It is shown how mixed finite element methods for symmetric positive definite eigenvalue problems related to partial differential operators can provide guaranteed lower eigenvalue bounds. The method is based on a classical compatibility condition (inclusion of kernels) of the mixed scheme and on local constants related to compact embeddings, which are often known explicitly. Applications include scalar second-order elliptic operators, linear elasticity, and the Steklov eigenvalue problem.
This paper derives a posteriori error estimates for the mixed numerical approximation of the Laplace eigenvalue problem with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. In particular, the resulting error estimator constitutes an upper bound for the error and is shown to be local efficient. Therefore, we present a reconstruction in the standard $H^1_0$-conforming space for the primal variable of the mixed Laplace eigenvalue problem. This reconstruction is performed locally on a set of vertex patches.
We derive optimal and asymptotically exact a posteriori error estimates for the approximation of the Laplace eigenvalue problem. To do so, we combine two results from the literature. First, we use the hypercircle techniques developed for mixed eigenvalue approximations with Raviart-Thomas Finite elements. In addition, we use the post-processings introduced for the eigenvalue and eigenfunction based on mixed approximations with the Brezzi-Douglas-Marini Finite element. To combine these approaches, we define a novel additional local post-processing for the fluxes that appropriately modifies the …

In this paper, for the Stokes eigenvalue problem in $d$-dimensional case $(d=2,3)$, we present an a posteriori error estimate of residual type of the mixed discontinuous Galerkin finite element method using $P_{k}-P_{k-1}$ element $(k\geq 1)$. We give the a posteriori error estimators for approximate eigenpairs, prove their reliability and efficiency for eigenfunctions, and also analyze their reliability for eigenvalues. We implement adaptive calculation, and the numerical results confirm our theoretical predictions and show that our method can achieve the optimal convergence order $O(dof^{-2k…
In two and three dimensional domains, we analyze mixed finite element methods for a velocity-pressure-pseudostress formulation of the Stokes eigenvalue problem. The methods consist in two schemes: the velocity and pressure are approximated with piecewise polynomial and for the pseudostress we consider two classic families of finite elements for $\mathrm{H}(\mathop{\mathrm{div}})$ spaces: the Raviart-Thomas and the Brezzi-Douglas Marini elements. With the aid of the classic spectral theory for compact operators, we prove that our method does not introduce spurious modes. Also, we obtain converg…

The aim of the present work is to derive a error estimates for the Laplace eigenvalue problem in mixed form, by means of a virtual element method. With the aid of the theory for non-compact operators, we prove that the proposed method is spurious free and convergent. We prove optimal order error estimates for the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions. Finally, we report numerical tests to confirm the theoretical results together with a rigorous computational analysis of the effects of the stabilization in the computation of the spectrum.
The purpose of this paper is to analyze a mixed method for linear elasticity eigenvalue problem, which approximates numerically the stress, displacement, and rotation, by piecewise $(k+1)$, $k$ and $(k+1)$-th degree polynomial functions ($k\geq 1$), respectively. The numerical eigenfunction of stress is symmetric. By the discrete $H^1$-stability of numerical displacement, we prove an $O(h^{k+2})$ approximation to the $L^{2}$-orthogonal projection of the eigenspace of exact displacement for the eigenvalue problem, with proper regularity assumption. Thus via postprocessing, we obtain a better ap…
The aim of this paper is to analyze a mixed formulation for the two dimensional Stokes eigenvalue problem where the unknowns are the stress and the velocity, whereas the pressure can be recovered with a simple postprocess of the stress. The stress tensor is written in terms of the vorticity of the fluid, leading to an alternative mixed formulation that incorporates this physical feature. We propose a mixed numerical method where the stress is approximated with suitable Nédelec finite elements, whereas the velocity is approximated with piecewise polynomials of degree $k\geq 0$. With the aid of …
It is well known that the usual mixed method for solving the biharmonic eigenvalue problem by decomposing the operator into two Laplacians may generate spurious eigenvalues on non-convex domains. To overcome this difficulty, we adopt a recently developed mixed method, which decomposes the biharmonic equation into three Poisson equations and still recovers the original solution. Using this idea, we design an efficient biharmonic eigenvalue algorithm, which contains only Poisson solvers. With this approach, eigenfunctions can be confined in the correct space and thereby spurious modes in non-con…
For the eigenvalue problem of the Steklov differential operator, by following Liu's approach, an algorithm utilizing the conforming finite element method (FEM) is proposed to provide guaranteed lower bounds for the eigenvalues. The proposed method requires the a priori error estimation for FEM solution to nonhomogeneous Neumann problems, which is solved by constructing the hypercircle for the corresponding FEM spaces and boundary conditions. Numerical examples are also shown to confirm the efficiency of our proposed method.
