In light of the grammar given by Ji for the $(α,β)$-Eulerian polynomials introduced by Carlitz and Scoville, we provide a labeling scheme for increasing binary trees. In this setting, we obtain a combinatorial interpretation of the $γ$-coefficients of the $α$-Eulerian polynomials in terms of forests of planted 0-1-2-plane trees, which specializes to a combinatorial interpretation of the $γ$-coefficients of the derangement polynomials in the same vein. By means of a decomposition of an increasing binary tree into a forest, we find combinatorial interpretations of the sums involving two identities of Ji, one of which can be viewed as $(α,β)$-extensions of the formulas of Petersen and Stembridge.
We study two generalizations of the gamma-expansion of Eulerian polynomials from the viewpoint of the decompositions of statistics. We first present an expansion formula of the trivariate Eulerian polynomials, which are the enumerators for the joint distribution of descents, big ascents and successions of permutations. And then, inspired by the work of Chen and Fu on the trivariate second-order Eulerian polynomials, we show the e-positivity of the multivariate k-th order Eulerian polynomials, which are the enumerators for the joint distribution of ascents, descents and j-plateaux of k-Stirling…
Maxmin trees are labeled trees with the property that each vertex is either a local maximum or a local minimum. Such trees were originally introduced by Postnikov, who gave a formula to count them and different combinatorial interpretations for their number. In this paper we generalize this construction and define tiered trees by allowing more than two classes of vertices. Tiered trees arise naturally when counting the absolutely indecomposable representations of certain quivers, and also when one enumerates torus orbits on certain homogeneous varieties. We define a notion of weight for tiered…
Delta-matroid theory is often thought of as a generalization of topological graph theory. It is well-known that an orientable embedded graph is bipartite if and only if its Petrie dual is orientable. In this paper, we first introduce the concepts of Eulerian and bipartite delta-matroids and then extend the result from embedded graphs to arbitrary binary delta-matroids. The dual of any bipartite embedded graph is Eulerian. We also extend the result from embedded graphs to the class of delta-matroids that arise as twists of binary matroids. Several related results are also obtained.
Ma-Ma-Yeh made a beautiful observation that a transformation of the grammar of Dumont instantly leads to the $γ$-positivity of the Eulerian polynomials. We notice that the transformed grammar bears a striking resemblance to the grammar for 0-1-2 increasing trees also due to Dumont. The appearance of the factor of two fits perfectly in a grammatical labeling of 0-1-2 increasing plane trees. Furthermore, the grammatical calculus is instrumental to the computation of the generating functions. This approach can be adapted to study the $e$-positivity of the trivariate second-order Eulerian polynomi…
We consider the generating polynomial of the number of rooted trees on the set $\{1,2,\dots,n\}$ counted by the number of descending edges (a parent with a greater label than a child). This polynomial is an extension of the descent generating polynomial of the set of permutations of a totally ordered $n$-set, known as the Eulerian polynomial. We show how this extension shares some of the properties of the classical one. B. Drake proved that this polynomial factors completely over the integers. From his product formula it can be concluded that this polynomial has positive coefficients in the $γ…
We present a bijective algorithm with which an arbitrary permutation decomposes canonically into elementary blocks which we call families, which are sets with a specified number of ascents and descents. We show that families, arranged in an arbitrary order in a sequence, are in bijection with permutations. The permutation decomposes canonically, by inserting parentheses, into a tree having as nodes a class of permutations which we call primitive. Primitive permutations can be assembled from very simple data. The data for the trees into which a permutation decomposes can be written in a form si…
Pondering upon the grammatical labeling of 0-1-2 increasing plane trees, we come to the realization that the grammatical labels play a role as records of chopped off leaves of the original increasing binary trees. While such an understanding is purely psychological, it does give rise to an efficient apparatus to tackle the partial $γ$-positivity of the Eulearian polynomials on multiset Stirling permutations, as long as we bear in mind the combinatorial meanings of the labels $x$ and $y$ in the Gessel representation of a $k$-Stirling permutation by means of an increasing $(k+1)$-ary tree. More …
The aim of this paper is to bring together the three objects in the title. Recall that, given a Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$, the Eulerian idempotent is a canonical projection from the enveloping algebra $U(\mathfrak{g})$ to $\mathfrak{g}$. The Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff product and the Magnus expansion can both be expressed in terms of the Eulerian idempotent, which makes it interesting to establish explicit formulas for the latter. We show how to reduce the computation of the Eulerian idempotent to the computation of a logarithm in a certain pre-Lie algebra of planar, binary, rooted trees. The p…
We introduce Eulerian maps with blocked edges as a general way to implement statistical matter models on random maps by a modification of intrinsic distances. We show how to code these dressed maps by means of mobiles, i.e. decorated trees with labeled vertices, leading to a closed system of recursion relations for their generating functions. We discuss particular solvable cases in detail, as well as various applications of our method to several statistical systems such as spanning trees on quadrangulations, mutually excluding particles on Eulerian triangulations or the Ising model on quadrang…
We give two combinatorial proofs of the fact that the number of loopless digraphs on the vertex set $[n]$ with no isolated vertices and with exactly one Eulerian tour up to a cyclic shift is $\frac{1}{2}(n-1)!C_{n}$, where $C_{n}$ denotes the $n$-th Catalan number. We construct a bijection with a set of labeled rooted plane trees and with a set of valid parenthesis arrangements.
