We prove a warped product splitting theorem for manifolds with Ricci curvature bounded from below in the spirit of [Croke-Kleiner, \emph{Duke Math.\;J}.\;(1992)], but instead of asking that one boundary component is compact and mean-convex, we require that it is parabolic and convex. We then deduce several applications, including splitting theorems and first Betti number rigidity results for
- $3$-manifolds with non-negative Ricci curvature,
- $4$-manifolds with weakly bounded geometry, non-negative $2$-Ricci curvature, scalar curvature $\geq 1$.
In particular, the latter aswers to a rigidity question posed by [Chodosh-Li-Stryker, \emph{JEMS},\;(2024)]. The proofs rely on a metric gluing of Riemannian manifolds with boundary, resulting in a non-smooth metric space. To address this lack of smoothness, we employ synthetic tools specifically developed for non-smooth settings, with a focus on those based on optimal transportation.
We extend to metric compact mapping tori a splitting result for coKähler manifolds. In particular, we prove that a compact Vaisman manifold is finitely covered by the product of a Sasakian manifold and a circle.
In this paper, we study and partially classify those Riemannian man-ifolds carrying a non-identically vanishing function f whose Hessian is minus f times the Ricci-tensor of the manifold.
In this paper we study some splitting properties on complete noncompact manifolds with smooth measures when $\infty$-dimensional Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature is bounded from below by some negative constant and spectrum of the weighted Laplacian has a positive lower bound. These results extend the cases of Ricci curvature and $m$-dimensional Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature.
We investigate the structure of a Finsler manifold of nonnegative weighted Ricci curvature including a straight line, and extend the classical Cheeger-Gromoll-Lichnerowicz splitting theorem. Such a space admits a diffeomorphic, measure-preserving splitting in general. As for a special class of Berwald spaces, we can perform the isometric splitting in the sense that there is a one-parameter family of isometries generated from the gradient vector field of the Busemann function. A Betti number estimate is also given for Berwald spaces.

In this paper we prove an area comparison result for certain totally geodesic surfaces in 3-manifolds with a lower bound on the scalar curvature. This result is a variant of a comparison theorem of Heintze-Karcher for minimal hypersurfaces in manifolds of nonnegative Ricci curvature. Our assumptions on the ambient manifold are weaker but the assumptions on the surface are considerably more restrictive. We then use our comparison theorem to provide a unified proof of various splitting theorems for 3-manifolds with lower bounds on the scalar curvature.
We show an analogue of the Lorentzian splitting theorem for weighted Lorentz-Finsler manifolds: If a weighted Berwald spacetime of nonnegative weighted Ricci curvature satisfies certain completeness and metrizability conditions and includes a timelike straight line, then it necessarily admits a one-dimensional family of isometric translations generated by the gradient vector field of a Busemann function. Moreover, our formulation in terms of the $ε$-range introduced in our previous work enables us to unify the previously known splitting theorems for weighted Lorentzian manifolds by Case and Wo…
We investigate the rigidity problem for the sharp spectral gap on Finsler manifolds of weighted Ricci curvature bound $\text{Ric}_{\infty} \geq K > 0$. Our main results show that if the equality holds, the manifold necessarily admits a diffeomorphic splitting (or isometric splitting in the particular class of Berwald spaces). This splitting phenomenon is comparable to the Cheeger-Gromoll type splitting theorem by Ohta. We also obtain the rigidity results of logarithmic Sobolev and Bakry-Ledoux isoperimetric inequalities via needle decomposition as corollaries.
Each compact Riemannian manifold with no conjugate points admits a family of functions whose integrals vanish exactly when central Busemann functions split linearly. These functions vanish when all central Busemann functions are sub- or superharmonic. When central Busemann functions are convex or concave, they must be totally geodesic. These yield generalizations of the splitting theorems of O'Sullivan and Eberlein for manifolds with no focal points and, respectively, nonpositive curvature.
This paper looks at the splitting problem for globally hyperbolic spacetimes with timelike Ricci curvature bounded below containing a (spacelike, acausal, future causally complete) hypersurface with mean curvature bounded from above. For such spacetimes we show a splitting theorem under the assumption of either the existence of a ray of maximal length or a maximality condition on the volume of Lorentzian distance balls over the hypersurface. The proof of the first case follows work by Andersson, Galloway and Howard and uses their geometric maximum principle for level sets of the (Lorentzian) B…
We consider Riemannian $n$-manifolds $M$ with nontrivial $κ$-nullity "distribution" of the curvature tensor $R$, namely, the variable rank distribution of tangent subspaces to $M$ where $R$ coincides with the curvature tensor of a space of constant curvature $κ$ ($κ\in\mathbb R$) is nontrivial. We obtain classification theorems under diferent additional assumptions, in terms of low nullity/conullity, controlled scalar curvature or existence of quotients of finite volume. We prove new results, but also revisit previous ones.
