It is known that piecewise affine surface homeomorphisms always have measures of maximal entropy. This is easily seen to fail in the discontinuous case. Here we describe a piecewise affine, globally continuous surface map with no measure of maximal entropy.
A class of piecewise affine hyperbolic maps on a bounded subset of the plane is considered. It is shown that if a map from this class is sufficiently area-expanding then almost surely this map has an absolutely continuous invariant measure.
We show that the stationary measure for some random systems of two piecewise affine homeomorphisms of the interval is singular, verifying partially a conjecture by Alsedà and Misiurewicz and contributing to a question of Navas on the absolute continuity of stationary measures, considered in the setup of semigroups of piecewise affine circle homeomorphisms. We focus on the case of resonant boundary derivatives.
We prove that for continuous maps on the interval, the existence of an n-cycle, implies the existence of n-1 points which interwind the original ones and are permuted by the map. We then use this combinatorial result to show that piecewise affine maps (with no zero slope) cannot be infinitely renormalizable.
We use canonical Markov extensions (Hofbauer towers) to give an explicit construction of the natural extensions of various measure preserving endomorphisms, and present some applications to particular examples.
We present a one-parameter family of continuous, piecewise affine, area preserving maps of the square, which are inspired by a dynamical system in game theory. Interested in the coexistence of stochastic and (quasi-)periodic behaviour, we investigate invariant annuli separated by invariant circles. For certain parameter values, we explicitly construct invariant circles both of rational and irrational rotation numbers, and present numerical experiments of the dynamics on the annuli bounded by these circles.
Consider a multimodal interval map $f$ of $C^3$ with non-flat critical points. We establish several characterizations of the map $f$ is quasi-symmetrically conjugated to a piecewise affine map in the case $f$ is topologically exact and all of its periodic points are hyperbolic repelling. In particular, we give a negative answer to a question posted by Henk Bruin in \cite{Bru96}.
We construct a chaotic discrete-time continuous-state Hopfield network with piecewise-affine nonnegative activation functions and weight matrix with small positive entries. More precisely, there exists a Cantor set $C$ in the state space such that the network has sensitive dependence on initial conditions at initial states in $C$ and the network orbit of each initial state in $C$ has $C$ as its $ω$-limit set. The approach we use is based on tools developed and employed recently in the study of the topological dynamics of piecewise-contractions. The parameters of the chaotic network are explici…
We study the dynamics of piecewise affine surface homeomorphisms from the point of view of their entropy. Under the assumption of positive topological entropy, we establish the existence of finitely many ergodic and invariant probability measures maximizing entropy and prove a multiplicative lower bound for the number of periodic points. This is intended as a step towards the understanding of surface diffeomorphisms. We proceed by building a jump transformation, using not first returns but carefully selected "good" returns to dispense with Markov partitions. We control these good returns throu…
We consider a class of simple one parameter families of interval maps, and we study how metric (resp. topological) entropy changes as the parameter varies. We show that in many cases the entropy displays a semi-regular behaviour, i.e. it is smooth on an open and dense set. This feature is due to a combinatorial property called matching
In this paper, we study the dimension theory of a class of piecewise affine systems in euclidean spaces suggested by Michael Barnsley, with some applications to the fractal image compression. It is a more general version of the class considered in the work of Keane, Simon and Solomyak [The dimension of graph directed attractors with overlaps on the line, with an application to a problem in fractal image recognition. {\it Fund. Math.}, {\bf 180}(3):279-292, 2003] and can be considered as the continuation of the works [On the dimension of self-affine sets and measures with overlaps. {\it Proc. A…
We consider the growth of heights of the points of the orbits of (piecewise) affine maps of the plane, with rational parameters. We analyse the asymptotic growth rate of both global and local ($p$-adic) heights, for the primes $p$ that divide the parameters. We show that almost all the points in a domain of linearity (such as an elliptic island in an area-preserving map) have the same exponential growth rate. We also show that the convergence of the $p$-adic height may be non-uniform, with arbitrarily large fluctuations occurring arbitrarily close to any point. We explore numerically the behav…
Let $-1<λ<1$ and $f:[0,1)\to\mathbb{R}$ be a piecewise $λ$-affine map, that is, there exist points $0=c_0<c_1<\cdots <c_{n-1}<c_n=1$ and real numbers $b_1,\ldots,b_n$ such that $f(x)=λx+b_i$ for every $x\in [c_{i-1},c_i)$. We prove that, for Lebesgue almost every $δ\in\mathbb{R}$, the map $f_δ=f+δ\,({\rm mod}\,1)$ is asymptotically periodic. More precisely, $f_δ$ has at most $2n$ periodic orbits and the $ω$-limit set of every $x\in [0,1)$ is a periodic orbit.
