We count points on character varieties associated with punctured surfaces and regular semisimple generic conjugacy classes in reductive groups. We find that the number of points are palindromic polynomials. This suggests a $P=W$ conjecture for these varieties. We also count points on the corresponding additive character varieties and find that the number of points are also polynomials, which we conjecture have non-negative coefficients. These polynomials can be considered as the reductive analogues of the Kac polynomials of comet-shaped quivers.
This is a continuation of our combinatorial program on the enumeration of Borel orbits in symmetric varieties of classical types. Here, we determine the generating series the numbers of Borel orbits in $\mathbf{SO}_{2n+1}/\mathbf{S(O}_{2p}\times \mathbf{O}_{2q+1}\mathbf{)}$ (type $BI$) and in $\mathbf{Sp}_n/\mathbf{Sp}_p\times \mathbf{Sp}_q$ (type $CII$). In addition, we explore relations to lattice path enumeration.
We prove an explicit formula for the Poincaré polynomials of parabolic character varieties of Riemann surfaces with semisimple local monodromies, which was conjectured by Hausel, Letellier and Rodriguez-Villegas. Using an approach of Mozgovoy and Schiffmann the problem is reduced to counting pairs of a parabolic vector bundles and a nilpotent endomorphism of prescribed generic type. The generating function counting these pairs is shown to be a product of Macdonald polynomials and the function counting pairs without parabolic structure. The modified Macdonald polynomial $\tilde H_λ[X;q,t]$ is i…
We count the number of isomorphism classes of degree $d$-twists of some polarized abelian varieties over finite fields of odd prime dimension. This can be seen as a higher dimensional analogue of the counting problem for elliptic curves case.
The goal of this note is to present a combinatorial mechanism for counting certain objects associated to a variety X defined over a finite field. The basic example is that of counting conjugacy classes in GL_n(F_q), where X is the multiplicative group.
Let $Z$ be a projective geometrically integral algebraic variety. This paper is concerned with estimating the number of rational points on $Z$ which have height at most $B$. The bounds obtained are uniform in varieties of fixed degree and fixed dimension, and are essentially best possible for varieties of degree at least six.
In this paper, we define two numbers. One comes from counting tropical curves with a stop and the other is the number of holomorphic discs in toric varieties with Lagrangian boundary condition. Both of these curves should satisfy some matching conditions. We show that these numbers coincide. These numbers can be considered as Gromov-Witten type invariants for holomorphic discs, and they have both similarities and differences to the counting numbers of closed holomorphic curves. We study several aspects of them.
Let $X$ be an algebraic variety over a finite field $\bF_q$, homogeneous under a linear algebraic group. We show that the number of rational points of $X$ over $\bF_{q^n}$ is a periodic polynomial function of $q^n$ with integer coefficients. Moreover, the shifted periodic polynomial function, where $q^n$ is formally replaced with $q^n + 1$, is shown to have non-negative coefficients.
In this paper, we prove a general result computing the number of rational points of bounded height on a projective variety $V$ which is covered by lines. The main technical result used to achieve this is an upper bound on the number of rational points of bounded height on a line. This upper bound is such that it can be easily controlled as the line varies, and hence is used to sum the counting functions of the lines which cover the original variety $V$.
We consider the problem of counting the number of varieties in a family over a number field which contain a rational point. In particular, for products of Brauer-Severi varieties and closely related counting functions associated to Brauer group elements. Using harmonic analysis on toric varieties, we provide a positive answer to a question of Serre on such counting functions in some cases. We also formulate some conjectures on generalisations of Serre's problem.
The present note is devoted to an amendment to a recent paper of Ellenberg, Lawrence and Venkatesh. Roughly speaking, the main result here states the subpolynomial growth of the number of integral points with bounded height of a variety over a number field whose fundamental group is large. Such an improvement, i.e. requiring large fundamental group as opposed to the existence of a geometric variation of pure Hodge structures, was already asked in op.cit..
We define new partition functions for theories with targets on toric singularities via products of old partition functions on crepant resolutions. We compute explicit examples and show that the new partition functions turn out to be homogeneous on MacMahon factors.
