We compute the gap probability that a circle of radius r around the origin contains exactly k complex eigenvalues. Four different ensembles of random matrices are considered: the Ginibre ensembles and their chiral complex counterparts, with both complex (beta=2) or quaternion real (beta=4) matrix elements. For general non-Gaussian weights we give a Fredholm determinant or Pfaffian representation respectively, depending on the non-Hermiticity parameter. At maximal non-Hermiticity, that is for rotationally invariant weights, the product of Fredholm eigenvalues for beta=4 follows from beta=2 by skipping every second factor, in contrast to the known relation for Hermitian ensembles. On additionally choosing Gaussian weights we give new explicit expressions for the Fredholm eigenvalues in the chiral case, in terms of Bessel-K and incomplete Bessel-I functions. This compares to known results for the Ginibre ensembles in terms of incomplete exponentials. Furthermore we present an asymptotic expansion of the logarithm of the gap probability for large argument r at large N in all four ensembles, up to including the third order linear term. We can provide strict upper and lower bounds and present numerical evidence for its conjectured values, depending on the number of exact zero eigenvalues in the chiral ensembles. For the Ginibre ensemble at beta=2 exact results were previously derived by Forrester.
We investigate the transition probabilities for the "flavor" eigenstates in the two-level quantum system, which is described by a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian with the parity and time-reversal (PT) symmetry. Particularly, we concentrate on the so-called PT-broken phase, where two eigenvalues of the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian turn out to be a complex conjugate pair. In this case, we find that the transition probabilities will be unbounded in the limit of infinite time $t \to +\infty$. However, after performing a connection between a non-Hermitian system, which exhibits passive PT-symmetry and globa…
We investigate how to define in a consistent way the probabilities of the transitions between the "flavor" states of the two-level quantum system, which is described by a non-Hermitian but parity and time-reversal (PT) symmetric Hamiltonian. Explicit calculations are carried out to demonstrate the conservation of probability if a proper definition of the final state is adopted. Finally, this formalism is applied to two-flavor neutrino oscillations $ν^{}_μ\to ν^{}_μ$ and $ν^{}_μ\to ν^{}_τ$ in vacuum, where the exact PT symmetry requires the vacuum mixing angle to be maximal, which is compatible…
The probability for the exclusion of eigenvalues from an interval $(-x,x)$ symmetrical about the origin for a scaled ensemble of Hermitian random matrices, where the Fredholm kernel is a type of Bessel kernel with parameter $ a $ (a generalisation of the sine kernel in the bulk scaling case), is considered. It is shown that this probability is the square of a $τ$-function, in the sense of Okamoto, for the Painlevé system \PIII. This then leads to a factorisation of the probability as the product of two $τ$-functions for the Painlevé system \PIIIdash. A previous study has given a formula of thi…
We provide classification of gapless phases in non-Hermitian systems according to two types of complex-energy gaps: point gap and line gap. We show that exceptional points, at which not only eigenenergies but also eigenstates coalesce, are characterized by gap closing of point gaps with nontrivial topological charges. Moreover, we find that bulk Fermi arcs accompanying exceptional points are robust because of topological charges for real line gaps. On the basis of the classification, some examples are also discussed.
We classify topological defects in non-Hermitian systems with point gap, real gap and imaginary gap for all the Bernard-LeClair classes or generalized Bernard-LeClair classes in all dimensions. The defect Hamiltonian $H(\bf{k}, {\bf r})$ is described by a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian with spatially modulated adiabatical parameter ${\bf r}$ surrounding the defect. While the non-Hermitian system with point gap belongs to any of 38 symmetry classes (Bernard-LeClair classes), for non-Hermitian systems with line-like gap we get 54 non-equivalent generalized Bernard-LeClair classes as a natural general…
The hallmark of symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases is the existence of anomalous boundary states, which can only be realized with the corresponding bulk system. In this work, we show that for every Hermitian anomalous boundary mode of the ten Altland-Zirnbauer classes, a non-Hermitian counterpart can be constructed, whose long time dynamics provides a realization of the anomalous boundary state. We prove that the non-Hermitian counterpart is characterized by a point-gap topological invariant, and furthermore, that the invariant exactly matches that of the corresponding Hermitian anoma…
We propose a non-Hermitian quantum annealing algorithm which can be useful for solving complex optimization problems. We demonstrate our approach on Grover's problem of finding a marked item inside of unsorted database. We show that the energy gap between the ground and excited states depends on the relaxation parameters, and is not exponentially small. This allows a significant reduction of the searching time. We discuss the relations between the probabilities of finding the ground state and the survival of a quantum computer in a dissipative environment.
