A local homeomorphism between open subsets of a locally compact Hausdorff space induces dynamical systems with a wide range of applications, including in C*-algebras. In this paper, we introduce the concepts of nonwandering and wandering sets for such systems and show that, under mild conditions, the metric entropy is concentrated in the nonwandering set. More generally, we demonstrate that the entropy of the system is the maximum of the entropies of the systems restricted to the nonwandering set and the closure of the wandering set. We illustrate these results with several examples, including applications to subshifts over countable alphabets.
We prove that a homeomorphism of the torus homotopic to the identity whose rotation set is reduced to a single totally irrational vector is chain-recurrent. In fact, we show that pseudo-orbits can be chosen with a small number of jumps, in particular, that the nonwandering set is weakly transitive. We give an example showing that the nonwandering set of such a homeomorphism may not be transitive.
We study homeomorphisms of compact metric spaces whose restriction to the nonwandering set has the pseudo-orbit tracing property. We prove that if there are positively expansive measures, then the topological entropy is positive. Some short applications of this result are included.
Let $f$ be a homeomorphism of the closed annulus $A$ isotopic to the identity, and let $X\subset {\rm Int}A$ be an $f$-invariant continuum which separates $A$ into two domains, the upper domain $U_+$ and the lower domain $U_-$. Fixing a lift of $f$ to the universal cover of $A$, one defines the rotation set $\tilde ρ(X)$ of $X$ by means of the invariant probabilities on $X$. For any rational number $p/q\in \tildeρ(X)$, $f$ is shown to admit a $p/q$ periodic point in $X$, provided that (1) $X$ consists of nonwandering points or (2) $X$ is an attractor and the frontiers of $U_-$ and $U_+$ coinci…
Let $X$ be a regular curve and let $f: X\to X$ be a monotone map. In this paper, nonwandering set of $f$ and the structure of special $α$-limit sets for $f$ are investigated. We show that AP$(f)= \textrm{R}(f) =Ω(f)$, where AP$(f)$, $\textrm{R}(f)$ and $Ω(f)$ are the sets of almost periodic points, recurrent points and nonwandering of $f$, respectively. This result extends that of Naghmouchi established, whenever $f$ is a homeomorphism on a regular curve [J. Difference Equ. Appl., 23 (2017), 1485--1490] and [Colloquium Math., 162 (2020), 263--277], and that of Abdelli and Abdelli, Abouda and M…
In this paper, we introduce topological entropy for dynamical systems generated by a single local homeomorphism (Deaconu-Renault systems). More precisely, we generalize Adler, Konheim, and McAndrew's definition of entropy via covers and Bowen's definition of entropy via separated sets. We propose a definition of factor map between Deaconu-Renault systems and show that entropy (via separated sets) always decreases under uniformly continuous factor maps. Since the variational principle does not hold in the full generality of our setting, we show that the proposed entropy via covers is a lower bo…
This article deals with nonwandering (e.g. area-preserving) homeomorphisms of the torus $\mathbb{T}^2$ which are homotopic to the identity and strictly toral, in the sense that they exhibit dynamical properties that are not present in homeomorphisms of the annulus or the plane. This includes all homeomorphisms which have a rotation set with nonempty interior. We define two types of points: inessential and essential. The set of inessential points $ine(f)$ is shown to be a disjoint union of periodic topological disks ("elliptic islands"), while the set of essential points $ess(f)$ is an essentia…
We study the polynomial entropy of the wandering part of any invertible dynamical system on a compact metric space. As an application we compute the polynomial entropy of Brouwer homeomorphisms (fixed point free orientation preserving homeomorphisms of the plane), and show in particular that it takes every real value greater or equal to 2.
We prove that the polynomial entropy of an orientation preserving homeomorphism of the circle equals 1 when the homeomorphism is not conjugate to a rotation and that it is 0 otherwise. In a second part we prove that the polynomial entropy of a flow on the two dimensional torus associated with a $C^1$ nonvanishing vector field is less that $1$. We moreover prove that when the flow possesses periodic orbits its polynomial entropy equals 1 unless it is conjugate to a rotation (in this last case, the polynomial entropy is zero).
We prove that every self-homeomorphism $h : K_s \to K_s$ on the inverse limit space $K_s$ of the tent map $T_s$ with slope $s \in (\sqrt 2, 2]$ has topological entropy $\htop(h) = |R| \log s$, where $R \in \Z$ is such that $h$ and $σ^R$ are isotopic. Conclusions on the possible values of the entropy of homeomorphisms of the inverse limit space of a (renormalizable) quadratic map are drawn as well.
