Let K be a connected Lie group and M a Hamiltonian K-manifold. In this paper, we introduce the notion of convexity of M. It implies that the momentum image is convex, the moment map has connected fibers, and the total moment map is open onto its image. Conversely, the three properties above imply convexity. We show that most Hamiltonian manifolds occuring "in nature" are convex (e.g., if M is compact, complex algebraic, or a cotangent bundle). Moreover, every Hamiltonian manifold is locally convex. This is an expanded version of section 2 of my paper dg-ga/9712010 on Weyl groups of Hamiltonian manifolds.
We show that the cone associated with a moment map for an action of a torus on a contact compact connected manifold is a convex polyhedral cone and that the moment map has connected fibers provided the dimension of the torus is bigger than 2 and that no orbit is tangent to the contact distribution. This may be considered as a version of the Atiyah - Guillemin - Sternberg convexity theorem for torus actions on symplectic cones and as a direct generalization of the convexity theorem of Banyaga and Molino for completely integrable torus actions on contact manifolds.
We generalize a result of Giroux which says that a closed surface in a contact $3$-manifold with Morse-Smale characteristic foliation is convex. Specifically, we show that the result holds in contact manifolds of arbitrary dimension. As an application, we show that a particular closed hypersurface introduced by A. Mori is $C^{\infty}$-close to a convex hypersurface.
We study generalized moment maps for a Hamiltonian action on a connected compact $H$-twisted generalized complex manifold introduced by Lin and Tolman and prove the convexity and connectedness properties of the generalized moment maps for a Hamiltonian torus action.
This work is devoted to a systematic study of symplectic convexity for integrable Hamiltonian systems with elliptic and focus-focus singularities. A distinctive feature of these systems is that their base spaces are still smooth manifolds (with boundary and corners), similarly to the toric case, but their associated integral affine structures are singular, with non-trivial monodromy, due to focus singularities. We obtain a series of convexity results, both positive and negative, for such singular integral affine base spaces. In particular, near a focus singular point, they are locally convex a…
In [GMPS] we proved that the moment map image of a $b$-symplectic toric manifold is a convex $b$-polytope. In this paper we obtain convexity results for the more general case of non-toric hamiltonian torus actions on $b$-symplectic manifolds. The modular weights of the action on the connected components of the exceptional hypersurface play a fundamental role: either they are all zero and the moment map behaves as in classic symplectic one, or they are all nonzero and the moment map behaves as in the toric $b$-symplectic case studied in [GMPS].
The convexity and Morse-theoretic properties of moment maps in symplectic geometry typically fail for presymplectic manifolds. We find a condition on presymplectic moment maps that prevents these failures. Our result applies for instance to Prato's quasifolds and to Hamiltonian actions on contact manifolds and cosymplectic manifolds.
In this paper, we extend the Atiyah--Guillemin--Sternberg convexity theorem and Delzant's classification of symplectic toric manifolds to presymplectic manifolds. We also define and study the Morita equivalence of presymplectic toric manifolds and of their corresponding framed momentum polytopes, which may be rational or non-rational. Toric orbifolds, quasifolds and non-commutative toric varieties may be viewed as the quotient of our presymplectic toric manifolds by the kernel isotropy foliation of the presymplectic form.
