At two-thirds the weight of aluminum, magnesium alloys have the potential to significantly reduce the fuel consumption of transportation vehicles. These advancements depend on our ability to optimize the desirable versus undesirable effects of deformation twins: three dimensional (3D) microstructural domains that form under mechanical stresses. Previously only characterized using surface or thin-film measurements, here, we present the first 3D in-situ characterization of deformation twinning inside an embedded grain over mesoscopic fields of view using dark-field X-ray microscopy supported by crystal plasticity finite element analysis. The results reveal the important role of triple junctions on twin nucleation, that twin growth behavior is irregular and can occur in several directions simultaneously, and that twin-grain and twin-twin junctions are the sites of localized dislocation accumulation, a necessary precursor to crack initiation.
Twinning is an important deformation mode of hexagonal close-packed metals. The crystallographic theory is based on the 150-years old concept of simple shear. The habit plane of the twin is the shear plane, it is invariant. Here we present Electron BackScatter Diffraction observations and crystallographic analysis of a millimeter size twin in a magnesium single crystal whose straight habit plane, unambiguously determined both the parent crystal and in its twin, is not an invariant plane. This experimental evidence demonstrates that macroscopic deformation twinning can be obtained by a mechanis…
A crystallographic displacive model is proposed for the extension twins in magnesium. It is based on a hard-sphere assumption previously used for martensitic transformations. The atomic displacements are established, and the homogeneous lattice distortion is analytically expressed as a continuous angular-distortive matrix that takes the usual form of shear when the distortion is complete. The calculations prove that a volume change of 3 percents occurs for the intermediate states and that the twinning plane, even if untilted and restored when the distortion is complete, is not fully invariant …
Plastic deformation of metallic alloys usually takes place through slip, but occasionally involves twinning. In particular, twinning is important in hexagonal close packed materials where the easy slip systems are insufficient to accommodate arbitrary deformations. While deformation by slip mechanisms is reasonably well understood, less remains known about deformation by twinning. Indeed, the identification of relevant twinning modes remains an art. In this paper, we develop an universal framework combining fundamental kinematic definition of twins with large scale atomistic calculations to pr…
Precipitation on deformation defects is essential for enhancing mechanical properties of age-hardenable alloys. {10-12} twinning is common in deformed alloys with hexagonal-close-packed structure. In this work, we revealed how {10-12} twin boundary (TB) influences beta-Mg17Al12 precipitation in Mg-9Al-1Zn alloy. The precipitates on the TB are rod-like, while others are lath-shape. The precipitates hold the Burgers orientation relationship (OR) only with twin or matrix, contrary to traditional wisdom in others alloys that precipitates on TB symmetrically keep an OR with both twin and matrix. Mo…
A non-local model for the description of twinning in polycrystalline materials in the context of infinitesimal strains: application to a magnesium alloy
Contraction twinning in magnesium alloys leads to new grains that are misoriented from the parent grain by a rotation of 56 deg around the a-axis. The classical theory of deformation twinning does not precise the atomic displacements and does not explain why contractions twinning is less frequent than extension twinning. The paper proposes a new model in the continuity of our previous works on martensitic transformations and extension twinning. A continuous angular distortion matrix that transforms the initial hcp crystal into a final hcp crystal is determined such that the atoms move as hard …
Magnesium (Mg) and its alloys hold great potential as an energy-saving structural material for automative, aerospace applications. However, the use of Mg alloys has been limited due to poor ductility and formability. Poor mechanical properties of Mg alloys origin from the insufficient number of slip systems, and deformation twinning plays an important role to accommodate plastic deformation. Here, we report a comprehensive experimental and modeling study to understand crystal size effect on the transformation in deformation modes in twin oriented Mg single crystals. The experiments reveal two …
Capturing twin nucleation in full-field crystal plasticity is a long-standing problem in materials science. The challenge resides mainly in the biased regional lattice transformation associated with twin formation in defiance of its obedience to a threshold stress law which could be fulfilled in regions where twinning is deferred. Hence, determining a favorable site for nucleation of a twin variant remains a daunting task. We hypothesized that this site-specific nucleation is sensitive to the prior atomic structure of the lattice so twin embryos form in regions where the lattice transformation…
The effect of Al atoms in solid solution on the critical resolved shear stress for twin nucleation and growth was analyzed by means of the combination of diffusion couples with compression tests in micropillars oriented for twinning. The critical resolved shear stress for twin nucleation was higher than that for twin growth and both increased by the same amount with the Al content. Nevertheless, the increase was small ( approx. 10 MPa) for 4 at.%Al but large (up to 60-70 MPa) for 9 at.%Al. These results were in agreement with Labusch-models based on first principles calculations in the dilute …

