Classical hypergeometric functions are well-known to play an important role in arithmetic algebraic geometry. These functions offer solutions to ordinary differential equations, and special cases of such solutions are periods of Picard-Fuchs varieties of Calabi-Yau type. Gauss' $_2F_1$ includes the celebrated case of elliptic curves through the theory of elliptic functions. In the 80s, Greene defined finite field hypergeometric functions that can be used to enumerate the number of finite field points on such varieties. We extend some of these results to count finite field ``matrix points." For example, for every $n\geq 1,$ we consider the matrix elliptic curves $$ B^2 = A(A-I_n)(A-a I_n), $$ where $(A,B)$ are commuting $n\times n$ matrices over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ and $a\neq 0,1$ is fixed. Our formulas are assembled from Greene's hypergeometric functions and $q$-multinomial coefficients. We use these formulas to prove Sato-Tate distributions for the error terms for matrix point counts for these curves and some families of $K3$ surfaces.
We count the number of isomorphism classes of degree $d$-twists of some polarized abelian varieties over finite fields of odd prime dimension. This can be seen as a higher dimensional analogue of the counting problem for elliptic curves case.
The goal of this note is to present a combinatorial mechanism for counting certain objects associated to a variety X defined over a finite field. The basic example is that of counting conjugacy classes in GL_n(F_q), where X is the multiplicative group.
Let $Z$ be a projective geometrically integral algebraic variety. This paper is concerned with estimating the number of rational points on $Z$ which have height at most $B$. The bounds obtained are uniform in varieties of fixed degree and fixed dimension, and are essentially best possible for varieties of degree at least six.
In this paper, we prove a general result computing the number of rational points of bounded height on a projective variety $V$ which is covered by lines. The main technical result used to achieve this is an upper bound on the number of rational points of bounded height on a line. This upper bound is such that it can be easily controlled as the line varies, and hence is used to sum the counting functions of the lines which cover the original variety $V$.
We consider the problem of counting the number of varieties in a family over a number field which contain a rational point. In particular, for products of Brauer-Severi varieties and closely related counting functions associated to Brauer group elements. Using harmonic analysis on toric varieties, we provide a positive answer to a question of Serre on such counting functions in some cases. We also formulate some conjectures on generalisations of Serre's problem.
The present note is devoted to an amendment to a recent paper of Ellenberg, Lawrence and Venkatesh. Roughly speaking, the main result here states the subpolynomial growth of the number of integral points with bounded height of a variety over a number field whose fundamental group is large. Such an improvement, i.e. requiring large fundamental group as opposed to the existence of a geometric variation of pure Hodge structures, was already asked in op.cit..
We present a deterministic polynomial time algorithm for computing the zeta function of an arbitrary variety of fixed dimension over a finite field of small characteristic. One consequence of this result is an efficient method for computing the order of the group of rational points on the Jacobian of a smooth geometrically connected projective curve over a finite field of small characteristic.
Igusa varieties are algebraic varieties that arise in the study of special fibers of Shimura varieties, and have demonstrated many applications in the Langlands program via a Langlands-Kottwitz style point-counting formula due to Shin in the case of PEL type. In this paper we formulate and prove an analogue of the Langlands-Rapoport conjecture for Igusa varieties of Hodge type, building off the work of Kisin in the case of Shimura varieties. We then use this description of the points to derive a point-counting formula for Igusa varieties of Hodge type, generalizing the fomula in PEL type of Sh…
Let $S$ be a Shimura variety and let $h$ be a Weil height function on $S$. We conjecture that the heights of special points in $S$ are discriminant negligible. Assuming this conjecture to be true, we prove that the sizes of the Galois orbits of special points grow as a fixed power of their discriminant (an invariant we will define in the text). In the case of Shimura varieties of abelian type, the height bound holds by the recently proved averaged Colmez formula, and our theorem gives a new proof of Tsimerman's Galois lower bound in this case. The main novelty is that our approach avoids the u…
Inspired by a paper of Salberger we give a new proof of Manin's conjecture for toric varieties over imaginary quadratic number fields by means of universal torsor parameterizations and elementary lattice point counting.
