We study the mean diagonal overlap of left and right eigenvectors associated with complex eigenvalues in $N\times N$ non-Hermitian random Gaussian matrices. In well known works by Chalker and Mehlig the expectation of this (self-)overlap was computed for the complex Ginibre ensemble as $N\to \infty$. In the present work, we consider the same quantity in the real and complex elliptic Ginibre ensembles characterized by correlations between off-diagonal entries controlled by a parameter $τ\in[0,1]$, with $τ=1$ corresponding to the Hermitian limit. We derive exact expressions for the mean diagonal overlap in both ensembles at any finite $N$, for any eigenvalue off the real axis. We further investigate several scaling regimes as $N\rightarrow \infty$, both in the limit of strong non-Hermiticity keeping a fixed $τ\in[0,1)$ and in the weak non-Hermiticity limit, with $τ$ approaching unity in such a way that $N(1-τ)$ remains finite.
We show that the distribution of bulk spacings between pairs of adjacent eigenvalue real parts of a random matrix drawn from the complex elliptic Ginibre ensemble is asymptotically given by a generalization of the Gaudin-Mehta distribution, in the limit of weak non-Hermiticity. The same generalization is expressed in terms of an integro-differential Painlevé function and it is shown that the generalized Gaudin-Mehta distribution describes the crossover, with increasing degree of non-Hermiticity, from Gaudin-Mehta nearest-neighbor bulk statistics in the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble to Poisson gap …
The focus of this paper is on the distribution function of the rightmost eigenvalue for the complex elliptic Ginibre ensemble in the limit of weak non-Hermiticity. We show how the limiting distribution function can be expressed in terms of an integro-differential Painlevé-II function and how the same captures the non-trivial transition between Poisson and Airy point process extreme value statistics as the degree of non-Hermiticity decreases. Our most explicit new results concern the tail asymptotics of the limiting distribution function. For the right tail we compute the leading order asymptot…
We consider the eigenvalues of symplectic elliptic Ginibre matrices which are known to form a Pfaffian point process whose correlation kernel can be expressed in terms of the skew-orthogonal Hermite polynomials. We derive the scaling limits and the convergence rates of the correlation functions at the real bulk/edge of the spectrum, which in particular establishes the local universality at strong non-Hermiticity. Furthermore, we obtain the subleading corrections of the edge correlation kernels, which depend on the non-Hermiticity parameter contrary to the universal leading term. Our proofs are…
The elliptic Ginibre ensemble of complex non-Hermitian random matrices allows to interpolate between the rotational invariant Ginibre ensemble and the Gaussian unitary ensemble of Hermitian random matrices. It corresponds to a two-dimensional one-component Coulomb gas in a quadrupolar field, at inverse temperature $β=2$. Furthermore, it represents a determinantal point process in the complex plane with corresponding kernel of planar Hermite polynomials. Our main tool is a saddle point analysis of a single contour integral representation of this kernel. We provide a unifying approach to rigorou…
The Ginibre unitary ensemble (GinUE) consists of $N \times N$ random matrices with independent complex standard Gaussian entries. This was introduced in 1965 by Ginbre, who showed that the eigenvalues form a determinantal point process with an explicit correlation kernel, and after scaling they are supported on the unit disk with constant density. For some time now it has been appreciated that GinUE has a fundamental place within random matrix theory, both for its applications and for the richness of its theory. Here we review the progress on a number of themes relating to the study of GinUE. …
This is part II of a review relating to the three classes of random non-Hermitian Gaussian matrices introduced by Ginibre in 1965. While part I restricted attention to the GinUE (Ginibre unitary ensemble) case of complex elements, in this part the cases of real elements (GinOE, denoting Ginibre orthogonal ensemble) and quaternion elements represented as $2 \times 2$ complex blocks (GinSE, denoting Ginibre symplectic ensemble) are considered. The eigenvalues of both GinOE and GinSE form Pfaffian point processes, which are more complicated than the determinantal point processes resulting from Gi…

We consider the real eigenvalues of an $(N \times N)$ real elliptic Ginibre matrix whose entries are correlated through a non-Hermiticity parameter $τ_N\in [0,1]$. In the almost-Hermitian regime where $1-τ_N=Θ(N^{-1})$, we obtain the large-$N$ expansion of the mean and the variance of the number of the real eigenvalues. Furthermore, we derive the limiting empirical distributions of the real eigenvalues, which interpolate the Wigner semicircle law and the uniform distribution, the restriction of the elliptic law on the real axis. Our proofs are based on the skew-orthogonal polynomial representa…

We consider the complex eigenvalues of a Wishart type random matrix model $X=X_1 X_2^*$, where two rectangular complex Ginibre matrices $X_{1,2}$ of size $N\times (N+ν)$ are correlated through a non-Hermiticity parameter $τ\in[0,1]$. For general $ν=O(N)$ and $τ$ we obtain the global limiting density and its support, given by a shifted ellipse. It provides a non-Hermitian generalisation of the Marchenko-Pastur distribution, which is recovered at maximal correlation $X_1=X_2$ when $τ=1$. The square root of the complex Wishart eigenvalues, corresponding to the non-zero complex eigenvalues of the …
Non-Hermitian random matrices with symplectic symmetry provide examples for Pfaffian point processes in the complex plane. These point processes are characterised by a matrix valued kernel of skew-orthogonal polynomials. We develop their theory in providing an explicit construction of skew-orthogonal polynomials in terms of orthogonal polynomials that satisfy a three-term recurrence relation, for general weight functions in the complex plane. New examples for symplectic ensembles are provided, based on recent developments in orthogonal polynomials on planar domains or curves in the complex pla…
We study the distribution of the eigenvalue condition numbers $κ_i=\sqrt{ (\mathbf{l}_i^* \mathbf{l}_i)(\mathbf{r}_i^* \mathbf{r}_i)}$ associated with real eigenvalues $λ_i$ of partially asymmetric $N\times N$ random matrices from the real Elliptic Gaussian ensemble. The large values of $κ_i$ signal the non-orthogonality of the (bi-orthogonal) set of left $\mathbf{l}_i$ and right $\mathbf{r}_i$ eigenvectors and enhanced sensitivity of the associated eigenvalues against perturbations of the matrix entries. We derive the general finite $N$ expression for the joint density function(JDF) ${\cal P}…
A non-Hermitian PT-symmetric version of the kicked top is introduced to study the interplay of quantum chaos with balanced loss and gain. The classical dynamics arising from the quantum dynamics of the angular momentum expectation values are derived. The presence of PT-symmetry can lead to stable mixed regular chaotic behaviour without sinks or sources for subcritical values of the gain-loss parameter. This is an example of what is known in classical dynamical systems as reversible dynamical systems. For large values of the kicking strength a strange attractor is observed that also persists if…