We study the dynamics of piecewise affine surface homeomorphisms from the point of view of their entropy. Under the assumption of positive topological entropy, we establish the existence of finitely many ergodic and invariant probability measures maximizing entropy and prove a multiplicative lower bound for the number of periodic points. This is intended as a step towards the understanding of surface diffeomorphisms. We proceed by building a jump transformation, using not first returns but carefully selected "good" returns to dispense with Markov partitions. We control these good returns throu…
In this paper we study the polynomial entropy of homeomorphism on compact metric space. We construct a homeomorphism on a compact metric space with vanishing polynomial entropy that it is not equicontinuous. Also we give examples with arbitrarily small polynomial entropy. Finally, we show that expansive homeomorphisms and positively expansive maps of compact metric spaces with infinitely many points have polynomial entropy greater or equal than 1.
Let $f:X\to X$ be a self homeomorphism of a continuum $X$, we show that the topological entropy of the induced system $(2^X,2^f)$ is infinite provided that $X\setminus Ω(f)$ is not empty. If furthermore $X$ is a regular curve then it is shown that $(2^X,2^f)$ has infinite topological entropy if and only if $X\setminus Ω(f)$ is not empty. Moreover we prove for the induced system $(C(X),C(f))$ the equivalence between the following properties: (i) zero topological entropy; (ii) there is no Li-Yorke pair and (iii) for any periodic subcontinnum $A$ of $X$ and any connected component $C$ of $X\setmi…
For bi-Lipschitz homeomorphisms of a compact manifold it is known that topological entropy is always finite. For compact manifolds of dimension two or greater, we show that in the closure of the space of bi-Lipschitz homeomorphisms, with respect to either the Hölder or the Sobolev topologies, topological entropy is generically infinite. We also prove versions of the $C^1$-Closing Lemma in either of these spaces. Finally, we give examples of homeomorphisms with infinite topological entropy which are Hölder and/or Sobolev of every exponent.
There are two main subjects in this paper. 1) For a topological dynamical system $(X,T)$ we study the topological entropy of its "functional envelopes" (the action of $T$ by left composition on the space of all continuous self-maps or on the space of all self-homeomorphisms of $X$). In particular we prove that for zero-dimensional spaces $X$ both entropies are infinite except when $T$ is equicontinuous (then both equal zero). 2) We call $Slovak$ $space$ any compact metric space whose homeomorphism group is cyclic and generated by a minimal homeomorphism. Using Slovak spaces we provide examples…
We prove that the dilatation of any pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism on a translation surface that belong to a hyperelliptic component is bounded from below uniformly by sqrt{2}. This is in contrast to Penner's asymptotic. Penner proved that the logarithm of the least dilatation of any pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism on a surface of genus g tends to zero at rate 1/g (as g goes to infinity). We also show that our uniform lower bound sqrt{2} is sharp. More precisely the least dilatation of a pseudo-Anosov on a genus g>1 translation surface in a hyperelliptic component belongs to the interval ]sqrt{2},sqr…
For actions of a sofic group on probability spaces, the entropy has been defined by Bowen, with an extension by Kerr-Li. In particular, when the action is by homeomorphisms of a compact space preserving a given measure, Kerr-Li show one can compute the measure-theoretic entropy in a manner which uses the topology of the space. We show how to compute the entropy of a an action of homeomorphisms of a Polish space preserving a given measure, also in a manner which uses the topology of the space. We give applications to spectral properties of actions with positive entropy, as well as for actions o…
In this work we develop a new criterion for the existence of topological horseshoes for surface homeomorphisms in the isotopy class of the identity. Based on our previous work on forcing theory, this new criterion is purely topological and can be expressed in terms of equivariant Brouwer foliations and transverse trajectories. We then apply this new tool in the study of the dynamics of homeomorphisms of surfaces with zero genus and null topological entropy and we obtain several applications. For homeomorphisms of the open annulus $\mathbb{A}$ with zero topological entropy, we show that rotatio…
We show that if $f$ is an annular homeomorphism admitting an attractor which is an irreducible annular continua with two different rotation numbers, then the entropy of $f$ is positive. Further, the entropy is shown to be associated to a $C^0$-robust rotational horseshoe. On the other hand, we construct examples of annular homeomorphisms with such attractors so that the rotation interval is uniformly large but the entropy approaches zero as much as desired. The developed techniques allow us to obtain similar results in the context of Birkhoff attractors.