This paper contains two parts toward studying abelian varieties from the classification point of view. In a series of papers, the current authors and T.-C. Yang obtain explicit formulas for the numbers of superspecial abelian surfaces over finite fields. In this paper, we give an explicit formula for the size of the isogeny class of simple abelian surfaces with real Weil number $\sqrt{q}$. This establishes a key step that one may extend our previous explicit calculations of superspecial abelian surfaces to those of supersingular abelian surfaces. The second part is to introduce the notion of ge…
We give an expository discussion of recent work using Berglund-Huebsch-Krawitz mirror symmetry to describe the structure of point counts on algebraic varieties over finite fields.
This article reports on an approach to point counting on algebraic varieties over finite fields that is based on a detailed investigation of the $2$-adic orthogonal group. Combining the new approach with a $p$-adic method, we count the number of points on some $K3$ surfaces over the field $\bbF_{\!p}$, for all primes $p < 10^8$.
Using Margulis's results on lattices in semisimple Lie groups, we prove the Grothendieck-Katz $p$-Curvature Conjecture for certain locally symmetric varieties, including the moduli space of abelian varieties ${\cal A}_g$ when $g > 1.$
In this paper, we study the distribution of integral points on parametric families of affine homogeneous varieties. By the work of Borel and Harish-Chandra, the set of integral points on each such variety consists of finitely many orbits of arithmetic groups, and we establish an asymptotic formula (on average) for the number of the orbits indexed by their Siegel weights. In particular, we deduce asymptotic formulas for the number of inequivalent integral representations by decomposable forms and by norm forms in division algebras, and for the weighted number of equivalence classes of integral …
We relate the problem of counting number fields, in particular, Malle's conjecture with the problem of counting rational points on singular Fano varieties, in particular, Batyrev and Tschinkel's generalization of Manin's conjecture.
We count flags of primitive lattices, which are objects of the form ${0}=Λ^{(0)}<Λ^{(1)}< \cdots <Λ^{(\ell)}= \mathbb{Z}^n$, where every $Λ^{(i)}$ is a primitive lattice in $\mathbb{Z}^n$. The counting is with respect to two different natural height functions, allowing us to give a new proof of the Manin conjecture for flag varieties over rational numbers. We deduce the equidistribution of rational points in flag varieties, as well as the equidistribution of the shapes of the successive quotient lattices, $Λ^{(i)}/Λ^{(i-1)}$. In doing so, we generalize previous work of Schmidt, as well as our …

We investigate the question of whether the existence of a family of local zero-cycles of degree $d$ orthogonal to the Brauer group implies the non-emptiness of the Brauer-Manin set for certain varieties. We provide various examples of Brauer-Manin obstruction to the existence of zero-cycles of appropriate degrees.
Let G be a semisimple group over rational numbers and H is a subgroup over rational numbers. Given a representation of G and an integral vector x whose stabilizer is equal to H. In this paper we investigate the asymptotic of integral points on Gx with bounded height. We find its asymptotic up to an implicit constant when H is large in G but we allow the presence of intermediate subgroups. This is achieved by a novel combination of two equidistribution results in two different settings: one is that of Eskin, Mozes and Shah on a Lie group modulo a lattice and the other one is a result of Chamber…
In a previous paper {GN2} an effective solution of the lattice point counting problem in general domains in semisimple S-algebraic groups and affine symmetric varieties was established. The method relies on the mean ergodic theorem for the action of G on G/Gamma, and implies uniformity in counting over families of lattice subgroups admitting a uniform spectral gap. In the present paper we extend some methods developed in {NS} and use them to establish several useful consequences of this property, including : Effective upper bounds on lifting for solutions of congruences in affine homogeneous v…
In two earlier articles, we proved that, if the Hodge conjecture is true for ALL CM abelian varieties over the complex numbers, then both the Tate conjecture and the standard conjectures are true for abelian varieties over finite fields. Here we rework the proofs so that they apply to a single abelian variety. As a consequence, we prove (unconditionally) that the Tate and standard conjectures are true for many abelian varieties over finite fields, including abelian varieties for which the algebra of Tate classes is not generated by divisor classes.
