Significant grain growth is observed during the high-pressure phase transformations (PTs) at room temperature within an hour for various materials. However, no existing theory explains this phenomenon since nanocrystals do not grow at room temperature even over a time span of several years because of slow diffusion. Here, we suggest a multistep mechanism for the grain growth during $α\rightarrowω$ PT in Zr. Phase interfaces and grain boundaries (GBs) coincide and move together under the action of a combined thermodynamic driving forces. Several intermediate steps for such motion are suggested and justified kinetically. Nonhydrostatic stresses due to volume reduction in the growing $ω$ grain promote continuous growth of the existing $ω$ grain instead of a new nucleation at other GBs. In situ synchrotron Laue diffraction experiments confirm the main predictions of the theory. The suggested mechanism provides a new insight into synergistic interaction between PTs and microstructure evolution.
Modulation of the grain boundary properties in thermoelectric materials that have thermally activated electrical conductivity is crucial in order to achieve high performance at low temperatures. In this work, we show directly that the modulation of the potential barrier at the grain boundaries in perovskite SrTiO3 changes the low-temperature dependency of the bulk material's electrical conductivity. By sintering samples in a reducing environment of increasing strength, we produced La0.08Sr0.9TiO3 (LSTO) ceramics that gradually change their electrical conductivity behavior from thermally activa…
Plasticity in body-centred cubic (BCC) metals, including dislocation interactions at grain boundaries, is much less understood than in face-centred cubic (FCC) metals. At low temperatures additional resistance to dislocation motion due to the Peierls barrier becomes important, which increases the complexity of plasticity. Iron-silicon steel is an interesting, model BCC material since the evolution of the dislocation structure in specifically-oriented grains and at particular grain boundaries have far-reaching effects not only on the deformation behaviour but also on the magnetic properties, wh…
We examine room-temperature magnetic relaxation in polycrystalline Fe films. Out-of-plane ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) measurements reveal Gilbert damping parameters of $\approx$ 0.0024 for Fe films with thicknesses of 4-25 nm, regardless of their microstructural properties. The remarkable invariance with film microstructure strongly suggests that intrinsic Gilbert damping in polycrystalline metals at room temperature is a local property of nanoscale crystal grains, with limited impact from grain boundaries and film roughness. By contrast, the in-plane FMR linewidths of the Fe films exhibit d…

It has been recently revealed that strontium titanate (SrTiO$_3$) displays persistent photoconductivity with unique characteristics: it occurs at room temperature and lasts over a very long period of time. Illumination of SrTiO$_3$ crystals at room temperature with sub-bandgap light reduces the electrical resistance by three orders of magnitude and persists for weeks or longer (Tarun ${\it et\: al.}$, Phys. Rev. Lett. ${\bf 111}$, 187403 (2013)). Experiments indicate that oxygen vacancy and hydrogen play important roles, yet the microscopic mechanism responsible for this remarkable effect has …
This work demonstrates the development of a strong and ductile medium entropy alloy by employing conventional alloying and thermomechanical processing to induce partial recrystallization (PR) and precipitation strengthening in the microstructure. The combined usage of electron microscopy and atom probe tomography reveals the sequence of microstructural evolution during the process. First, the cold working of homogenized alloy resulted in a highly deformed microstructure. On annealing at 700°C, B2 ordered precipitates heterogeneously nucleate on the highly misoriented sites. These B2 promotes p…
From the phase diagram as proposed by Lei et.al., [J. App. Phys 101, 084105 (2007)] a $BaSn_{0.15}Ti_{0.85}O_{3}$ is chosen showing a diffuse phase transition between cubic to rhombohedral (C-R) near room temperature. Dielectric analysis confirms a phase transition near room temperature ($T_{C}$ $\approx$ 290 K) and also frequency dispersion in dielectric constant is observed towards low temperature. Polarization and first-order reversal curves (FORC) suggest that the system is in re-entrant phase at low temperatures. Put together, all these electrical characterization results points toward th…
We investigate the strain-rate-dependent mechanical behavior and deformation mechanisms of a refractory high entropy alloy, Ti29Zr24Nb23Hf24 (at.%), with a single-phase body-centered cubic (BCC) structure. High-temperature compression tests were conducted at temperatures from 700 to 1100°C at strain rates ranging from 10-3 to 10 s-1. A sudden stress drop after yield point was observed at higher temperatures and lower strain rates with the Zener-Holloman parameter, lnZ, in the range of 17.2-20.7. Such a softening behavior can be related to the interaction of dislocations with short-range cluste…
Grain boundary ferromagnetism in vanadium-doped In$_2$O$_3$ thin films
室温铁磁性在In $_2$ O $_3 thin films doped with 5 at.% vanadium, prepared by pulsed laser deposition at substrate temperatures ranging from 300 to 600 $ \,^{ \circ }{ \rm C} $. X-ray absorption fine structure measurement indicated that vanadium was substitutionally dissolved in the In$ _2 $O$ _3$主晶格中观察到,从而排除了钒化合物第二相的存在。基于SQUID磁强计和磁性圆二色性的磁性测量证实了磁性在晶界处,也在晶粒中。整体磁化源于晶粒和晶界之间的竞争效应。
Can doping graphite trigger room temperature superconductivity? Evidence for granular high-temperature superconductivity in water-treated graphite powder
The phase behavior of grain boundaries can have a strong influence on interfacial properties. Little is known about the emergence of grain boundary phases in elemental metal systems and how they transform. Here, we observe the nanoscale patterning of a grain boundary by two alternating grain boundary phases with distinct atomic structures in elemental copper by atomic resolution imaging. The same grain boundary phases are found by grain boundary structure search indicating a first-order transformation. Finite temperature atomistic simulations reveal a congruent, diffusionless transition betwee…
Hexagonal metals have anisotropic coefficients of thermal expansion causing grain-level internal stresses during heating. High energy x-ray diffraction microscopy, a non-destructive, in situ, micromechanical and microstructural characterization technique, has been used to determine the anisotropic coefficients of thermal expansion (CTEs) for Ti-7Al. Two samples of polycrystalline $α$-phase Ti-7Al were continuously heated from room temperature to 850 $^\circ$C while far-field HEDM scans were collected. The results showed a change in the ratio of the CTEs in the 'a' and 'c' directions which expl…

Fractional composition of large crystallite grains: a unique microstructural parameter to explain conduction behavior in single phase undoped microcrystalline silicon
In this manuscript, we report room temperature structural, microstructural, optical, dielectric, and magnetic properties of CuO and Cu0.995La0.005 ceramics, synthesized by solid-state reaction method. La doping in CuO leads to the evolution of compact and dense microstructure with reduced porosity. Due to noticeable differences in the ionic radii of, La doping creates vacancy defects which induce considerable strain in the CuO lattice resulting in a reduction in the lattice parameters and cell volume. However, both ceramics processes a similar monoclinic structure with the C2/c space group. De…

The impact of porosity, structural defects and boundary scattering on thermal properties of the nanocrystalline Gd2Ti2O7 fabricated by spark plasma sintering followed by high energy ball milling has been investigated. The thermal conductivity has been measured in the temperature range from room temperature to 900 C using laser flash apparatus (LFA), and results were discussed by including seve…
