Based on original investigations into the stages of nucleation and growth of martensite, a consideration has been given to dynamic models of formation of martensite plates with a fine structure of transformation twins, which are compatible with the supersonic growth rate of martensite crystals. Along with relatively long quasi-longitudinal waves, which determine the orientation of the habit plane, the control wave process includes relatively short longitudinal waves, which act in synchronism and control the growth of the main component of a regular twin structure. Preference is given to a model containing, at the initial moment of time, the only active dynamic cell capable of periodic reproduction in the interphase region at the stage of the martensite crystal growth. Conditions providing the ratio between the components of the twin structure, which would be optimal for minimization of the transformation time, have been discussed. A transition to final deformations, which are two to three orders of magnitude larger than the threshold deformations, have been made. The calculated macroscopic morphological attributes, which were deduced from dynamic considerations, have been compared with the experimental data and crystallogeometrical calculation.
In order to obtain modulated-martensite in our epitaxial Ni-Mn-Ga films, we have tuned the composition by using a co-sputtering process. Here we present how the composition affects the variant distribution of the 14-modulated martensite at room temperature. The nature of such modulated-martensites is still strongly debated for magnetic shape memory alloys. It has been very recently demonstrated that the modulated-martensites in Ni-Mn-Ga are adaptive phases. The results presented here corroborate this theory for the first time, for three different compositions. Moreover, we demonstrate with the…
Shape memory alloys often show a complex hierarchical morphology in the martensitic state. To understand the formation of this twin-within-twins microstructure, we examine epitaxial Ni-Mn-Ga films as a model system. In-situ scanning electron microscopy experiments show beautiful complex twinning patterns with a number of different mesoscopic twin boundaries and macroscopic twin boundaries between already twinned regions. We explain the appearance and geometry of these patterns by constructing an internally twinned martensitic nucleus, which can take the shape of a diamond or a parallelogram, w…
When a crystalline solid such as iron is cooled across a structural transition, its final microstructure depends sensitively on the cooling rate. For instance, an adiabatic cooling across the transition results in an equilibrium `ferrite', while a rapid cooling gives rise to a metastable twinned `martensite'. There exists no theoretical framework to understand the dynamics and conditions under which both these microstructures obtain. Existing theories of martensite dynamics describe this transformation in terms of elastic strain, without any explanation for the occurence of the ferrite. Here w…
In order to obtain Ni-Mn-Ga epitaxial films crystallized in martensite structures showing Magnetic-Induced Rearrangement (MIR) of martensite variants, a fine control of the composition is required. Here we present how the co-sputtering process might be helpful in the development of Ni-Mn-Ga epitaxial films. A batch of epitaxial Ni-Mn-Ga films deposited by co-sputtering of a Ni-Mn-Ga ternary target and a pure manganese target has been studied. The co-sputtering process allows a precise control of the film compositions and enables keeping the epitaxial growth of Ni-Mn-Ga austenite during deposit…
Tensile stress-strain behavior of Ni57.5Mn22.5Ga20.0 single crystal exhibiting a high-temperature 2M-martensitic phase stable up to 360\degree C has been studied in the course of thermal and mechanical cycling. The ultra-large reversible strains, about 9%, caused by the shape memory and superelasticity effects, have been observed up to 400 \degree C being the instrumental temperature limit. Abnormally large two-way shape memory effect with 9% of strain magnitude has been found. The cycling procedure and the variation of thermal/mechanical routs of the training of samples revealed the destabili…
We used a micromechanical torsional oscillator to measure the magnetic response of a twinned YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ single crystal disk near the Bose glass transition. We observe an anomaly in the temperature dependence of the magnetization consistent with the appearance of a magnetic shielding perpendicular to the correlated pinning of the twin boundaries. This effect is related to the thermodynamic transition from the vortex liquid phase to a Bose glass state.