We study the gap probabilities of the single-time Tacnode process. Through steepest descent analysis of a suitable Riemann-Hilbert problem, we show that under appropriate scaling regimes the gap probability of the Tacnode process degenerates into a product of two independent gap probabilities of the Airy processes.
Given a $M\times M$ Hermitian matrix $\mathcal{H}$ with possibly degenerate eigenvalues $\mathcal{E}_1 < \mathcal{E}_2 < \mathcal{E}_3< \dots$, we provide, in the limit $M\to\infty$, a lower bound for the gap $μ_2 = \mathcal{E}_2 - \mathcal{E}_1$ assuming that (i) the eigenvector (eigenvectors) associated to $\mathcal{E}_1$ is ergodic (are all ergodic) and (ii) the off-diagonal terms of $\mathcal{H}$ vanish for $M\to\infty$ more slowly than $M^{-2}$. Under these hypotheses, we find $\varliminf_{M\to\infty} μ_2 \geq \varlimsup_{M\to\infty} \min_{n} \mathcal{H}_{n,n}$. This general result turns …
The topological classification of hermitian operators is solely determined by the presence or absence of certain discrete symmetries. For non-hermitian operators we in addition need to specify the type of spectral gap. They come in the flavor of a point gap or a line gap. Since the presence of a line gap implies the existence of a point gap, there is usually more than one mathematical classification applicable to a physical system. That raises the question: which of these gap-type classifications is physically meaningful? To decide this question, I propose a simple criterion, namely the choice…
We derive exact results for gap probabilities, as well as densities of extreme eigenvalues for six complex random matrix ensembles of fundamental importance. These are Gauss-Wigner, Laguerre-Wishart, Cauchy-Lorentz (two variants), Jacobi-MANOVA and Bures-Hall (trace unrestricted). We deal with both correlated and uncorrelated cases. Extensive Monte-Carlo simulations based on explicit matrix models or Dyson's log-gas formalism have also been performed, which corroborate all analytical results.
It has recently been emphasized that all known exact evaluations of gap probabilities for classical unitary matrix ensembles are in fact $τ$-functions for certain Painlevé systems. We show that all exact evaluations of gap probabilities for classical orthogonal matrix ensembles, either known or derivable from the existing literature, are likewise $τ$-functions for certain Painlevé systems. In the case of symplectic matrix ensembles all exact evaluations, either known or derivable from the existing literature, are identified as the mean of two $τ$-functions, both of which correspond to Hamilton…
The gap probabilities at the hard and soft edges of scaled random matrix ensembles with orthogonal symmetry are known in terms of $τ$-functions. Extending recent work relating to the soft edge, it is shown that these $τ$-functions, and their generalizations to contain a generating function parameter, can be expressed as Fredholm determinants. These same Fredholm determinants also occur in exact expressions for gap probabilities in scaled random matrix ensembles with unitary and symplectic symmetry.
An infinite log-gas formalism, due to Dyson, and independently Fogler and Shklovskii, is applied to the computation of conditioned gap probabilities at the hard and soft edges of random matrix $β$-ensembles. The conditioning is that there are $n$ eigenvalues in the gap, with $n \ll |t|$, $t$ denoting the end point of the gap. It is found that the entropy term in the formalism must be replaced by a term involving the potential drop to obtain results consistent with known asymptotic expansions in the case $n=0$. With this modification made for general $n$, the derived expansions - which are for …
We consider the probability that no points lie on $g$ large intervals in the bulk of the Airy point process. We make a conjecture for all the terms in the asymptotics up to and including the oscillations of order $1$, and we prove this conjecture for $g=1$.
