We consider the quasi-static Biot's consolidation model in a three-field formulation with the three unknown physical quantities of interest being the displacement $\boldsymbol{u}$ of the solid matrix, the seepage velocity $\boldsymbol{v}$ of the fluid and the pore pressure $p$. As conservation of fluid mass is a leading physical principle in poromechanics, we preserve this property using an $\boldsymbol{H}(\operatorname{div})$-conforming ansatz for $\boldsymbol{u}$ and $\boldsymbol{v}$ together with an appropriate pressure space. This results in Stokes and Darcy stability and exact, that is, pointwise mass conservation of the discrete model.
The proposed discretization technique combines a hybridized discontinuous Galerkin method for the elasticity subproblem with a mixed method for the flow subproblem, also handled by hybridization. The latter allows for a static condensation step to eliminate the seepage velocity from the system while preserving mass conservation. The system to be solved finally only contains degrees of freedom related to $\boldsymbol{u}$ and $p$ resulting from the hybridization process and thus provides, especially for higher-order approximations, a very cost-efficient family of physics-oriented space discretizations for poroelasticity problems.
We present the construction of the discrete model, theoretical results related to its uniform well-posedness along with optimal error estimates and parameter-robust preconditioners as a key tool for developing uniformly convergent iterative solvers. Finally, the cost-efficiency of the proposed approach is illustrated in a series of numerical tests for three-dimensional test cases.
We present residual-based a posteriori error estimates of mixed finite element methods for the three-field formulation of Biot's consolidation model. The error estimator is an upper and lower bound of the space time discretization error up to data oscillation. As a by-product, we also obtain new a posteriori error estimate of mixed finite element methods for the heat equation.
In this work, semi-discrete and fully-discrete error estimates are derived for the Biot's consolidation model described using a three-field finite element formulation. The fields include displacements, total stress and pressure. The model is implemented using a backward Euler discretization in time for the fully-discrete scheme and validated for benchmark examples. Computational experiments presented verifies the convergence orders for the lowest order finite elements with discontinuous and continuous finite element appropriation for the total stress.

This paper concentrates on a priori error estimates of two fully discrete coupled schemes for Biot's consolidation model based on the three-field formulation introduced by Oyarzua et al. (SIAM Journal on Numerical Analysis, 2016). The spatial discretizations are based on the Taylor-Hood finite elements combined with Lagrange elements for the three primary variables. For time discretization, we consider two methods. One uses the backward Euler method, and the other applies a combination of the backward Euler and Crank-Nicolson methods. A priori error estimates show that the two schemes are unco…
We present an embedded-hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin finite element method for the total pressure formulation of the quasi-static poroelasticity model. Although the displacement and the Darcy velocity are approximated by discontinuous piece-wise polynomials, $H(\text{div})$-conformity of these unknowns is enforced by Lagrange multipliers. The semi-discrete problem is shown to be stable and the fully discrete problem is shown to be well-posed. Additionally, space-time a priori error estimates are derived, and confirmed by numerical examples, that show that the proposed discretization is f…

In this paper, we propose a new multiphysics finite element method for a Biot model with secondary consolidation in soil dynamics. To better describe the processes of deformation and diffusion underlying in the original model, we reformulate Biot model by a new multiphysics approach, which transforms the fluid-solid coupled problem to a fluid coupled problem--a generalized Stokes problem and a diffusion problem. Then, we give the energy law and prior error estimate of the weak solution. And we design a fully discrete time-stepping scheme to use mixed finite element method for $P_2-P_1-P_1$ ele…

This work is concerned with the iterative solution of systems of quasi-static multiple-network poroelasticity (MPET) equations describing flow in elastic porous media that is permeated by single or multiple fluid networks. Here, the focus is on a three-field formulation of the problem in which the displacement field of the elastic matrix and, additionally, one velocity field and one pressure field for each of the $n \ge 1$ fluid networks are the unknown physical quantities. Generalizing Biot's model of consolidation, which is obtained for $n=1$, the MPET equations for $n\ge1$ exhibit a double …
We develop robust solvers for a class of perturbed saddle-point problems arising in the study of a second-order elliptic equation in mixed form (in terms of flux and potential), and of the four-field formulation of Biot's consolidation problem for linear poroelasticity (using displacement, filtration flux, total pressure and fluid pressure). The stability of the continuous variational mixed problems, which hinges upon using adequately weighted spaces, is addressed in detail; and the efficacy of the proposed preconditioners, as well as their robustness with respect to relevant material properti…
Linear poroelasticity models have a number of important applications in biology and geophysics. In particular, Biot's consolidation model is a well-known model that describes the coupled interaction between the linear response of a porous elastic medium and a diffusive fluid flow within it, assuming small deformations. Although deterministic linear poroelasticity models and finite element methods for solving them numerically have been well studied, there is little work to date on robust algorithms for solving poroelasticity models with uncertain inputs and for performing uncertainty quantifica…