In the current work considering the wave model of the crystal growth control, an influence of heterogeneity of the medium on the forming martensite crystal s profile was examined. The considering of the heterogeneity is provided with the help of putting into operations the space-depending effective attenuation of the waves. The description of the heterogeneity was fulfilled in three different ways: exponential, quadratic and inverse-quadratic. It was shown, that dependently of the heterogeneity of the medium various martensite crystal s profile can be implemented, considering the shape of its …

In this work, we report ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy of EuFe2As2 single crystals. We observe ferromagnetic resonance responses, which are attributed to antiferromagnetic resonances of Eu sub-lattice with orthorhombic crystal structure and with different orientations of twin domains relative to the external field. We confirm validity of the recently-proposed spin Hamiltonian with anisotropic Eu-Eu exchange interaction and biquadratic Eu-Fe exchange interaction.

This book is the first monograph in the scientific literature, dedicated to the FCC-BCC transformation in iron-based alloys, in which the dynamical approach is used for the explanation of the martensite growth stage. The rapid growth of a cooling martensite crystal is considered as a self-organized process controlled by the quasi-longitudinal lattice displacement waves (DW). The regime of the DW initial excitation is rigid. DW have the frequencies ~$10^{10} sec^{-1}$ from the hypersound band and the amplitudes providing the level of deformation ~$10^{-3}$. The conditions that are necessary for…

A thermodynamically consistent multiphase phase-field approach for stress and temperature-induced martensitic phase transformation at the nanoscale and under large strains is developed. A total of N independent order parameters are considered for materials with N variants, where one of the order parameters describes A <-> M transformations and the remaining N-1 independent order parameters describe the transformations between the variants. A non-contradictory gradient energy is used within the free energy of the system to account for the energies of the interfaces. In addition, a non-contradic…
Ni-Mn-Ga films in the austenite and the martensite structures at room temperature have been obtained using the DC magnetron sputtering technique. Two elaboration processes were studied. A first batch of samples was deposited using a resist sacrificial layer in order to release the film from the substrate before vacuum annealing. This process leads to polycrystalline films with a strong (022) fiber texture. The martensitic phase transformation of such polycrystalline freestanding films has been studied by optical and scanning electron microscopy. A second batch of samples was grown epitaxially …
We describe the microstructure, shape and dynamics of growth of a droplet of martensite nucleating in a parent austenite during a solid-solid transformation, using a Landau theory written in terms of conventional affine, elastic deformations and {\em non-affine} degrees of freedom. Non-affineness, $ϕ$, serves as a source of strain incompatibility and screens long-ranged elastic interactions. It is produced wherever the local stress exceeds a threshold and anneals diffusively thereafter. A description in terms of $ϕ$ is inevitable when the separation between defect pairs, possibly generated dur…
Smectic liquid crystals are remarkable, beautiful examples of materials microstructure, with ordered patterns of geometrically perfect ellipses and hyperbolas. The solution of the complex problem of filling three-dimensional space with domains of focal conics under constraining boundary conditions yields a set of strict rules, which are similar to the compatibility conditions in a martensitic crystal. Here we present the rules giving compatible conditions for the concentric circle domains found at two-dimensional smectic interfaces with planar boundary conditions. Using configurations generate…
Multiply twinned particles, MTPs, are fascinating crystallographic entities with a number of controllable properties originating from their symmetry and cyclic structure. In the focus of our studies are diamond MTPs hosting optically active defects, objects demonstrating a high application potential for emerging optoelectronic and quantum devices. In this work, we discuss the growth mechanisms along with the microstructural and optical properties of the MTPs aggregating high-density of silicon-vacancy complexes on the specific crystal irregularities. It is demonstrated that the silicon impurit…
The discovery of quasicrystals 30 years ago challenged our understanding of order at the atomic scale. While quasicrystals possess long-range orientational order they lack translation periodicity. Structurally complex, yet crystalline intermetallics and (bulk) metallic glasses represent competing states of condensed matter among metallic phases, including peculiarities like the q-glass. Considerable progress has been made in their structure elucidation and in identifying factors governing their formation; comparatively less is known about their interrelation. Moreover, studies bridging the spa…
