistor phase spaces are used to provide a general description of the dynamics of a finite number of directly interacting massless spinning particles forming a closed relativistic massive and spinning system with an internal structure. A Poincare invariant canonical quantization of the so obtained twistor phase space dynamics is performed.
We provide a unified treatment of electric-magnetic duality, at the action level and with manifest Lorentz invariance, for massive, massless as well as partially-massless gravitons propagating in maximally symmetric spacetimes of any dimension n>3. For massive and massless fields, we complete previous analyses that use parent-action techniques by giving dual descriptions that enable direct counting of physical degrees of freedom in the flat and massless limit. The same treatment is extended to the partially-massless case, where the duality has been previously discussed in covariant form only a…
In their simplest form, metric-like Lagrangians for higher-spin massless fields display constrained gauge symmetries, unless auxiliary fields are introduced or locality is foregone. Specifically, in its standard incarnation, gauge invariance of Maxwell-like Lagrangians relies on parameters with vanishing divergence. We propose an alternative form of the corresponding local symmetry involving unconstrained parameters of mixed-symmetry type, described by rectangular two-row Young diagrams and entering high-derivative gauge transformations. The resulting gauge algebra appears to be reducible and …
We determine the current exchange amplitudes for free totally symmetric tensor fields $\vf_{μ_1 ... μ_s}$ of mass $M$ in a $d$-dimensional $dS$ space, extending the results previously obtained for $s=2$ by other authors. Our construction is based on an unconstrained formulation where both the higher-spin gauge fields and the corresponding gauge parameters $Λ_{μ_1 >... μ_{s-1}}$ are not subject to Fronsdal's trace constraints, but compensator fields $α_{μ_1 ... μ_{s-3}}$ are introduced for $s > 2$. The free massive $dS$ equations can be fully determined by a radial dimensional reduction from a …
We derive the component Lagrangian for the free $N$-extended on-shell massless higher spin supermultiplets in four-dimensional anti-de Sitter space. The construction is based on frame-like description of massless integer and half-integer higher spin fields. The massless supermultiplets are formulated for $N\leq 4k,$ where $k$ is a maximal integer or half-integer spin in the multiplet. The supertransformations that leave the Lagrangian invariant are found and it is shown that their algebra is closed on-shell.
String theory on AdS_3 x S^3 is studied in the hybrid formulation. We give a detailed description of the PSL(2|2) supergroup WZW model that underlies the background with pure NS-NS flux, and determine the BRST-cohomology corresponding to the massless string states. The resulting spectrum is shown to match exactly with the expected supergravity answer, including the sectors with small KK momentum on the sphere.
It is shown that dynamics of D+2 elements of the (super)diffeomorphism group in one (1+1 for the super) dimension describes the D - dimensional (spinning) massless relativistic particles. The coordinates of this elements (D+2 einbeins, D+2 connections and 1 additional common coordinate of higher dimensionality) play the role of coordinates, momenta and Lagrange multiplier, needed for the manifestly conformal and reparametrization invariant description of the D - dimensional (spinning) particle in terms of the D+2 - dimensional spacetime.
In this paper we extend a so called frame-like formulation of massless high spin particles to massive case. We start with two explicit examples of massive spin 2 and spin 3 particles and then construct gauge invariant description for arbitrary integer spin case. Similarly, for the fermionic case we start with first non-trivial example -- massive spin 5/2 particle and then construct gauge invariant description for arbitrary half-integer spin case. In all cases we consider massive particles in (A)dS spaces with arbitrary cosmological constant (including flat Minkowski space) and this allows one …
The components of the position operator, at a fixed time, for a massless and spinning particle with given helicity $λ$ described in terms of bosonic degrees of freedom have an anomalous commutator proportional to $λ$. The position operator generates translations in momentum space. We show that a ray-representation for these translations emerges due to the non-commuting components of the position operators and relate this to the Berry-phase for photons. The Tomita-Chiao experiment then gives support for this relativistic and quantum mechanical description of photons in terms of non-commuting po…
We rewrite the standard 4-dimensional Dirac equation in terms of quaternionic 2-component spinors, leading to a formalism which treats both massive and massless particles on an equal footing. The resulting unified description has the correct particle spectrum to be a generation of leptons, with the correct number of spin/helicity states. Furthermore, precisely three such generations naturally combine into an octonionic description of the 10-dimensional massless Dirac equation, as discussed in previous work.
