The topological entropy of piecewise affine maps is studied. It is shown that singularities may contribute to the entropy only if there is angular expansion and we bound the entropy via the expansion rates of the map. As a corollary we deduce that non-expanding conformal piecewise affine maps have zero topological entropy. We estimate the entropy of piecewise affine skew-products. Examples of abnormal entropy growth are provided.

It is known that piecewise affine surface homeomorphisms always have measures of maximal entropy. This is easily seen to fail in the discontinuous case. Here we describe a piecewise affine, globally continuous surface map with no measure of maximal entropy.
We consider some classes of piecewise expanding maps in finite dimensional spaces having invariant probability measures which are absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue measure. We derive an entropy formula for such measures and, using this entropy formula, in some parametrized families we present sufficient conditions for the continuity of that entropy with respect to the parameter. We apply our results to a classical one-dimensional family of tent maps and a family of two-dimensional maps which arises as the limit of return maps when a homoclinic tangency is unfolded by a family of t…
We study the dynamics of piecewise affine surface homeomorphisms from the point of view of their entropy. Under the assumption of positive topological entropy, we establish the existence of finitely many ergodic and invariant probability measures maximizing entropy and prove a multiplicative lower bound for the number of periodic points. This is intended as a step towards the understanding of surface diffeomorphisms. We proceed by building a jump transformation, using not first returns but carefully selected "good" returns to dispense with Markov partitions. We control these good returns throu…
We investigate the flexibility of the entropy (topological and metric) for the class of piecewise expanding unimodal maps. We show that the only restrictions for the values of the topological and metric entropies in this class are that both are positive, the topological entropy is at most $\log 2$, and by the Variational Principle, the metric entropy is not larger than the topological entropy. In order to have a better control on the metric entropy, we work mainly with topologically mixing piecewise expanding skew tent maps, for which there are only 2 different slopes. For those maps, there is…
In this paper we study some aspects of thermodynamic formalism, more specifically topological pressure and, as a consequence, topological entropy for piecewise smooth vector fields, using topological conjugation with shift maps and the Perron- Frobenius Operator. Some relationships between entropy and Hausdorff dimensions are also investigated.

For a class of piecewise hyperbolic maps in two dimensions, we propose a combinatorial definition of topological entropy by counting the maximal, open, connected components of the phase space on which iterates of the map are smooth. We prove that this quantity dominates the measure theoretic entropies of all invariant probability measures of the system, and then construct an invariant measure whose entropy equals the proposed topological entropy. We prove that our measure is the unique measure of maximal entropy, that it is ergodic, gives positive measure to every open set, and has exponential…
It is well known that a continuous piecewise monotone interval map with positive topological entropy is semiconjugate to a map of a constant slope and the same entropy, and if it is additionally transitive then this semiconjugacy is actually a conjugacy. We generalize this result to piecewise continuous piecewise monotone interval maps, and as a consequence, get it also for piecewise monotone graph maps. We show that assigning to a continuous transitive piecewise monotone map of positive entropy a map of constant slope conjugate to it defines an operator, and show that this operator is not con…
Non-smooth vector fields does not have necessarily the property of uniqueness of solution passing through a point and this is responsible to enrich the behavior of the system. Even on the plane non-smooth vector fields can be chaotic, a feature impossible for the smooth or continuous case. We propose a new approach towards a better understanding of chaos for non-smooth vector fields and this is done by studying the entropy of the system. In this work we set the ground for one to begin the study of entropy for non-smooth vector fields. We construct a metric space of all possible trajectories of…
We consider a class of simple one parameter families of interval maps, and we study how metric (resp. topological) entropy changes as the parameter varies. We show that in many cases the entropy displays a semi-regular behaviour, i.e. it is smooth on an open and dense set. This feature is due to a combinatorial property called matching
A well-known result of Bill Parry shows that a topologically transitive continuous piecewise monotone mapping with positive topological entropy is conjugate to a uniformly piecewise linear mapping with slope determined by the entropy. In this note we generalise Parry's result somewhat to what we call the class of essentially transitive mappings. This generalisation is of some interest in as much as for mappings with one turning point the converse also holds, i.e., a uniformly piecewise linear mapping with one turning point and with slope greater than 1 is essentially transitive.
For piecewise monotone interval maps we look at Birkhoff spectra for regular potential functions. This means considering the Hausdorff dimension of the set of points for which the Birkhoff average of the potential takes a fixed value. In the uniformly hyperbolic case we obtain complete results, in the case with parabolic behaviour we are able to describe the part of the sets where the lower Lyapunov exponent is positive. In addition we give some lower bounds on the full spectrum in this case. This is an extension of work of Hofbauer on the entropy and Lyapunov spectra.