Remixed Eulerian numbers are a polynomial $q$-deformation of Postnikov's mixed Eulerian numbers. They arose naturally in previous work by the authors concerning the permutahedral variety and subsume well-known families of polynomials such as $q$-binomial coefficients and Garsia--Remmel's $q$-hit numbers. We study their combinatorics in more depth. As polynomials in $q$, they are shown to be symmetric and unimodal. By interpreting them as computing success probabilities in a simple probabilistic process we arrive at a combinatorial interpretation involving weighted trees. By decomposing the per…
We prove several identities expressing polynomials counting permutations by various descent statistics in terms of Eulerian polynomials, extending results of Stembridge, Petersen, and Brändén. Additionally, we find $q$-exponential generating functions for $q$-analogues of these descent statistic polynomials that also keep track of the inversion number or inverse major index. We also present identities relating several of these descent statistic polynomials to refinements of type B Eulerian polynomials and flag descent polynomials by the number of negative letters of a signed permutation. Our m…
The volume and the number of lattice points of the permutohedron P_n are given by certain multivariate polynomials that have remarkable combinatorial properties. We give several different formulas for these polynomials. We also study a more general class of polytopes that includes the permutohedron, the associahedron, the cyclohedron, the Pitman-Stanley polytope, and various generalized associahedra related to wonderful compactifications of De Concini-Procesi. These polytopes are constructed as Minkowski sums of simplices. We calculate their volumes and describe their combinatorial structure. …
We introduce bijections between families of rooted maps with unfixed genus and families of so-called blossoming trees endowed with an arbitrary forward matching of their leaves. We first focus on Eulerian maps with controlled vertex degrees. The mapping from blossoming trees to maps is a generalization to unfixed genus of Schaeffer's closing construction for planar Eulerian maps. The inverse mapping relies on the existence of canonical orientations which allow to equip the maps with canonical spanning trees, as proved by Bernardi. Our bijection gives in particular (here in the Eulerian case) a…
Weights of permutations were originally introduced by Dugan, Glennon, Gunnells, and Steingrímsson (Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A 164:24-49, 2019) in their study of the combinatorics of tiered trees. Given a permutation $σ$ viewed as a sequence of integers, computing the weight of $σ$ involves recursively counting descents of certain subpermutations of $σ$. Using this weight function, one can define a $q$-analog $E_n(x,q)$ of the Eulerian polynomials. We prove two main results regarding weights of permutations and the polynomials $E_n(x,q)$. First, we show that the coefficients of $…
For a poset whose Hasse diagram is a rooted plane forest $F$, we consider the corresponding tree descent polynomial $A_F(q)$, which is a generating function of the number of descents of the labelings of $F$. When the forest is a path, $A_F(q)$ specializes to the classical Eulerian polynomial. We prove that the coefficient sequence of $A_F(q)$ is unimodal and that if $\{T_{n}\}$ is a sequence of trees with $|T_{n}| = n$ and maximal down degree $D_{n} = O(n^{0.5-ε})$ then the number of descents in a labeling of $T_{n}$ is asymptotically normal.
We give a new combinatorial interpretation of the stationary distribution of the (partially) asymmetric exclusion process on a finite number of sites in terms of decorated alternative trees and colored permutations. The corresponding expressions of the multivariate partition functions are then related to multivariate generalizations of Eulerian polynomials for colored permutations considered recently by N. Williams and the third author, and others. We also discuss stability-- and negative dependence properties satisfied by the partition functions.
In this short note, we first present a simple bijection between binary trees and colored ternary trees and then derive a new identity related to generalized Catalan numbers.
