This article focusses on the analysis of a conforming finite element method for the time-dependent incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. For divergence-free approximations, in a semi-discrete formulation, we prove error estimates for the velocity that hold independently of both pressure and Reynolds number. Here, a key aspect is the use of the discrete Stokes projection for the error splitting. Optionally, edge-stabilisation can be included in the case of dominant convection. Emphasising the importance of conservation properties, the theoretical results are complemented with numerical simulations of vortex dynamics and laminar boundary layer flows.
We consider a linearised model of incompressible inviscid flow. Using a regularisation based on the Hodge Laplacian we prove existence and uniqueness of weak solutions for smooth domains. The model problem is then discretised using H(div)-conforming finite element methods, for which we prove error estimates for the velocity approximation in the $L^2$-norm of order $O(h^{k+\frac12})$. We also prove error estimates for the pressure error in the $L^2$-norm.
We consider a stabilization method for divergence-conforming B-spline discretizations of the incompressible Navier--Stokes problem wherein jumps in high-order normal derivatives of the velocity field are penalized across interior mesh facets. We prove that this method is pressure robust, consistent, and energy stable, and we show how to select the stabilization parameter appearing in the method so that excessive numerical dissipation is avoided in both the cross-wind direction and in the diffusion-dominated regime. We examine the efficacy of the method using a suite of numerical experiments, a…
For the eigenvalue problem of the Steklov differential operator, by following Liu's approach, an algorithm utilizing the conforming finite element method (FEM) is proposed to provide guaranteed lower bounds for the eigenvalues. The proposed method requires the a priori error estimation for FEM solution to nonhomogeneous Neumann problems, which is solved by constructing the hypercircle for the corresponding FEM spaces and boundary conditions. Numerical examples are also shown to confirm the efficiency of our proposed method.
We introduce a new hybridized discontinuous Galerkin method for the incompressible magnetohydrodynamics equations. If particular velocity, pressure, magnetic field, and magnetic pressure spaces are employed for both element and trace solution fields, we arrive at an energy stable method which returns pointwise divergence-free velocity fields and magnetic fields and properly balances linear momentum. We discretize in time using a second-order-in-time generalized-$α$ method, and we present a block iterative method for solving the resulting nonlinear system of equations at each time step. We nume…
In this study, we present an $hp$-multigrid preconditioner for a divergence-conforming HDG scheme for the generalized Stokes and the Navier-Stokes equations using an augmented Lagrangian formulation. Our method relies on conforming simplicial meshes in two- and three-dimensions. The $hp$-multigrid algorithm is a multiplicative auxiliary space preconditioner that employs the lowest-order space as the auxiliary space, and we developed a geometric multigrid method as the auxiliary space solver. For the generalized Stokes problem, the crucial ingredient of the geometric multigrid method is the equ…
This paper deals with the numerical approximation of the biharmonic inverse source problem in an abstract setting in which the measurement data is finite-dimensional. This unified framework in particular covers the conforming and nonconforming finite element methods (FEMs). The inverse problem is analysed through the forward problem. Error estimate for the forward solution is derived in an abstract set-up that applies to conforming and Morley nonconforming FEMs. Since the inverse problem is ill-posed, Tikhonov regularisation is considered to obtain a stable approximate solution. Error estimate…
In this note we will explore some applications of the recently constructed piecewise affine, $H^1$-conforming element that fits in a discrete de Rham complex [Christiansen and Hu, Generalized finite element systems for smooth differential forms and Stokes' problem. Numer. Math. 140 (2018)]. In particular we show how the element leads to locking free methods for incompressible elasticity and viscosity robust methods for the Brinkman model.
Analysis of Galerkin-mixed FEMs for incompressible miscible flow in porous media has been investigated extensively in the last several decades. Of particular interest in practical applications is the lowest-order Galerkin-mixed method, { in which a linear Lagrange FE approximation is used for the concentration and the lowest-order Raviart-Thomas FE approximation is used for the velocity/pressure. The previous works only showed the first-order accuracy of the method in $L^2$-norm in spatial direction,} which however is not optimal and valid only under certain extra restrictions on both time ste…
In this work, we develop a high-order pressure-robust method for the rotation form of the stationary incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The original idea is to change the velocity test functions in the discretization of trilinear and right hand side terms by using an H(div)-conforming velocity reconstruction operator. In order to match the rotation form and error analysis, a novel skew-symmetric discrete trilinear form containing the reconstruction operator is proposed, in which not only the velocity test function is changed. The corresponding well-posed discrete weak formulation stems st…
We propose a linearized semi-implicit and decoupled finite element method for the incompressible Navier--Stokes equations with variable density. Our method is fully discrete and shown to be unconditionally stable. The velocity equation is solved by an H1-conforming finite element method, and an upwind discontinuous Galerkin finite element method with post-processed velocity is adopted for the density equation. The proposed method is proved to be convergent in approximating reasonably smooth solutions in three-dimensional convex polyhedral domains.

