We develop a technique to study curves in a variety which has a degeneration into some union of varieties. The class of such varieties is very broad, but the theory becomes particularly useful when the variety has a degeneration into a union of toric varieties. Hypersurfaces are typical examples, and we study lines on K3 surfaces and quintic Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in detail. In particular, we combinatorially prove the existence of 2875 lines in a generic quintic Calabi-Yau 3-fold. Also, we give a geometric construction of walls in the Gross-Siebert construction of Calabi-Yau varieties.
In this paper, we give a tropical method for computing Gromov-Witten type invariants of Fano manifolds of special type. This method applies to those Fano manifolds which admit toric degenerations to toric Fano varieties with singularities allowing small resolutions. Examples include (generalized) flag manifolds of type A, and some moduli space of rank two bundles on a genus two curve.
We show that the counting of rational curves on a complete toric variety that are in general position to the toric prime divisors coincides with the counting of certain tropical curves. The proof is algebraic-geometric and relies on degeneration techniques and log deformation theory. This generalizes results of Mikhalkin obtained by different methods in the surface case to arbitrary dimensions.
Let M be a symplectic manifold equipped with a Hamiltonian circle action and let L be an invariant Lagrangian submanifold of M. We study the problem of counting holomorphic disc sections of the trivial M-bundle over a disc with boundary in L through degeneration. We obtain a conjectural relationship between the potential function of L and the Seidel element associated to the circle action. When applied to a Lagrangian torus fibre of a semi-positive toric manifold, this degeneration argument reproduces a conjecture (now a theorem) of Chan-Lau-Leung-Tseng relating certain correction terms appear…
Let C_1 and C_2 be two degenerations of genus g curves. We prove that if two degenerations defines the same conjugacy classes in the mapping class group, they are equivalent under analytic deformations.
In this note, we give an overview of a new technique for studying Brill--Noether curves in projective space via degeneration. In particular, we give a roadmap to the proof of the Maximal Rank Conjecture.
The main result of this article is that the component of the Alexeev-Kollár-Shepherd-Barron moduli space of stable surfaces parameterizing stable degenerations of symmetric squares of curves is isomorphic to the moduli space of stable curves. The moduli space of stable curves is used to ensure that any degeneration can be replaced by a degeneration to the symmetric square of a stable curve. These degenerations are not stable, however, but are partially resolved by the relative Hilbert scheme of length two subschemes in the fibers of a family of stable curves. The article gives a geometric desc…
We constructed a projective moduli space of semistable torsion free sheaves with `fixed determinant' on a reducible curve. When a family of smooth curves degenerates to the reducible curve, our moduli space is a degeneration of the moduli spaces of semistable vector bundles with a fixed determinant on the smooth curves. Moreover, the moduli space is reduced and seminormal.
In this article, we will give the Deligne 1-motives up to isogeny corresponding to the $\mathbb{Q}$-limiting mixed Hodge structures of semi-stable degenerations of curves, by using logarithmic structures and Steenbrink's cohomological mixed Hodge complexes associated to semi-stable degenerations of curves.
In this paper we give a survey about the classification of vector bundles and torsion free sheaves on degenerations of elliptic curves. Coherent sheaves on singular curves of arithmetic genus one can be studied using the technique of matrix problems or via Fourier-Mukai transforms, both methods are discussed here. Moreover, we include new proofs of some classical results about vector bundles on elliptic curves.
We observe that if we are interested primarily in degeneration arguments, there is a weaker notion of (semi)stability for vector bundles on reducible curves, which is sufficient for many applications, and does not depend on a choice of polarization. We introduce and explore the basic properties of this alternate notion of (semi)stability. In a complementary direction, we record a proof of the existence of semistable extensions of vector bundles in suitable degenerations.
We study rational curves on general Fano hypersurfaces in projective space, mostly by degenerating the hypersurface along with its ambient projective space to reducible varieties. We prove results on existence of low-degree rational curves with balanced normal bundle, and reprove some results on irreducibility of spaces of rational curves of low degree.
