We call a pair of distinct prime powers $(q_1,q_2) = (p_1^{a_1},p_2^{a_2})$ a Hasse pair if $|\sqrt{q_1}-\sqrt{q_2}| \leq 1$. For such pairs, we study the relation between the set $\mathcal{E}_1$ of isomorphism classes of elliptic curves defined over $\mathbb{F}_{q_1}$ with $q_2$ points, and the set $\mathcal{E}_2$ of isomorphism classes of elliptic curves over $\mathbb{F}_{q_2}$ with $q_1$ points. When both families $\mathcal{E}_i$ contain only ordinary elliptic curves, we prove that their isogeny graphs are isomorphic. When supersingular curves are involved, we describe which curves might belong to these sets. We also show that if both the $q_i$'s are odd and $\mathcal{E}_1 \cup \mathcal{E}_2 \neq \emptyset$, then $\mathcal{E}_1 \cup \mathcal{E}_2$ always contains an ordinary elliptic curve. Conversely, if $q_1$ is even, then $\mathcal{E}_1 \cup \mathcal{E}_2$ may contain only supersingular curves precisely when $q_2$ is a given power of a Fermat or a Mersenne prime. In the case of odd Hasse pairs, we could not rule out the possibility of an empty union $\mathcal{E}_1 \cup \mathcal{E}_2$, but we give necessary conditions for such a case to exist. In an appendix, Moree and Sofos consider how frequently Hasse pairs occur using analytic number theory, making a connection with Andrica's conjecture on the difference between consecutive primes.
We prove a Hasse principle for solving equations of the form ax+by+cz=0 where x, y, z belong to a given finite index subgroup of the multiplicative group of rational numbers. From this we deduce a Hasse principle for diagonal curves over fields of algebraic numbers with finitely generated Galois group.
In this paper, we obtain an unconditional density theorem concerning the low-lying zeros of Hasse-Weil L-functions for a family of elliptic curves. From this together with the Riemann hypothesis for these L-functions, we infer the majorant of 27/14 (which is strictly less than 2) for the average rank of the elliptic curves in the family under consideration. This upper bound for the average rank enables us to deduce that, under the same assumption, a positive proportion of elliptic curves have algebraic ranks equaling their analytic ranks and finite Tate-Shafarevic group. Statements of this fla…
We present an algorithm that computes the Hasse-Witt matrix of given hyperelliptic curve over Q at all primes of good reduction up to a given bound N. It is simpler and faster than the previous algorithm developed by the authors.
Let $D > 546$ be the discriminant of an indefinite rational quaternion algebra. We show that there are infinitely many imaginary quadratic fields $l/\mathbb Q$ such that the twist of the Shimura curve $X^D$ by the main Atkin-Lehner involution $w_D$ and $l/\mathbb Q$ violates the Hasse Principle over $\mathbb Q$.
Conditionally on the $abc$ conjecture, we generalize previous work of Clark and the author to show that a superelliptic curve $C: y^n = f(x)$ of sufficiently high genus has infinitely many twists violating the Hasse Principle if and only if $f(x)$ has no $\mathbb Q$-rational roots. We also show unconditionally that a curve defined by $C: y^{pN}=f(x)$ has infinitely many twists violating the Hasse Principle over any number field $k$ such that $k$ contains the $p$th roots of unity and $f(x)$ has no $k$-rational roots.
In response to a question of B. Poonen, we exhibit for each global field k an algebraic curve over k which violates the Hasse Principle. In fact we can find such examples among Atkin-Lehner twists of certain elliptic modular curves and -- in positive characteristic -- Drinfeld modular curves. Our main tool is a refinement of the "Twist Anti-Hasse Principle" (TAHP). We also use TAHP to construct further Hasse Principle violations, for instance among curves over any number field of any given genus g which is at least 2.