Shape memory alloys often show a complex hierarchical morphology in the martensitic state. To understand the formation of this twin-within-twins microstructure, we examine epitaxial Ni-Mn-Ga films as a model system. In-situ scanning electron microscopy experiments show beautiful complex twinning patterns with a number of different mesoscopic twin boundaries and macroscopic twin boundaries between already twinned regions. We explain the appearance and geometry of these patterns by constructing an internally twinned martensitic nucleus, which can take the shape of a diamond or a parallelogram, w…
A theoretical-computational framework is proposed for predicting the failure behavior of two anisotropic brittle materials, namely, single crystal magnesium and boron carbide. Constitutive equations are derived, in both small and large deformations, by using thermodynamics in order to establish a fully coupled and transient twin and crack system. To study the common deformation mechanisms (e.g., twinning and fracture), which can be caused by extreme mechanical loading, a monolithically-solved Ginzburg--Landau-based phase-field theory coupled with the mechanical equilibrium equation is implemen…
Deformation twinning, which occurs in fcc metals only under particular conditions of intrinsic material properties, microstructure, and loading conditions, occupies an indispensable place in their deformation mechanism maps. Nonetheless, dedicated studies have seldom been carried out to explore the fundamental properties of twinning dislocations mediating this process. Here we employ a combination of atomistic computations and continuum modeling to investigate the nucleation of twinning dislocation loops in metals with fcc crystal structure. Besides the conventional layer-by-layer model of twi…
The martensitic transformation is one of the most important phenomena in metals science due to its essential contribution to the strength of steels and most engineering alloys. Yet the basic, atomistic mechanisms leading to martensite nucleation and twin morphology are not yet known. A detailed picture in this regard is required if the strengthening effects of martensite are to be properly understood. This work presents molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of the martensitic transformation using a model fcc/bcc semi-coherent interface with Nishiyama-Wasserman orientation relationship. Significa…
The motion of microstructural interfaces is important in modeling materials that undergo twinning and structural phase transformations. Continuum models fall into two classes: sharp-interface models, where interfaces are singular surfaces; and regularized-interface models, such as phase-field models, where interfaces are smeared out. The former are challenging for numerical solutions because the interfaces need to be explicitly tracked, but have the advantage that the kinetics of existing interfaces and the nucleation of new interfaces can be transparently and precisely prescribed. In contrast…
The growth process of of (-1012) twins is studied in Magnesium using atomistic simulations. Two twin seeds are considered and both cases, a specific interface, which places face-to-face prismatic and basal planes, plays an important role. This interface has a low energy corresponding to a cusp in the orientation-dependent interface energy of a twinned bicrystal. This interface appears in several published twin structures and for instance accommodates the large deviations of twin interfaces from (-1012) planes reported recently [Zhang et al., Scr. Mater. 67 (2012) 862].
The {11-22} and {11-26} twinning modes were recently put in evidence by Ostapovets et al. (Phil. Mag, 2017)and interpreted as {101-2}-{101-2} double-twins formed by a simultaneous action of two twinning shears. We propose another interpretation in which the twinning modes result from a one-step mechanism based on the same (58deg, a+2b) prototype stretch twin. . The two twins differ from the prototype twin by their obliquity correction. The results are compared with the classical theory of twinning and with Westlake-Rosenbaum model of {11-22} twinning. An unconventional twinning mode recently d…
The formation of basal/prismatic (BP) interfaces accompanying with the nucleation and growth of a reoriented crystal in Mg single-crystals under c-axis tension is investigated by molecular dynamics simulations. The BP interfaces nucleate by shuffling mechanism via local rearrangements of atoms. Both two-layer disconnections and one-layer disconnections contribute to the migration of BP interfaces. In a three-dimensional view, the BP interfaces relatively tend to migrate towards the [1-210] direction rather than the [-1010]/[0001] direction since the misfit disconnection or misfit dislocation c…

This work provides unambiguous evidence for the occurrence of icosahedral quasicrystal (iQC) enhanced nucleation during selective laser melting of gas atomized commercially-pure Ni powders. This solidification mechanism, which has only been recently reported in a few alloys and has to date never been observed in pure metals, consists on the solidification of grains of the primary phase on the facets of iQCs formed due to the presence of icosahedral short range order in the liquid. The occurrence of iQC enhanced nucleation has been inferred from the observation in the SLM processed pure Ni samp…

High-throughput atomistic simulations reveal the unique effect of solute atoms on twin variant selection in Mg-Al alloys. Twin embryos first undergo a stochastic incubation stage when embryos choose which twin variant to adopt, and then a deterministic growth stage when embryos expand without changing the selected twin variant. An increase in Al composition promotes the stochastic incubation behavior on the atomic level due to nucleation and pinning of interfacial disconnections. At compositions above a critical value, disconnection pinning results in multiple twin variant selection.