In this paper we consider the enumeration of binary trees avoiding non-contiguous binary tree patterns. We begin by computing closed formulas for the number of trees avoiding a single binary tree pattern with 4 or fewer leaves and compare these results to analogous work for contiguous tree patterns. Next, we give an explicit generating function that counts binary trees avoiding a single non-contiguous tree pattern according to number of leaves. In addition, we enumerate binary trees that simultaneously avoid more than one tree pattern. Finally, we explore connections between pattern-avoiding t…
Let $Ω_n$ be the family of binary trees on $n$ vertices obtained by identifying the root of an rgood binary tree with a vertex of maximum eccentricity of a binary caterpillar. In the paper titled "On different middle parts of a tree (The electronic journal of combinatorics, 25 (2018), no. 3, paper 3.17, 32 pp)", Smith et al. conjectured that among all binary trees on $n$ vertices the pairwise distance between any two of center, centroid and subtree core is maximized by some member of the family $Ω_n$. We first obtain the rooted binary tree which minimizes the number of root containing subtrees…
In this paper, we present a new method for determining the optimal pebbling number of a complete binary tree. This method reveals a curious connection between the optimal pebbling numbers of complete binary trees and the Conolly-Fox sequence, a type of meta-Fibonacci sequence.
We introduce a monoid structure on a certain set of labelled binary trees, by a process similar to the construction of the plactic monoid. This leads to a new interpretation of the algebra of planar binary trees of Loday-Ronco.
Hex-trees are identified as a particular instance of weighted unary-binary trees. The Horton-Strahler numbers of these objects are revisited, and, thanks to a substitution that is not immediately intuitive, explicit results are possible. They are augmented by asymptotic evaluations as well. Furthermore, marked ordered trees (in bijection to skew Dyck paths) are investigated, followed 3-Motzkin paths and multi-edge trees. The underlying theme is sequence A002212 in the Encyclopedia of integer sequences.
We show that the set of balanced binary trees is closed by interval in the Tamari lattice. We establish that the intervals [T, T'] where T and T' are balanced binary trees are isomorphic as posets to a hypercube. We introduce synchronous grammars that allow to generate tree-like structures and obtain fixed-point functional equations to enumerate these. We also introduce imbalance tree patterns and show that they can be used to describe some sets of balanced binary trees that play a particular role in the Tamari lattice. Finally, we investigate other families of binary trees that are also close…
We develop combinatorial methods for computing the rotation distance between binary trees, i.e., equivalently, the flip distance between triangulations of a polygon. As an application, we prove that, for each n, there exist size n trees at distance 2n - O(sqrt(n)).
The theme of this article is the algebraic combinatorics of leaf-labeled rooted binary trees and forests of such trees. The structure of a Hopf operad is defined on the vector spaces spanned by forests of leaf-labeled, rooted, binary trees. An explicit formula for the coproduct and its dual product is given, using a poset on forests.
We show that the set of balanced binary trees is closed by interval in the Tamari lattice. We establish that the intervals [T0, T1] where T0 and T1 are balanced trees are isomorphic as posets to a hypercube. We introduce tree patterns and synchronous grammars to get a functional equation of the generating series enumerating balanced tree intervals.
Some posets of binary leaf-labeled trees are shown to be supersolvable lattices and explicit EL-labelings are given. Their characteristic polynomials are computed, recovering their known factorization in a different way.
We discover another one-parameter generalization of Postnikov's hook length formula for binary trees. The particularity of our formula is that the hook length $h_v$ appears as an exponent. As an application, we derive another simple hook length formula for binary trees when the underlying parameter takes the value 1/2.
In analogy to other concepts of a similar nature, we define the inducibility of a rooted binary tree. Given a fixed rooted binary tree $B$ with $k$ leaves, we let $γ(B,T)$ be the proportion of all subsets of $k$ leaves in $T$ that induce a tree isomorphic to $B$. The inducibility of $B$ is $\limsup_{|T| \to \infty} γ(B,T)$. We determine the inducibility in some special cases, show that every binary tree has positive inducibility and prove that caterpillars are the only binary trees with inducibility $1$. We also formulate some open problems and conjectures on the inducibility. Finally, we pres…
This paper considers the enumeration of trees avoiding a contiguous pattern. We provide an algorithm for computing the generating function that counts n-leaf binary trees avoiding a given binary tree pattern t. Equipped with this counting mechanism, we study the analogue of Wilf equivalence in which two tree patterns are equivalent if the respective n-leaf trees that avoid them are equinumerous. We investigate the equivalence classes combinatorially. Toward establishing bijective proofs of tree pattern equivalence, we develop a general method of restructuring trees that conjecturally succeeds …
It is proved that the average number of segments on the right branch of a binary tree of size n tends to 3 as n tends to $\infty$. Also the fraction of trees with k segments on the right branch from all trees of size n tends to $\frac{k}{2^{k+1}}$ as n tends to $\infty$
A classical problem in phylogenetic tree analysis is to decide whether there is a phylogenetic tree $T$ that contains all information of a given collection $\cP$ of phylogenetic trees. If the answer is "yes" we say that $\cP$ is compatible and $T$ displays $\cP$. This decision problem is NP-complete even if all input trees are quartets, that is binary trees with exactly four leaves. In this paper, we prove a sufficient condition for a set of binary phylogenetic trees to be compatible. That result is used to give a short and self-contained proof of the known characterization of quartet sets of …
We take a global view at substitution invariant Sturmian sequences. We show that homogeneous substitution invariant Sturmian sequences $s_{α,α}$ can be indexed by two binary trees, associated directly to Johannes Kepler's tree of harmonic fractions from 1619. We obtain similar results for the inhomogeneous sequences $s_{α,1-α}$ and $s_{α,0}$.