We present an efficient algorithm to compute the Hasse-Witt matrix of a hyperelliptic curve C/Q modulo all primes of good reduction up to a given bound N, based on the average polynomial-time algorithm recently introduced by Harvey. An implementation for hyperelliptic curves of genus 2 and 3 is more than an order of magnitude faster than alternative methods for N = 2^26.
In $2000$, Colliot-Thélène and Poonen showed how to construct algebraic families of genus one curves violating the Hasse principle. Poonen explicitly constructed an algebraic family of genus one cubic curves violating the Hasse principle using the general method developed by Colliot-Thélène and himself. The main result in this paper generalizes the result of Colliot-Thélène and Poonen to arbitrarily high genus hyperelliptic curves. More precisely, for $n > 5$ and $n \not\equiv 0 \pmod{4}$, we show that there is an algebraic family of hyperelliptic curves of genus $n$ that is counterexamples to…
The corresponding Hasse-Weil bound was a major breakthrough in history of mathematics. It has found many applications in mathematics, coding theory and theoretical computer science. In general, the Hasse-Weil bound is tight and cannot be improved. However, the Hasse-Weil bound is no longer tight when it is applied to some specific classes of curves. One of the examples where the Hasse-Weil bound is not tight is the family of Artin-Schreier curves. Due to various applications of Artin-Schreier curves to coding, cryptography and theoretical computer science, researchers have made great effort to…
Igusa noted that the Hasse invariant of the Legendre family of elliptic curves over a finite field of odd characteristic is a solution mod $p$ of a Gaussian hypergeometric equation. We show that any family of exponential sums over a finite field has a Hasse invariant which is a sum of products of mod $p$ solutions of $A$-hypergeometric systems.
We show how to construct counter-examples to the Hasse principle over the field of rational numbers on Atkin-Lehner quotients of Shimura curves and on twisted forms of Shimura curves by Atkin-Lehner involutions. A particular example is the quotient of the Shimura curve X attached to the indefinite rational quaternion algebra of discriminant 23*107 by the Atkin-Lehner involution w107. The quadratic twist of X by Q(sqrt{-23}) with respect to this involution is also a counter-example to the Hasse principle over Q.
We prove that for any t in Q, the curve 5 x^3 + 9 y^3 + 10 z^3 + 12((t^12-t^4-1)/(t^12-t^8-1))^3 (x+y+z)^3 = 0 in P^2 is a genus 1 curve violating the Hasse principle. An explicit Weierstrass model for its Jacobian E_t is given. The Shafarevich-Tate group of each E_t contains a subgroup isomorphic to Z/3 x Z/3.
In a series of articles published in the C.R. Paris more than a century ago, T. Pépin announced a list of ``theorems'' concerning the solvability of diophantine equations of the type $ax^4 + by^4 = z^2$. In this article, we show how to prove these claims using the structure of 2-class groups of imaginary quadratic number fields. We will also look at a few related results (including FLT for $n = 7$) from a modern point of view.
Given an algebraic curve C/Q having points everywhere locally and endowed with a suitable involution, we show that there exists a positive density family of prime quadratic twists of C violating the Hasse principle. The result applies in particular to w_N-Atkin-Lehner twists of most modular curves X_0(N) and to w_p-Atkin-Lehner twists of certain Shimura curves X^{D+}.
Let C be an algebraic curve defined over a number field K, of positive genus and without K-rational points. We conjecture that there exists some extension field L over which C violates the Hasse principle, i.e., has points everywhere locally but not globally. We show that our conjecture holds for all but finitely many Shimura curves of the form X^D_0(N)_{/Q} or X^D_1(N)_{/Q}, where D > 1 and N are coprime squarefree positive integers. The proof uses a variation on a theorem of Frey, a gonality bound of Abramovich, and an analysis of local points of small degree.