In this paper, we define a new notion of "freely tracing property by free chains" on $G$-like continua and we prove that a positive topological entropy homeomorphism on a $G$-like continuum admits a Cantor set $Z$ such that every tuple of finite points in $Z$ is an $IE$-tuple of $f$ and $Z$ has the freely tracing property by free chains. Also, by use of this notion, we prove the following theorem: If $G$ is any graph and a homeomorphism $f$ on a $G$-like continuum $X$ has positive topological entropy, then there is a Cantor set $Z$ which is related to both the chaotic behaviors of Kerr and Li …
For a homeomorphism $T \colon X \to X$ of a compact metric space $X$, the stabilized automorphism group $\text{Aut}^{(\infty)}(T)$ consists of all self-homeomorphisms of $X$ which commute with some power of $T$. Motivated by the study of these groups in the context of shifts of finite type, we introduce a certain entropy for groups called local $\mathcal{P}$ entropy. We show that when $(X,T)$ is a non-trivial mixing shift of finite type, the local $\mathcal{P}$ entropy of the group $\text{Aut}^{(\infty)}(T)$ is determined by the topological entropy of $(X,T)$. We use this to give a complete cl…
It is known that piecewise affine surface homeomorphisms always have measures of maximal entropy. This is easily seen to fail in the discontinuous case. Here we describe a piecewise affine, globally continuous surface map with no measure of maximal entropy.
This paper studies homeomorphisms of surfaces isotopic to the identity by means of purely topological methods and Brouwer theory. The main development is a novel theory of orbit forcing using maximal isotopies and transverse foliations. This allows us to derive new proofs for some known results as well as some new applications, among which we note the following: we extend Franks and Handel's classification of zero entropy maps of $S^2$ for non-wandering homeomorphisms; we show that if $f$ is a Hamiltonian homeomorphism of the annulus, then the rotation set of $f$ is either a singleton or it co…
A homeomorphism of a compact metric space is {\em tight} provided every non-degenerate compact connected (not necessarily invariant) subset carries positive entropy. It is shown that every $C^{1+α}$ diffeomorphism of a closed surface factors to a tight homeomorphism of a generalized cactoid (roughly, a surface with nodes) by a semi-conjugacy whose fibers carry zero entropy.
In this paper we consider torus homeomorphisms $f$ homotopic to Dehn twists. We prove that if the vertical rotation set of $f$ is reduced to zero, then there exists a compact connected essential "horizontal" set K, invariant under $f$. In other words, if we consider the lift $\hat{f}$ of $f$ to the cylinder, which has zero vertical rotation number, then all points have uniformly bounded motion under iterates of $\hat{f}$. Also, we give a simple explicit condition which, when satisfied, implies that the vertical rotation set contains an interval and thus also implies positive topological entrop…
In 1991 Llibre and MacKay proved that if $f$ is a 2-torus homeomorphism isotopic to identity and the rotation set of $f$ has a non empty interior then $f$ has positive topological entropy. Here, we give a converselike theorem. We show that the interior of the rotation set of a 2-torus $C^{1+ α}$ diffeomorphism isotopic to identity of positive topological entropy is not empty, under the additional hypotheses that $f$ is topologically transitive and irreducible. We also give examples that show that these hypotheses are necessary.
Let f be an orientation-preserving homeomorphism of the disk D, P a finite invariant subset and [f] the isotopy class of f in D¶. We give a non trivial lower bound of the topological entropy for maps in [f], using the spectral radius of some specializations in GL(n,C) of the Burau matrix associated with [f] and we discuss some examples.
Let $M$ be a compact surface with boundary. We are interested in the question of how a group action on $M$ permutes a finite invariant set $X \subset int(M)$. More precisely, how the algebraic properties of the induced group of permutations of a finite invariant set affects the dynamical properties of the group. Our main result shows that in many circumstances if the induced permutation group is not solvable then among the homeomorphisms in the group there must be one with a pseudo-Anosov component. We formulate this in terms of the mapping class group relative to the finite set and show the s…

We investigate in this work some situations where it is possible to estimate or determine the upper and the lower $q$-generalized fractal dimensions $D^{\pm}_μ(q)$, $q\in\mathbb{R}$, of invariant measures associated with continuous transformations over compact metric spaces. In particular, we present an alternative proof of Young's Theorem~\cite{Young} for the generalized fractal dimensions of the Bowen-Margulis measure associated with a $C^{1+α}$-Axiom A system over a two-dimensional compact Riemannian manifold $M$. We also present estimates for the generalized fractal dimensions of an ergodi…
For a continuous map $f$ on a compact metric space we study the geometry and entropy of the generalized rotation set $\R(Φ)$. Here $Φ=(ϕ_1,...,ϕ_m)$ is a $m$-dimensional continuous potential and $\R(Φ)$ is the set of all $μ$-integrals of $Φ$ and $μ$ runs over all $f$-invariant probability measures. It is easy to see that the rotation set is a compact and convex subset of $\bR^m$. We study the question if every compact and convex set is attained as a rotation set of a particular set of potentials within a particular class of dynamical systems. We give a positive answer in the case of subshifts …