In this paper we mainly describe $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein smoothings of projective surfaces with only Wahl singularities which have birational fibers. For instance, these degenerations appear in normal degenerations of the projective plane, and in boundary divisors of the KSBA compactification of the moduli space of surfaces of general type [KSB88]. We give an explicit description of them as smooth deformations plus 3-fold birational operations, through the flips and divisorial contractions in [HTU13]. We interpret the continuous part (smooth deformations) as degenerations of certain curves in …
Globally irreducible nodes (i.e. nodes whose branches belong to the same irreducible component) have mild effects on the most common topological invariants of an algebraic curve. In other words, adding a globally irreducible node (simple nodal degeneration) to a curve should not change them a lot. In this paper we study the effect of nodal degeneration of curves on fundamental groups and show examples where simple nodal degenerations produce non-isomorphic fundamental groups and this can be detected in an algebraic way by means of Galois coverings.
In this note, we revisit the modified diagonal cycle of Gross and Schoen. We look at degenerations of this cycle, induced by a degeneration of the curve C, and explain how the specialization map with respect to the central fiber produces a higher Chow cycle. When C is non-hyperelliptic of genus three, and degenerates to a nodal curve, the degeneration of the cycle corresponds to an indecomposable higher Chow cycle on a curve of genus two.
We use the moduli space of stable curves to determine the stable (in the sense of Kollár-Shepherd-Barron) degenerations of surfaces isogenous to a product of stable curves. A recent family of examples of Catanese show that the moduli space of such smooth surfaces may have two components. The main result of this note is that these components do not meet in the stable compactification. To the best of my knowledge this gives the first example of a moduli space of stable surfaces with multiple connected components parameterizing diffeomorphic smooth surfaces. Comments are appreciated.
In a series of papers, Aluffi and Faber computed the degree of the $GL_3$ orbit closure of an arbitrary plane curve. We attempt to generalize this to the equivariant setting by studying how orbits degenerate under some natural specializations, yielding a fairly complete picture in the case of plane quartics.
We consider certain degenerations of trigonal curves and hyperelliptic curves, which we call one step degeneration. We compute the limits of corresponding quasi-periodic solutions using the Sato Grassmannian. The mixing of solitons and quasi-periodic solutions is clearly visible in the obtained solutions.
We construct a degeneration of the moduli space of Hitchin pairs on smooth projective curves when the curve degenerates to an irreducible curve with a single node. The degeneration constructed here is analogous to the models constructed by Gieseker and Nagaraj-Seshadri for the case of the usual moduli spaces (i.e when the Higgs structure is trivial). There is an canonical relative Hitchin map which is shown to be proper and the general fibre of the relative Hitchin map provides a new compactification of the Picard variety of smooth curves with normal crossing singularities.
We consider the problem of bounding the dimension of the linear system of curves in ${\bf P}^2$ of degree $d$ with prescribed multiplicities $m_1,...,m_n$ at $n$ general points (\cite{Hir1},\cite{Hir2}). We propose a new method, based on the work of Ciliberto and Miranda (\cite {CM1}, \cite {CM2}), by specializing the general points to an elliptic curve in ${\bf P}^2$.
This paper studies curves on quartic K3 surfaces, or more generally K3 surfaces which are complete intersection in weighted projective spaces. A folklore conjecture concerning rational curves on K3 surfaces states that all K3 surfaces contain infinite number of irreducible rational curves. It is known that all K3 surfaces, except those contained in the countable union of hypersurfaces in the moduli space of K3 surfaces satisfy this property. In this paper we present a new approach for constructing curves on varieties which admit nice degenerations. We apply this technique to the above problem …
In this paper we answer two long-standing questions in the classification of $G$-torsors on curves for an almost simple, simply connected algebraic group $G$ over the field of complex numbers. The first question is to give an intrinsic definition of (semi)stability for a $G$-torsor on an {\em irreducible nodal curve} and the second one is the construction of a flat degeneration of the moduli space of semistable $G$-torsors when the smooth curve degenerates to an irreducible nodal curve. A generalization of the classical Bruhat-Tits group schemes to two-dimensional regular local rings and an ap…
Over a family $\mathbb X$ of genus $g$ complete curves, which gives the degeneration of a smooth curve into one with nodal singularities, we build a moduli space which is the moduli space of ${\rm SL}(n, \mathbb C)$ bundles over the generic smooth curve $X_t$ in the family, and is a moduli space of bundles equipped with extra structure at the nodes for the nodal curves in the family. This moduli space is a quotient by $(\mathbb C^*)^s$ of a moduli space on the desingularisation. Taking a "maximal" degeneration of the curve into a nodal curve built from the glueing of three-pointed spheres, we …
In this note, we show that for surfaces admitting suitable fibrations, any given degeneration X / Delta is bimeromorphic to a fiber space over Delta and we apply this result to the study of the degenerate fiber.