A generalized Mordell curve of degree $n \ge 3$ over $\bQ$ is the smooth projective model of the affine curve of the form $Az^2 = Bx^n + C$, where $A, B, C$ are nonzero integers. A generalized Fermat curve of signature $(n, n, n)$ with $n \ge 3$ over $\bQ$ is the smooth projective curve of the form $Ax^n + By^n + Cz^n = 0$ for some nonzero integers $A, B, C$. In this paper, we show that for each prime $p$ with $p \equiv 1 \pmod{8}$ and $p \equiv 2 \pmod{3}$, there exists a threefold $\cX_p \subseteq \bP^6$ such that certain rational points on $\cX_p$ produce infinite families of non-isomorphic…
The Hasse-Weil bound is a deep result in mathematics and has found wide applications in mathematics, theoretical computer science, information theory etc. In general, the bound is tight and cannot be improved. However, for some special families of curves the bound could be improved substantially. In this paper, we focus on the Hasse-Weil bound for the curve defined by $y^p-y=f(x)$ over the finite field $\F_q$, where $p$ is the characteristic of $\F_q$. Recently, Kaufman and Lovett \cite[FOCS2011]{KL11} showed that the Hasse-Weil bound can be improved for this family of curves with $f(x)=g(x)+h…
Let $p$ be an odd prime number. In this paper, we are concerned with the behaviour of Fermat curves defined over ${\bf Q}$ given by equations $ax^p+by^p+cz^p=0$, with respect to the local-global Hasse principle. It is conjectured that there exist infinitely many Fermat curves of exponent $p$ which are counterexamples to the Hasse principle. It is a consequence of the abc-conjecture if $p\geq 5$. Using a cyclotomic approach due to H. Cohen and Chebotarev's density theorem, we obtain a partial result towards this conjecture, by proving it for $p\leq 19$.
In this paper, we present efficient algorithms for computing the number of points and the order of the Jacobian group of a superelliptic curve over finite fields of prime order p. Our method employs the Hasse-Weil bounds in conjunction with the Hasse-Witt matrix for superelliptic curves, whose entries we express in terms of multinomial coefficients. We present a fast algorithm for counting points on specific trinomial superelliptic curves and a slower, more general method for all superelliptic curves. For the first case, we reduce the problem of simplifying the entries of the Hasse-Witt matrix…
In this short note, we shall construct a certain topological family which contains all elliptic curves over Q and, as an application, show that this family provides some geometric interpretations of the Hasse-Weil L-function of an elliptic curve over Q whose Mordell-Weil group is of rank $\leq1$.
Let $k$ be a field of positive characteristic $p$. Question: Does every twisted form of $μ_p$ over $k$ occur as subgroup scheme of an elliptic curve over $k$? We show that this is true for most finite fields, for local fields and for fields of characteristic $p\leq11$. However, it is false in general for fields of characteristic $p\geq13$, which implies that there are also $p$-divisible and formal groups of height one over such fields that do not arise from elliptic curves. It also implies that the Hasse invariant does not obey the Hasse principle. Moreover, we also analyse twisted forms of $p…
We show that the distribution of elliptic curves in isogeny classes of curves with a given value of the Frobenius trace $t$ becomes close to uniform even when $t$ is averaged over very short intervals inside the Hasse-Weil interval.
We give large families of Shimura curves defined by congruence conditions, all of whose twists lack $p$-adic points for some $p$. For each such curve we give analytically large families of counterexamples to the Hasse principle via the descent (or equivalently étale Brauer-Manin) obstruction to rational points applied to étale coverings coming from the level structure. More precisely, we find infinitely many quadratic fields defined using congruence conditions such that a twist of a related Shimura curve by each of those fields violates the Hasse principle. As a minimal example, we find the tw…
We prove the Hasse-Weil inequality for genus 2 curves given by an equation of the form y^2 = f(x) with f a polynomial of degree 5, using arguments that mimic the elementary proof of the genus 1 case obtained by Yu. I. Manin in 1956.