Let $I=[0,1)$, $-1<λ<1$ and $f\colon I\to I$ be a piecewise $λ$-affine map of the interval $I$, i.e., there exist a partition $0=a_0<a_1<\cdots< a_{k-1}<a_k=1$ of the interval $I$ into $k\geq2$ subintervals and $b_1,\ldots, b_k\in\mathbb{R}$ such that $f(x)=λx+ b_i$ for every $x\in[a_{i-1},a_{i})$ and $i=1,\ldots,k$. The exceptional set $\mathcal{E}_f$ of $f$ is the set of parameters $δ\in\mathbb{R}$ such that $R_δ\circ f$ is not asymptotically periodic, where $R_δ\colon I\to I$ is the rotation of angle $δ$. In this paper we prove that $\mathcal{E}_f$ has zero Hausdorff dimension. We derive th…
For flows, the singular cycles connecting saddle periodic orbit and saddle equilibrium can poten- tially result in the so-called singular horseshoe, which means the existence of a non-uniformly hyperbolic chaotic invariant set. However, it is very hard to find a specific dynamical system that exhibits such singular cycles in general. In this paper, the existence of the singular cycles involved in saddle periodic orbits is studied by two types of piecewise affine systems: one is the piecewise affine system having an admissible saddle point with only real eigenvalues and an admissible saddle per…
We study maps of the unit interval whose graph is made up of two increasing segments and which are injective in an extended sense. Such maps $f_{\p}$ are parametrized by a quintuple $\p$ of real numbers satisfying inequations. Viewing $f_{\p}$ as a circle map, we show that it has a rotation number $ρ(f_{\p})$ and we compute $ρ(f_{\p})$ as a function of $\p$ in terms of Hecke-Mahler series. As a corollary, we prove that $ρ(f_{\p})$ is a rational number when the components of $\p$ are algebraic numbers.
Mixed-mode oscillations (MMOs) are complex oscillatory patterns in which large-amplitude relaxation oscillations (LAOs) alternate with small-amplitude oscillations (SAOs). MMOs are found in singularly perturbed systems of ordinary differential equations of slow-fast type, and are typically related to the presence of so-called folded singularities and the corresponding canard trajectories in such systems. Here, we introduce a canonical family of three-dimensional slow-fast systems that exhibit MMOs which are induced by relaxation-type dynamics, and which are hence based on a "jump mechanism", r…
The topological entropy of piecewise affine maps is studied. It is shown that singularities may contribute to the entropy only if there is angular expansion and we bound the entropy via the expansion rates of the map. As a corollary we deduce that non-expanding conformal piecewise affine maps have zero topological entropy. We estimate the entropy of piecewise affine skew-products. Examples of abnormal entropy growth are provided.
We study the coarse geometry of the moduli space of dilation tori with two singularities and the dynamical properties of the action of the Teichmuller flow on this moduli space. This leads to a proof that the vertical foliation of a dilation torus is almost always Morse-Smale. As a corollary, we get that the generic piecewise affine circle homeomorphism with two break points -with respect to the Lebesgue measure- is Morse-Smale.
We study the complexity of the itineraries of injective piecewise contracting maps on the interval. We prove that for any such map the complexity function of any itinerary is eventually affine. We also prove that the growth rate of the complexity is bounded from above by the number $N-1$ of discontinuities of the map. To show that this bound is optimal, we construct piecewise affine contracting maps whose itineraries all have the complexity $(N-1)n +1$. In these examples, the asymptotic dynamics takes place in a minimal Cantor set containing all the discontinuities.
Let $f : [0,1)\rightarrow [0,1)$ be a $2$-interval piecewise affine increasing map which is injective but not surjective. Such a map $f$ has a rotation number and can be parametrized by three real numbers. We make fully explicit the dynamics of $f$ thanks to two specific functions $δ$ and $ϕ$ depending on these parameters whose definitions involve Hecke-Mahler series. As an application, we show that the rotation number of $f$ is rational, when the three parameters are algebraic numbers.
We determine periodic and aperiodic points of certain piecewise affine maps in the Euclidean plane. Using these maps, we prove for $λ\in\{\frac{\pm1\pm\sqrt5}2,\pm\sqrt2,\pm\sqrt3\}$ that all integer sequences $(a_k)_{k\in\mathbb Z}$ satisfying $0\le a_{k-1}+λa_k+a_{k+1}<1$ are periodic.
