In two and three dimensional domains, we analyze mixed finite element methods for a velocity-pressure-pseudostress formulation of the Stokes eigenvalue problem. The methods consist in two schemes: the velocity and pressure are approximated with piecewise polynomial and for the pseudostress we consider two classic families of finite elements for $\mathrm{H}(\mathop{\mathrm{div}})$ spaces: the Raviart-Thomas and the Brezzi-Douglas Marini elements. With the aid of the classic spectral theory for compact operators, we prove that our method does not introduce spurious modes. Also, we obtain convergence and error estimates for the proposed methods. In order to assess the performance of the schemes, we report numerical results to compare the accuracy and robustness between both numerical schemes.
In this paper we analyze a virtual element method (VEM) for a pseudostress formulation of the Stokes eigenvalue problem. This formulation allows to eliminate the velocity and the pressure, leading to an elliptic formulation where the only unknown is the pseudostress tensor. The velocity and pressure can be recovered by a post-process. Adapting the non-compact operator theory, we prove that our method provides a correct approximation of the spectrum and is spurious free. We prove a priori error estimates, with optimal order, which we confirm with some numerical tests.
We present a priori and superconvergence error estimates of mixed finite element methods for the pseudostress-velocity formulation of the Oseen equation. In particular, we derive superconvergence estimates for the velocity and a priori error estimates under unstructured grids, and obtain superconvergence results for the pseudostress under certain structured grids. A variety of numerical experiments validate the theoretical results and illustrate the effectiveness of the superconvergent recovery-based adaptive mesh refinement. It is also numerically shown that the proposed postprocessing yields…
In this paper we analyze a mixed displacement-pseudostress formulation for the elasticity eigenvalue problem. We propose a finite element method to approximate the pseudostress tensor with Raviart-Thomas elements and the displacement with piecewise polynomials. With the aid of the classic theory for compact operators, we prove that our method is convergent and does not introduce spurious modes. Also, we obtain error estimates for the proposed method. Finally, we report some numerical tests supporting the theoretical results.
The Brinkman equations can be regarded as a combination of the Stokes and Darcy equations which model transitions between the fast flow in channels (governed by Stokes equations) and the slow flow in porous media (governed by Darcy's law). The numerical challenge for this model is the designing of a numerical scheme which is stable for both the Stokes-dominated (high permeability) and the Darcy-dominated (low permeability) equations. In this paper, we solve the Brinkman model in $n$ dimensions ($n = 2, 3$) by using the mixed discontinuous Galerkin (MDG) method, which meets this challenge. This…
In this paper we analyze a posteriori error estimates for a mixed formulation of the linear elasticity eigenvalue problem. A posteriori estimators for the nearly and perfectly compressible elasticity spectral problems are proposed. With a post-process argument, we are able to prove reliability and efficiency for the proposed estimators. The numerical method is based in Raviart-Thomas elements to approximate the pseudostress and piecewise polynomials for the displacement. We illustrate our results with numerical tests.