We provide a review of gauge field theories with higher spin, focusing on the classical theory of massless bosons in flat Minkowski spacetime. A brief introduction to the concept of spin is provided along with a historical review of some of the most important problems and accomplishments in higher spin theory, followed by a review of familiar lower spin theories. Using a particularly elegant formalism, we examine the free higher spin theory and the theory coupled to a generic external current. For both of these theories, we review their constrained and the unconstrained formulation, focusing o…
We construct the Lagrangian description of arbitrary integer higher spin massless fields on the background of the D-dimensional anti-de Sitter space. The operator constraints in auxiliary Fock space corresponding to subsidiary conditions for irreducible unitary massless representations of the D-dimensional anti-de Sitter group are formulated. Unlike flat space, the algebra of the constraints turns out to be nonlinear and analogous to the $W_3$ algebra. We construct the nilpotent BRST charge for this nonlinear algebra and derive on its basis the correct field content and gauge invariant action …
Using a ``Superstrings with Torsion'' type description, we study a class of IIB orientifolds in which spacefilling O5 planes and D5 branes wrap the T^2 fiber in a warped modification of the product of 4D Minkowski space and a T^2 fibration. For the case that the base is T^4, we provide examples that preserve 4D N = 1, 2, and 3 supersymmetry, both with internal RR flux, and with a combination of internal RR and NS flux. In these examples, the internal geometries admit integrable complex structure; however, the almost complex structure selected by the supersymmetry conditions is nonintegrable in…
We study the consequences of including parity preserving matter for the effective dual theory corresponding to compact QED_3; in particular we focus on the effect of that contribution on the confinement-deconfinement properties of the system. To that end, we compare two recent proposals when massless fermions are included, both based on an effective anomalous dual model, but having global and local Z_2 symmetries, respectively. We present a detailed analysis to show that while for large mass fermions the global Z_2 symmetry is preferred, in the massless fermion case the local Z_2 scenario turn…
We construct a range of supersymmetric cubic vertices for three massless higher spin supermultiplets in the four-dimensional space. We use frame-like multispinor formalism, which allows to avoid most of the technical difficulties and provides a uniform description for bosons and fermions. Our work is based on the so-called Fradkin-Vasiliev formalism for construction of the cubic vertices, which requires the non-zero cosmological constant. Thus we first construct the vertices in AdS space and then consider the flat limit. We show that the AdS supersymmetric vertex is a sum of four elementary ve…
In this paper we construct a number of cubic interaction vertices for massless bosonic and fermionic higher spin fields in flat four dimensional space. First of all, we construct these cubic vertices in AdS_4 space using a so-called Fradkin-Vasiliev approach, which works only for the non-zero cosmological constant. Then we consider a flat limit taking care on all the higher derivative terms which FV-approach generates. We restrict ourselves with the four dimensions because this allows us to use the frame-like multispinor formalism which greatly simplifies all calculations and provides a descri…
In this paper we continue the investigations present in \cite{1}-\cite{3}. In particular, we extend the theorem proved in \cite{3} to any massless excitation in a given spherical box. As a first interesting result, we show that it is possible, contrary to the black hole case studied in detail in \cite{1,2,3}, to build macroscopic configurations with a dark energy equation of state. To this purpose, by requiring a stable configuration, a macroscopic dark fluid is obtained with an internal energy $U$ scaling as the volume $V$, but with a fundamental correction looking like $\sim 1/R$ motivated b…
We investigate the applicability of the moduli space approximation in theories with unbroken non-Abelian gauge symmetries. Such theories have massless magnetic monopoles that are manifested at the classical level as clouds of non-Abelian field surrounding one or more massive monopoles. Using an SO(5) example with one massive and one massless monopole, we compare the predictions of the moduli space approximation with the results of a numerical solution of the full field equations. We find that the two diverge when the cloud velocity becomes of order unity. After this time the cloud profile appr…
Solutions of massless spin-2 field equations are written in terms of massless spin-$\frac{3}{2}$ Rarita-Schwinger fields and twistor spinors. It is shown that the proposed massless spin-2 fields satisfy the tracelessness and divergencelessness conditions and are in the kernel of the Laplace-Beltrami operator. A spin lowering procedure for special cases and a symmetry operator for massless spin-2 fields are also obtained. Description of massless spin-2 fields in terms of lower spin fields are found.