In this paper, we introduce a family of second-order sigma delta quantization schemes for analog-to-digital conversion which are `quiet' : quantization output is guaranteed to fall to zero at the onset of vanishing input. In the process, we prove that the origin is a globally attractive fixed point for the related family of asymmetrically-damped piecewise affine maps. Our proof of convergence is twofold: first, we construct a trapping set using a Lyapunov-type argument; we then take advantage of the asymmetric structure of the maps under consideration to prove convergence to the origin from wi…
One of the most basic, longstanding open problems in the theory of dynamical systems is whether reachability is decidable for one-dimensional piecewise affine maps with two intervals. In this paper we prove that for injective maps, it is decidable. We also study various related problems, in each case either establishing decidability, or showing that they are closely connected to Diophantine properties of certain transcendental numbers, analogous to the positivity problem for linear recurrence sequences. Lastly, we consider topological properties of orbits of one-dimensional piecewise affine ma…
In this paper we consider piecewise affine differential equations modeling gene networks. We work with arbitrary decay rates, and under a local hypothesis expressed as an alignment condition of successive focal points. The interaction graph of the system may be rather complex (multiple intricate loops of any sign, multiple thresholds...). Our main result is an alternative theorem showing that, if a sequence of region is periodically visited by trajectories, then under our hypotheses, there exists either a unique stable periodic solution, or the origin attracts all trajectories in this sequence…
For a class of piecewise hyperbolic maps in two dimensions, we propose a combinatorial definition of topological entropy by counting the maximal, open, connected components of the phase space on which iterates of the map are smooth. We prove that this quantity dominates the measure theoretic entropies of all invariant probability measures of the system, and then construct an invariant measure whose entropy equals the proposed topological entropy. We prove that our measure is the unique measure of maximal entropy, that it is ergodic, gives positive measure to every open set, and has exponential…
In this paper we consider a class of piecewise affine Hamiltonian vector fields whose orbits are piecewise straight lines. We give a first classification result of such systems and show that the orbit-structure of the flow of such a differential equation is surprisingly rich.
In this paper the existence and unicity of a stable periodic orbit is proven, for a class of piecewise affine differential equations in dimension 3 or more, provided their interaction structure is a negative feedback loop. It is also shown that the same systems converge toward a unique stable equilibrium point in dimension 2. This extends a theorem of Snoussi, which showed the existence of these orbits only. The considered class of equations is usually studied as a model of gene regulatory networks. It is not assumed that all decay rates are identical, which is biologically irrelevant, but has…
We solve the center-focus problem in a class of piecewise quadratic polynomial differential systems with an invariant straight line. The separation curve is also a straight line which is not invariant. We provide families having at the origin a weak-foci of maximal order. In the continuous class, the cyclicity problem is also solved, being $3$ such maximal number. Moreover, for the discontinuous class but without sliding segment, we prove the existence of $7$ limit cycles of small amplitude.
In this work we study the renormalization operator acting on piecewise smooth homeomorphisms on the circle, that turns out to be essentially the study of Rauzy-Veech renormalizations of generalized interval exchanges maps with genus one. In particular we show that renormalizations of such maps with zero mean nonlinearity and satisfying certain smoothness and combinatorial assumptions converges to the set of piecewise affine interval exchange maps.
Hybrid systems, and especially piecewise affine (PWA) systems, are often used to model gene regulatory networks. In this paper we elaborate on previous work about control problems for this class of models, using also some recent results guaranteeing the existence and uniqueness of limit cycles, based solely on a discrete abstraction of the system and its interaction structure. Our aim is to control the transition graph of the PWA system to obtain an oscillatory behaviour, which is indeed of primary functional importance in numerous biological networks; we show how it is possible to control the…
We introduce simple models of genetic regulatory networks and we proceed to the mathematical analysis of their dynamics. The models are discrete time dynamical systems generated by piecewise affine contracting mappings whose variables represent gene expression levels. When compared to other models of regulatory networks, these models have an additional parameter which is identified as quantifying interaction delays. In spite of their simplicity, their dynamics presents a rich variety of behaviours. This phenomenology is not limited to piecewise affine model but extends to smooth nonlinear disc…
We propose a systematic approach to the construction of invariant union of polytopes (IUP) in expanding piecewise affine mappings whose linear components are isotropic scalings. The approach relies on using empirical information embedded in trajectories in order to infer, and then to solve, a so-called conditioning problem for some generating collection of polytopes. A conditioning problem consists of a series of requirements on the polytopes' localisation and on the dynamical transitions between these elements. The core element of the approach is a reformulation of the problem as a set of pie…
For general quantum systems the semiclassical behaviour of eigenfunctions in relation to the ergodic properties of the underlying classical system is quite difficult to understand. The Wignerfunctions of eigenstates converge weakly to invariant measures of the classical system, the so called quantum limits, and one would like to understand which invariant measures can occur that way, thereby classifying the semiclassical behaviour of eigenfunctions. We introduce a class of maps on the torus for whose quantisations we can understand the set of quantum limits in great detail. In particular we ca…