In this paper we introduce the notion of a geometric associative r-matrix attached to a genus one fibration with a section and irreducible fibres. It allows us to study degenerations of solutions of the classical Yang-Baxter equation using the approach of Polishchuk. We also calculate certain solutions of the classical, quantum and associative Yang-Baxter equations obtained from moduli spaces of (semi-)stable vector bundles on Weierstrass cubic curves.
The moduli space of (1,7)-polarized abelian surfaces with a level structure was shown by Manolache and Schreyer to be rational with compactification a Fano 3-fold of genus 12 which is also a compactification of the variety of powersum presentations of the Klein quartic curve. In this paper the possible degenerations of the abelian surfaces are classified in terms of degenerations of powersum presentations. In particular, the surface degenerations into fourteen planes are recovered. These were independently discovered by Alfio Marini using degenerations of twisted cubic curves.
We show that a particular subfunctor of the relative logarithmic Picard functor for families of aligned, log semistable curves over a regular base scheme and smooth over an open dense subscheme of the base is representable by a smooth algebraic space which is slightly more separated than the classical relative Picard functor. We show the existence of its maximal separated quotient and give a new functorial interpretation in terms of logarithmic geometry for the Néron model of the relative Picard functor of the smooth locus when we restrict to transversal pull backs from spectra of discrete val…
An action of a finite group on a smooth projective curve over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic is called restrained, if all second ramification groups are trivial (e.g., every group action on an ordinary curve is restrained). When the ramification indices satisfy certain numerical criteria, we construct a degenerating equivariant quasi-projective family to which the given curve belongs, and which in a sense is the unique building block for all such restrained equivariant families that ramify above a fixed set of points. The result is used to inductively study automorphi…
In this paper we consider a reducible degeneration of a hyperelliptic curve of genus $g$. Using the Sato Grassmannian we show that the limits of hyperelliptic solutions of the KP-hierarchy exist and become soliton solutions of various types. We recover some results of Abenda who studied regular soliton solutions corresponding to a reducible rational curve obtained as a degeneration of a hyperelliptic curve. We study singular soliton solutions as well and clarify how the singularity structure of solutions is reflected in the matrices which determine soliton solutions.
In 1957 Atiyah classified simple and indecomposable vector bundles on an elliptic curve. In this article we generalize his classification by describing the simple vector bundles on all reduced plane cubic curves. Our main result states that a simple vector bundle on such a curve is completely determined by its rank, multidegree and determinant. Our approach, based on the representation theory of boxes, also yields an explicit description of the corresponding universal families of simple vector bundles.
We give more or less explicit equations for all two-dimensional cusp singularities of embedding dimension at least 4. They are closely related to Felix Klein's equations for universal curves with level n structure. The main technical result is a description of the versal deformation of an n-gon in $P^{n-1}$. The final section contains the equations for smoothings of simple elliptic singularities (of multiplicity at most 9).
For a semi simple group G it is known the moduli stack of principal G-bundles over a fixed nodal curve is not complete. Finding a completion requires compactifying the group G. However it was shown in [34] that this is not sufficient to complete the moduli stack over a family of curves. In this paper I describe how to use an embedding of the loop group LG to provide a completion of the stack of G-bundles over a one dimensional family of curves degenerating to a nodal curve. The completion comes with a modular interpretation inspired by the work of Gieseker, Seshadri, Kausz and Thaddeus and Mar…
We study the stationary descendant Gromov-Witten theory of toric surfaces by combining and extending a range of techniques - tropical curves, floor diagrams, and Fock spaces. A correspondence theorem is established between tropical curves and descendant invariants on toric surfaces using maximal toric degenerations. An intermediate degeneration is then shown to give rise to floor diagrams, giving a geometric interpretation of this well-known bookkeeping tool in tropical geometry. In the process, we extend floor diagram techniques to include descendants in arbitrary genus. These floor diagrams …
Conjectural results for cohomological invariants of wild character varieties are obtained by counting curves in degenerate Calabi-Yau threefolds. A conjectural formula for E-polynomials is derived from the Gromov-Witten theory of local Calabi-Yau threefolds with normal crossing singularities. A refinement is also conjectured, generalizing existing results of Hausel, Mereb and Wong as well as recent joint work of Donagi, Pantev and the author for weighted Poincaré polynomials of wild character varieties.