This paper announces results on the behavior of some important algebraic and topological invariants --- Euler characteristic, arithmetic genus, and their intersection homology analogues; the signature, etc. --- and their associated characteristic classes, under morphisms of projective algebraic varieties. The formulas obtained relate global invariants to singularities of general complex algebraic (or analytic) maps. These results, new even for complex manifolds, are applied to obtain a version of Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch, a calculation of Todd classes of toric varieties, and an explicit formu…
We develop a technique to study curves in a variety which has a degeneration into some union of varieties. The class of such varieties is very broad, but the theory becomes particularly useful when the variety has a degeneration into a union of toric varieties. Hypersurfaces are typical examples, and we study lines on K3 surfaces and quintic Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in detail. In particular, we combinatorially prove the existence of 2875 lines in a generic quintic Calabi-Yau 3-fold. Also, we give a geometric construction of walls in the Gross-Siebert construction of Calabi-Yau varieties.
We compute the motive of the variety of representations of the torus knot of type (m,n) into the affine groups $AGL_1$ and $AGL_2$ for an arbitrary field $k$. In the case that $k = F_q$ is a finite field this gives rise to the count of the number of points of the representation variety, while for $k = C$ this calculation returns the E-polynomial of the representation variety. We discuss the interplay between these two results in sight of Katz theorem that relates the point count polynomial with the E-polynomial. In particular, we shall show that several point count polynomials exist for these …
We present a deterministic polynomial time algorithm for computing the zeta function of an arbitrary variety of fixed dimension over a finite field of small characteristic. One consequence of this result is an efficient method for computing the order of the group of rational points on the Jacobian of a smooth geometrically connected projective curve over a finite field of small characteristic.
We prove a generating function formula for the Betti numbers of Nakajima quiver varieties. We prove that it is a q-deformation of the Weyl-Kac character formula. In particular this implies that the constant term of the polynomial counting the number of absolutely indecomposable representations of a quiver equals the multiplicity of a a certain weight in the corresponding Kac-Moody algebra, which was conjectured by Kac in 1982.
We show that the counting of rational curves on a complete toric variety that are in general position to the toric prime divisors coincides with the counting of certain tropical curves. The proof is algebraic-geometric and relies on degeneration techniques and log deformation theory. This generalizes results of Mikhalkin obtained by different methods in the surface case to arbitrary dimensions.
In this paper we prove that the counting polynomials of certain torus orbits in products of partial flag varieties coincides with the Kac polynomials of supernova quivers, which arise in the study of the moduli spaces of certain irregular meromorphic connections on trivial bundles over the projective line. We also prove that these polynomials can be expressed as a specialization of Tutte polynomials of certain graphs providing a combinatorial proof of the non-negativity of their coefficients.
Via counting over finite fields, we derive explicit formulas for the E-polynomials and Euler characteristics of GL(d)- and PGL(d)-character varieties of free groups. We prove a positivity property for these polynomials and relate them to the number of subgroups of finite index.
We obtain a formula for the degrees of the varieties parameterizing complex algebraic curves of any divisor class and genus on P^2_6, the projective plane blown-up at 6 generic points. Moreover, the formula computes the degrees of the varieties parameterizing curves on P^2_6 which additionally satisfy certain tangency conditions to a fixed exceptional divisor on P^2_6. Our formula contains as special cases the degrees of the analogous varieties parameterizing curves on P^2_q, for q=1,...,5, and on the quadric (P^1)^2. It is an extension of the Caporaso-Harris formula counting curves of any deg…
A conjecture of Batyrev and Manin relates arithmetic properties of varieties with ample anticanonical class to geometric invariants; in particular, counting functions defined by metrized ample line bundles and the corresponding asymptotics of rational points of bounded height are interpreted in terms of cones of effective divisors and certain thresholds with respect to these cones. This framework leads to the notion of balanced line bundles, whose counting functions, conjecturally, capture generic distributions of rational points. We investigate balanced line bundles in the context of the Mini…
We count points over a finite field on wild character varieties of Riemann surfaces for singularities with regular semisimple leading term. The new feature in our counting formulas is the appearance of characters of Yokonuma-Hecke algebras. Our result leads to the conjecture that the mixed Hodge polynomials of these character varieties agree with previously conjectured perverse Hodge polynomials of certain twisted parabolic Higgs moduli spaces, indicating the possibility of a P=W conjecture for a suitable wild Hitchin system.
