The effect of Al atoms in solid solution on the critical resolved shear stress for twin nucleation and growth was analyzed by means of the combination of diffusion couples with compression tests in micropillars oriented for twinning. The critical resolved shear stress for twin nucleation was higher than that for twin growth and both increased by the same amount with the Al content. Nevertheless, the increase was small ( approx. 10 MPa) for 4 at.%Al but large (up to 60-70 MPa) for 9 at.%Al. These results were in agreement with Labusch-models based on first principles calculations in the dilute regime (< 5 at.%Al) [51]. Comparison with recent data in the literature showed that Al atoms are more effective in increasing the critical resolved shear stresses for twin nucleation and growth than for basal slip [21]. Finally, compression tests in micropillars oriented along [0001] showed the critical shear stress for pyramidal slip increased rapidly with the Al content from 98 MPa in pure Mg to 250 MPa in Mg-9 at.%Al. Thus, the addition of Al increased the plastic anisotropy of Mg alloys.
By means of low-temperature expansions (LTEs), the nucleation free energy and the precipitate interface free energy are expressed as functions of the solubility limit for alloys which lead to the precipitation of a stoichiometric L12 compound such as Al-Sc or Al-Zr alloys. Classical nucleation theory is then used to obtain a simple expression of the nucleation rate whose validity is demonstrated by a comparison with atomic simulations. LTEs also explain why simple mean-field approximation like the Bragg-Williams approximation fails to predict correct nucleation rates in such an ordering alloy.
Effect of ballistic re-solution on the nucleation kinetics of precipitates in diluted binary alloys under irradiation. Part 2: Cr-rich alpha' precipitates in Fe-Cr alloys

Capturing twin nucleation in full-field crystal plasticity is a long-standing problem in materials science. The challenge resides mainly in the biased regional lattice transformation associated with twin formation in defiance of its obedience to a threshold stress law which could be fulfilled in regions where twinning is deferred. Hence, determining a favorable site for nucleation of a twin variant remains a daunting task. We hypothesized that this site-specific nucleation is sensitive to the prior atomic structure of the lattice so twin embryos form in regions where the lattice transformation…

Crystallization represents a fundamental process engendering solidification of a material and determines its microstructure. Driven by complex phenomena at the atomic scale, its understanding for alloys still remains elusive. The present work proposes a large scale molecular dynamics simulation study of the homogeneous crystal nucleation pathways of prototypical undercooled Al-Ni binary alloys. An unsupervised topological learning analysis shows that the nucleation sets in first from a chemical ordering, followed by a bond-orientational ordering of the underlying crystal phase. Our results ind…
Precipitation on deformation defects is essential for enhancing mechanical properties of age-hardenable alloys. {10-12} twinning is common in deformed alloys with hexagonal-close-packed structure. In this work, we revealed how {10-12} twin boundary (TB) influences beta-Mg17Al12 precipitation in Mg-9Al-1Zn alloy. The precipitates on the TB are rod-like, while others are lath-shape. The precipitates hold the Burgers orientation relationship (OR) only with twin or matrix, contrary to traditional wisdom in others alloys that precipitates on TB symmetrically keep an OR with both twin and matrix. Mo…
The simulations of the solidification of ternary Al-Cu-Ni alloys by means of a general multi-phase-field model for an arbitrary number of phases reveal that the real microstructure can be generated by coupling the real thermodynamic parameters of the phases and the evolution equations. The stability requirements on individual interfaces for model functions guarantee an absence of "ghost" phases in a $n$-dimensional phase-field space. The special constructed thermal noise terms disturb the stability and can produce the heterogeneous nucleation of product phases in accordance to the energetic an…
We investigated the homogenous nucleation of the stoichiometric B2 and B33 phases in the Ni50Zr50 alloy using the persistent embryo method and the classical nucleation theory. The two phases become very close competitors at large supercoolings, which is consistent with the experimental observations. In the case of the B2 phase, the linear temperature dependence of the solid-liquid interface (SLI) free energy extrapolated to the melting temperature leads to the same value as the one obtained from the capillarity fluctuation method (CFM). In the case of the B33 phases, the SLI free energy is als…
High-throughput atomistic simulations reveal the unique effect of solute atoms on twin variant selection in Mg-Al alloys. Twin embryos first undergo a stochastic incubation stage when embryos choose which twin variant to adopt, and then a deterministic growth stage when embryos expand without changing the selected twin variant. An increase in Al composition promotes the stochastic incubation behavior on the atomic level due to nucleation and pinning of interfacial disconnections. At compositions above a critical value, disconnection pinning results in multiple twin variant selection.
