We show that if there are conserved flavor symmetries then some properties of a monopole can depend on $θ$ even when a fermion is massless. The quantized nature of global symmetries and the fractional nature of the Witten effect can lead to interesting structure. Seen from another point of view, aside from possibly breaking baryon and lepton flavor symmetries (the Callan-Rubakov effect), monopole boundary conditions can also break the axial symmetry that otherwise could have been used to remove $θ$ from the Lagrangian. As an example, in a toy model, we calculate the $θ$ dependence of the mass of the monopole and properties of the non-zero charge density surrounding the monopole.
Dynamics of four-dimensional massless fields of all spins is formulated in the Siegel space of complex $4\times 4$ symmetric matrices. It is shown that the unfolded equations of free massless fields, that have a form of multidimensional Schrodinger equations, naturally distinguish between positive- and negative-frequency solutions of relativistic field equations, i.e. particles and antiparticles. Multidimensional Riemann theta functions are shown to solve massless field equations in the Siegel space. We establish the correspondence between conserved higher-spin currents in four-dimensional Min…
In this talk I present recent results on Lorentz covariant correlation functions $\langle q(p_1)\overline{q}(p_2)\rangle$ on the cone $p^2=0$. In particular, chiral symmetry breaking terms are constructed which resemble fermionic 2--point functions of 2--D CFT up to a scalar factor.
Vacuum expectation values of products of local bilinears $\barψψ$ are computed in massless $QED_2$ at finite density. It is shown that chiral condensates exhibit an oscillatory inhomogeneous behaviour depending on the chemical potential. The use of a path-integral approach clarifies the connection of this phenomenon with the topological structure of the theory.
Relationships between gauge, conformal and discrete symmetries in particle physics are analysed. We study also the effect of the electroweak mixing on the cancellation of SU(2) anomalous actions. It is shown that the relation theta_{W} = 2(theta_{12}+theta_{23}+theta_{13}) between the Weinberg angle and the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa angles should be satisfied and this effect is completely defined by the mixing of Dirac fermions. We compare two mechanisms of the spontaneous breaking of gauge symmetry, discuss the renormalizability of theories, and argue for the existence of the Majorana fermion…
It is shown that in the scheme with a rotating fermion mass matrix (i.e. one with a scale-dependent orientation in generation space) suggested earlier for explaining fermion mixing and mass hierarchy, the theta-angle term in the QCD action of topological origin can be eliminated by chiral transformations, while giving still nonzero masses to all quarks. Instead, the effects of such transformations get transmitted by the rotation to the CKM matrix as the KM phase giving, for $θ$ of order unity, a Jarlskog invariant typically of order $10^{-5}$ as experimentally observed. Strong and weak CP viol…
We extend the ${\cal O}(α_s^5)$ result of the analytic calculation of the quark mass anomalous dimension in pQCD [1] to the case of a generic gauge group. We present explicit formulas which express the relevant renormalization constants in terms of four-loop massless propagators. We also use our result to shed new light on the old puzzle of the absence of even zetas in results of perturbative calculations for a class of physical observables.
The infrared behaviour of the gauge-invariant dressed fermion propagator in massless QED_3 is discussed for three choices of dressing. It is found that only the propagator with the isotropic (in three Euclidean dimensions) choice of dressing is acceptable as the physical fermion propagator. It is explained that the negative anomalous dimension of this physical fermion does not contradict any field-theoretical requirement.
Theta identities on genus g Riemann surfaces which decompose simple products of fermion correlation functions with a constraint on their variables are considered. This type of theta identities is, in a sense, dual to Fay s formula, by which it is possible to sum over spin structures of certain part of superstring amplitudes in NSR formalism without using Fay s formula nor Riemann s theta formula in much simpler, more transparent way. Also, such identities will help to cast correlation functions among arbitrary numbers of Kac-Moody currents in a closed form. As for genus 1, the identities are r…
Using the Zumino identities it is shown that in a class of non-local gauges, massless QED_3 has an infrared behaviour of a conformal field theory with a continuously varying anomalous dimension of the fermion. In the usual Lorentz gauge, the fermion propagator falls off exponentially for a large separation, but this apparent fermion mass is a gauge artifact.
Computation of Yukawa couplings, determining superpotentials as well as the Kähler metric, with oblique (non-commuting) fluxes in magnetized brane constructions is an interesting unresolved issue, in view of the importance of such fluxes for obtaining phenomenologically viable models. In order to perform this task, fermion (scalar) wavefunctions on toroidally compactified spaces are presented for general fluxes, parameterized by Hermitian matrices with eigenvalues of arbitrary signatures. We also give explicit mappings among fermion wavefunctions, of different internal chiralities on the tori,…
A frame-like action for massless mixed-symmetry fermionic fields in Minkowski space is constructed. The action is uniquely determined by gauge invariance.
