We perform folding on the ADHM construction of the instanton moduli space from $SU$ to $SO$ group. A Young diagram description for the $SO$ instanton is obtained after modifying the real and complex moment maps of the ADHM data. We study the Bethe gauge correspondence between type D relativistic Toda lattice and 5d $\mathcal{N}=1$ folded theory. In particular we prove that the regular monodromy defect in the folded gauge theory is the stationary wavefunction of the type D relativistic Toda lattice.
In this talk some classical and quantum aspects concerning a special kind of integrable defect - called a jump-defect - will be reviewed. In particular, recent results obtained in an attempt to incorporate this defect in the affine Toda field theories, in addition to the sine-Gordon model, will be presented.
A simple, basic, argument is given, based solely on energy-momentum considerations to recover conditions under which a_r affine or conformal Toda field theories can support defects of integrable type. Associated triangle relations are solved to provide expressions for transmission matrices that generalize previously known examples calculated for the sine-Gordon model and the a_2 affine Toda model.
We study quantum integrability of affine Toda theories with a line of defect. In particular, we focus on the problem of constructing quantum higher-spin conserved currents in models defined by two A_r^{(1)} Toda theories separated by a non-trivial type-I defect. For a suitable choice of the defect potential these theories are known to be classically integrable, that is they possess an infinite set of higher-spin conserved charges in involution. Studying the corresponding conservation laws at quantum level we discover that anomalies arise, which we compute exactly at all orders in the coupling …
We demonstrate that the generalization of the relativistic Toda chain (RTC) is a special reduction of two-dimensional Toda Lattice hierarchy (2DTL). We also show that the RTC is gauge equivalent to the discrete AKNS hierarchy and the unitary matrix model. Relativistic Toda molecule hierarchy is also considered, along with the forced RTC. The simple approach to the discrete RTC hierarchy based on Darboux-Bäcklund transformation is proposed.
We consider quantum analogs of the relativistic Toda lattices and give new $2\times 2$ $L$-operators for these models. Making use of the variable separation the spectral problem for the quantum integrals of motion is reduced to solving one-dimensional separation equations.
Affine Toda field theories with a purely transmitting integrable defect are considered and the model based on a_2 is analysed in detail. After providing a complete characterization of the problem in a classical framework, a suitable quantum transmission matrix, able to describe the interaction between an integrable defect and solitons, is found. Two independent paths are taken to reach the result. One is an investigation of the triangle equations using the S-matrix for the imaginary coupling bulk affine Toda field theories proposed by Hollowood, and the other uses a functional integral approac…
We derive non-abelian Toda field theories (NATFTs) from a 4d Chern-Simons (CS) theory with two order defects by employing a certain asymptotic boundary condition. The 4d CS theory is characterized by a meromorphic 1-form $ω$\,. We adopt $ω$ with two simple poles and no zeros, and each of the order defects is located at each pole. As a result, an anisotropy parameter $β^2$ can be identified with the distance between the two defects. As examples, we can derive the (complex) sine-Gordon model and the Liouville theory.
A Lagrangian approach is proposed and developed to study defects within affine Toda field theories. In particular, a suitable Lax pair is constructed together with examples of conserved charges. It is found that only those models based on $a_r^{(1)}$ data appear to allow defects preserving integrability. Surprisingly, despite the explicit breaking of Lorentz and translation invariance, modified forms of both energy and momentum are conserved. Some, but apparently not all, of the higher spin conserved charges are also preserved after the addition of contributions from the defect. This fact is i…
We study defects in non-relativistic conformal field theories. As in the well-studied case of relativistic conformal defects, we find that a useful tool to organize correlation functions is the defect operator expansion (dOPE). We analyze how the dOPE is implemented in theories with a holographic dual, highlighting some interesting aspects of the operator/state mapping in non-relativistic holography.
The concept of fusing rules for defects in a^(1)_r affine Toda field theories is introduced in the classical and quantum contexts. This idea is employed in finding a new transmission matrix for the a^(1)_3 theory which obeys the triangle relations and the crossing-unitarity relations.
A folding process is applied to fused a^(1)_r defects to construct defects for the non-simply laced affine Toda field theories of c^(1)_n, d^(2)_n and a^(2)_2n at the classical level. Support for the hypothesis that these defects are integrable in the folded theories is provided by the observation that transmitted solitons retain their form. Further support is given by the demonstration that energy and momentum are conserved.