Dislocation interactions at the crack nucleation site were investigated in near-alpha titanium alloy Ti-6242Si subjected to low cycle fatigue. Cyclic plastic strain in the alloy resulted in dislocation pile-ups in the primary alpha grains, nucleated at the boundaries between the primary alpha and the two-phase regions. These two phase regions provided a barrier to slip transfer between primary alpha grains. We suggest that crack nucleation occurred near the basal plane of primary alpha grains by the subsurface double-ended pile-up mechanism first conceived by Tanaka and Mura. Superjogs on the …
The internal oxidation of Sn was investigated to understand the oxidation kinetics of monophase CuSn alloys. SnO2 particles were characterized by analytical transmission electron microscopy. The orientation relationship between SnO2 and Cu was determined with a special emphasis on the atomic scale structure of Cu/SnO2 interfaces (misfit dislocations and chemical structure). Habit planes with a pure oxygen plane terminating the SnO2 phase are greatly favored and large misfits promote the growth of plate shaped precipitates.
The chemical pathways leading to gamma-prime(L1_2)-nucleation from nondilute Ni-5.2 Al-14.2 Cr at.%, gamma(f.c.c.), at 873 K are followed with radial distribution functions and isoconcentration surface analyses of direct-space atom-probe tomographic images. Although Cr atoms initially are randomly distributed, a distribution of congruent Ni3Al short-range order domains (SRO), <R> =0.6 nm, results from Al diffusion during quenching. Domain site occupancy develops as their number density increases leading to Al-rich phase separation by gamma-prime-nucleation, <R>=0.75 nm, after SRO occurs.
We study the influence of the liquid-vapor surface on the crystallization kinetics of supercooled metal alloys. While a good glass former, $\rm{Cu}_{50}\rm{Zr}_{50}$, shows no evidence of surface enhancement of crystallization, $\rm{Ni}_{50}\rm{Al}_{50}$ exhibits an increased rate of crystallization due to heterogeneous nucleation at the free liquid surface. The difference in the compositional fluctuations at the interface is proposed as the explanation of the distinction between the two alloys. Specifically, we observe compositional ordering at the surface of $\rm{Ni}_{50}\rm{Al}_{50}$ while …
We study the effect of Stacking Fault Energy (SFE) on the deformation behaviour of copper and copper-aluminium alloys using Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulation. We find that both yield stress and the magnitude of stress drop at yield decrease with increasing Al content. This "anomalous" softening behaviour is explained on the basis of nucleation controlled yielding behaviour. Further, the decrease in stress drop is rationalised in terms of the stored energy available at yielding - we show that this decreases with increasing Al. As a result, the maximum dislocation density is found to decrease w…
Shape memory alloys often show a complex hierarchical morphology in the martensitic state. To understand the formation of this twin-within-twins microstructure, we examine epitaxial Ni-Mn-Ga films as a model system. In-situ scanning electron microscopy experiments show beautiful complex twinning patterns with a number of different mesoscopic twin boundaries and macroscopic twin boundaries between already twinned regions. We explain the appearance and geometry of these patterns by constructing an internally twinned martensitic nucleus, which can take the shape of a diamond or a parallelogram, w…
Precipitation of the γ' (AlAg2) phase was investigated in Al-Ag(-Cu) alloys using high resolution transmission electron microscopy and scanning transmission electron microscopy. Precipitation commenced with segregation of silver to stacking faults, followed by thickening in steps corresponding to single unit cell ledges. In conjunction with gradual segregation of silver and aluminium into ordered layers this yielded γ' phase platelets with a thickness of either 2 or 3x the AlAg2 c-lattice parameter. Plates with a thickness of 2 c(AlAg2) would not achieve self-accommodation of the shape strain …
The deformation mechanisms of an extruded Mg-5Y-0.08Ca (wt. %) alloy were analyzed by means of micropillar compression tests on single crystals along different orientations -- selected to activate specific deformation modes -- as well as slip trace analysis, transmission electron microscopy and transmission Kikuchi diffraction. The polycrystalline alloy presented a remarkable ductility in tension (~32%) and negligible differences in the yield strength between tension and compression. It was found that the presence of Y and Ca in solid solution led to a huge increase in the CRSS for <a> basal s…