The microstructure of a CoNiAl FSMA was determined by conventional transmission electron microscopy, electron diffraction studies together with advanced microscopy techniques and in-situ Lorentz microscopy. 10 to 60 nm sized rod-like precipitates of hcp $ε$-Co were confirmed to be present by HRTEM. The orientation relationship between the precipitates and B2 matrix is described by the Burgers orientation relationship. The crystal structure of the martensite obtained after cooling is tetragonal L10 with a (1-11) twinning plane. The magnetic domain structure was determined during an in-situ cool…
Twin boundaries (TBs) are assumed to be obstacles to dislocation motion and increase the strength of metals. Here, we report the abnormal phenomenon that TBs reduce the strength of body-centered cubic (BCC) tungsten (W). [1-11]-oriented W nanowires with (121) twin planes and free of dislocations were fabricated by chemical vapor deposition. In situ tensile tests within the transmission electron microscope were performed on single-crystal and twinned W nanowires. The fracture strength of the twinned W nanowire was 13.7 GPa, 16% lower than that of the single-crystal W nanowire (16.3 GPa). The we…
Though the martensitic transformation in zirconia has been the object of a very large number of studies for the last decades, qualitative and quantitative observations of the formation and growth of relief induced by low temperature treatments has hardly ever been reported. In the first part of the study, we have demonstrated the excellent agreement between the atomic force microscopy quantitative observations and the outputs of the calculations derived from the phenomenological theory of martensitic transformation. The intermediate stages of transformation were nonetheless not considered. In …
The summary of the models offered by the author revealing features of the physical mechanisms controlling processes of martensite crystal formation is resulted. The rapid growth of a cooling martensite crystal is considered as a self-organized process controlled by the quasi-longitudinal lattice displacement waves (DW). It is shown, that processes of the heterogeneous nucleation and wave growth have the genetic connection in case of spontaneous fcc-bcc martensitic transformation. The exposition of strain martensite formation is considered in the context of a cryston model.
When a space body enters Earth's atmosphere, its surface is exposed to high pressure and temperatures. The airflow tears off small droplets from the meteoroid forming a cloud of meteorite dust. Can new materials be synthesized in these unique conditions (high temperature, pressure, gaseous atmosphere, catalysts)? As a rule, meteoritic dust dissipates in the atmosphere without a trace or is mixed with terrestrial soil. The Chelyabinsk superbolide, the biggest in the 21st century, which exploded on February 15, 2013 above snowy fields of the Southern Urals, was an exception. Two new types of mat…
The modulated structure of the martensite phase of Ni2MnGa is revisited using high resolution synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction (SXRPD) measurements, which reveals higher order satellite reflections up to the 3rd order and phason broadening of the satellite peaks. The structure refinement, using the (3+1) dimensional superspace group approach, shows that the modulated structure of Ni2MnGa can be described by orthorhombic superspace group Immm(00$γ$)s00 with lattice parameters a= 4.21861(2) Å, b= 5.54696(3) Å, and c= 4.18763(2) Å and an incommensurate modulation wave vector q= 0.43160(3)c*= …
The growth process of of (-1012) twins is studied in Magnesium using atomistic simulations. Two twin seeds are considered and both cases, a specific interface, which places face-to-face prismatic and basal planes, plays an important role. This interface has a low energy corresponding to a cusp in the orientation-dependent interface energy of a twinned bicrystal. This interface appears in several published twin structures and for instance accommodates the large deviations of twin interfaces from (-1012) planes reported recently [Zhang et al., Scr. Mater. 67 (2012) 862].
We study a model of interacting particles in two dimensions to address the relation between crystal-crystal transformations and pressure-induced amorphization. On increasing pressure at very low temperature, our model undergoes a martensitic crystal-crystal transformation. The characteristics of the resulting polycrystalline structure depend on defect density, compression rate, and nucleation and growth barriers. We find two different limiting cases. In one of them the martensite crystals, once nucleated, grow easily perpendicularly to the invariant interface, and the final structure contains …
A number of laws being characteristic for switching waves are illustrated by the examples of waves of a falling dominoes. The specificity of a switching wave at the martensite crystal growth caused by dynamic structure of interphase area is noted. For the first time the influence of finite deformation on the condition of elastic waves generation by non-equilibrium electrons is discussed. The rigid regime of initial excitation of waves is connected with the influence of finite deformations on the threshold value of an inverse population difference of the electronic states.