A new integrable class of quantum models representing a family of different discrete-time or relativistic generalisations of the periodic Toda chain (TC), including that of a recently proposed classical close to TC model [7] is presented. All such models are shown to be obtainable from a single ancestor model at different realisations of the underlying quantised algebra. As a consequence the $(2\times 2)$ Lax operators and the associated quantum $R$-matrices for these models are easily derived ensuring their quantum integrability. It is shown that the functional Bethe ansatz developed for the …
The Liouville integrability of the generalised type II defects is investigated. Full integrability is not considered, only the existence of an infinite number of conserved quantities associated with a system containing a defect. For defects in affine Toda field theories (ATFTs) it is shown that momentum conservation is very likely to be a necessary condition for integrability. The defect Lax matrices which guarantee zero curvature, and so an infinite number of conserved quantities, are calculated for the momentum conserving Tzitzéica defect and the momentum conserving $D_4$ ATFT defect. Some a…
Type II integrable defects with more than one degree of freedom at the defect are investigated. A condition on the form of the Lagrangian for such defects is found which ensures the existence of a conserved momentum in the presence of the defect. In addition it is shown that for any Lagrangian satisfying this condition, the defect equations of motion, when taken to hold everywhere, can be extended to give a Bäcklund transformation between the bulk theories on either side of the defect. This strongly suggests that such systems are integrable. Momentum conserving defects and Bäcklund transformat…
N=2 supersymmetric extensions of both the periodic and non-periodic relativistic Toda lattice are built within the framework of the Hamiltonian formalism. A geodesic description in terms of a non-metric connection is discussed.
Transmission matrices for two types of integrable defect are calculated explicitly, first by solving directly the nonlinear transmission Yang-Baxter equations, and second by solving a linear intertwining relation between a finite dimensional representation of the relevant Borel subalgebra of the quantum group underpinning the integrable quantum field theory and a particular infinite dimensional representation expressed in terms of sets of generalized `quantum' annihilation and creation operators. The principal examples analysed are based on the $a_2^{(2)}$ and $a_n^{(1)}$ affine Toda models bu…
We advance a correspondence between the topological defect operators in Liouville and Toda conformal field theories - which we construct - and loop operators and domain wall operators in four dimensional N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories on S^4. Our computation of the correlation functions in Liouville/Toda theory in the presence of topological defect operators, which are supported on curves on the Riemann surface, yields the exact answer for the partition function of four dimensional gauge theories in the presence of various walls and loop operators; results which we can quantitatively substa…
We demonstrate that the generalization of the relativistic Toda chain (RTC) is a special reduction of two-dimensional Toda Lattice hierarchy (2DTL). This reduction implies that the RTC is gauge equivalent to the discrete AKNS hierarchy and, which is the same, to the two-component Volterra hierarchy while its forced (semi-infinite) variant is described by the unitary matrix integral. The integrable properties of the RTC hierarchy are revealed in different frameworks of: Lax representation, orthogonal polynomial systems, and $τ$-function approach. Relativistic Toda molecule hierarchy is also con…
The five-dimensional supersymmetric SU(N) gauge theory is studied in the framework of the relativistic Toda chain. This equation can be embedded in two-dimensional Toda lattice hierarchy. This system has the conjugate structure. This conjugate structure corresponds to the charge conjugation.
The relativistic quantum Toda chain model is studied with the generalized algebraic Bethe Ansatz method. By employing a set of local gauge transformations, proper local vacuum states can be obtained for this model. The exact spectrum and eigenstates of the model are thus constructed simultaneously.
We apply the Separation of Variables method to obtain eigenvectors of commuting Hamiltonians in the quantum relativistic Toda chain at a root of unity with boundary interaction.
We provide a proposal, motivated by Separation of Variables and gauge theory arguments, for constructing exact solutions to the quantum Baxter equation associated to the $N$-particle relativistic Toda chain and test our proposal against numerical results. Quantum Mechanical non-perturbative corrections, essential in order to obtain a sensible solution, are taken into account in our gauge theory approach by considering codimension two defects on curved backgrounds (squashed $S^5$ and degenerate limits) rather than flat space; this setting also naturally incorporates exact quantization condition…
Recent work on purely transmitting 'jump-defects' in the sine-Gordon model and other relativistic field theories is extended to non-relativistic models. In all the cases investigated the defect conditions are provided by 'frozen' Backlund transformations and it is also shown via a Lax pair argument how integrability will be preserved in the presence of this type of defect. Explicit examples of the scattering of solitons by defects are given, and bound states associated with 'jump-defects' in the nonlinear Schrodinger model are described. Although the nonlinear Schrodinger model provides the pr…
The partition function of $\mathcal{N}=2$ super Yang-Mills theories with arbitrary simple gauge group coupled to a self-dual $Ω$-background is shown to be fully determined by studying the renormalization group equations relevant to the surface operators generating its one-form symmetries. The corresponding system of equations results in a ${\it non-autonomous}$ Toda chain on the root system of the Langlands dual, the evolution parameter being the RG scale. A systematic algorithm computing the full multi-instanton corrections is derived in terms of recursion relations whose gauge theoretical so…
Inspired by recent connections between spectral theory and topological string theory, we propose exact quantization conditions for the relativistic Toda lattice of N particles. These conditions involve the Nekrasov-Shatashvili free energy, which resums the perturbative WKB expansion, but they require in addition a non-perturbative contribution, which is related to the perturbative result by an S-duality transformation of the Planck constant. We test the quantization conditions against explicit calculations of the spectrum for N=3. Our proposal can be generalized to arbitrary toric Calabi-Yau m…
We consider topological defect networks with junctions in $A_{N-1}$ Toda CFT and the connection to supersymmetric loop operators in $\mathcal{N} = 2$ theories of class S on a four-sphere. Correlation functions in the presence of topological defect networks are computed by exploiting the monodromy of conformal blocks, generalising the notion of a Verlinde operator. Concentrating on a class of topological defects in $A_2$ Toda theory, we find that the Verlinde operators generate an algebra whose structure is determined by a set of generalised skein relations. These relations encode the represent…
In this paper, we analyzed the relativistic quantum motion of a charged scalar particles in the presence of a Aharonov Bohm and Coulomb potentials in the spacetimes produced by an idealized cosmic strings and global monopoles.