A conjecture of Manin predicts the distribution of rational points on Fano varieties. We provide a framework for proofs of Manin's conjecture for del Pezzo surfaces over imaginary quadratic fields, using universal torsors. Some of our tools are formulated over arbitrary number fields. As an application, we prove Manin's conjecture over imaginary quadratic fields K for the quartic del Pezzo surface S of singularity type A_3 with five lines given in P^4 by the equations vw - xy = vy + wy + xz = 0.
Tate's theorem (Invent. Math. 1966)implies that the Tate conjecture holds for any abelian variety over a finite field whose Q_l-algebra of Tate classes is generated by those of degree 1. We construct families of abelian varieties over finite fields for which this condition fails, but for which we are nevertheless able to prove the Tate conjecture.
Suppose $(X_n)$ is a sequence of positive-dimensional smooth projective complete intersections over $\mathbb{F}_q$ with dimensions bounded from above and with characteristic zero lifts $(\tilde{X}_n)$ to smooth projective geometrically connected varieties. Suppose each complex variety $\tilde{X}^{an}_n$ has (underlying real manifold equipped with) a Riemannian metric $g_n$ of sectional curvature at least $-κ_n^2$, $κ_n\geq 0$, and diameter at most $D_n$. In this note, we show that if \[\lim_{n\rightarrow\infty}\min\{d:X_n(\mathbb{F}_{q^d})\neq\emptyset\}=+\infty,\] then $κ_nD_n\rightarrow+\inf…
We study the Brauer-Manin obstruction to the existence of zero-cycles of degree $d$ on certain classes of varieties over number fields. We generalise existing results in the literature and prove some results about fibrations over the projective line, where the geometric Brauer group of the generic fibre is not assumed to be finite. The idea is to assume that the Brauer-Manin obstruction to the Hasse principle is the only one for certain fibres and then deduce analogous results for zero-cycles.
We study $p$-adic integral models of certain PEL Shimura varieties with level subgroup at $p$ related to the $Γ_1(p)$-level subgroup in the case of modular curves. We will consider two cases: the case of Shimura varieties associated with unitary groups that split over an unramified extension of $\mathbb{Q}_p$ and the case of Siegel modular varieties. We construct local models, i.e. simpler schemes which are étale locally isomorphic to the integral models. Our integral models are defined by a moduli scheme using the notion of an Oort-Tate generator of a group scheme. We use these local models t…
A conjecture of Manin predicts the distribution of K-rational points on certain algebraic varieties defined over a number field K. In recent years, a method using universal torsors has been successfully applied to several hard special cases of Manin's conjecture over the field Q of rational numbers. Combining this method with techniques developed by Schanuel, we give a proof of Manin's conjecture over arbitrary number fields for the singular cubic surface S given by the equation w^3 = x y z.
Göttsche and Soergel gave formulas for the Hodge numbers of Hilbert schemes of points on a smooth algebraic surface and the Hodge numbers of generalized Kummer varieties. When a smooth projective surface $S$ admits an action by a finite group $G$, we describe the action of $G$ on the Hodge pieces via point counting. Each element of $G$ gives a trace on $\sum_{n=0}^{\infty}\sum_{i=0}^{\infty}(-1)^{i}H^{i}(S^{[n]},\mathbb{C})q^{n}$. In the case that $S$ is a K3 surface or an abelian surface, the resulting generating functions give some interesting modular forms when $G$ acts faithfully and sympl…
For several Hodge-type Shimura varieties of good reduction in characteristic $p$, we show that the cone of weights of automorphic forms is encoded by the stack of $G$-zips of Pink-Wedhorn-Ziegler. This establishes several instances of a general conjecture formulated in previous papers by the authors. Furthermore, we prove in these cases that any mod $p$ automorphic form whose weight lies in a specific region of the weight space is divisible by a partial Hasse invariant. This generalizes to other Shimura varieties previous results of Diamond--Kassaei on Hilbert modular forms.