We express the gap probabilities of the tacnode process as the ratio of two Fredholm determinants; the denominator is the standard Tracy-Widom distribution, while the numerator is the Fredholm determinant of a very explicit kernel constructed with Airy functions and exponentials. The formula allows us to apply the theory of numerical evaluation of Fredholm determinants and thus produce numerical results for the gap probabilities. In particular we investigate numerically how, in different regimes, the Pearcey process degenerates to the Airy one, and the tacnode degenerates to the Pearcey and Ai…
Boundary conditions in quantum graph vertices are generally given in terms of a unitary matrix $U$. Observing that if $U$ has at most two eigenvalues, then the scattering matrix $\mathcal{S}(k)$ of the vertex is a linear combination of the identity matrix and a fixed Hermitian unitary matrix, we construct vertex couplings with this property: For all momenta $k$, the transmission probability from the $j$-th edge to $\ell$-th edge is independent of $(j,\ell)$, and all the reflection probabilities are equal. We classify these couplings according to their scattering properties, which leads to the …
We study the phenomenon of "crowding" near the largest eigenvalue $λ_{\max}$ of random $N \times N$ matrices belonging to the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (GUE) of random matrix theory. We focus on two distinct quantities: (i) the density of states (DOS) near $λ_{\max}$, $ρ_{\rm DOS}(r,N)$, which is the average density of eigenvalues located at a distance $r$ from $λ_{\max}$ and (ii) the probability density function of the gap between the first two largest eigenvalues, $p_{\rm GAP}(r,N)$. In the edge scaling limit where $r = {\cal O}(N^{-1/6})$, which is described by a double scaling limit of a s…
We revisit the problem of classifying topological band structures in non-Hermitian systems. Recently, a solution has been proposed, which is based on redefining the notion of energy band gap in two different ways, leading to the so-called "point-gap" and "line-gap" schemes. However, simple Hamiltonians without band degeneracies can be constructed which correspond to neither of the two schemes. Here, we resolve this shortcoming of the existing classifications by developing the most general topological characterization of non-Hermitian bands for systems without a symmetry. Our approach, which is…
We consider the gap probability for the Bessel process in the single-time and multi-time case. We prove that the scalar and matrix Fredholm determinants of such process can be expressed in terms of determinants of integrable kernels à la Its-Izergin-Korepin-Slavnov and thus related to suitable Riemann-Hilbert problems. In the single-time case, we construct a Lax pair formalism and we derive a Painlevé III equation related to the Fredholm determinant.
We consider the gap probability for the Generalized Bessel process in the single-time and multi-time case. We prove that the scalar and matrix Fredholm determinants of such process can be expressed in terms of determinants of Its-Izergin-Korepin-Slavnov integrable kernels and thus related to suitable Riemann-Hilbert problems. Exceptional points are universal level degeneracies induced by non-Hermiticity. Whereas past decades witnessed their new physics, the unified understanding has yet to be obtained. Here we present the complete classification of generic topologically stable exceptional points according to two types of complex-energy gaps and fundamental symmetries of charge conjugation, parity, and time reversal. This classification reveals unique non-Hermitian gapless structures with no Hermitian analogs and systematically predicts unknown non-Hermitian semimetals and nodal superconductors; a topological dumbbe…
We study Fredholm determinants of a class of integral operators, whose kernels can be expressed as double contour integrals of a special type. Such Fredholm determinants appear in various random matrix and statistical physics models. We show that the logarithmic derivatives of the Fredholm determinants are directly related to solutions of the Painlevé II hierarchy. This confirms and generalizes a recent conjecture by Le Doussal, Majumdar, and Schehr. In addition, we obtain asymptotics at $\pm\infty$ for the Painlevé transcendents and large gap asymptotics for the corresponding point processes.