We initiate the study of intersecting surface operators/defects in four-dimensional quantum field theories (QFTs). We characterize these defects by coupled 4d/2d/0d theories constructed by coupling the degrees of freedom localized at a point and on intersecting surfaces in spacetime to each other and to the four-dimensional QFT. We construct supersymmetric intersecting surface defects preserving just two supercharges in N = 2 gauge theories. These defects are amenable to exact analysis by localization of the partition function of the underlying 4d/2d/0d QFT. We identify the 4d/2d/0d QFTs that …
Affine Toda theory is a relativistic integrable theory in two dimensions possessing solutions describing a number of different species of solitons when the coupling is chosen to be imaginary. These nevertheless carry real energy and momentum. To each species of soliton there has to correspond an antisoliton species. There are two different ways of realising the antisoliton whose equivalence is shown to follow from a surprising identity satisfied within the underlying affine Kac-Moody group. This is the classical analogue of the crossing property of analytic S-matrix theory. Since a complex par…
We extend the construction of the relativistic Toda chains as integrable systems on the Poisson submanifolds in Lie groups beyond the case of A-series. For the simply-laced case this is just a direct generalization of the well-known relativistic Toda chains, and we construct explicitly the set of the Ad-invariant integrals of motion on symplectic leaves, which can be described by the Poisson quivers being just the blown up Dynkin diagrams. We also demonstrate how to get the set of "minimal" integrals of motion, using the co-multiplication rules for the corresponding Lie algebras. In the non si…
The solitons of affine Toda field theory are related to the spin-generalised Ruijsenaars-Schneider (or relativistic Calogero-Moser) models. This provides the sought after extension of the correspondence between the sine-Gordon solitons and the Ruijsenaars-Schneider model.
In this paper we describe how relativistic field theories containing defects are equivalent to a class of boundary field theories. As a consequence previously derived results for boundaries can be directly applied to defects, these results include reduction formulas, the Coleman-Thun mechanism and Cutcosky rules. For integrable theories the defect crossing unitarity equation can be derived and defect operator found. For a generic purely transmitting impurity we use the boundary bootstrap method to obtain solutions of the defect Yang-Baxter equation. The groundstate energy on the strip with def…
Within a one particle approximation of the Dirac equation we investigate a defect system in a quantum wire. We demonstrate that by minimally coupling a laser field of frequency omega to such an impurity system, one may generate harmonics of multiples of the driving frequency. In a multiple defect system one may employ the distance between the defects in order to tune the cut-off frequency.
A manifestly covariant equation is derived to describe the second order perturbations in topological defects and membranes on arbitrary curved background spacetimes. This, on one hand, generalizes work on macroscopic strings in Minkowski spacetime and introduces a framework for studing in a precise manner membranes behavior near the black hole horizon and on the other hand, introduces a more general framework for examining the stability of topological defects in curved spacetimes.
In this paper, we study the covariant form of the non-relativistic Schrodinger-Pauli equation in the space-time generated by a cosmic string and discuss the solutions of this equation in present of interaction between the magnetic dipole momentum and electromagnetic field. We study the influence of the topology on this system. We obtain the solution of radial part as well as the energy levels. We consider all thermodynamic properties of neutral particle in magnetic cosmic string background by using an approach based on the partition function method.