The crystal structure and magnetoresponsive properties of Fe-doped MnCoGe alloys have been investigated using x-ray diffraction (XRD) and magnetic measurements. By alloying the Fe-containing isostructure compounds into MnCoGe, a magnetostructural transition from paramagnetic austenite to ferromagnetic martensite with large magnetization difference can be realized in a temperature window between the Curie temperatures of the austenite and martensite, resulting in magnetic-field-induced martensitic transformations and large magnetic-entropy changes. A structural and magnetic phase diagram of Fe-…
Single crystals of a new twinned hexagonal perovskite compound Sr8Os6.3O24 have been synthesized, and structural and magnetic properties have been determined. The compound crystallizes in a hexagonal cell with lattice parameters a = 9.6988(3) Å and c = 18.1657(5) Å. The structure is an eight-layered hexagonal B-site deficient perovskite with the layer sequence (ccch)2 and represents the first example of a hexagonal structure among 5d oxides adopting a twin option. The sample shows spontaneous ferromagnetic magnetization below 430 K with a small saturation moment of 0.11 μB/Os ion. This is the …
We present a temperature dependent single crystal x-ray diffraction study of twinned orthorhombic perovskites La1-xCaxMnO3, for x=0.16 and x=0.25. These data show the evolution of the crystal structure from the ferromagnetic insulating state to the ferromagnetic metallic state. The data are modelled in space group Pnma with twin relations based on a distribution of the b axis over three perpendicular cubic axes. The twin model allows full structure determination in the presence of up to six twin fractions using the single crystal x-ray diffraction data.
We study the branching of twins appearing in shape memory alloys at the interface between austenite and martensite. In the framework of three-dimensional non-linear elasticity theory, we propose an explicit, low-energy construction of the branched microstructure, generally applicable to any shape memory material without restrictions on the symmetry class of martensite or on the geometric parameters of the interface. We show that the suggested construction follows the expected energy scaling law, i.e., that (for the surface energy of the twins being sufficiently small) the branching leads to en…
In search for the origins of the extraordinary low twinning stress of Ni-Mn-Ga magnetic shape memory alloys we studied the thermally induced changes of structure in Ni$_{50}$Mn$_{25+x}$Ga$_{25-x}$ ($x$=2.7--3.9) single crystal samples and compared them with twinning stress dependences. The alloys exhibited transformation to five-layered (10M) martensite structure between 297 to 328 K. All samples exhibited magnetic shape memory effect. Just below the transformation temperature the samples had very low twinning stress of about 0.1--0.3 MPa, which increased with decreasing temperature. The struc…
Shape-controlled synthesis of multiply twinned nanostructures is heavily emphasized in nanoscience, in large part due to the desire to control the size, shape, and terminating facets of metal nanoparticles for applications in catalysis. Direct control of the size and shape of solution-grown nanoparticles relies on an understanding of how synthetic parameters alter nanoparticle structures during synthesis. However, while outcome populations can be effectively studied with standard electron microscopy methods, transient structures that appear during some synthetic routes are difficult to study u…
Millimeter size single crystals of double perovskite La2NiMnO6 (LNMO) were grown by the High Temperature Solution Growth Method. The magnetic measurements and polarized Raman spectra between 5 and 350K provide evidence that the crystals have high degree of Ni(2+)/Mn(4+)ordering, small amount of lattice defects and highest Tc = 288K reported so far for ferromagnetic double perovskites. At a microscopic level the crystals are heavily twinned and the effect of twinning on the Raman spectra is analyzed in detail.

Molecular dynamics simulations performed on <110> Cu nanopillars revealed significant difference in deformation behavior of nanopillars with and without twin boundary. The plastic deformation in single crystal Cu nanopillar without twin boundary was dominated by twinning, whereas the introduction of twin boundary changed the deformation mode from twinning to slip consisting of leading partial followed by trailing partial dislocations. This difference in deformation behavior has been attributed to the formation of stair-rod dislocation and its dissociation in the twinned nanopillars.