Let f be a polynomial of degree n in ZZ[x_1,..,x_n], typically reducible but squarefree. From the hypersurface {f=0} one may construct a number of other subschemes {Y} by extracting prime components, taking intersections, taking unions, and iterating this procedure. We prove that if the number of solutions to f=0 in \FF_p^n is not a multiple of p, then all these intersections in Å^n_{\FF_p} just described are reduced. (If this holds for infinitely many p, then it holds over \QQ as well.) More specifically, there is a_Frobenius splitting_ on Å^n_{\FF_p} compatibly splitting all these subschemes…
This paper aims at settling the issue of the validity of the de Jonquières formulas. We consider the space of divisors with prescribed multiplicity, or de Jonquières divisors, contained in a linear series on a smooth projective curve. Assuming zero expected dimension of this space, the de Jonquières formulas compute the virtual number of de Jonquières divisors. Using degenerations to nodal curves we show that for a general curve equipped with a general complete linear series, the space is of expected dimension, which shows that the counts are in fact true. This implies that in the case of nega…
It is known that soliton solutions of the KP-hierarchy corresponds to singular rational curves with only ordinary double points. In this paper we study the degeneration of theta function solutions corresponding to certain trigonal curves. We show that, when the curves degenerate to singular rational curves with only ordinary triple points, the solutions tend to some intermediate solutions between solitons and rational solutions. They are considered as cerain limits of solitons. The Sato Grassmannian is extensively used here to study the degeneration of solutions, since it directly connects sol…
We prove the Zilber--Pink conjecture for curves in $Y(1)^n$ whose Zariski closure in $(\mathbb{P}^1)^n$ passes through the point $(\infty, \ldots, \infty)$, going beyond the asymmetry condition of Habegger and Pila. Our proof is based on a height bound following André's G-functions method. The principal novelty is that we exploit relations between evaluations of G-functions at unboundedly many non-archimedean places.

Given a generically smooth stable curve over a discrete valuation ring such that its special fibre is irreducible with one double point, we construct a moduli stack over that descrete valuation ring which is a model for the moduli stack of vector bundles over the generic fibre of the curve. The model has the following nice properties: 1. It is regular. 2. Its special fibre is a normal crossing divisor. 3. The normalization of its special fibre is a locally trivial KGl-bundle over the moduli stack of vector bundles over the normalization of the special fibre of the curve. Here KGl is a canonica…
We investigate Borel ideals on the Hilbert scheme components of arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay (ACM) codimension two schemes in P^n. We give a basic necessary criterion for a Borel ideal to be on such a component. Then considering ACM curves in P^3 on a quadric we compute in several examples all the Borel ideals on their Hilbert scheme component. Based on this we conjecture which Borel ideals are on such a component, and for a range of Borel ideals we prove that they are on the component.
We address the following question: Given a polarized toric surface (S,L), and a general integral curve C of geometric genus g in the linear system |L|, do there exist degenerations of C in |L| to general integral curves of smaller geometric genera? We give an affirmative answer to this question for surfaces associated to h-transverse polygons, provided that the characteristic of the ground field is large enough. We give examples of surfaces in small characteristic, for which the answer to the question is negative. In case the answer is affirmative, we deduce that a general curve C as above is …
We study the "generic" degenerations of curves with two singular points when the points merge. First, the notion of generic degeneration is defined precisely. Then a method to classify the possible results of generic degenerations is proposed in the case of linear singularity types. We discuss possible bounds on the singularity invariants of the resulting type in terms of the initial types. In particular the strict upper bound on the resulting multiplicity is proved and a sufficient condition for $δ=const$ collision is given.
