We introduce a new hybridized discontinuous Galerkin method for the incompressible magnetohydrodynamics equations. If particular velocity, pressure, magnetic field, and magnetic pressure spaces are employed for both element and trace solution fields, we arrive at an energy stable method which returns pointwise divergence-free velocity fields and magnetic fields and properly balances linear momentum. We discretize in time using a second-order-in-time generalized-$α$ method, and we present a block iterative method for solving the resulting nonlinear system of equations at each time step. We numerically examine the effectiveness of our method using a manufactured solution and observe our method yields optimal convergence rates in the $L_2$ norm for the velocity field, pressure field, magnetic field, and magnetic pressure field. We further find our method is pressure robust. We then apply our method to a selection of benchmark problems and numerically confirm our method is energy stable.
In this paper we present new stability and optimal error analyses of hybridized discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) methods which do not require elliptic regularity assumptions. To obtain error estimates without elliptic regularity assumptions, we use new inf-sup conditions based on stabilized saddle point structures of HDG methods. We show that this approach can be applied to obtain optimal error estimates of HDG methods for the Poisson equations, the convection-reaction-diffusion equations, the Stokes equations, and the Oseen equations.
The mixed form of the Cahn-Hilliard equations is discretized by the hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method. For any chemical energy density, existence and uniqueness of the numerical solution is obtained. The scheme is proved to be unconditionally stable. Convergence of the method is obtained by deriving a priori error estimates that are valid for the Ginzburg-Lindau chemical energy density and for convex domains. The paper also contains discrete functional tools, namely discrete Agmon and Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequalities, which are proved to be valid in the hybridizable discontinuous Gale…
In this paper, we present a hybridized discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) method for Poisson-type problems with sign-changing coefficients. We introduce a sign-changing stabilization parameter that results in a stable HDG method independent of domain geometry and the ratio of the negative and positive coefficients. Since the Poisson-type problem with sign-changing coefficients is not elliptic, standard techniques with a duality argument to analyze the HDG method cannot be applied. Hence, we present a novel error analysis exploiting the stabilized saddle-point problem structure of the HDG method. Num…
A conforming discontinuous Galerkin (DG) finite element method has been introduced in [21] on simplicial meshes, which has the flexibility of using discontinuous approximation and the simplicity in formulation of the classic continuous finite element method. The goal of this paper is to extend the conforming DG finite element method in \cite{cdg1} so that it can work on general polytopal meshes by designing weak gradient $\nabla_w$ appropriately. Two different conforming DG formulations on polytopal meshes are introduced which handle boundary conditions differently. Error estimates of optimal …
In this paper, we present a conforming discontinuous Galerkin (CDG) finite element method for Brinkman equations. The velocity stabilizer is removed by employing the higher degree polynomials to compute the weak gradient. The theoretical analysis shows that the CDG method is actually stable and accurate for the Brinkman equations. Optimal order error estimates are established in $H^1$ and $L^2$ norm. Finally, numerical experiments verify the stability and accuracy of the CDG numerical scheme.
The quasi-static multiple network poroelastic theory (MPET) model, first introduced in the context of geomechanics, has recently found new applications in medicine. In practice, the parameters in the MPET equations can vary over several orders of magnitude which makes their stable discretization and fast solution a challenging task. Here, a new efficient parameter-robust hybridized discontinuous Galerkin method, which also features fluid mass conservation, is proposed for the MPET model. Its stability analysis which is crucial for the well-posedness of the discrete problem is performed and cos…
The under integration of the volume terms in the discontinuous Galerkin spectral element approximation introduces errors at non-conforming element faces that do not cancel and lead to free-stream preservation errors. We derive volume and face conditions on the geometry under which a constant state is preserved. From those, we catalog six special cases on the geometry that preserve a constant state, the most general being to approximate the geometry sub-parametrically to one half the order of the solution. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the results.

A new discontinuous Galerkin finite element method for the Stokes equations is developed in the primary velocity-pressure formulation. This method employs discontinuous polynomials for both velocity and pressure on general polygonal/polyhedral meshes. Most finite element methods with discontinuous approximation have one or more stabilizing terms for velocity and for pressure to guarantee stability and convergence. This new finite element method has the standard conforming finite element formulation, without any velocity or pressure stabilizers. Optimal-order error estimates are established for…