The different crystal structures of ferromagnetic Ni$_2$MnGa have been calculated using density functional theory (DFT) with special emphasis on the modulated structures 10M and 14M. These are important for understanding the stability of Ni$_2$MnGa martensites and their functionality as shape-memory materials. The modulated structures have been optimized in the calculations and their properties are discussed in relation to the structures without modulation. The occurrence of the modulated structures is related to the soft TA$_2$ phonon mode observed in Ni$_2$MnGa. The latter is related to the …
The mimicry of crystalline microstructure at meso-scale creates a new class of architected materials, termed meta-crystals, and offers effective ways to significantly improve the toughness and eliminate the post-yield collapse of architected materials. This study investigated the mechanical behaviour of polygrain-like meta-crystals fabricated from Ti6Al4V by laser powder bed fusion. The mechanical behaviour of Ti6Al4V meta-crystals is governed by lattice structures across length-scales: the crystalline microstructure, architected crystal-like mesostructures and the quality of lattice struts. D…
Twinning is a common crystallographic phenomenon, which usually occurs in crystals during symmetry-lowering phase transition. Once formed, twin domains play an important role in defining physical properties: for example, twin domains underpin the giant piezoelectric effect in ferroelectrics, superelasticity in ferroelastics and the shape-memory effect in martensitic alloys. Unfortunately, there is still a lack of experimental methods for imaging and characterization of twin domain patterns. Here, we propose a theoretical framework and an algorithm for the recognition of twinned pairs of ferroe…

The cofactor conditions, introduced in James and Zhang, are conditions of compatibility between phases in martensitic materials. They consist of three subconditions: i) the condition that the middle principal stretch of the transformation stretch tensor $\mathbf U$ is unity ($λ_2 = 1$), ii) the condition $\mathbf a \cdot \mathbf U\, \cof (\mathbf U^2 - \mathbf I)\mathbf n = 0$, where the vectors $\mathbf a$ and $\mathbf n$ are certain vectors arising in the specification of the twin system, and iii) the inequality ${\rm tr} \mathbf U^2 + \det \mathbf U^2 -(1/4) |\mathbf a|^2 |\mathbf n|^2\ge 2…
The demonstration that Nanocrystalline Diamond (NCD) can retain the superior Young's modulus (1,100 GPa) of single crystal diamond twinned with its ability to be grown at low temperatures (<450 °C) has driven a revival into the growth and applications of NCD thin films. However, owing to the competitive growth of crystals the resulting film has a roughness that evolves with film thickness, preventing NCD films from reaching their full potential in devices where a smooth film is required. To reduce this roughness, films have been polished using Chemical Mechanical Polishing (CMP). A Logitech Tr…
Phase transition of iron, as a prototype of martensite phase transition under dynamic loadings, exhibits huge diverges in its TP among experiments with different pressure medium and loading rates, even in the same initial samples. Great achievements are made in understanding strain or stress dependence of the TP under dynamic loadings. However, present understandings on the strain rate dependence of the TP are far from clear, even a virgin for extreme high strain rates. In this work, large scale NEMD simulations are conducted to study the effects of strain rates on the phase transition of iron…
The Landau spectrum of bismuth is complex and includes many angle-dependent lines in the extreme quantum limit. The adequacy of single-particle theory to describe this spectrum in detail has been an open issue. Here, we present a study of angle-resolved Nernst effect in bismuth, which maps the angle-resolved Landau spectrum for the entire solid angle up to 28 T. The experimental map is in good agreement with the results of a theoretical model with parabolic dispersion for holes and an extended Dirac Hamiltonian for electrons. The angular dependence of additional lines in the Landau spectrum al…
The influence of Twin Boundaries (TB) on the Flux Line Lattice(FLL) structure was investigated by Small Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS). YBaCuO single crystals possessing different TB densities were studied. The SANS experiments show that the TB strongly modify the structure of the FLL. The flux lines meander as soon as the magnetic field makes an angle with the TB direction. According to the value of this angle but also to the ratio of the flux lines density over the TB density, one observes that the FLL exhibits two different unit cells in the plane perpendicular to the magnetic field. One i…