We analyze the possibility of description of D-dimensional massless particles by the Lagrangians linear on world-line curvatures k_i, {\cal S}=\sum_{i=1}^Nc_i\int k_i d{\tilde s}. We show, that the nontrivial classical solutions of this model are given by space-like curves with zero 2N-th curvature for N\leq[(D-2)/2]. Massless spinning particles correspond to the curves with constant k_{N+a}/k_{N-a} ratio. It is shown that only the system with action {\cal S}=c\int k_N d{\tilde s} leads to irreducible representation of Poincaré group. This system has maximally possible number (N+1) of gauge de…
It was known for a long time that in d = 4 dimensions it is impossible to construct the Lagrangian for antisymmetric second rank spin-tensor that will be invariant under the gauge transformations with unconstrained spin-vector parameter. But recently a paper arXiv:0902.1471 appeared where gauge invariant Lagrangians for antisymmetric spin-tensors of arbitrary rank n in d > 2n were constructed using powerful BRST approach. To clarify apparent contradiction, in this note we carry a direct independent analysis of the most general first order Lagrangian for the massless antisymmetric spin-tensor o…
We propose a "master" higher-spin (HS) particle system. The particle model relevant to the unfolded formulation of HS theory, as well as the HS particle model with a bosonic counterpart of supersymmetry, follow from the master model as its two different gauges. Quantization of the master system gives rise to a new form of the massless HS equations in an extended space involving, besides extra spinorial coordinates, also a complex scalar one. As solutions to these equations we recover the massless HS multiplet with fields of all integer and half-integer helicities, and obtain new multiplets wit…
We analyse different approaches to the description of the quantum field theory of a free massless (pseudo)scalar field defined in 1+1-dimensional space-time which describes the bosonized version of the massless Thirring model. These are (i) axiomatic quantum field theory, (ii) current algebra and (iii) path-integral. We show that the quantum field theory of a free massless (pseudo)scalar field defined on the class of Schwartz's test functions S_0(R^2) connects all these approaches. This quantum field theory is well-defined within the framework of Wightman's axioms and Wightman's positive defin…
We present a novel twistor formulation of the ten-dimensional massless superparticle. This formulation is based on the introduction of pure spinor variables through a field redefinition of another model for the superparticle, and in the new description we find that the super-Pauli-Lubanski three-form naturally arises as a constraint. Quantization is studied in detail for both models and they are shown to correctly describe the $D = 10$ super-Yang-Mills states.
A s=1/2 antiferromagnetic spin chain is equivalent to the two-flavor massless Schwinger model in an uniform background charge density in the strong coupling. The gapless mode of the spin chain is represented by a massless boson of the Schwinger model. In a two-leg spin ladder system the massless boson aquires a finite mass due to inter-chain interactions. The gap energy is found to be about .25 k |J'| when the inter-chain Heisenberg coupling J' is small compared with the intra-chain Heisenberg coupling. k is a constant of O(1). It is also shown that a cyclically symmetric N-leg ladder system i…