We consider, under suitable assumptions, the following situation: $\mathcal B$ is a component of the moduli space of polarized surfaces and $\mathcal V_{m,δ}$ is the universal Severi variety over $\mathcal B$ parametrizing pairs $(S,C)$, with $(S,H)\in \mathcal B$ and $C\in |mH|$ irreducible with exactly $δ$ nodes as singularities. The moduli map $\mathcal V\to \mathcal M_g$ of an irreducible component $\mathcal V$ of $\mathcal V_{m,δ}$ is generically of maximal rank if and only if certain cohomology vanishings hold. Assuming there are suitable semistable degenerations of the surfaces in $\mat…
We study linear series on a general curve of genus g, whose images are exceptional with respect to their secant planes. Each such exceptional secant plane is algebraically encoded by an included linear series, whose number of base points computes the incidence degree of the corresponding secant plane. With enumerative applications in mind, we construct a moduli scheme of inclusions of limit linear series with base points over families of nodal curves of compact type, which we then use to compute combinatorial formulas for the number of secant-exceptional linear series when the spaces of linear…
Mumford and Newstead generalized the classical Torelli theorem to higher rank i.e., a smooth, projective curve $X$ is uniquely determined by the second intermediate Jacobian of the moduli space of stable rank $2$ bundles on $X$, with fixed odd degree determinant. In this article we prove the analogous result in the case $X$ is an irreducible nodal curve with one node. As a byproduct, we obtain the degeneration of the second intermediate Jacobians and the associated Néron model of a family of such moduli spaces.
In this paper, we define two numbers. One comes from counting tropical curves with a stop and the other is the number of holomorphic discs in toric varieties with Lagrangian boundary condition. Both of these curves should satisfy some matching conditions. We show that these numbers coincide. These numbers can be considered as Gromov-Witten type invariants for holomorphic discs, and they have both similarities and differences to the counting numbers of closed holomorphic curves. We study several aspects of them.
We will use toric degenerations of the projective plane ${\mathbb{P}^ 2}$ to give a new proof of the triple points interpolation problems in the projective plane. We also give a complete list of toric surfaces that are useful as components in this degeneration.
A degeneration of a singular curve on a toric surface, called a tropicalization, was constructed by E. Shustin. He classified the degeneration of 1-cuspidal curves using polyhedral complexes called tropical curves. In this paper, we define a tropical version of a 1-tacnodal curve, that is, a curve having exactly one singular point whose topological type is $A_3$, and by applying the tropicalization method, we classify tropical curves which correspond to 1-tacnodal curves.
We obtain a recursive formula answering the following question: How many irreducible, plane curves of degree d and (geometric) genus g pass through 3d-1+g general points in the plane? The formula is proved by studying suitable degenerations of plane curves.
In two very detailed, technical, and fundamental works, Jun Li constructed a theory of Gromov-Witten invariants for a singular scheme of the gluing form $Y_1\cup_D Y_2$ that arises from a degeneration $W/{\Bbb A}^1$ and a theory of relative Gromov-Witten invariants for a codimension-1 relative pair $(Y,D)$. As a summit, he derived a degeneration formula that relates a finite summation of the usual Gromov-Witten invariants of a general smooth fiber $W_t$ of $W/{\Bbb A}^1$ to the Gromov-Witten invariants of the singular fiber $W_0=Y_1\cup_D Y_2$ via gluing the relative pairs $(Y_1,D)$ and $(Y_2,…
We show that some of centeral fibers of degenerations of hyperelliptic curves are realized as those trigonal curves. In particular, any hyperelliptic curve can be the central fiber of a degeneration of trigonal curves.
Hirzebruch surfaces provide an excellent example to underline the fact that in general symplectic manifolds, Gromov-Witten invariants might well count curves in the boundary components of the moduli space. We use this example to explain in detail that the counting argument given by Batyrev in "Quantum cohomology rings of toric manifolds" (Asterisque 218:9-34, 1993) does not work.
We introduce a notion of tangential Alexander polynomials for plane curves and study the relation with $θ$^Alexander polynomial. As an application, we use these polynomials to study a non-reduced degeneration $C_t \to D_0+jL$. We show that there exists a certain surjectivity of the fundamental groups and divisibility among their Alexander polynomials.