The probabilities for gaps in the eigenvalue spectrum of the finite dimension $ N \times N $ random matrix Hermite and Jacobi unitary ensembles on some single and disconnected double intervals are found. These are cases where a reflection symmetry exists and the probability factors into two other related probabilities, defined on single intervals. Our investigation uses the system of partial differential equations arising from the Fredholm determinant expression for the gap probability and the differential-recurrence equations satisfied by Hermite and Jacobi orthogonal polynomials. In our stud…
Recent experimental advances in Floquet engineering and controlling dissipation in open systems have brought about unprecedented flexibility in tailoring novel phenomena without any static and Hermitian analogues. It can be epitomized by the various Floquet and non-Hermitian topological phases. Topological classifications of either static/Floquet Hermitian or static non-Hermitian systems based on the underlying symmetries have been well established in the past several years. However, a coherent understanding and classification of Floquet non-Hermitian (FNH) topological phases have not been ach…
Our goal is to show that the one-interval gap probability for the q-Hahn orthogonal polynomial ensemble can be expressed through a solution of the asymmetric q-Painleve V equation. The case of the q-Hahn ensemble we consider is the most general case of the orthogonal polynomial ensembles that have been studied. Our approach is based on the analysis of q-connections on the Riemann sphere with a particular singularity structure. It requires a new derivation of a q-difference equation of Sakai's hierarchy of type A_{2}^{(1)}. We also calculate its Lax pair.
A nonzero non-Hermitian winding number indicates that a gapped system is in a nontrivial topological class due to the non-Hermiticity of its Hamiltonian. While for Hermitian systems nontrivial topological quantum numbers are reflected by the existence of edge states, a nonzero non-Hermitian winding number impacts a system's bulk response. To establish this relation, we introduce the bulk Green function, which describes the response of a gapped system to an external perturbation on timescales where the induced excitations have not propagated to the boundary yet, and show that it will grow in sp…
We consider the gap probability for the Pearcey and Airy processes; we set up a Riemann--Hilbert approach (different from the standard one) whereby the asymptotic analysis for large gap/large time of the Pearcey process is shown to factorize into two independent Airy processes using the Deift-Zhou steepest descent analysis. Additionally we relate the theory of Fredholm determinants of integrable kernels and the theory of isomonodromic tau function. Using the Riemann-Hilbert problem mentioned above we construct a suitable Lax pair formalism for the Pearcey gap probability and re-derive the two …
The probabilities for gaps in the eigenvalue spectrum of finite $ N\times N $ random unitary ensembles on the unit circle with a singular weight, and the related hermitian ensembles on the line with Cauchy weight, are found exactly. The finite cases for exclusion from single and double intervals are given in terms of second order second degree ODEs which are related to certain \mbox{Painlevé-VI} transcendents. The scaled cases in the thermodynamic limit are again second degree and second order, this time related to \mbox{Painlevé-V} transcendents. Using transformations relating the second degr…
In this paper we study a certain recurrence relation, that can be used to generate ladder operators for the Laguerre Unitary ensemble, from the point of view of Sakai's geometric theory of Painlevé equations. On one hand, this gives us one more detailed example of the appearance of discrete Painlevé equations in the theory of orthogonal polynomials. On the other hand, it serves as a good illustration of the effectiveness of a recently proposed procedure on how to reduce such recurrences to some canonical discrete Painlevé equations.
Airy and Pearcey-like kernels and generalizations arising in random matrix theory are expressed as double integrals of ratios of exponentials, possibly multiplied with a rational function. In this work it is shown that such kernels are intimately related to wave functions for polynomial (Gel'fand-Dickey reductions) or rational reductions of the KP-hierarchy; their Fredholm determinant also satisfies linear PDEs (Virasoro constraints), yielding, in a systematic way, non-linear PDEs for the Fredholm determinant of such kernels. Examples include Fredholm determinants giving the gap probability of…
We develop a complete theory of symmetry and topology in non-Hermitian physics. We demonstrate that non-Hermiticity ramifies the celebrated Altland-Zirnbauer symmetry classification for insulators and superconductors. In particular, charge conjugation is defined in terms of transposition rather than complex conjugation due to the lack of Hermiticity, and hence chiral symmetry becomes distinct from sublattice symmetry. It is also shown that non-Hermiticity enables a Hermitian-conjugate counterpart of the Altland-Zirnbauer symmetry. Taking into account sublattice symmetry or pseudo-Hermiticity a…