For any transitive piecewise monotonic map for which the set of periodic measures is dense in the set of ergodic invariant measures (such as monotonic mod one transformations and piecewise monotonic maps with two monotonic pieces), we show that the set of points for which the Birkhoff average of a continuous function does not exist (called the irregular set) is either empty or has full topological entropy. This generalizes Thompson's theorem for irregular sets of $β$-transformations, and reduces a complete description of irregular sets of transitive piecewise monotonic maps to Hofbauer-Raith p…
This note illustrates the strategy of our paper on piecewise affine surface homeomorphisms by giving a new proof of the finite multiplicity of the maximum entropy measure of Anosov diffeomorphisms (here on surfaces). This approach avoids the explicit construction of Markov partitions and will be applied elsewhere to some non-uniformly hyperbolic diffeomorphisms.
We consider Milnor's "tower algorithm" in the space of piecewise monotone maps, an iterative algorithm on the space of metrics which unifies, on the one hand, Thurston's iterative scheme which converges to holomorphic models, and, on the other hand, the theory of piecewise linear models coming from kneading theory. We prove that the algorithm converges for unimodal maps of high entropy, and provide examples where it does not converge for unimodal maps of low entropy and multimodal maps of higher degree.
We study a class of stationary processes indexed by $\Z^d$ that are defined via minors of $d$-dimensional (multilevel) Toeplitz matrices. We obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for phase multiplicity (the existence of a phase transition) analogous to that which occurs in statistical mechanics. Phase uniqueness is equivalent to the presence of a strong $K$ property, a particular strengthening of the usual $K$ (Kolmogorov) property. We show that all of these processes are Bernoulli shifts (isomorphic to i.i.d. processes in the sense of ergodic theory). We obtain estimates of their entropi…
How can we interpret the infimum of Lipschitz constants in a conjugacy class of interval maps? For positive entropy maps, the exponential of the topological entropy gives a well-known lower bound. We show that for piecewise monotone interval maps as well as for $C^{\infty}$ interval maps, these two quantities are equal, but for countably piecewise monotone maps, the inequality can be strict. Moreover, in the topologically mixing and Markov case, we characterize the infimum of Lipschitz constants as the exponential of the Salama entropy of a certain reverse Markov chain associated with the map.…
We study the dependence of the topological entropy of piecewise monotonic maps with holes under perturbations, for example sliding a hole of fixed size at uniform speed or expanding a hole with uniform expansion. We show that under suitable conditions the topological entropy varies locally Hoelder continuously with the local Hoelder exponent depending itself on the value of the topological entropy.
We introduce and study the notion of a directional complexity and entropy for maps of degree 1 on the circle. For piecewise affine Markov maps we use symbolic dynamics to relate this complexity to the symbolic complexity. We apply a combinatorial machinery to obtain exact formulas for the directional entropy, to find the maximal directional entropy, and to show that it equals the topological entropy of the map. Keywords: Rotation interval, Space-time window, Directional complexity, Directional entropy;
We study the Manneville map f(x)=x+x^z (mod 1), with z>1, from a computational point of view, studying the behaviour of the Algorithmic Information Content. In particular, we consider a family of piecewise linear maps that gives examples of algorithmic behaviour ranging from the fully to the mildly chaotic, and show that the Manneville map is a member of this family.
We give an algorithm, based on the $ϕ$-expansion of Parry, in order to compute the topological entropy of a class of shift spaces. The idea is the solve an inverse problem for the dynamical systems $βx+α\mod1$.The first part is an exposition of the $ϕ$-expansion applied to piecewise monotone dynamical systems. We formulate for the validity of the $ϕ$-expansion, necessary and sufficient conditions, which are different from those in Parry's paper.
In this paper we will develop a very general approach which shows that critical relations of holomorphic maps on the complex plane unfold transversally in a positively oriented way. We will mainly illustrate this approach to obtain transversality for a wide class of one-parameter families of interval maps, for example maps with flat critical points, piecewise linear maps, maps with discontinuities but also for families of maps with complex analytic extensions such as certain polynomial-like maps.