The main result of this paper is a quasi-hamiltonian analogue of a special case of the O'Shea-Sjamaar convexity theorem for usual momentum maps. We denote by U a simply connected compact connected Lie group and we fix an involutive automorphism of maximal rank on this Lie group (such an automorphism always exists). We then denote by M a quasi-hamiltonian U-space and we prove that the image under the momentum map of the fixed-point set of a form-reversing compatible involution of M is a convex polytope, which is in fact equal to the full momentum polytope. This theorem was announced in arXiv:ma…
In this paper, we consider generalized moment maps for Hamiltonian actions on $H$-twisted generalized complex manifolds introduced by Lin and Tolman \cite{Lin}. The main purpose of this paper is to show convexity and connectedness properties for generalized moment maps. We study Hamiltonian torus actions on compact $H$-twisted generalized complex manifolds and prove that all components of the generalized moment map are Bott-Morse functions. Based on this, we shall show that the generalized moment maps have a convex image and connected fibers. Furthermore, by applying the arguments of Lerman, M…
Let a torus T act effectively on a compact connected cooriented contact manifold, and let Psi be the natural momentum map on the symplectization. We prove that, if dim T > 2, the union of the origin with the image of Psi is a convex polyhedral cone, the non-zero level sets of Psi are connected (while the zero level set can be disconnected), and the momentum map is open as a map to its image. This answers a question posed by Eugene Lerman, who proved similar results when the zero level set is empty. We also analyze examples with dim T <= 2.
In the early $1980$s a landmark result was obtained by Atiyah and independently Guillemin and Sternberg: the image of the momentum map for a torus action on a compact symplectic manifold is a convex polyhedron. Atiyah's proof makes use of the fact that level sets of the momentum map are connected. These proofs work in the setting of finite-dimensional compact symplectic manifolds. One can ask how these results generalize. A well-known example of an infinite-dimensional symplectic manifold with a finite-dimensional torus action is the based loop group. Atiyah and Pressley proved convexity for t…
We extend the famous convexity theorem of Atiyah, Guillemin and Sternberg to the case of non-Hamiltonian actions. We show that the image of a generalized momentum map is a bounded polytope times a vector space. We prove that this picture is stable for small perturbations of the symplectic form. We also observe that an n-dimensional torus symplectic action on a 2n-dimensional symplectic manifold, with fixed point, is Hamiltonian. We finally prove that an extension of Kirwan's convexity theorem (for compact group actions) is also true.
We consider a Hamiltonian torus action on a compact connected symplectic manifold M. For a certain class of Lagrangian submanifolds Q of M we show that the image of Q under the momentum map is convex. As an application we complete the symplectic proof of Kostant's non-linear convexity theorem.
In this paper we prove a convexity and fibre-connectedness theorem for proper maps constructed by Thimm's trick on a connected Hamiltonian $G$-space $M$ that generate a Hamiltonian torus action on an open dense submanifold. Since these maps only generate a Hamiltonian torus action on an open dense submanifold of $M$, convexity and fibre-connectedness do not follow immediately from Atiyah-Guillemin-Sternberg's convexity theorem, even if $M$ is compact. The core contribution of this paper is to provide a simple argument circumventing this difficulty. In the case where the map is constructed from…
The main result of this paper is a convexity theorem for momentum mappings of certain hamiltonian actions of noncompact semisimple Lie groups. The image is required to fall within a certain open subset D of the (dual of the) Lie algebra, and the momentum map itself is required to be proper as a map to D. The set D corresponds roughly, via the orbit method, to the discrete series of representations of the group, Much of the paper is devoted to the study of D itself, which consists of the Lie algebra elements which have compact centralizer. When the group is Sp(2n), these elements are the ones w…
In this work, we prove a compactness theorem on the space of all Hamiltonian stationay Lagrangian submanifolds in a compact symplectic manifold with uniform bounds on area and total extrinsic curvature.
If $K$ is a compact, connected, simply connected Lie group, its based loop group $ΩK$ is endowed with a Hamiltonian $S^1 \times T$ action, where $T$ is a maximal torus of $K$. Atiyah and Pressley examined the image of $ΩK$ under the moment map $μ$, while Jeffrey and Mare examined the corresponding image of the real locus $ΩK^τ$ for a compatible anti-symplectic involution $τ$. Both papers generalize well known results in finite dimensions, specifically the Atiyah-Guillemin-Sternberg theorem, and Duistermaat's convexity theorem. In the spirit of Kirwan's convexity theorem, this paper aims to fur…
We prove that $π_1(\text{Ham}(M))$ contains an infinite cyclic subgroup, where $\text{Ham}(M)$ is the Hamiltonian group of the one point blow up of ${\Bbb C}P^3$. We give a sufficient condition for the group $π_1(\text{Ham}(M))$ to contain an infinite cyclic subgroup, when $M$ is a general toric manifold.