We show that a non-compact (forward) complete Finsler manifold whose Holmes- Thompson volume is infinite admits no non-trivial convex functions. We apply this result to some Finsler manifolds whose Busemann function is convex.
A characterization of the proximal normal cone is obtained and a separation theorem for convex subsets of Riemannian manifolds is established. Moreover, the convexity of the distance function $d_S$ for a convex subset $S$ in the cases where the boundary of $S$ contains a geodesic segment, the boundary of $S$ is $C^2$ or the boundary of $S$ is not regular is discussed. Furthermore, a nonsmooth version of positive semi-definiteness of Hessian of convex functions on Riemannian manifolds is established.
We give a necessary condition on a geodesic in a Riemannian manifold that can run in some convex hypersurface. As a corollary we obtain peculiar properties that hold true for every convex set in any generic Riemannian manifold (M,g). For example, if a convex set in (M,g) is bounded by a smooth hypersurface, then it is strictly convex.
In [AMW], it is proved that if a compact $3$-manifold has positive Ricci curvature and strictly convex boundary, then this manifold is diffeomorphic to the standard $3$-dimensional Euclidean disk. In this paper, we prove its higher-dimensional generalization: if a compact $n$-manifold has positive curvature operator and strictly convex boundary, then this manifold is diffeomorphic to the standard $n$-dimensional Euclidean disk.
A vanishing theorem for a convex cocompact hyperbolic manifold is established, which relates the L2 cohomology to the Hausdorff dimension of the limit set. The borderline case is shown to characterize the manifold completely.
We propose a new approach to the study of compact Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature and strictly convex boundary or positive Ricci curvature and convex boundary. Several conjectures are formulated. Some partial results that support these conjectures are established.
Locally convex compact immersed hypersurfaces in Finsler-Hadamard manifolds with bounded T-curvature are considered. We prove that such hypersurfaces are embedded as the boundary of convex body under certain conditions on the normal curvatures
We demonstrate an obstruction to finding certain splittings of four-manifolds along sufficiently twisted circle bundles over Riemann surfaces, arising from Seiberg-Witten theory. These obstructions are used to show a non-splitting result for algebraic surfaces of general type.
Using the convex functions in Grassmannian manifolds we can carry out interior estimates for mean curvature flow of higher codimension. In this way some of the results of Ecker-Huisken can be generalized to higher codimension
By Cheeger-Colding's almost splitting theorem, if a domain in a Ricci flat manifold is pointed-Gromov-Hausdorff close to a lower dimensional Euclidean domain, then there is a harmonic almost splitting map. We show that any eigenfunction of the Laplace operator is almost constant along the fibers of the almost splitting map, in the $L^2$-average sense. This generalizes an estimate of Fukaya in the case of collapsing with bounded diameter and sectional curvature.
In this paper, we establish various L2-estimates for the exterior differential operator on p-convex Riemannian manifolds in the sense of Harvey and Lawson. As geometric applications, we prove vanishing and finiteness results for the de Rham cohomology groups.
We survey the main extensions of the classical Hadamard, Liebmann and Cohn-Vossen rigidity theorems on convex surfaces of $3$-Euclidean space to the context of convex hypersurfaces of Riemannian manifolds. The results we present include the one by Professor Renato Tribuzy (in collaboration with H. Rosenberg) on rigidity of convex surfaces of homogeneous $3$-manifolds.
The main result is a short effective proof of Tao Li's theorem that a closed non Haken hyperbolic 3-manifold N has at most finitely many irreducible Heegaard splittings.
In a complete simply connected Riemannian manifold X of pinched negative curvature, we give a sharp criterion for a subset C to be the epsilon-neighbourhood of some convex subset of X, in terms of the extrinsic curvatures of the boundary of C.
In this paper we provide some local and global splitting results on complete Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature. We achieve the splitting through the analysis of some pointwise inequalities of Modica type which hold true for every bounded solution to a semilinear Poisson equation. More precisely, we prove that the existence of a nonconstant bounded solution $u$ for which one of the previous inequalities becomes an equality at some point leads to the splitting results as well as to a classification of such a solution $u$.