Deformation twinning, which occurs in fcc metals only under particular conditions of intrinsic material properties, microstructure, and loading conditions, occupies an indispensable place in their deformation mechanism maps. Nonetheless, dedicated studies have seldom been carried out to explore the fundamental properties of twinning dislocations mediating this process. Here we employ a combination of atomistic computations and continuum modeling to investigate the nucleation of twinning dislocation loops in metals with fcc crystal structure. Besides the conventional layer-by-layer model of twi…
A high-throughput methodology is proposed, based on the combination of diffusion couples and advanced nanomechanical testing methods, to directly measure alloying effects on the critical resolved shear stress (CRSS) of individual deformation modes in Mg alloys. The methodology is tested in Mg-Zn alloys by assessing the alloying effects, up to Zn contents of 2 at.%, on basal slip, extension twining and pyramidal slip in two metallurgical condition: as-quenched, for which the Zn solute atoms remain homogenously dispersed in solid solution; and peak-aged, for which the Zn atoms form rod-shape $Mg…
Zr and Sc precipitate in aluminum alloys to form the Al\_3Zr\_xSc\_{1-x} compound which, for low supersaturations of the solid solution, exhibits the L1\_2 structure. The aim of the present study is to model at an atomic scale the kinetics of precipitation and to build mesoscopic models so as to extend the range of supersaturations and annealing times that can be simulated up to values of practical interest. In this purpose, we use some ab initio calculations and experimental data to fit an Ising type model describing thermodynamics of the Al-Zr-Sc system. Kinetics of precipitation are studied…
We study the branching of twins appearing in shape memory alloys at the interface between austenite and martensite. In the framework of three-dimensional non-linear elasticity theory, we propose an explicit, low-energy construction of the branched microstructure, generally applicable to any shape memory material without restrictions on the symmetry class of martensite or on the geometric parameters of the interface. We show that the suggested construction follows the expected energy scaling law, i.e., that (for the surface energy of the twins being sufficiently small) the branching leads to en…
In our present publication we will continue studying the effects of the magnetostatic energy on the magnetization behavior of FMSMAs recently started in some our publications. Our method is based on the direct minimization of our new micromagnetic free energy model of FMSMAs taking into account both the magnetic anisotropy energy and the magnetostatic energy contributions associated with the laminated two-variant twin microstructure. Here, our special interest is to investigate a distribution of local magnetizations within both twin variants, their orientation and their dependence on the exter…
A non-local model for the description of twinning in polycrystalline materials in the context of infinitesimal strains: application to a magnesium alloy
Identifying the operative mode of phase separation (spinodal decomposition (SD) or nucleation-growth (NG)) remains a largely unexplored area of research in spite of its importance. The present work examines this critically in Fe-Cr system using atom probe tomography (APT) and small angle neutron scattering (SANS), and establishes the framework to distinguish the two different modes of alpha-prime phase separation in thermally aged Fe-35 at.% Cr and Fe-20 at.% Cr alloys. Independent APT analysis determines the mode of phase separation on the basis of: (i) presence / absence of periodic chemical…
Recently, several research groups have reported on the observation of super-large more than 5% magneto-strain effect in some non-stoichiometric Ni-Mn-Ga alloys close to 5.78% value expected from the tetragonality aspect ratio of the martensite crystal lattice. New Ni-Mn-Ga alloys showing giant magneto-strain effect display simultaneously few interesting physical effects and new behavior for some magnetic and mechanical properties which is very different from that earlier observed in Ni-Mn-Ga showing lower magneto-strain effect. This report represents some new experimental results and the quant…
Selective laser melting (SLM) is rapidly evolving to become a mainstream technology. However, the fundamental mechanisms of solidification and microstructure development inherent to the non-equilibrium conditions of this additive manufacturing method, which differ largely from those typical of conventional processing techniques, remain widely unknown. In this work, an in-depth characterization of the microstructure of Al7075 SLM processed samples, built from powder mixtures containing ZrH2 microparticles, demonstrates the occurrence of icosahedral quasicrystal-enhanced nucleation during laser …