We find that the recently developed kinetic theories with spin for massive and massless fermions are smoothly connected. By introducing a reference-frame vector, we decompose the dipole-moment tensor into electric and magnetic dipole moments. We show that the axial-vector component of the Wigner function contains a contribution from the transverse magnetic dipole moment which accounts for the transverse spin degree of freedom (DOF) and vanishes smoothly in the massless limit. As a result, the kinetic equations, describing four DOF for massive fermions, becomes smoothly the chiral kinetic equat…
We calculate the three- and four-loop corrections to the massless fermion propagator in three-dimensional quenched Quantum Electrodynamics with four-component fermions. The three-loop correction is finite and gauge invariant but the four-loop one has singularities except in the Feynman gauge where it is also finite. Our results explicitly show that, up to four loops, gauge-dependent terms are completely determined by lower order ones in agreement with the Landau-Khalatnikov-Fradkin transformation.
We study the bosonization of massless fermions in three-dimensional space-time. Using the path-integral approach as well as the operator formalism, we investigate new duality relations between fermionic and bosonic theories. In particular, we show that a theory of massless fermions is dual to three different, but equivalent bosonic theories which are quadratic in the bosonic fields: a non-local Maxwell- Chern-Simons-type theory, a non-local self-dual-type vector theory, and a local free massless bosonic theory. The equivalence is proven at the level of current correlation functions and current…
There exist chiral gauge models in two dimensions that have massless composite fermions. Two examples are presented and it is suggested that they be accepted as benchmark test-cases for generic proposals of non-perturbatively regulating chiral gauge theories in any dimension. We apply the overlap to the simpler of the two benchmarks and present the results of a numerical simulation of modest size.
Massless fermions on scalar domain walls are considered. Two walls are established, corresponding to 5-dimensional static spacetime asymptotically Anti de-Sitter, differentiated by the symmetry around the wall, and in each case massless chiral fermions are coupled to the wall by a Yukawa term. We identify a normalizable state associated to the migration of fermions toward the edge of the wall. This effect is generated by the competition between the Yukawa interaction and the gravitational repulsion on the matter fields, and it is independent of the $Z_2$ symmetry of the wall.
Using Berkovits' Superstring Filed Theory action including the Ramond sector, we calculate the contribution to this action coming from the tachyon and massless fermions from both $GSO$ sectors. Some features of the action are discussed in the end, settling the ground for a more systematic treatment of spacetime fermions in superstring field theory.
We point out interesting effects of additional massless Dirac fermions with N_F colors upon the critical behavior of the Ginzburg-Landau model. For increasing N_F, the model is driven into the type II regime of superconductivity. The critical exponents are given as a function of N_F.
We consider a geometric approach to field theory in which torsion is present in the matter field equations, and we develop the consequences of the torsion-spin coupling for a pair of single-handed spinors; we show these interactions to have the structure of a flavour-changing neutral current giving rise to a mixing for two massless fermion fields: as torsional interactions for semispinors entail mixing for massless fermions we speculate that this mechanism could be responsible for oscillations of neutrinos.
Instability in the scalar channel of the fermion-antifermion scattering amplitude in massless QED_3 for number of flavours less than the critical value 128/3π^2 is demonstrated. The anomalous dimensions of gauge-invariant composite operators are determined to O(1/N). Exponentiation of the O(1/N) infrared logarithm is explicitly demonstrated by evaluating the contribution of the ladder diagrams.
We present the first study of the discrete $β$-function of the $ SU(3) $ gauge theory with 10 massless domain-wall fermions in the fundamental representation. The renormalized coupling is obtained by the finite-volume gradient flow scheme, and the discrete $β$-function is extrapolated to the continuum limit by the step-scaling method. Our result of the discrete $β$-function (with $ s = 2 $) suggests that this theory possesses an infrared fixed point around $ g_c^2 \sim 7.0 $ for $ c = \sqrt{8t}/L = 0.3 $.
We introduce the chemical potential in a system of massless fermions in a bag by impossing boundary conditions in the Euclidean time direction. We express the fermionic mean number in terms of a functional trace involving the Green's function of the boundary value problem, which we study analytically. Numerical evaluations are made, and an application to a simple hadron model is discussed.
We investigate the 5D massless fermionic fields within the standing wave braneworld model. We show that in the case of increasing warp factor there exist localized left spinor field zero modes on the brane, while right fermion wave functions are not normalizable.