Let $S$ be a Shimura variety and let $h$ be a Weil height function on $S$. We conjecture that the heights of special points in $S$ are discriminant negligible. Assuming this conjecture to be true, we prove that the sizes of the Galois orbits of special points grow as a fixed power of their discriminant (an invariant we will define in the text). In the case of Shimura varieties of abelian type, the height bound holds by the recently proved averaged Colmez formula, and our theorem gives a new proof of Tsimerman's Galois lower bound in this case. The main novelty is that our approach avoids the u…
We investigate the problem of counting tropical genus g curves in g-dimensional tropical abelian varieties. For g = 2, 3, we prove that the tropical count matches the count provided by Göttsche, Bryan-Leung, and Lange-Sernesi in the complex setting.
The zeta function of a motive over a finite field is multiplicative with respect to the direct sum of motives. It has beautiful analytic properties, as were predicted by the Weil conjectures. There is also a multiplicative zeta function, which instead respects the tensor product of motives. There is no analogue of the Weil conjectures, and we give a sufficient criterion for an analytic continuation to exist. This happens, for example, for cellular varieties, abelian varieties, or genus g > 1 curves with a supersingular Jacobian.
Quiver Grassmannians and quiver flags are natural generalisations of usual Grassmannians and flags. They arise in the study of quiver representations and Hall algebras. In general, they are projective varieties which are neither smooth nor irreducible. We use a scheme theoretic approach to calculate their tangent space and to obtain a dimension estimate similar to one of Reineke. Using this we can show that if there is a generic representation, then these varieties are smooth and irreducible. If we additionally have a counting polynomial we deduce that their Euler characteristic is positive an…
Inspired by a paper of Salberger we give a new proof of Manin's conjecture for toric varieties over imaginary quadratic number fields by means of universal torsor parameterizations and elementary lattice point counting.
We give a tropical description of the counting of real log curves in toric degenerations of toric varieties. We treat the case of genus zero curves and all non-superabundant higher-genus situations. The proof relies on log deformation theory and is a real version of the Nishinou-Siebert approach to the tropical correspondence theorem for complex curves. In dimension two, we use similar techniques to study the counting of real log curves with Welschinger signs and we obtain a new proof of Mikhalkin's tropical correspondence theorem for Welschinger invariants.
We give an expository discussion of recent work using Berglund-Huebsch-Krawitz mirror symmetry to describe the structure of point counts on algebraic varieties over finite fields.
This article reports on an approach to point counting on algebraic varieties over finite fields that is based on a detailed investigation of the $2$-adic orthogonal group. Combining the new approach with a $p$-adic method, we count the number of points on some $K3$ surfaces over the field $\bbF_{\!p}$, for all primes $p < 10^8$.
Conjectural results for cohomological invariants of wild character varieties are obtained by counting curves in degenerate Calabi-Yau threefolds. A conjectural formula for E-polynomials is derived from the Gromov-Witten theory of local Calabi-Yau threefolds with normal crossing singularities. A refinement is also conjectured, generalizing existing results of Hausel, Mereb and Wong as well as recent joint work of Donagi, Pantev and the author for weighted Poincaré polynomials of wild character varieties.
We study geometric and combinatorial properties of the degenerate flag varieties of type A. These varieties are acted upon by the automorphism group of a certain representation of a type A quiver, containing a maximal torus T. Using the group action, we describe the moment graphs, encoding the zero- and one-dimensional T-orbits. We also study the smooth and singular loci of the degenerate flag varieties. We show that the Euler characteristic of the smooth locus is equal to the large Schröder number and the Poincaré polynomial is given by a natural statistics counting the number of diagonal ste…
We study algebraic algorithms for expressing the number of non-negative integer solutions to a unimodular system of linear equations as a function of the right hand side. Our methods include Todd classes of toric varieties via Gröbner bases, and rational generating functions as in Barvinok's algorithm. We report polyhedral and computational results for two special cases: counting contingency tables and Kostant's partition function.
We consider the class of quasiprojective varieties admitting a dominant morphism onto a curve with negative Euler characteristic. The existence of such a morphism is a property of the fundamental group. We show that for a variety in this class the number of maps onto a hyperbolic curve or surfaces can be estimated in terms of the numerical invariants of the fundamental group. We use this estimates to find the number of biholomorphic automorphisms of complements to some arrangements of lines.