The martensitic transformation is one of the most important phenomena in metals science due to its essential contribution to the strength of steels and most engineering alloys. Yet the basic, atomistic mechanisms leading to martensite nucleation and twin morphology are not yet known. A detailed picture in this regard is required if the strengthening effects of martensite are to be properly understood. This work presents molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of the martensitic transformation using a model fcc/bcc semi-coherent interface with Nishiyama-Wasserman orientation relationship. Significa…
Aiming at increasing the yield strength of transformation and twinning induced plasticity (TRIP and TWIP) titanium alloys, a dual-phase $α$/$β$ alloy is designed and studied. The composition Ti 7Cr 1.5Sn (wt.%) is proposed, based on an approach coupling Calphad calculations and classical Bo-Md design tool used in Ti-alloys. Its microstructure is made of 20% of $α$ precipitates in a $β$ matrix, the matrix having optimal Bo and Md parameters for deformation twinning and martensitic transformation. The alloy indeed displays a yield strength of 760 MPa, about 200 MPa above that of a Ti 8.5Cr 1.5Sn…
The effect of Ca and Zn in solid solution on the critical resolved shear stress (CRSS) of <a> basal slip, tensile twinning and <c+a> pyramidal slip in Mg alloys has been measured through compression tests on single crystal micropillars with different orientations. The solute atoms increased the CRSS for basal slip to ~ 13.5 MPa, while the CRSS for pyramidal slip was lower than 85 MPa, reducing significantly the plastic anisotropy in comparison with pure Mg. Moreover, the CRSSs for twin nucleation and growth were very similar (~ 37 MPa) and the large value of the CRSS for twin growth hindered t…
Kinetics of homogeneous nucleation and growth of copper precipitates under electron irradiation of Fe_{1-x}Cu_x alloys at concentrations x from 0.06 at.% to 0.4 at.% and temperatures T from 290 to 450C is studied using the kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) simulations and the statistical theory of nucleation (STN). The conventional assumption about the similarity of mechanisms of precipitation under electron irradiation and during thermal aging is adopted. The earlier-developed ab initio model of interactions in Fe-Cu alloys is used for both the KMC simulations and the STN calculations. Values of the …
Magnesium (Mg) and its alloys hold great potential as an energy-saving structural material for automative, aerospace applications. However, the use of Mg alloys has been limited due to poor ductility and formability. Poor mechanical properties of Mg alloys origin from the insufficient number of slip systems, and deformation twinning plays an important role to accommodate plastic deformation. Here, we report a comprehensive experimental and modeling study to understand crystal size effect on the transformation in deformation modes in twin oriented Mg single crystals. The experiments reveal two …
Strain heterogeneity at the microstructural level plays a vital role in the deformation and fracture behaviour of dual or multi-phase materials. In the present work, the strain heterogeneity, localization and partitioning arising at the sub-micron scale during elevated temperature (170 °C) tensile deformation of an Mg-5Al-3Ca alloy was investigated using quasi in-situ μ-DIC experiments. The results reveal that the strain is mainly carried by the α-Mg phase, while the intermetallic Laves phase plays a critical role in that strain concentrations build up at the α-Mg matrix and Laves phase interf…
Three-dimensional (3D) X-ray diffraction methods were used to analyze the evolution of the load-induced rearrangements of monoclinic twin microstructures within bulk nickel-titanium specimens in 3D and across six orders of magnitude in length scales: changes in lattice plane spacings and orientations at the nanoscale, growth and nucleation of martensite twin variants at the microscale, and localization of plastic strain into deformation bands at the macroscale. Portions of the localized deformation bands were reconstructed in situ and in 3D. Analyses of the data elucidate the sequence of twin …
Precipitation during high temperature aging of Al-Cu alloys is analyzed by means of the integration of classical nucleation theory and phase-field simulations into a multiscale modelling approach based on well-established thermodynamics principles. In particular, thermal stability of $θ''$, $θ'$ and $θ$ precipitates was assessed from first principles calculations of the Helmholtz free energy while homogeneous and heterogeneous nucleation of $θ''$ and $θ'$ was analysed using classical nucleation theory. Precipitate growth was finally computed by means of mesoscopic phase-field model. The model …
The formation of basal/prismatic (BP) interfaces accompanying with the nucleation and growth of a reoriented crystal in Mg single-crystals under c-axis tension is investigated by molecular dynamics simulations. The BP interfaces nucleate by shuffling mechanism via local rearrangements of atoms. Both two-layer disconnections and one-layer disconnections contribute to the migration of BP interfaces. In a three-dimensional view, the BP interfaces relatively tend to migrate towards the [1-210] direction rather than the [-1010]/[0001] direction since the misfit disconnection or misfit dislocation c…
