In the present paper we describe the computational implementation of some integral terms that arise from mixed virtual element methods (mixed-VEM) in two-dimensional pseudostress-velocity formulations. The implementation presented here consider any polynomial degree $k \geq 0$ in a natural way by building several local matrices of small size through the matrix multiplication and the Kronecker product. In particular, we apply the foregoing mentioned matrices to the Navier-Stokes equations with Dirichlet boundary conditions, whose mixed-VEM formulation was originally proposed and analyzed in a recent work using virtual element subspaces for $H(\text{div})$ and $H^1$, simultaneously. In addition, an algorithm is proposed for the assembly of the associated global linear system for the Newton's iteration. Finally, we present a numerical example in order to illustrate the performance of the mixed-VEM scheme and confirming the expected theoretical convergence rates.
We develop a class of mixed virtual volume methods for elliptic problems on polygonal/polyhedral grids. Unlike the mixed virtual element methods introduced in \cite{brezzi2014basic,da2016mixed}, our methods are reduced to symmetric, positive definite problems for the primary variable without using Lagrangian multipliers. We start from the usual way of changing the given equation into a mixed system using the Darcy's law, $\bu=-{\cal K} \nabla p$. By integrating the system of equations with some judiciously chosen test spaces on each element, we define new mixed virtual volume methods of all or…
We design a Mixed Virtual Element Method for the approximated solution to the first-order form of the acoustic wave equation. In absence of external load, the semi-discrete method exactly conserves the system energy. To integrate in time the semi-discrete problem we consider a classical theta-method scheme. We carry out the stability and convergence analysis in the energy norm for the semi-discrete problem showing optimal rate of convergence with respect to the mesh size. We further study the property of energy conservation for the fully-discrete system. Finally, we present some verification t…
In this work, we propose an extension of the mixed Virtual Element Method (VEM) for bi-dimensional computational grids with curvilinear edge elements. The approximation by means of rectilinear edges of a domain with curvilinear geometrical feature, such as a portion of domain boundary or an internal interface, may introduce a geometrical error that degrades the expected order of convergence of the scheme. In the present work a suitable VEM approximation space is proposed to consistently handle curvilinear geometrical objects, thus recovering optimal convergence rates. The resulting numerical s…

In this study, we propose a virtual element scheme to solve the Darcy problem in three physical dimensions. The main novelty, here proposed, is that curved elements are naturally handled without any degradation of the solution accuracy. In fact, in presence of curved boundaries, or internal interfaces, the geometrical error introduced by planar approximations may dominate the convergence rate limiting the benefit of high-order approximations. We consider the Darcy problem in its mixed form to directly obtain, with our numerical scheme, accurate and mass conservative fluxes without any post-pro…
Discrete Fracture and Matrix (DFM) models describe fractured porous media as complex sets of 2D planar polygons embedded in a 3D matrix representing the surrounding porous medium. The numerical simulation of the flow in a DFM requires the discretization of partial differential equations on the three dimensional matrix, the planar fractures and the one dimensional fracture intersections, and suitable coupling conditions between entities of different dimensionality need to be added at the various interfaces to close the problem. The present work proposes an arbitrary order implementation of the …
In many applications the accurate representation of the computational domain is a key factor to obtain reliable and effective numerical solutions. Curved interfaces, which might be internal, related to physical data, or portions of the physical boundary, are often met in real applications. However, they are often approximated leading to a geometrical error that might become dominant and deteriorate the quality of the results. Underground problems often involve the motion of fluids where the fundamental governing equation is the Darcy law. High quality velocity fields are of paramount importanc…
The numerical simulation of physical processes in the underground frequently entails challenges related to the geometry and/or data. The former are mainly due to the shape of sedimentary layers and the presence of fractures and faults, while the latter are connected to the properties of the rock matrix which might vary abruptly in space. The development of approximation schemes has recently focused on the overcoming of such difficulties with the objective of obtaining numerical schemes with good approximation properties. In this work we carry out a numerical study on the performances of the Mi…
We present an hp-adaptive virtual element method (VEM) based on the hypercircle method of Prager and Synge for the approximation of solutions to diffusion problems. We introduce a reliable and efficient a posteriori error estimator, which is computed by solving an auxiliary global mixed problem. We show that the mixed VEM satisfies a discrete inf-sup condition, with inf-sup constant independent of the discretization parameters. Furthermore, we construct a stabilization for the mixed VEM, with explicit bounds in terms of the local degree of accuracy of the method. The theoretical results are su…
In this paper, we propose an eXtended Virtual Element Method (X-VEM) for two-dimensional linear elastic fracture. This approach, which is an extension of the standard Virtual Element Method (VEM), facilitates mesh-independent modeling of crack discontinuities and elastic crack-tip singularities on general polygonal meshes. For elastic fracture in the X-VEM, the standard virtual element space is augmented by additional basis functions that are constructed by multiplying standard virtual basis functions by suitable enrichment fields, such as asymptotic mixed-mode crack-tip solutions. The design …
In this paper we analyze a virtual element method for the two dimensional elasticity spectral problem allowing small edges. Under this approach, and with the aid of the theory of compact operators, we prove convergence of the proposed VEM and error estimates, where the influence of the Lamé constants is presented. We present a series of numerical tests to assess the performance of the method where we analyze the effects of the Poisson ratio on the computation of the order of convergence, together with the effects of the stabilization term on the arising of spurious eigenvalues.
In two dimensions, we propose and analyze an a posteriori error estimator for the acoustic spectral problem based on the virtual element method in $\H(÷;Ω)$. Introducing an auxiliary unknown, we use the fact that the primal formulation of the acoustic problem is equivalent to a mixed formulation, in order to prove a superconvergence result, necessary to despise high order terms. Under the virtual element approach, we prove that our local indicator is reliable and globally efficient in the $Ł^2$-norm. We provide numerical results to assess the performance of the proposed error estimator.
We develop a formal construction of a pointwise divergence-free basis in the nonconforming virtual element method of arbitrary order for the Stokes problem introduced in [19]. The proposed construction can be seen as a generalization of the divergence-free basis in Crouzeix-Raviart finite element space [10, 17] to the virtual element space. Using the divergence-free basis obtained from our construction, we can eliminate the pressure variable from the mixed system and obtain a symmetric positive definite system. Several numerical tests are presented to confirm the efficiency and the accuracy of…
In this paper we study the approximation of eigenvalues arising from the mixed Hellinger--Reissner elasticity problem by using the simple finite element using partial relaxation of $C^0$ vertex continuity of stresses introduced recently by Jun Hu and Rui Ma. We prove that the method converge when a residual type error estimator is considered and that the estimator decays optimally with respect to the number of degrees of freedom.
This paper summarizes the development of mVEM, a MATLAB software package containing efficient and easy-following codes for various virtual element methods (VEMs) published in the literature. We explain in detail the numerical implementation of the mixed VEMs for the Darcy problem and the three-dimensional linear VEMs for the Poisson equation. For other model problems, we present the construction of the discrete methods and only provide the implementation of the elliptic projection matrices. Some mesh related functions are also given in the package, including the mesh generation and refinement …