We study a variant of the Hasse principle for finite Galois modules, allowing exceptional sets of positive density. For a Galois module whose underlying abelian group is isomorphic to $\mathbb{F}_p^{\oplus r}$ ($r \leq 2$), we show that the product of the restriction maps for places in a set of places $S$ is injective if the Dirichlet density of $S$ is strictly larger than $1 - p^{-r}$. We give applications to the local-global divisibility problem for elliptic curves and the Hasse principle for flexes on plane cubic curves.
We study the existence of rational points on modular curves of $\cal{D}$-elliptic sheaves over local fields and the structure of special fibres of these curves. We discuss some applications which include finding presentations for arithmetic groups arising from quaternion algebras, finding the equations of modular curves of $\cal{D}$-elliptic sheaves, and constructing curves violating the Hasse principle.
We use the Aubry-Perret bound for singular curves, a generalization of the Hasse-Weil bound, to prove the following curious result about rational functions over finite fields: Let $f(X),g(X)\in\Bbb F_q(X)\setminus\{0\}$ be such that $q$ is sufficiently large relative to $\text{deg}\, f$ and $\text{deg}\, g$, $f(\Bbb F_q)\subset g(\Bbb F_q\cup\{\infty\})$, and for ``most'' $a\in\Bbb F_q\cup\{\infty\}$, $|\{x\in \Bbb F_q:g(x)=g(a)\}|>(\text{deg}\, g)/2$. Then there exists $h(X)\in\Bbb F_q(X)$ such that $f(X)=g(h(X))$. A generalization to multivariate rational functions is also included.
We determine average sizes/bounds for the $2$- and $3$-Selmer groups in various families of elliptic curves with marked points, thus confirming several cases of the Poonen--Rains heuristics. As a consequence, we deduce that the average ranks of the elliptic curves in all of these families are bounded. Our proofs are uniform and make use of parametrizations involving various forms of $2 \times 2 \times 2 \times 2$ and $3 \times 3 \times 3$ matrices that we studied in a previous paper. We also deduce that $100\%$ of genus one curves of the form $y^2 = Ax^4 + Bx^2 z^2 + Cz^4$ with $A, B, C \in \m…
In a recent paper, Colliot-Thélène, Parimala and Suresh conjectured that a local-global principle holds for projective homogeneous spaces of connected linear algebraic groups over function fields of p-adic curves. In this paper, we show that the conjecture is true for a linear algebraic group whose almost simple factors of its semisimple part are isogenous to unitary groups or special unitary groups of hermitian or skew-hermitian spaces over central simple algebras with involutions. The proof implements patching techniques of Harbater, Hartmann and Krashen. As an application, we obtain a Sprin…
We give a geometric proof that Hasse principle holds for the following varieties defined over global function fields: smooth quadric hypersurfaces in odd characteristic, smooth cubic hypersurfaces of dimension at least $4$ in characteristic at least $7$, and smooth complete intersections of two quadrics of dimension at least $3$ in odd characteristics. In Appendix A we explain how to modify a previous argument of the author to prove weak approximation for cubic hypersurfaces defined over function fields of curves over algebraically closed fields of characteristic at least $7$. In Appendix B we…
Using an explicit family of plane quartic curves, we prove the existence of a genus 3 curve over any finite field of characteristic 3 whose number of rational points stays within a fixed distance from the Hasse-Weil-Serre upper bound. We also provide an intrinsic characterization of so-called Legendre elliptic curves.
The Hasse-Weil-Serre bound is improved for curves of low genera over finite fields with discriminant in {-3,-4,-7,-8,-11,-19} by studying optimal curves.
Jordan, Rotger and de Vera-Piquero proved that Shimura curves have no points rational over imaginary quadratic fields under a certain assumption. In this article, we expand their results to the case of number fields of higher degree. We also give counterexamples to the Hasse principle on Shimura curves.
We study rational points on conic bundles over elliptic curves with positive rank over a number field. We show that the etale Brauer-Manin obstruction is insufficient to explain failures of the Hasse principle for such varieties. We then further consider properties of the distribution of the set of rational points with respect to its image in the rational points of the elliptic curve. In the process, we prove results on a local-to-global principle for torsion points on elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$.