A sieve for rational points on suitable varieties is developed, together with applications to counting rational points in thin sets, the number of varieties in a family which are everywhere locally soluble, and to the notion of friable rational points with respect to divisors. In the special case of quadrics, sharper estimates are obtained by developing a version of the Selberg sieve for rational points.
We prove the generic exclusion of certain Shimura varieties of unitary and orthogonal types from the Torelli locus. The proof relies on a slope inequality on surface fibration due to G. Xiao, and the main result implies that certain Shimura varieties only meet the Torelli locus in dimension zero.
A method is described to sum multi-dimensional arithmetic functions subject to hyperbolic summation conditions, provided that asymptotic formulae in rectangular boxes are available. In combination with the circle method, the new method is a versatile tool to count rational points on algebraic varieties defined by multi-homogeneous diagonal equations.
The goal of this paper is to calculate the trace of the composition of a Hecke correspondence and a (high enough) power of the Frobenius at a good place on the intersection cohomology of the Satake-Baily-Borel compactification of certain Shimura varieties, to stabilize the result for Shimura varieties associated to unitary groups over $\mathbb{Q}$ and to give applications of this calculations using base change from these unitary groups to $GL_n$. ----- Le but de ce texte est de calculer la trace d'une correspondance de Hecke composee avec une puissance (assez grande) du Frobenius en une bonne …
We prove an estimate on the number of rational points on the Grassmannian variety of bounded twisted height, refining the classical results of Schmidt ([12]) and Thunder ([20]) over the rational field: most importantly, our formula counts all points. Among the consequences are a couple of new implications on the classical subject of counting rational points on flag varieties.
In this paper, we consider Abelian varieties over function fields that arise as twists of Abelian varieties by cyclic covers of irreducible quasi-projective varieties. Then, in terms of Prym varieties associated to the cyclic covers, we prove a structure theorem on their Mordell-Weil group. Our results give an explicit method for construction of elliptic curves, hyper- and super-elliptic Jacobians that have large ranks over function fields of certain varieties.
Let $k,p\in \mathbb{N}$ with $p$ prime and let $f\in\mathbb{Z}[x_1,x_2]$ be a bivariate polynomial with degree $d$ and all coefficients of absolute value at most $p^k$. Suppose also that $f$ is variable separated, i.e., $f=g_1+g_2$ for $g_i\in\mathbb{Z}[x_i]$. We give the first algorithm, with complexity sub-linear in $p$, to count the number of roots of $f$ over $\mathbb{Z}$ mod $p^k$ for arbitrary $k$: Our Las Vegas randomized algorithm works in time $(dk\log p)^{O(1)}\sqrt{p}$, and admits a quantum version for smooth curves working in time $(d\log p)^{O(1)}k$. Save for some subtleties conce…
In this short note we present an elementary proof of the Ax-Lindemann-Weierstrass theorem for abelian and semi-abelian varieties. The proof uses ideas of Pila, Ullmo, Yafaev, Zannier and is based on basic properties of sets definable in o-minimal structures. It does not use the Pila-Wilkie counting theorem.
Let K be a global field of characteristic not 2. Let Z be a symmetric variety defined over K and S a finite set of places of K. We obtain counting and equidistribution results for the S-integral points of Z. Our results are effective when K is a number field.
In this paper, we study a conjecture of Rasmussen and Tamagawa, on the finiteness of the set of isomorphism classes of abelian varieties with constrained prime power torsion. Our result is related with abelian varieties which have complex multiplication over their fields of definition.
We study the local factor at p of the semi-simple zeta function of a Shimura variety of Drinfeld type for a level structure given at p by the pro-unipotent radical of an Iwahori subgroup. Our method is an adaptation to this case of the Langlands-Kottwitz counting method. We use Hecke algebra isomorphisms to determine the test functions at p.