We demonstrate room-temperature stabilization of dipolar magnetic skyrmions with diameters in the range of $100$ nm in a single ultrathin layer of the Heusler alloy Co$_2$FeAl (CFA) under moderate magnetic fields. Current-induced skyrmion dynamics in microwires is studied with a scanning Nitrogen-Vacancy magnetometer operating in the photoluminescence quenching mode. We first demonstrate skyrmion nucleation by spin-orbit torque and show that its efficiency can be significantly improved using tilted magnetic fields, an effect which is not specific to Heusler alloys and could be advantageous for…
A multiscale approach based on the phase-field model is developed to simulate homogeneous and heterogeneous formation of θ' precipitates during high temperature ageing in Al-Cu alloys. The model parameters that determine the different energy contributions (chemical free energy, interfacial energy, lattice parameters, elastic constants) were obtained from either computational thermodynamics databases or from first-principles density functional theory and molecular statics simulations. From the information, the evolution and equilibrium morphology of the θ' precipitates is simulated in 3D using …
Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) has attracted significant attention due to its superior properties as well as its potential as an ideal dielectric layer for graphene-based devices. The h-BN films obtained via chemical vapor deposition in earlier reports are always polycrystalline with small grains due to high nucleation density on substrates. Here we report the successful synthesis of large single-crystal h-BN grains on rational designed Cu-Ni alloy foils. It is found that the nucleation density can be greatly reduced to 60 per mm2 by optimizing Ni ratio in substrates. The strategy enables the …
In general, with the addition of solutes, the yield strength of alloys is expected to increase and this phenomenon is known as solid solution strengthening. However, reports on the ``anomalous'' softening with alloying additions are not uncommon; for example, it is known that the heterogeneous nucleation of dislocations at the sites of solute atoms can lead to softening. In this study, using Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations, we show anomalous softening in Cu-Al alloys deformed at 300 K; specifically, not only the yield stress but also the magnitude of stress drop at yield decrease with incr…
A new $β$-metastable Ti-alloy is designed with the aim to obtain a TWIP alloy but positioned at the limit between the TRIP/TWIP and the TWIP dominated regime. The designed alloy exhibits a large ductility combined with an elevated and stable work-hardening rate. Deformation occurring by formation and multiplication of {332}<113> twins is evidenced and followed by in-situ electron microscopy, and no primary stress induced martensite is observed. Since microstructural investigations of the deformation mechanisms show a highly heterogeneous deformation, the reason of the large ductility is then i…
Zr and Sc precipitate in aluminum alloys to form the compounds Al3Zr and Al3Sc which for low supersaturations of the solid solution have the L12 structure. The aim of the present study is to model at an atomic scale this kinetics of precipitation and to build a mesoscopic model based on classical nucleation theory so as to extend the field of supersaturations and annealing times that can be simulated. We use some ab-initio calculations and experimental data to fit an Ising model describing thermodynamics of the Al-Zr and Al-Sc systems. Kinetic behavior is described by means of an atom-vacancy …

The effect of dopants on the metallic glass forming ability is usually considered based on analysis of changes in the liquid structure or thermodynamics. What is missing in such considerations is an analysis of how a dopant changes the properties of the crystal phases which can form instead of the glass. In order to illuminate this aspect we performed molecular dynamics simulations to study the effects of Mg and Sm dopants on the crystal nucleation in Al. The simulation data were found to be consistent with the experimental observations that addition of Mg to Al does not lead to vitrification …
Ductile metals undergo a considerable amount of plastic deformation before failure. Void nucleation, growth and coalescence is the mechanism of failure in such metals. α/β titanium alloys are ductile in nature and are widely used for their unique set of properties like specific strength, fracture toughness, corrosion resistance and resistance to fatigue failures. Voids in these alloys were reported to nucleate on the phase boundaries between α and β phase. Based on the findings of crystal plasticity finite element method (CPFEM) based investigation of the void growth at the interface of α and …