We study the equations of motion of fermions in type IIB supergravity in the context of the gauge/gravity correspondence. The main motivation is the search for normalizable fermionic zero modes in such backgrounds, to be interpreted as composite massless fermions in the dual theory. We specialize to backgrounds characterized by a constant dilaton and a self-dual three-form. In the specific case of the Klebanov--Strassler solution we construct explicitly the fermionic superpartner of the Goldstone mode associated with the broken baryonic symmetry. The fermionic equations could also be used to s…
For massless quenched QED in three dimensions, we evaluate a non-perturbative expression for the fermion propagator which agrees with its two loop perturbative expansion in the weak coupling regime. This calculation is carried out by making use of the Landau-Khalatnikov-Fradkin transformations. Any improved construction of the fermion-boson vertex must make sure that the solution of the Schwinger-Dyson equation for the fermion propagator reproduces this result. For two different gauges, we plot the fermion propagator against momentum. We then make a comparison with a similar plot, using the ea…
The coadjoint orbit method is applied to the construction of Hamiltonian dynamics of massless particles of arbitrary helicity. The unusual transformation properties of canonical variables are interpreted in terms of nonlinear realizations of Poincare group. The action principle is formulated in terms of new space-time variables with standard transformation properties.
We study the gauge-covariance of the massless fermion propagator in reduced Quantum Electrodynamics (QED). Starting from its value in some gauge, we evaluate an all order expression for it in another gauge by means of the Landau-Khalatnikov-Fradkin transformation. We find that the weak coupling expansions thus derived are in perfect agreement with the exact calculations. We also prove that the fermion anomalous dimension of reduced QED is gauge invariant to all orders of perturbation theory except for the first one.
We study the consequences of including parity preserving matter for the effective dual theory corresponding to compact QED_3; in particular we focus on the effect of that contribution on the confinement-deconfinement properties of the system. To that end, we compare two recent proposals when massless fermions are included, both based on an effective anomalous dual model, but having global and local Z_2 symmetries, respectively. We present a detailed analysis to show that while for large mass fermions the global Z_2 symmetry is preferred, in the massless fermion case the local Z_2 scenario turn…
Correlation functions of fermionic fields described by the massless Thirring model are analysed within the operator formalism developed by Klaiber and the path-integral approach with massless fermions quantized in the chiral symmetric phase. We notice that Klaiber's composite fermion operators possess non-standard properties under parity transformations and construct operators with standard parity properties. We find that Klaiber's parameterization of a one-parameter family of solutions of the massless Thirring model is not well defined, since it is not consistent with the requirement of chira…
In this paper we study fermion localization and resonances on a special type of braneworld model supporting brane splitting. In such models one can construct multi-wall branes which cause considerable simplification in field equations. We use a polynomial superpotential to construct this brane. The suitable Yukawa coupling between the background scalar field and localized fermion is determined. The massive fermion resonance spectrum is obtained. The number of resonances is increased for higher values of Yukawa coupling.
We have studied holographic Wilsonian renormalization group (HWRG) of free massless fermionic fields in AdS space and its stochastic quantization(SQ) by identifying the Euclidean action with its boundary on-shell action. The natural extension of the relation between stochastic 2-point correlation function and double trace coupling obtained from HWRG computation conjectured in arXiv:1209.2242 to fermionic fields is established. We have confirmed that the stochastic 2-point function precisely captures the radial flow of the double trace coupling via this relation.
In this paper, we study the spontaneous Lorentz symmetry breaking for a four-dimensional massless four-fermion model. Our methodology is based on use of the rationalized propagator. We show that a bumblebee potential arises as a result of one-loop calculations and displays nontrivial minima. Also we demonstrate that a phase transition restoring Lorentz invariance can occur at a finite temperature.
We show that the boson field representation of the massless fermion fields, suggested by Morchio, Pierotti and Strocchi in J. Math. Phys. 33, 777 (1992) for the operator solution of the massless Thirring model, agrees completely with the existence of the chirally broken phase in the massless Thirring model revealed in EPJC 20, 723 (2001) and hep-th/0112183, when the free massless boson fields are described by the quantum field theory, free of infrared divergences in 1+1-dimensional space-time, formulated in hep-th/0112184 and hep-th/0204237.
Effects of the configuration of an external static magnetic field in the form of a singular vortex on the vacuum of a quantized massless spinor field are determined. The most general boundary conditions at the punctured singular point which make the twodimensional Dirac Hamiltonian to be self-adjoint are employed.
