The Stokes equation posed on surfaces is important in some physical models, but its numerical solution poses several challenges not encountered in the corresponding Euclidean setting. These include the fact that the velocity vector should be tangent to the given surface and the possible presence of degenerate modes (Killing fields) in the solution. We analyze a surface finite element method which provides solutions to these challenges. We consider an interior penalty method based on the well-known Brezzi-Douglas-Marini $H({\rm div})$-conforming finite element space. The resulting spaces are tangential to the surface, but require penalization of jumps across element interfaces in order to weakly maintain $H^1$ conformity of the velocity field. In addition our method exactly satisfies the incompressibility constraint in the surface Stokes problem. Secondly, we give a method which robustly filters Killing fields out of the solution. This problem is complicated by the fact that the dimension of the space of Killing fields may change with small perturbations of the surface. We first approximate the Killing fields via a Stokes eigenvalue problem and then give a method which is asymptotically guaranteed to correctly exclude them from the solution. The properties of our method are rigorously established via an error analysis and illustrated via numerical experiments.
We present a novel monolithic divergence-conforming HDG scheme for a linear fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problem with a thick structure. A pressure-robust optimal energy-norm estimate is obtained for the semidiscrete scheme. When combined with a Crank-Nicolson time discretization, our fully discrete scheme is energy stable and produces an exactly divergence-free fluid velocity approximation. The resulting linear system, which is symmetric and indefinite, is solved using a preconditioned MinRes method with a robust block algebraic multigrid (AMG) preconditioner.
We propose a uniform block-diagonal preconditioner for condensed $H$(div)-conforming HDG schemes for parameter-dependent saddle point problems, including the generalized Stokes equations and the linear elasticity equations. An optimal preconditioner is obtained for the stiffness matrix on the global velocity/displacement space via the auxiliary space preconditioning (ASP) technique \cite{Xu96}. A spectrally equivalent approximation to the Schur complement on the element-wise constant pressure space is also constructed, and an explicit computable exact inverse is obtained via the Woodbury matri…
A new discontinuous Galerkin finite element method for the Stokes equations is developed in the primary velocity-pressure formulation. This method employs discontinuous polynomials for both velocity and pressure on general polygonal/polyhedral meshes. Most finite element methods with discontinuous approximation have one or more stabilizing terms for velocity and for pressure to guarantee stability and convergence. This new finite element method has the standard conforming finite element formulation, without any velocity or pressure stabilizers. Optimal-order error estimates are established for…
A recent paper [J. A. Evans, D. Kamensky, Y. Bazilevs, "Variational multiscale modeling with discretely divergence-free subscales", Computers & Mathematics with Applications, 80 (2020) 2517-2537] introduced a novel stabilized finite element method for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, which combined residual-based stabilization of advection, energetic stability, and satisfaction of a discrete incompressibility condition. However, the convergence analysis and numerical tests of the cited work were subject to the restrictive assumption of a divergence-conforming choice of velocity and …

The virtual element method (VEM) is a Galerkin approximation method that extends the finite element method to polytopal meshes. In this paper, we present two different conforming virtual element formulations for the numerical approximation of the Stokes problem that work on polygonal meshes. The velocity vector field is approximated in the virtual element spaces of the two formulations, while the pressure variable is approximated through discontinuous polynomials. Both formulations are inf-sup stable and convergent with optimal convergence rates in the $L^2$ and energy norm. We assess the effec…
In this study, we present an $hp$-multigrid preconditioner for a divergence-conforming HDG scheme for the generalized Stokes and the Navier-Stokes equations using an augmented Lagrangian formulation. Our method relies on conforming simplicial meshes in two- and three-dimensions. The $hp$-multigrid algorithm is a multiplicative auxiliary space preconditioner that employs the lowest-order space as the auxiliary space, and we developed a geometric multigrid method as the auxiliary space solver. For the generalized Stokes problem, the crucial ingredient of the geometric multigrid method is the equ…
Finite element de Rham complexes and finite element Stokes complexes with various smoothness in three dimensions are systematically constructed. First smooth scalar finite elements in three dimensions are derived through a non-overlapping decomposition of the simplicial lattice. Based on the smooth scalar finite elements, both H(div)-conforming finite elements and H(curl)-conforming finite elements with various smoothness are devised, which induce the finite element de Rham complexes with various smoothness and the associated commutative diagrams. The div stability is established for the H(div…
The analysis of the double-diffusion model and $\mathbf{H}(\mathrm{div})$-conforming method introduced in [Bürger, Méndez, Ruiz-Baier, SINUM (2019), 57:1318--1343] is extended to the time-dependent case. In addition, the efficiency and reliability analysis of residual-based {\it a posteriori} error estimators for the steady, semi-discrete, and fully discrete problems is established. The resulting methods are applied to simulate the sedimentation of small particles in salinity-driven flows. The method consists of Brezzi-Douglas-Marini approximations for velocity and compatible piecewise discont…