High-order entropy-stable discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods for nonlinear conservation laws reproduce a discrete entropy inequality by combining entropy conservative finite volume fluxes with summation-by-parts (SBP) discretization matrices. In the DG context, on tensor product (quadrilateral and hexahedral) elements, SBP matrices are typically constructed by collocating at Lobatto quadrature points. Recent work has extended the construction of entropy-stable DG schemes to collocation at more accurate Gauss quadrature points. In this work, we extend entropy-stable Gauss collocation schemes t…
We design and analyze a new adaptive stabilized finite element method. We construct a discrete approximation of the solution in a continuous trial space by minimizing the residual measured in a dual norm of a discontinuous test space that has inf-sup stability. We formulate this residual minimization as a stable saddle-point problem which delivers a stabilized discrete solution and a residual representation that drives the adaptive mesh refinement. Numerical results on an advection-reaction model problem show competitive error reduction rates when compared to discontinuous Galerkin methods on …
In this paper, a new $C^1$-conforming Petrov-Galerkin method for convection-diffusion equations is designed and analyzed. The trail space of the proposed method is a $C^1$-conforming ${\mathbb Q}_k$ (i.e., tensor product of polynomials of degree at most $k$) finite element space while the test space is taken as the $L^2$ (discontinuous) piecewise ${\mathbb Q}_{k-2}$ polynomial space. Existence and uniqueness of the numerical solution is proved and optimal error estimates in all $L^2, H^1, H^2$-norms are established. In addition, superconvergence properties of the new method are investigated an…
We propose a goal-oriented mesh-adaptive algorithm for a finite element method stabilized via residual minimization on dual discontinuous-Galerkin norms. By solving a saddle-point problem, this residual minimization delivers a stable continuous approximation to the solution on each mesh instance and a residual projection onto a broken polynomial space, which is a robust error estimator to minimize the discrete energy norm via automatic mesh refinement. In this work, we propose and analyze a goal-oriented adaptive algorithm for this stable residual minimization. We solve the primal and adjoint …

In this work we address the analysis of the stationary generalized Burgers-Huxley equation (a nonlinear elliptic problem with anomalous advection) and propose conforming, nonconforming and discontinuous Galerkin finite element methods for its numerical approximation. The existence, uniqueness and regularity of weak solutions is discussed in detail using a Faedo-Galerkin approach and fixed-point theory, and a priori error estimates for all three types of numerical schemes are rigorously derived. A set of computational results are presented to show the efficacy of the proposed methods.
We develop a general convergence theory for adaptive discontinuous Galerkin methods for elliptic PDEs covering the popular SIPG, NIPG and LDG schemes as well as all practically relevant marking strategies. Another key feature of the presented result is, that it holds for penalty parameters only necessary for the standard analysis of the respective scheme. The analysis is based on a quasi interpolation into a newly developed limit space of the adaptively created non-conforming discrete spaces, which enables to generalise the basic convergence result for conforming adaptive finite element method…
Time-dependent Maxwell's equations govern electromagnetics. Under certain conditions, we can rewrite these equations into a partial differential equation of second order, which in this case is the vectorial wave equation. For the vectorial wave, we investigate the numerical application and the challenges in the implementation. For this purpose, we consider a space-time variational setting, i.e. time is just another spatial dimension. More specifically, we apply integration by parts in time as well as in space, leading to a space-time variational formulation with different trial and test spaces…
We present a new enriched Galerkin (EG) scheme for the Stokes equations based on piecewise linear elements for the velocity unknowns and piecewise constant elements for the pressure. The proposed EG method augments the conforming piecewise linear space for velocity by adding an additional degree of freedom which corresponds to one discontinuous linear basis function per element. Thus, the total number of degrees of freedom is significantly reduced in comparison with standard conforming, non-conforming, and discontinuous Galerkin schemes for the Stokes equation. We show the well-posedness of th…

We consider the quasi-static Biot's consolidation model in a three-field formulation with the three unknown physical quantities of interest being the displacement $\boldsymbol{u}$ of the solid matrix, the seepage velocity $\boldsymbol{v}$ of the fluid and the pore pressure $p$. As conservation of fluid mass is a leading physical principle in poromechanics, we preserve this property using an $\boldsymbol{H}(\operatorname{div})$-conforming ansatz for $\boldsymbol{u}$ and $\boldsymbol{v}$ together with an appropriate pressure space. This results in Stokes and Darcy stability and exact, that is, p…
This work compares two Nitsche-type approaches to treat non-conforming triangulations for a high-order discontinuous Galerkin (DG) solver for the acoustic conservation equations. The first approach (point-to-point interpolation) uses inexact integration with quadrature points prescribed by a primary element. The second approach uses exact integration (mortaring) by choosing quadratures depending on the intersection between non-conforming elements. In literature, some excellent properties regarding performance and ease of implementation are reported for point-to-point interpolation. However, we…