We show that for every $k$, the probability that a randomly selected vertex of a random binary search tree on $n$ nodes is at distance $k-1$ from the closest leaf converges to a rational constant $c_k$ as $n$ goes to infinity.
An earlier characterization of topologically ordered (lexicographic) path-length sequences of binary trees is reformulated in terms of an integrality condition on a scaled Kraft sum of certain subsequences (full segments, or islands). The scaled Kraft sum is seen to count the set of ancestors at a certain level of a set of topologically consecutive leaves is a binary tree.
We introduce a monoid structure on the set of binary search trees, by a process very similar to the construction of the plactic monoid, the Robinson-Schensted insertion being replaced by the binary search tree insertion. This leads to a new construction of the algebra of Planar Binary Trees of Loday-Ronco, defining it in the same way as Non-Commutative Symmetric Functions and Free Symmetric Functions. We briefly explain how the main known properties of the Loday-Ronco algebra can be described and proved with this combinatorial point of view, and then discuss it from a representation theoretica…
The existence of greatest lower bounds in the imbalance order of path-length sequences of binary trees is seen to be a consequence of a joint monotonicity property of the greater and lower expension operations. Path length sequences that are join-irreducible in the imbalance lattice are characterized.
We study the set of NBC sets (no broken circuit sets) of the Linial arrangement and deduce a constructive bijection to the set of local binary search trees. We then generalize this construction to two families of Linial type arrangements for which the bijections are with some $k$-ary labelled trees that we introduce for this purpose.
In this paper, we shall construct a bijection between rook placements on double staircases (introduced by Josuat-Vergès in 2017) and increasing binary trees. We introduce two subclasses of rook placements on double staircases, which we call left and right-aligned rook placements. We show that their enumeration, while keeping track of a certain statistic, gives the $γ$-vectors of the Eulerian polynomials. We conclude with a discussion on a different bijection that fits in very well with our main bijection, and another discussion on generalising our main bijection. Our main bijection is a specia…
This note provide bijective proofs of two combinatorial identities involving generalized Catalan number $C_{m,5}(n)={m\over 5n+m}{5n+m\choose n}$ recently proposed by Sun.
Binary rooted trees, both in the ordered and in the un-ordered case, are well studied structures in the field of combinatorics. The aim of this work is to study particular patterns in these classes of trees. We consider completely unbalanced subtrees, where unbalancing is measured according to the so-called Colless's index. The size of the biggest unbalanced subtree becomes then a new parameter with respect to which we find several enumerations.
A reformulation of the path length of binary search trees is given in terms of permutations, allowing to extend the definition to the instance of words, where the letters are obtained by independent geometric random variables (with parameter q). In this way, expressions for expectation and variance are obtained which in the limit for $q\to1$ are the classical expressions.
One wishes to remove $k-1$ edges of a vertex-weighted tree $T$ such that the weights of the $k$ induced connected components are approximately the same. How well can one do it ? In this paper, we investigate such $k$-separator for {\em quasi-binary} trees. We show that, under certain conditions on the total weight of the tree, a particular $k$-separator can be constructed such that the smallest (respectively the largest) weighted component is lower (respectively upper) bounded. Examples showing optimality for the lower bound are also given.
The register function (or Horton-Strahler number) of a binary tree is a well-known combinatorial parameter. We study a reduction procedure for binary trees which offers a new interpretation for the register function as the maximal number of reductions that can be applied to a given tree. In particular, the precise asymptotic behavior of the number of certain substructures ("branches") that occur when reducing a tree repeatedly is determined. In the same manner we introduce a reduction for simple two-dimensional lattice paths from which a complexity measure similar to the register function can …
We look at a family of meta-Fibonacci sequences which arise in studying the number of leaves at the largest level in certain infinite sequences of binary trees, restricted compositions of an integer, and binary compact codes. For this family of meta-Fibonacci sequences and two families of related sequences we derive ordinary generating functions and recurrence relations. Included in these families of sequences are several well-known sequences in the Online Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences (OEIS).