Robust discretization methods for (nearly-incompressible) linear elasticity are free of volume-locking and gradient-robust. While volume-locking is a well-known problem that can be dealt with in many different discretization approaches, the concept of gradient-robustness for linear elasticity is new. We discuss both aspects and propose novel Hybrid Discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) methods for linear elasticity. The starting point for these methods is a divergence-conforming discretization. As a consequence of its well-behaved Stokes limit the method is gradient-robust and free of volume-locking. T…
A recent paper [J. A. Evans, D. Kamensky, Y. Bazilevs, "Variational multiscale modeling with discretely divergence-free subscales", Computers & Mathematics with Applications, 80 (2020) 2517-2537] introduced a novel stabilized finite element method for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, which combined residual-based stabilization of advection, energetic stability, and satisfaction of a discrete incompressibility condition. However, the convergence analysis and numerical tests of the cited work were subject to the restrictive assumption of a divergence-conforming choice of velocity and …

In the spirit of the "Principle of Equipresence" introduced by Truesdell & Toupin, The Classical Field Theories (1960), we use the full version of the viscous stress tensor which was originally derived for compressible flows, instead of the classical incompressible stress tensor. In our approach, the divergence-free constraint for the viscous stress term is not enforced ahead of discretization. Instead, our formulation allows the scheme itself to "choose" a consistent way to interpret the divergence-free constraint: i.e., the divergence-free constraint is interpreted (or enforced) in a consist…

The time discrete scheme of characteristics type is especially effective for convection-dominated diffusion problems. The scheme has been used in various engineering areas with different approximations in spatial direction. The lowest-order mixed method is the most popular one for miscible flow in porous media. The method is based on a linear Lagrange approximation to the concentration and the zero-order Raviart-Thomas approximation to the pressure/velocity. However, the optimal error estimate for the lowest-order characteristics-mixed FEM has not been presented although numerous effort has be…
In this work we consider the numerical solution of incompressible flows on two-dimensional manifolds. Whereas the compatibility demands of the velocity and the pressure spaces are known from the flat case one further has to deal with the approximation of a velocity field that lies only in the tangential space of the given geometry. Abandoning $H^1$-conformity allows us to construct finite elements which are -- due to an application of the Piola transformation -- exactly tangential. To reintroduce continuity (in a weak sense) we make use of (hybrid) discontinuous Galerkin techniques. To further…
The main drawback for the application of the conforming Argyris FEM is the labourious implementation on the one hand and the low convergence rates on the other. If no appropriate adaptive meshes are utilised, only the convergence rate caused by corner singularities [Blum and Rannacher, 1980], far below the approximation order for smooth functions, can be achieved. The fine approximation with the Argyris FEM produces high-dimensional linear systems and for a long time an optimal preconditioned scheme was not available for unstructured grids. This paper presents numerical benchmarks to confirm t…
The adaptive nonconforming Morley finite element method (FEM) approximates a regular solution to the von Kármán equations with optimal convergence rates for sufficiently fine triangulations and small bulk parameter in the Dörfler marking. This follows from the general axiomatic framework with the key arguments of stability, reduction, discrete reliability, and quasiorthogonality of an explicit residual-based error estimator. Particular attention is on the nonlinearity and the piecewise Sobolev embeddings required in the resulting trilinear form in the weak formulation of the nonconforming disc…