In the present paper we describe the computational implementation of some integral terms that arise from mixed virtual element methods (mixed-VEM) in two-dimensional pseudostress-velocity formulations. The implementation presented here consider any polynomial degree $k \geq 0$ in a natural way by building several local matrices of small size through the matrix multiplication and the Kronecker product. In particular, we apply the foregoing mentioned matrices to the Navier-Stokes equations with Dirichlet boundary conditions, whose mixed-VEM formulation was originally proposed and analyzed in a r…
In this paper, for the Stokes eigenvalue problem in $d$-dimensional case $(d=2,3)$, we present an a posteriori error estimate of residual type of the mixed discontinuous Galerkin finite element method using $P_{k}-P_{k-1}$ element $(k\geq 1)$. We give the a posteriori error estimators for approximate eigenpairs, prove their reliability and efficiency for eigenfunctions, and also analyze their reliability for eigenvalues. We implement adaptive calculation, and the numerical results confirm our theoretical predictions and show that our method can achieve the optimal convergence order $O(dof^{-2k…

The present paper proposes an inf-sup stable divergence free virtual element method and associated a priori, and a posteriori error analysis to approximate the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the Stokes spectral problem in one shot. For the a priori analysis, we take advantage of the compactness of the solution operator to prove convergence of the eigenfunctions and double order convergence of eigenvalues. Additionally we also propose an a posteriori estimator of residual type, which we prove is reliable and efficient, in order to perform adaptive refinements that allow to recover the optima…

The aim of this paper is to analyze a mixed formulation for the two dimensional Stokes eigenvalue problem where the unknowns are the stress and the velocity, whereas the pressure can be recovered with a simple postprocess of the stress. The stress tensor is written in terms of the vorticity of the fluid, leading to an alternative mixed formulation that incorporates this physical feature. We propose a mixed numerical method where the stress is approximated with suitable Nédelec finite elements, whereas the velocity is approximated with piecewise polynomials of degree $k\geq 0$. With the aid of …
For the Stokes equation over 2D and 3D domains, explicit a posteriori and a priori error estimation are novelly developed for the finite element solution. The difficulty in handling the divergence-free condition of the Stokes equation is solved by utilizing the extended hypercircle method along with the Scott-Vogelius finite element scheme. Since all terms in the error estimation have explicit values, by further applying the interval arithmetic and verified computing algorithms, the computed results provide rigorous estimation for the approximation error. As an application of the proposed erro…
This paper proposes a computer-assisted solution existence verification method for the stationary Navier-Stokes equation over general 3D domains. The proposed method verifies that the exact solution as the fixed point of the Newton iteration exists around the approximate solution through rigorous computation and error estimation. The explicit values of quantities required by applying the fixed point theorem are obtained by utilizing newly developed quantitative error estimation for finite element solutions to boundary value problems and eigenvalue problems of the Stokes equation.
This is the third part in a series on a mass conserving, high order, mixed finite element method for Stokes flow. In this part, we study a block-diagonal preconditioner for the indefinite Schur complement system arising from the discretization of the Stokes equations using these elements. The underlying finite element method is uniformly stable in both the mesh size h and polynomial order p, and we prove bounds on the eigenvalues of the preconditioned system which are independent of h and grow modestly in p. The analysis relates the Schur complement system to an appropriate variational setting…
We consider the problem of iteratively solving large and sparse double saddle-point systems arising from the stationary Stokes-Darcy equations in two dimensions, discretized by the Marker-and-Cell (MAC) finite difference method. We analyze the eigenvalue distribution of a few ideal block preconditioners. We then derive practical preconditioners that are based on approximations of Schur complements that arise in a block decomposition of the double saddle-point matrix. We show that including the interface conditions in the preconditioners is key in the pursuit of scalability. Numerical results s…
The Stokes equation posed on surfaces is important in some physical models, but its numerical solution poses several challenges not encountered in the corresponding Euclidean setting. These include the fact that the velocity vector should be tangent to the given surface and the possible presence of degenerate modes (Killing fields) in the solution. We analyze a surface finite element method which provides solutions to these challenges. We consider an interior penalty method based on the well-known Brezzi-Douglas-Marini $H({\rm div})$-conforming finite element space. The resulting spaces are ta…
We present augmented Lagrangian Schur complement preconditioners and robust multigrid methods for incompressible Stokes problems with extreme viscosity variations. Such Stokes systems arise, for instance, upon linearization of nonlinear viscous flow problems, and they can have severely inhomogeneous and anisotropic coefficients. Using an augmented Lagrangian formulation for the incompressibility constraint makes the Schur complement easier to approximate, but results in a nearly singular (1,1)-block in the Stokes system. We present eigenvalue estimates for the quality of the Schur complement a…
We present a weighted BFBT approximation (w-BFBT) to the inverse Schur complement of a Stokes system with highly heterogeneous viscosity. When used as part of a Schur complement-based Stokes preconditioner, we observe robust fast convergence for Stokes problems with smooth but highly varying (up to 10 orders of magnitude) viscosities, optimal algorithmic scalability with respect to mesh refinement, and only a mild dependence on the polynomial order of high-order finite element discretizations ($Q_k \times P_{k-1}^{disc}$, order $k \ge 2$). For certain difficult problems, we demonstrate numeric…