The long standing classification problem in the theory of Heegaard splittings of 3-manifolds is to exhibit for each closed 3-manifold a complete list, without duplication, of all its irreducible Heegaard surfaces, up to isotopy. We solve this problem for non Haken hyperbolic 3-manifolds.
We prove that if a compact Kähler Poisson manifold has a symplectic leaf with finite fundamental group, then after passing to a finite étale cover, it decomposes as the product of the universal cover of the leaf and some other Poisson manifold. As a step in the proof, we establish a special case of Beauville's conjecture on the structure of compact Kähler manifolds with split tangent bundle.
We prove the existence of free boundary minimal annuli inside suitably convex subsets of three-dimensional Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature $-$ including strictly convex domains of the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^3$.
The works of Donaldson and Mark make the structure of the Seiberg-Witten invariant of 3-manifolds clear. It corresponds to certain torsion type invariants counting flow lines and closed orbits of a gradient flow of a circle-valued Morse map on a 3-manifold. We study these invariants using the Morse-Novikov theory and Heegaard splitting for sutured manifolds, and make detailed computations for knot complements.
We establish a splitting formula for the spectral flow of the odd signature operator on a closed 3-manifold M coupled to a path of SU(2) connections, provided M = S cup X, where S is the solid torus. It describes the spectral flow on M in terms of the spectral flow on S, the spectral flow on X (with certain Atiyah-Patodi-Singer boundary conditions), and two correction terms which depend only on the endpoints. Our result improves on other splitting theorems by removing assumptions on the non-resonance level of the odd signature operator or the dimension of the kernel of the tangential operator,…
Let K be a connected Lie group and M a Hamiltonian K-manifold. In this paper, we introduce the notion of convexity of M. It implies that the momentum image is convex, the moment map has connected fibers, and the total moment map is open onto its image. Conversely, the three properties above imply convexity. We show that most Hamiltonian manifolds occuring "in nature" are convex (e.g., if M is compact, complex algebraic, or a cotangent bundle). Moreover, every Hamiltonian manifold is locally convex. This is an expanded version of section 2 of my paper dg-ga/9712010 on Weyl groups of Hamiltonian…
We establish the splitting lemmas (or generalized Morse lemmas) for the energy functionals of Finsler metrics on the natural Hilbert manifolds of $H^1$-curves around a critical point or a critical $\R^1$ orbit of a Finsler isometry invariant closed geodesic. They are the desired generalization on Finsler manifolds of the corresponding Gromoll-Meyer's splitting lemmas on Riemannian manifolds (\cite{GM1, GM2}). As an application we extend to Finsler manifolds a result by Grove and Tanaka \cite{GroTa78, Tan82} about the existence of infinitely many, geometrically distinct, isometry invariant clos…
Based on recent work of S. K. Donaldson and T. Mabuchi, we prove that any extremal Kaehler metric in the sense of E. Calabi, defined on the product of polarized compact complex projective manifolds is the product of extremal Kaehler metrics on each factor, provided that the integral Futaki invariants of the polarized manifold vanish or its automorphism group satisfies a constraint. This extends a result of S.-T. Yau about the splitting of a Kaehler-Einstein metric on the product of compact complex manifolds to the more general setting of extremal Kaehler metrics.
A compact Fuchsian manifold with boundary is a hyperbolic 3-manifold homeomorphic to $S_g \times [0; 1]$ such that the boundary component $S_g \times \{ 0\}$ is geodesic. We prove that a compact Fuchsian manifold with convex boundary is uniquely determined by the induced path metric on $S_g \times \{1\}$. We do not put further restrictions on the boundary except convexity.
We consider Gromov-Thurston examples of negatively curved n-manifolds which do not admit metrics of constant sectional curvature. We show that for each n some of the Gromov-Thurston manifolds admit strictly convex real-projective structures.
In this paper we show that bending a finite volume hyperbolic $d$-manifold $M$ along a totally geodesic hypersurface $Σ$ results in a properly convex projective structure on $M$ with finite volume. We also discuss various geometric properties of bent manifolds and algebraic properties of their fundamental groups. We then use this result to show in each dimension $d\geq 3$ there are examples finite volume, but non-compact, properly convex $d$-manifolds. Furthermore, we show that the examples can be chosen to be either strictly convex or non-strictly convex.
We prove entropy rigidity for finite volume strictly convex projective manifolds in dimensions $\geq 3$, generalizing the work of arXiv:1708.03983 to the finite volume setting. The rigidity theorem uses the techniques of Besson, Courtois, and Gallot's entropy rigidity theorem. It implies uniform lower bounds on the volume of any finite volume strictly convex projective manifold in dimensions $\geq 3$.