Deformation twinning is a form of permanent deformation that is commonly observed in low symmetry crystals such as hexagonal close-packed (hcp) metals. With recent increased interest in using hcp metals, such as magnesium, in structural, automotive, and armor applications due to their high strength to weight ratio, there is a need for a comprehensive understanding of deformation twinning and its interaction with dislocation slip. A great deal has been learned at the microscopic level where individual dislocations interact with twin boundaries through atomistic simulations, and at the macroscop…
When a crystalline solid such as iron is cooled across a structural transition, its final microstructure depends sensitively on the cooling rate. For instance, an adiabatic cooling across the transition results in an equilibrium `ferrite', while a rapid cooling gives rise to a metastable twinned `martensite'. There exists no theoretical framework to understand the dynamics and conditions under which both these microstructures obtain. Existing theories of martensite dynamics describe this transformation in terms of elastic strain, without any explanation for the occurence of the ferrite. Here w…
We investigate the deformation and failure mechanisms of phosphorene sheet and nanoribbons under uniaxial tensile strain along the zigzag direction using the density functional tight-binding method. Surprisingly, twin-like deformation occurs homogenously across the phosphorene sheet, which significantly increases its failure strain. Vacancies within the sheet lead to the heterogeneous nucleation of twins at a lower critical strain which, subsequently, propagate across the entire sheet. Twin-like deformation always occurs heterogeneously in phosphorene nanoribbons (with or without vacancies). P…
High-density and nanosized deformation twins in face-centered cubic (fcc)materials can effectively improve the combination of strength and ductility. However, the microscopic dislocation mechanisms enabling a high twinnability remain elusive. Twinning usually occurs via continuous nucleation and gliding of twinning partial dislocations on consecutive close-packed atomic planes. Here we unveil a completely different twinning mechanism being active in metastable fcc materials. The transformation-mediated twinning (TMT) is featured by a preceding displacive transformation from the fcc phase to th…
Strain heterogeneity at the microstructural level plays a vital role in the deformation and fracture behaviour of dual or multi-phase materials. In the present work, the strain heterogeneity, localization and partitioning arising at the sub-micron scale during elevated temperature (170 °C) tensile deformation of an Mg-5Al-3Ca alloy was investigated using quasi in-situ μ-DIC experiments. The results reveal that the strain is mainly carried by the α-Mg phase, while the intermetallic Laves phase plays a critical role in that strain concentrations build up at the α-Mg matrix and Laves phase interf…
Tensile twinning is a main deformation mode in hexagonal close packed structure metals, so it is important to comprehensively understand twinning mechanisms which are not fully disclosed using 2D or small volume 3D characterization techniques. A large area 3D electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) measurement and crystal plasticity modeling were carried out to investigate the tensile twinning behaviors in a Mg alloy. The results showed that tensile twinning activity was underestimated using conventional 2D EBSD scans. When compressed to yield point, the examined twin frequency with 2D was low…
Molecular dynamics simulations were performed to understand the role of twin boundaries on deformation behaviour of body-centred cubic (BCC) iron (Fe) nanopillars. The twin boundaries varying from one to five providing twin boundary spacing in the range 8.5 - 2.8 nm were introduced perpendicular to the loading direction. The simulation results indicated that the twin boundaries in BCC Fe play a contrasting role during deformation under tensile and compressive loadings. During tensile deformation, a large reduction in yield stress was observed in twinned nanopillars compared to perfect nanopill…
Based on original investigations into the stages of nucleation and growth of martensite, a consideration has been given to dynamic models of formation of martensite plates with a fine structure of transformation twins, which are compatible with the supersonic growth rate of martensite crystals. Along with relatively long quasi-longitudinal waves, which determine the orientation of the habit plane, the control wave process includes relatively short longitudinal waves, which act in synchronism and control the growth of the main component of a regular twin structure. Preference is given to a mode…
Three-dimensional (3D) X-ray diffraction methods were used to analyze the evolution of the load-induced rearrangements of monoclinic twin microstructures within bulk nickel-titanium specimens in 3D and across six orders of magnitude in length scales: changes in lattice plane spacings and orientations at the nanoscale, growth and nucleation of martensite twin variants at the microscale, and localization of plastic strain into deformation bands at the macroscale. Portions of the localized deformation bands were reconstructed in situ and in 3D. Analyses of the data elucidate the sequence of twin …
The effect of Ca and Zn in solid solution on the critical resolved shear stress (CRSS) of <a> basal slip, tensile twinning and <c+a> pyramidal slip in Mg alloys has been measured through compression tests on single crystal micropillars with different orientations. The solute atoms increased the CRSS for basal slip to ~ 13.5 MPa, while the CRSS for pyramidal slip was lower than 85 MPa, reducing significantly the plastic anisotropy in comparison with pure Mg. Moreover, the CRSSs for twin nucleation and growth were very similar (~ 37 MPa) and the large value of the CRSS for twin growth hindered t…
The deformation and fatigue crack nucleation mechanisms were studied by means of slip trace analysis and secondary electron microscopy in a textured AZ31B-O Mg alloy subjected to fully-reversed cyclic deformation at two different cyclic strain semi-amplitudes. Samples were deformed in two orientations leading to symmetric and non-symmetric cyclic stress-strain curves due to the activation of different deformation mechanisms. They were ascertained in longitudinal sections of the specimens, which included a large number of grains (from 1500 to 4500 for each specimen), to obtain statistically sig…
With numerical simulations of the mW model of water, we investigate the energetic stability of crystalline clusters for both Ice I (cubic and hexagonal ice) and for the metastable Ice 0 phase as a function of the cluster size. Under a large variety of forming conditions, we find that the most stable cluster changes as a function of size: at small sizes the Ice 0 phase produces the most stable clusters, while at large sizes there is a crossover to Ice I clusters. We further investigate the growth of crystalline clusters with the seeding technique and study the growth patterns of different cryst…