We consider the KZ differential equations over $\mathbb C$ in the case, when the hypergeometric solutions are one-dimensional integrals. We also consider the same differential equations over a finite field $\mathbb F_p$. We study the space of polynomial solutions of these differential equations over $\mathbb F_p$, constructed in a previous work by V. Schechtman and the second author. Using Hasse-Witt matrices we identify the space of these polynomial solutions over $\mathbb F_p$ with the space dual to a certain subspace of regular differentials on an associated curve. We also relate these poly…
Given an elliptic curve $E$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ we study the finite extensions $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$ of $\mathbb{F}_q$ such that the number of $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$-rational points on $E$ attains the Hasse upper bound. We obtain an upper bound on the degree $n$ for $E$ ordinary using an estimate for linear forms in logarithms, which allows us to compute the pairs of isogeny classes of such curves and degree $n$ for small $q$. Using a consequence of Schmidt's Subspace Theorem, we improve the upper bound to $n\leq 11$ for sufficiently large $q$. We also show that there are infinitely ma…
We show how the Langlands-Kottwitz method can be used to determine the local factors of the Hasse-Weil zeta-function of the modular curve at places of bad reduction. On the way, we prove a conjecture of Haines and Kottwitz in this special case.
Given an elliptic curve $E$ and a positive integer $N$, we consider the problem of counting the number of primes $p$ for which the reduction of $E$ modulo $p$ possesses exactly $N$ points over $\mathbb F_p$. On average (over a family of elliptic curves), we show bounds that are significantly better than what is trivially obtained by the Hasse bound. Under some additional hypotheses, including a conjecture concerning the short interval distribution of primes in arithmetic progressions, we obtain an asymptotic formula for the average.
Let $K$ be the fraction field of a two-dimensional henselian, excellent, equi-characteristic local domain. We prove a local-global principle for Galois cohomology with finite coefficients over $K$. We use classical machinery from étale cohomology theory, drawing upon an idea in Saito's work on two-dimensional local class field theory. This approach works equally well over the function field of a curve over an equi-characteristic henselian discrete valuation field, thereby giving a different proof of (a slightly generalized version of) a recent result of Harbater, Hartmann and Krashen. We also …
Let $X$ be a smooth projective variety over a number field, fibered over a curve, with geometrically integral fibers. We prove that, supposing the finiteness of $\sha(Jac(C))$, if the fibers over a generalised Hilbertian subset satisfy the Hasse principle (resp. weak approximation), then the Brauer-Manin obstruction coming from the base curve is the only obstruction to the Hasse principle (resp. to weak approximation) for zero-cycles of degree 1 on $X$.
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$. Let $\underline{III}(E)$ be a certain group of equivalence classes of homogeneous spaces of $E$ called its Tate-Shafarevich group. We show in this paper that this group has finite cardinality and discuss its role in the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer Conjecture. In particular, our result implies the Parity Conjecture, or the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer Conjecture modulo 2. It also removes the finiteness condition of $\underline{III}(E)$ from previous results in the literature of this subject and makes possible for some computation problems concerning th…
We show that if over some number field there exists a certain diagonal plane cubic curve that is locally solvable everywhere, but that does not have points over any cubic galois extension of the number field, then the algebraic part of the Brauer-Manin obstruction is not the only obstruction to the Hasse principle for K3 surfaces.
Fix an elliptic curve E over Q. An extremal prime for E is a prime p of good reduction such that the number of rational points on E modulo p is maximal or minimal in relation to the Hasse bound. Assuming that all the symmetric power L-functions associated to E are automorphic and satisfy the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis, we give the first non-trivial upper bounds for the number of such primes when E is a curve without complex multiplication. In order to obtain this bound, we use explicit equidistribution for the Sato-Tate measure as in the work of Rouse and Thorner (arXiv:1305.5283) and refi…