Delzant's theorem for symplectic toric manifolds says that there is a one-to-one correspondence between certain convex polytopes in $\mathbb{R}^n$ and symplectic toric $2n$-manifolds, realized by the image of the moment map. I review proofs of this theorem and the convexity theorem of Atiyah-Guillemin-Sternberg on which it relies. Then, I describe Honda's results on the local structure of near-symplectic 4-manifolds, and inspired by recent work of Gay-Symington, I describe a generalization of Delzant's theorem to near-symplectic toric 4-manifolds. One interesting feature of the generalization …
A long-standing conjecture in Hamiltonian Dynamics states that the Reeb flow of any convex hypersurface in $\mathbb{R}^{2n}$ carries an elliptic closed orbit. Two important contributions toward its proof were given by Ekeland in 1986 and Dell'Antonio-D'Onofrio-Ekeland in 1995 proving this for convex hypersurfaces satisfying suitable pinching conditions and for antipodal invariant convex hypersurfaces respectively. In this work we present a generalization of these results using contact homology and a notion of dynamical convexity first introduced by Hofer-Wysocki-Zehnder for tight contact forms…
A (quasi-)Hamiltonian manifold is called multiplicity free if all of its symplectic reductions are 0-dimensional. In this paper, we classify multiplicity free Hamiltonian actions for (twisted) loop groups or, equivalently, multiplicity free (twisted) quasi-Hamiltonian manifolds for simply connected compact Lie groups. As a result we recover old and find new examples of these structures.
M. Brion proved a convexity result for the moment map image of an irreducible subvariety of a compact integral Kaehler manifold preserved by the complexification of the Hamiltonian group action. V. Guillemin and R. Sjamaar generalized this result to irreducible subvarieties preserved only by a Borel subgroup. In another direction, L. O'Shea and R. Sjamaar proved a convexity result for the moment map image of the submanifold fixed by an antisymplectic involution. Analogous to Guillemin and Sjamaar's generalization of Brion's theorem, in this paper we generalize O'Shea and Sjamaar's result, prov…
We compute the sheaf of automorphisms of a multiplicity free Hamiltonian manifold over its momentum polytope and show that its higher cohomology groups vanish. Together with a theorem of Losev, arXiv:math/0612561, this implies a conjecture of Delzant: a compact multiplicity free Hamiltonian manifold is uniquely determined by its momentum polytope and its principal isotropy group.
A classical theorem of Frankel for compact Kähler manifolds states that a Kähler S^1-action is Hamiltonian if and only if it has fixed points. We prove a metatheorem which says that when Hodge theory holds on non-compact manifolds, then Frankel's theorem still holds. Finally, we present several concrete situations in which the assumptions of the metatheorem hold.
A simple Hamiltonian manifold is a closed connected symplectic manifold equipped with a Hamiltonian action of a torus T with moment map Phi: M-->t^*, such that the fixed set M^T has exactly two connected components, denoted M_0 and M_1. We study the differential and symplectic geometry of simple Hamiltonian manifolds, including a large number of examples.
We give a complete characterization of Hamiltonian actions of compact Lie groups on exact symplectic manifolds with proper momentum maps. We deduce that every Hamiltonian action of a compact Lie group on a contractible symplectic manifold with a proper momentum map is globally linearizable.
This paper is devoted to the study of symplectic manifolds and their connection with Hamiltonian dynamical systems. We review some properties and operations on these manifolds and see how they intervene when studying the complete integrability of these systems, with detailed proofs. Several explicit calculations for which references are not immediately available are given. These results are exemplified by applications to some Hamiltonian dynamical systems.