Affine Toda field theories in two dimensions constitute families of integrable, relativistically invariant field theories in correspondence with the affine Kac-Moody algebras. The particles which are the quantum excitations of the fields display interesting patterns in their masses and coupling and which have recently been shown to extend to the classical soliton solutions arising when the couplings are imaginary. Here these results are extended from the untwisted to the twisted algebras. The new soliton solutions and their masses are found by a folding procedure which can be applied to the af…
The concept of point-like "jump" defects is investigated in the context of affine Toda field theories. The Hamiltonian formulation is employed for the analysis of the problem. The issue is also addressed when integrable boundary conditions ruled by the classical twisted Yangian are present. In both periodic and boundary cases explicit expressions of conserved quantities as well as the relevant Lax pairs and sewing conditions are extracted. It is also observed that in the case of the twisted Yangian the bulk behavior is not affected by the presence of the boundaries.
In this paper we study a suitable limit of integrable QFT with the aim to identify continuous non-relativistic integrable models with local interactions. This limit amounts to sending to infinity the speed of light c but simultaneously adjusting the coupling constant g of the quantum field theories in such a way to keep finite the energies of the various excitations. The QFT considered here are Toda Field Theories and the O(N) non-linear sigma model. In both cases the resulting non-relativistic integrable models consist only of Lieb-Liniger models, which are fully decoupled for the Toda theori…
We study generic types of holographic matter residing in Lifshitz invariant defect field theory as modeled by adding probe D-branes in the bulk black hole spacetime characterized by dynamical exponent $z$ and with hyperscaling violation exponent $θ$. Our main focus will be on the collective excitations of the dense matter in the presence of an external magnetic field. Constraining the defect field theory to 2+1 dimensions, we will also allow the gauge fields become dynamical and study the properties of a strongly coupled anyonic fluid. We will deduce the universal properties of holographic mat…
We couple two copies of the supersymmetric mKdV hierarchy by means of the algebraic dressing technique. This allows to deduce the whole set of $(N,N)$ supersymmetry transformations of the relativistic sector of the extended mKdV hierarchy and to interpret them as fermionic symmetry flows. The construction is based on an extended Riemann-Hilbert problem for affine Kac-Moody superalgebras with a half-integer gradation. A generalized set of relativistic-like fermionic local current identities is introduced and it is shown that the simplest one, corresponding to the lowest isospectral times $t_{\p…
Current theories of particle physics lead to the unavoidable conclusion that there must have been several phase transitions in the early universe. Further, in the context of these theories, it is possible that cosmological phase transitions would have produced topological defects that may be roaming our heavens today. A finding of these fossils from the early universe would provide a direct confirmation of the thermal history of the cosmos, insight into astrophysical phenomena, and, vital information about particle physics. The elimination of unobserved topological defects provides important c…
The cosmological evolution of topological defect networks can broadly be divided into two stages. At early times they are friction-dominated due to particle scattering and therefore non-relativistic, and may either be conformally stretched or evolve in the Kibble regime. At late times they are relativistic and evolve in the well known linear scaling regime. In this work we show that a sufficiently large Hubble damping (that is a sufficiently fast expansion rate) leads to a linear scaling regime where the network is non-relativistic. This is therefore another realization of a Kibble scaling reg…
Energy and momentum conservation in the context of a type II, purely transmitting, defect, within a single scalar relativistic two-dimensional field theory, places a severe constraint not only on the nature of the defect but also on the potentials for the scalar fields to either side of it. The constraint is of an unfamiliar type since it requires the Poisson Bracket of the defect contributions to energy and momentum with respect to the defect discontinuity and its conjugate to be balanced by the potential difference across the defect. It is shown that the only solutions to the constraint corr…
We study the motion of topological defects in 1+1 and 2+1 d relativistic $ϕ^6$ model with three equal vacua in the presence of radiation. We show that even small fluctuations can trigger a chain reaction leading to vanishing of topological defects. Only one vacuum remains stable and domains containing other vacua vanish. We explain this phenomenon in terms of radiation pressure (both positive and negative). We construct an effective model which translates the fluctuations into additional term in the field theory potential. In case of two dimensional model we find a relation between the critica…
In this paper, we analyze Dirac fermions in Gödel-type background space-times with torsion. We also consider the Gödel-type spacetimes embedded in a topological defect background. We show that relativistic bound states solutions to the Dirac equation can be obtained by dealing with three cases of the Gödel-type solutions with torsion, where a cosmic string passes through these three cases of the space-time. We obtain the relativistic energy levels for all cases of the Gödel-type solutions with torsion with a cosmic string, where we show that there exists an analogy with the Landau levels for D…
Particle detectors are an ubiquitous tool for probing quantum fields in the context of relativistic quantum information (RQI). We formulate the Unruh-DeWitt (UDW) particle detector model in terms of the path integral formalism. The formulation is able to recover the results of the model in general globally hyperbolic spacetimes and for arbitrary detector trajectories. Integrating out the detector's degrees of freedom yields a line defect that allows one to express the transition probability in terms of Feynman diagrams. Inspired by the light-matter interaction, we propose a gauge invariant det…