Suppose $(X_n)$ is a sequence of positive-dimensional smooth projective complete intersections over $\mathbb{F}_q$ with dimensions bounded from above and with characteristic zero lifts $(\tilde{X}_n)$ to smooth projective geometrically connected varieties. Suppose each complex variety $\tilde{X}^{an}_n$ has (underlying real manifold equipped with) a Riemannian metric $g_n$ of sectional curvature at least $-κ_n^2$, $κ_n\geq 0$, and diameter at most $D_n$. In this note, we show that if \[\lim_{n\rightarrow\infty}\min\{d:X_n(\mathbb{F}_{q^d})\neq\emptyset\}=+\infty,\] then $κ_nD_n\rightarrow+\inf…
We extend the definition of $\mathcal{A}$-discriminant varieties, and Kapranov's parametrization of $\mathcal{A}$-discriminant varieties, to complex exponents. As an application, we study the special case where $\mathcal{A}$ is a fixed real $n\times (n+3)$ matrix whose columns form the spectrum of an $n$-variate exponential sum $g$ with fixed sign vector for its coefficients: We prove that the number of possible isotopy types for the real zero set of $g$ is $O(n^2)$. The best previous upper bound was $2^{O(n^4)}$. Along the way, we also show that the singular loci of our generalized $\mathcal{…
Let $U$ be an affine log Calabi-Yau variety containing an open algebraic torus. We show that the naive counts of rational curves in $U$ uniquely determine a commutative associative algebra equipped with a compatible multilinear form. This proves a variant of the Frobenius structure conjecture by Gross-Hacking-Keel in mirror symmetry, and the spectrum of this algebra is supposed to give the hypothetical mirror family. Although the statement of our theorem involves only elementary algebraic geometry, our proof employs Berkovich non-archimedean analytic methods. We construct the structure constan…
We relate the problem of counting number fields, in particular, Malle's conjecture with the problem of counting rational points on singular Fano varieties, in particular, Batyrev and Tschinkel's generalization of Manin's conjecture.
A conjecture of Manin predicts the distribution of rational points on Fano varieties. We provide a framework for proofs of Manin's conjecture for del Pezzo surfaces over imaginary quadratic fields, using universal torsors. Some of our tools are formulated over arbitrary number fields. As an application, we prove Manin's conjecture over imaginary quadratic fields K for the quartic del Pezzo surface S of singularity type A_3 with five lines given in P^4 by the equations vw - xy = vy + wy + xz = 0.
We give a version of geometric motivic integration that specializes to p-adic integration via point counting. This has been done before for stable sets; we extend this to more general sets. The main problem in doing this is that it requires to take limits, hence the measure will have to take values in a completion of the (localized) Grothendieck ring of varieties. The standard choice is to complete with respect to the dimension filtration; however, since the point counting homomorphism is not continuous with respect to this topology we have to use a stronger one. The first part of the paper is…
Let $k,p\in \mathbb{N}$ with $p$ prime and let $f\in\mathbb{Z}[x_1,x_2]$ be a bivariate polynomial with degree $d$ and all coefficients of absolute value at most $p^k$. Suppose also that $f$ is variable separated, i.e., $f=g_1+g_2$ for $g_i\in\mathbb{Z}[x_i]$. We give the first algorithm, with complexity sub-linear in $p$, to count the number of roots of $f$ over $\mathbb{Z}$ mod $p^k$ for arbitrary $k$: Our Las Vegas randomized algorithm works in time $(dk\log p)^{O(1)}\sqrt{p}$, and admits a quantum version for smooth curves working in time $(d\log p)^{O(1)}k$. Save for some subtleties conce…
We consider two families of algebraic varieties $Y_n$ indexed by natural numbers $n$: the configuration space of unordered $n$-tuples of distinct points on $\mathbb{C}$, and the space of unordered $n$-tuples of linearly independent lines in $\mathbb{C}^n$. Let $W_n$ be any sequence of virtual $S_n$-representations given by a character polynomial, we compute $H^i(Y_n; W_n)$ for all $i$ and all $n$ in terms of double generating functions. One consequence of the computation is a new recurrence phenomenon: the stable twisted Betti numbers $\lim_{n\to\infty}\dim H^i(Y_n; W_n)$ are linearly recurren…
A conjecture of Manin predicts the distribution of K-rational points on certain algebraic varieties defined over a number field K. In recent years, a method using universal torsors has been successfully applied to several hard special cases of Manin's conjecture over the field Q of rational numbers. Combining this method with techniques developed by Schanuel, we give a proof of Manin's conjecture over arbitrary number fields for the singular cubic surface S given by the equation w^3 = x y z.