We construct mesh-independent and parameter-robust monolithic solvers for the coupled primal Stokes-Darcy problem. Three different formulations and their discretizations in terms of conforming and non-conforming finite element methods and finite volume methods are considered. In each case, robust preconditioners are derived using a unified theoretical framework. In particular, the suggested preconditioners utilize operators in fractional Sobolev spaces. Numerical experiments demonstrate the parameter-robustness of the proposed solvers.
In this paper, we propose a ${ P_{1}^{c}}\oplus {RT0}-P0$ discretization of the Stokes equations on general simplicial meshes in two/three dimensions (2D/3D), which yields an exactly divergence-free and pressure-independent velocity approximation with optimal order. Our method has the following features. Firstly, the global number of the degrees of freedom of our method is the same as the low order Bernardi and Raugel ($B$-$R$) finite element method (Bernardi and Raugel, 1985), while the number of {the non-zero entries} of the former is about half of the latter in the velocity-velocity region …
We present a new enriched Galerkin (EG) scheme for the Stokes equations based on piecewise linear elements for the velocity unknowns and piecewise constant elements for the pressure. The proposed EG method augments the conforming piecewise linear space for velocity by adding an additional degree of freedom which corresponds to one discontinuous linear basis function per element. Thus, the total number of degrees of freedom is significantly reduced in comparison with standard conforming, non-conforming, and discontinuous Galerkin schemes for the Stokes equation. We show the well-posedness of th…
We introduce a new hybridized discontinuous Galerkin method for the incompressible magnetohydrodynamics equations. If particular velocity, pressure, magnetic field, and magnetic pressure spaces are employed for both element and trace solution fields, we arrive at an energy stable method which returns pointwise divergence-free velocity fields and magnetic fields and properly balances linear momentum. We discretize in time using a second-order-in-time generalized-$α$ method, and we present a block iterative method for solving the resulting nonlinear system of equations at each time step. We nume…
A priori analysis for a generalized local projection stabilized conforming finite element approximation of Darcy flow and Stokes problems is presented in this paper. A first-order conforming P1 finite element space is used to approximate both the velocity and the pressure. It is shown that the stabilized discrete bilinear form satisfy the inf-sup condition with respect to a generalized local projection norm. Moreover, a priori error estimates are derived for both problems. Finally, the validation of the proposed stabilization scheme is demonstrated with appropriate numerical examples.

We consider a stabilization method for divergence-conforming B-spline discretizations of the incompressible Navier--Stokes problem wherein jumps in high-order normal derivatives of the velocity field are penalized across interior mesh facets. We prove that this method is pressure robust, consistent, and energy stable, and we show how to select the stabilization parameter appearing in the method so that excessive numerical dissipation is avoided in both the cross-wind direction and in the diffusion-dominated regime. We examine the efficacy of the method using a suite of numerical experiments, a…
We consider non-conforming discretizations of the stationary Stokes equation in three spatial dimensions by Crouzeix-Raviart type elements. The original definition in the seminal paper by M. Crouzeix and P.-A. Raviart in 1973 is implicit and also contains substantial freedom for a concrete choice. In this paper, we introduce basic Crouzeix-Raviart basis functions in 3D in analogy to the 2D case in a fully explicit way. We prove that this basic CrouzeixRaviart element for the Stokes equation is inf-sup stable for polynomial degree $k =2$ (quadratic velocity approximation). We identify spurious …
We introduce a residual-based stabilized formulation for incompressible Navier-Stokes flow that maintains discrete (and, for divergence-conforming methods, strong) mass conservation for inf-sup stable spaces with $H^1$-conforming pressure approximation, while providing optimal convergence in the diffusive regime, robustness in the advective regime, and energetic stability. The method is formally derived using the variational multiscale (VMS) concept, but with a discrete fine-scale pressure field which is solved for alongside the coarse-scale unknowns such that the coarse and fine scale velocit…
The divergence-free velocity formulation of the consistent Navier-Stokes Cahn-Hilliard model with non-matching densities, divergence-conforming discretization, and benchmarks
We are studying the efficient solution of the system of linear equation stemming from the mass conserving mixed stress (MCS) method discretization of the Stokes equations. To that end we perform static condensation to arrive at a system for the pressure and velocity unknowns. An auxiliary space preconditioner for the positive definite velocity block makes use of efficient and scalable solvers for conforming Finite Element spaces of low order and is analyzed with emphasis placed on the polynomial degree of the discretization. Numerical experiments demonstrate the potential of this approach and …

We present an optimal preconditioner for the exactly divergence-free discontinuous Galerkin (DG) discretization of Cockburn, Kanschat, and Schötzau [J. Sci. Comput., 31 (2007), pp. 61--73] and Wang and Ye [SIAM J. Numer. Anal., 45 (2007), pp. 1269--1286] for the Stokes problem. This DG method uses finite elements that use an $H({\rm div})$-conforming basis, thereby significantly complicating its solution by iterative methods. Several preconditioners for this Stokes discretization have been developed, but each is based on specialized solvers or decompositions, and do not offer a clear framework…
Conforming/Non-Conforming Mixed Finite Element Methods for Optimal Control of Velocity-Vorticity-Pressure Formulation for the Oseen Problem with Variable Viscosity
This paper deals with the Hessian discretisation method (HDM) for fourth order semi-linear elliptic equations with a trilinear nonlinearity. The HDM provides a generic framework for the convergence analysis of several numerical methods, such as, the conforming and non-conforming finite element methods (ncFEMs) and methods based on gradient recovery (GR) operators. The Adini ncFEM and GR method, a specific scheme that is based on cheap, local reconstructions of higher-order derivatives from piecewise linear functions, are analysed for the first time for fourth order semi-linear elliptic equatio…