The zero-point energy of a massless fermion field in the interior of two parallel plates in a D-dimensional space-time at zero temperature is calculated. In order to regularize the model, a mix between dimensional and zeta-function regularization procedure is used and it is found that the regularized zero-point energy density is finite for any number of space-time dimensions. We present a general expression for the Casimir energy for the fermionic field in such a situation.
We study the thermodynamic properties of massless Dirac fermions in graphene under a uniform magnetic field and Rashba spin-orbit coupling with a $q-$deformed Heisenberg algebra calculus. The thermodynamic functions such as the Helmholtz free energy, total energy, entropy and heat capacity are obtained by using an approach based on the zeta function and Euler-Maclaurain formula. These functions will be numerically examined for different values of $η={1\over i}\ln(q)$. In particular, the heat capacity in the presence of deformation, all curves coincide and reach the fixed value $C=6K_B$ three t…
The electric and magnetic dipole moments of dyon fermions are calculated within N=2 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory including the theta-term. It is found, in particular, that the gyroelectric ratio deviates from the canonical value of 2 for the monopole fermion (n_m=1,n_e=0) in the case theta\not=0. Then, applying the S-duality transformation to the result for the dyon fermions, we obtain an explicit prediction for the electric dipole moment (EDM) of the charged fermion (`electron'). It is thus seen that the approach presented here provides a novel method for computing the EDM induced by the …
We consider the massless charge-$N$ Schwinger model and its deformation with two four-fermion operators. Without the deformations, this model exhibits chiral symmetry breaking without confinement. It is usually asserted that the massless Schwinger model is always deconfined and a string tension emerges only when a mass for the fermion field is turned on. We show that in the presence of these four-fermion operators, the massless theory can in fact confine. One of the four-fermion deformations is chirally neutral, and is a marginal deformation. The other operator can be relevant or irrelevant, a…
We study the gauge covariance of the fermion-photon vertex in quenched, massless 3-dimensional quantum electrodynamics. A class of vertex Ansätze obtained by generalizing that proposed by Dong et al. is tested using the invariance of the photon polarization scalar under the Landau-Khalatnikov transformation.
We use the massless Thirring model to demonstrate a new approach to non-perturbative fermion calculations based on the spherical field formalism. The methods we present are free from the problems of fermion doubling and difficulties associated with integrating out massless fermions. Using a non-perturbative regularization, we compute the two-point correlator and find agreement with the known analytic solution.
We study the spectrum of $H(m)=γ_5 W(-m)$ with $W(m)$ being the Wilson-Dirac operator on the lattice with bare mass equal to $m$. The background gauge fields are generated using the SU(3) Wilson action at $β=5.7$ on an $8^3\times 16$ lattice. We find evidence that the spectrum of $H(m)$ is gapless for $1.02 < m < 2.0$, implying that the physical quark is massless in this whole region.
In this paper we study massless fermions coupled to spherically symmetric $SU(N)$ monopoles without Yukawa couplings between the Higgs and fermion fields. The corresponding Dirac operator is not Fredholm and the associated eigenfunctions are not $L^2$-normalizable. Here we derive a formula for the dimension of the plane-wave normalizable kernel of such a Dirac operator for fermions of any representation of $SU(N)$ in the presence of any spherically symmetric monopole background. Notably, our results also apply to fermions coupled to monopoles that preserve non-abelian gauge symmetry.
Effects of the configuration of an external static magnetic field in the form of a singular vortex on the vacuum of a quantized massless spinor field are studied. The most general boundary conditions at the punctured singular point which make the twodimensional Dirac Hamiltonian to be self-adjoint are employed.
The salient features of the Ginsparg-Wilson fermion in topologically nontrivial background gauge fields are outlined. The R-invariance of the zero modes, the indices and the index theorem on a finite lattice are illustrated. The role of R in converting the nonlocal D_c into a sequence of highly local D is demonstrated.
We suggest that the topological susceptibility in gluodynamics can be found in terms of the gluon condensate using renormalizability and heavy fermion representation of the anomaly. Analogous relations can be also obtained for other zero momentum correlation functions involving the topological density operator. Using these relations, we find the theta dependence of the condensates <GG>, <G \tilde{G}> and of the partition function for small theta and an arbitrary number of colors.