In this paper, we study the hard Lefschetz property of a symplectic manifold which admits a Hamiltonian torus action. More precisely, let $(M,ω)$ be a 6-dimensional compact symplectic manifold with a Hamiltonian $T^2$-action. We will show that if the moment map image of $M$ is a GKM-graph and if the graph is index-increasing, then $(M,ω)$ satisfies the hard Lefschetz property.
We show that the quotient associated to a quasi-Hamiltonian space has a symplectic structure even when 1 is not a regular value of the momentum map: it is a disjoint union of symplectic manifolds of possibly different dimensions, which generalizes a result of Alekseev, Malkin and Meinrenken. We illustrate this theorem with the example of representation spaces of surface groups. As an intermediary step, we show that the isotropy submanifolds of a quasi-Hamiltonian space are quasi-Hamiltonian spaces themselves.
This paper defines symplectic scale manifolds based on Hofer-Wysocki-Zehnder's scale calculus. We introduce Hamiltonian vector fields and flows on these by narrowing down sc-smoothness to what we denote by strong sc-smoothness, a concept which effectively formalizes the desired smoothness properties for Hamiltonian functions. We show the concept to be invariant under sc-smooth symplectomorphisms, whence it is compatible with Hofer's scale manifolds. We develop and verify the theory at the hand of the free Schrödinger equation.
We show that a generic Hamiltonian diffeomorphism on a closed symplectic manifold which is symplectically aspherical has at least the stable Morse number of fixed points - this is in line with a conjecture by Arnold.
Let $(M, ω)$ be a connected, compact symplectic manifold equipped with a Hamiltonian $S^1$ action. We prove that, as fundamental groups of topological spaces, $π_1(M)=π_1(\hbox{minimum})=π_1(\hbox{maximum})=π_1(M_{red})$, where $M_{red}$ is the symplectic quotient at any value in the image of the moment map $ϕ$.
Assume $(M, ω)$ is a connected, compact 6 dimensional symplectic manifold equipped with a semi-free Hamiltonian circle action, such that the fixed point set consists of isolated points or compact orientable surfaces. We restrict attention to the case $\dim$ $H^2(M)<3$. We give a complete list of the possible manifolds, determine their equivariant cohomology ring and equivariant Chern classes. Some of these manifolds are classified up to diffeomorphism. We also show the existence for a few cases.
Let $(M,ω)$ be a closed $2n$-dimensional symplectic manifold equipped with a Hamiltonian $T^{n-1}$-action. Then Atiyah-Guillemin-Sternberg convexity theorem implies that the image of the moment map is an $(n-1)$-dimensional convex polytope. In this paper, we show that the density function of the Duistermaat-Heckman measure is log-concave on the image of the moment map.
Let $(M, ω)$ be a connected compact symplectic manifold equipped with a Hamiltonian SU(2) or SO(3) action. We prove that, as fundamental group of topological spaces, $π_1(M)=π_1(M_{red})$, where $M_{red}$ is the symplectic quotient at any value of the moment map $ϕ$.
We study analysis over infinite dimensional manifolds consisted by sequences of almost Kähler manifolds. In particular we develop moduli theory of pseudo holomorphic curves into the spaces with high symmetry. As applications, we study Hamiltonian dynamics over the infinite dimensional manifolds, and induce some dynamical properties of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms on such spaces.
In the paper we describe obstructions for the existence of symplectic and Hamiltonian symplectic circle actions on closed compact manifolds in terms of Hirzebruch genera and relations between differential and homotopic invariants of such manifolds.
We classify all momentum polytopes of rank one for multiplicity free quasi-Hamiltonian $K$-manifolds for simple and simply connected Lie groups $K$ by using the methods developed in a recent paper by F. Knop. This leads to lots of new concrete examples of multiplicity free quasi-Hamiltonian manifolds or equivalently, Hamiltonian loop group actions.