We study the asymptotic dynamics of maps which are piecewise contracting on a compact space. These maps are Lipschitz continuous, with Lipschitz constant smaller than one, when restricted to any piece of a finite and dense union of disjoint open pieces. We focus on the topological and the dynamical properties of the (global) attractor of the orbits that remain in this union. As a starting point, we show that the attractor consists of a finite set of periodic points when it does not intersect the boundary of a contraction piece, which complements similar results proved for more specific classes…
We introduce two parametrized families of piecewise affine maps on $[0,1]^2$ and $[0,1]^3$, as generalizations of the heterochaos baker maps which were introduced and investigated in [Y. Saiki, H. Takahasi, J. A. Yorke, Nonlinearity, 34 (2021), 5744--5761] as minimal models of the unstable dimension variability in multidimensional dynamical systems. We show that natural coding spaces of these maps coincide with the Dyck system that has come from the theory of languages. Based on this coincidence, we start to develop a complementary analysis on their invariant measures. As a first attempt, we s…
In connection with the Entropy Conjecture it is known that the topological entropy of a continuous graph map is bounded from below by the spectral radius of the induced map on the first homology group. We show that in the case of a piecewise monotone graph map, its topological entropy is equal precisely to the maximum of the mentioned spectral radius and the exponential growth rate of the number of periodic points of negative type. This nontrivially extends a result of Milnor and Thurston on piecewise monotone interval maps. For this purpose we generalize the concept of Milnor-Thurston zeta fu…
Let $I=[0,1)$, $b\in \{2,3,\ldots\}$ and $f:I\to I$ be an injective piecewise $\frac{1}{b}$-affine map, that is, assume that there exists a partition of $I$ into intervals $I_1,\ldots,I_n$ such that $\vert f(x)-f(y)\vert\le\frac1b \vert x-y\vert$ for all $x,y\in I_i$ and $1\le i\le n$. In this note, we study the $δ$-parameter family of maps $f_δ=R_δ\circ f$, where $R_δ:x\mapsto \{x+δ\}$. More precisely, we show that the set $\mathcal{N}$ of parameters $δ$ for which $f_δ$ has only natural codings with maximal complexity is a non-empty set with Hausdorff \mbox{dimension $0$}. We also show that f…
Since Bandt et al. have shown that the permutation entropy and the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy coincide for piecewise monotone interval maps, the relationship of both entropies for time-discrete dynamical systems is of a certain interest. The aim of this paper is a discussion of this relationship on the basis of an ordinal characterization of the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy recently given.
It is known that the topological entropy of a continuous interval map $f$ is positive if and only if the type of $f$ for Sharkovskii's order is $2^d p$ for some odd integer $p\ge 3$ and some $d\ge 0$; and in this case the topological entropy of $f$ is greater than or equal to $\frac{\logλ_p}{2^d}$, where $λ_p$ is the unique positive root of $X^p-2X^{p-2}-1$. For every odd $p\ge 3$, every $d\ge 0$ and every $λ\geλ_p$, we build a piecewise monotone continuous interval map that is of type $2^dp$ for Sharkovskii's order and whose topological entropy is $\frac{\logλ}{2^d}$. This shows that, for a g…
Any continuous, transitive, piecewise monotonic map is determined up to a binary choice by its dimension module with the associated finite sequence of generators. The dimension module by itself determines the topological entropy of any transitive piecewise monotonic map, and determines any transitive unimodal map up to conjugacy. For a transitive piecewise monotonic map which is not essentially injective, the associated dimension group is a direct sum of simple dimension groups, each with a unique state.
We give piecewise affine maps on the unit cube whose symbolic representation is the Dyck shift. This leads to a different way of verifying the chaotic nature of this system, including the computation of entropy.
Two-dimensional mappings obtained by coupling two piecewise increasing expanding maps are considered. Their dynamics is described when the coupling parameter increases in the expanding domain. By introducing a coding and by analysing an admissibility condition, approximations of the corresponding symbolic systems are obtained. These approximations imply that the topological entropy is located between two decreasing step functions of the coupling parameter. The analysis firstly applies to mappings with piecewise affine local maps which allow explicit expressions and, in a second step, is extend…
Recently, Buzzi showed in the compact case that the entropy map $f\rightarrow$ $h_{top}(f)$ is lower semi-continuous for all piecewise affine surface homeomorphisms. We prove that topological entropy for the Lozi maps can jump from zero to a value above 0.1203 as one crosses a particular parameter and hence it is not upper semi-continuous in general. Moreover, our results can be extended to a small neighborhood of this parameter showing the jump in the entropy occurs along a line segment in the parameter space.
We introduce and study a notion of algebraic entropy for self-maps of finite length of Noetherian local rings, and develop its properties. We show that it shares the standard properties of topological entropy. For finite self-maps we explore the connection between the degree of the map and its algebraic entropy, when the ring is a Cohen-Macaulay domain. As an application of algebraic entropy, we give a characteristic-free interpretation of the definition of Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity.
For $a\in [0,+\infty)$, the function space $E_{\geq a}$ ($E_{>a}$; $E_{\leq a}$; $E_{<a}$) of all continuous maps from $[0,1]$ to itself whose topological entropies are larger than or equal to $a$ (larger than $a$; smaller than or equal to $a$; smaller than $a$) with the supremum metric is investigated. It is shown that the spaces $E_{\geq a}$ and $E_{>a}$ are homeomorphic to the Hilbert space $l_2$ and the spaces $E_{\leq a}$ and $E_{<a}$ are contractible. Moreover, the subspaces of $E_{\leq a}$ and $E_{<a}$ consisting of all piecewise monotone maps are homotopy dense in them, respectively.