The square root of the positive definite hermitian operator $D_w^{\dagger} D_w$ in Neuberger's proposal of exactly massless quarks on the lattice is implemented by the recursion formula $Y_{k+1} = {1/2} (Y_k + D_w^{\dagger} D_w Y_k^{-1})$ with $Y_0 = \Id$, where $Y_k^2$ converges to $D_w^{\dagger} D_w$ quadratically. The spectrum of the lattice Dirac operator for single massless fermion in two dimensional background U(1) gauge fields is investigated. For smooth background gauge fields with non-zero topological charge, the exact zero modes with definite chirality are reproduced to a very high p…
We study the Casimir effect for parallel plates with massless Majorana fermions obeying the bag boundary conditions at finite temperature. The thermal influence will modify the effect. It is found that the sign of the Casimir energy keeps negative if the product of plate distance and the temperature is larger than a special value or the energy will change to be positive. The Casimir energy rises with the stronger thermal influence. We show that the attractive Casimir force between two parallel plates becomes greater with the increasing temperature. In the case of piston system involving the sa…
We discuss the renormalizability of the massless Thirring model in terms of the causal fermion Green functions and correlation functions of left-right fermion densities. We obtain the most general expressions for the causal two-point Green function and correlation function of left-right fermion densities with dynamical dimensions of fermion fields, parameterised by two parameters. The region of variation of these parameters is constrained by the positive definiteness of the norms of the wave functions of the states related to components of the fermion vector current. We show that the dynamical…
The ground state of the multi-flavor 2-dimensional quantum electrodynamics (QED_2) is determined in the presence of finite baryon density, and it is shown that the model possesses two phases, the low density phase where the external baryon density is totally screened, and the high density phase, where the screening is only partial. The renormalization of the bosonized version of the model is also performed for both the zero and the finite density model giving massless multi-flavor QED_2 in both cases.
It is known that in the ladder approximation the relativistic two-fermion bound-state equation of Bethe and Salpeter has solutions corresponding to the binding energy equal to the total mass of the particles. The study of these massless states has been carried out only for the bound system at rest. Of course, such composite boson can not be in the state of rest. But it is more importantly that this approach for the massless boson can not be interpreted as the limiting case of a nonzero mass system because the phase velocity of the boson wave must equal to the speed of light. Using the Bethe-Sa…
We come back to the issue of bosonization of fermions in two spacetime dimension and give a new costruction in the steady state case where left and right moving particles can coexist at two different temperatures. A crucial role in our construction is played by translation invariant infrared states and the corresponding field operators which are naturally linked to the infrared behaviour of the correlation functions. We present two applications: a simple new derivation in the free relativistic case of a formula by Bernard and Doyon and a full operator solution of the massless Thirring model in…
The massive Schwinger model is quantized on the light cone with great care on the bosonic zero modes by putting the system in a finite (light-cone) spatial box. The zero mode of $A_{-}$ survives Dirac's procedure for the constrained system as a dynamical degree of freedom. After regularization and quantization, we show that the physical space condition is consistently imposed and relates the fermion Fock states to the zero mode of the gauge field. The vacuum is obtained by solving a Schrödinger equation in a periodic potential, so that the theta is understood as the Bloch momentum. We also con…
We consider SU(2) Yang-Mills theory in 1+1 dimensions coupled to massless adjoint fermions. With all fields in the adjoint representation the gauge group is actually SU(2)/Z_2, which possesses nontrivial topology. In particular, there are two distinct topological sectors and the physical vacuum state has a structure analogous to a θvacuum. We show how this feature is realized in light-front quantization, using discretization of x^- as an infrared regulator. We find exact expressions for the vacuum states and construct the analog of the θvacuum. We calculate the bilinear condensate of the model…
We study a three-dimensional non-compact QED with a single two-component massless fermion and two infinitely massive regulator fermions of half the charge using lattice overlap formalism. The parity anomaly is expected to cancel exactly between the massless and regulator fermions in the continuum, but this cancellation is inexact on lattice akin to lattice chiral gauge theories. We show non-perturbatively that parity-breaking terms vanish in the continuum limit at any finite volume. We present numerical evidences that the resulting parity-invariant theory spontaneously breaks parity in the inf…
Recently, it was pointed out that quantum orders and the associated projective symmetry groups can produce and protect massless gauge bosons and massless fermions in local bosonic models. In this paper, we demonstrate that a state with such kind of quantum orders can be viewed as a string-net condensed state. The emerging gauge bosons and fermions in local bosonic models can be regarded as a direct consequence of string-net condensation. The gauge bosons are fluctuations of nets of large closed strings which are condensed in the ground state. The ends of condensed open strings are the charged …
We study the Schwinger-Dyson equation for the fermion self-energy in massless and massive $QED_2$, in the ladder approximation. When the fermion is massless (and the photon massless or massive), we check the reliability of this approximation by comparing its solutions with the exact ones. They agree only when the photon is massless. For a massive fermion and massless photon, we show that there is no consistent solution at all, the infrared divergences introduced by the approximation forbidding even the trivial solution. When both fermion and photon are massive, we find a non-perturbative (extr…
