The Helmholtz transmission eigenvalue problem has received much concern in materials science, so it's significant to explore the efficient calculational method of the problem to mathematics and mechanics community. In this paper, based on a variational formulation proposed by Cakon, Monk and Sun, we introduce a mixed-element two-grid discretization and prove error estimates for this method theoretically. Some numerical results are presented to confirm the theoretical analysis and show that the method here is efficient.

This manuscript presents an efficient solver for the linear system that arises from the Hierarchical Poincaré-Steklov (HPS) discretization of three dimensional variable coefficient Helmholtz problems. Previous work on the HPS method has tied it with a direct solver. This work is the first efficient iterative solver for the linear system that results from the HPS discretization. The solution technique utilizes GMRES coupled with a locally homogenized block-Jacobi preconditioner. The local nature of the discretization and preconditioner naturally yield the matrix-free application of the linear s…
We study the unique solvability of the discretized Helmholtz problem with Robin boundary conditions using a conforming Galerkin $hp$-finite element method. Well-posedness of the discrete equations is typically investigated by applying a compact perturbation to the continuous Helmholtz problem so that a "sufficiently rich" discretization results in a "sufficiently small" perturbation of the continuous problem and well-posedness is inherited via Fredholm's alternative. The qualitative notion "sufficiently rich", however, involves unknown constants and is only of asymptotic nature. Our paper is f…

The simulation of high-dimensional problems with manageable computational resource represents a long-standing challenge. In a series of our recent work [25, 17, 18, 24], a class of sparse grid DG methods has been formulated for solving various types of partial differential equations in high dimensions. By making use of the multiwavelet tensor-product bases on sparse grids in conjunction with the standard DG weak formulation, such a novel method is able to significantly reduce the computation and storage cost compared with full grid DG counterpart, while not compromising accuracy much for suffi…
Time-harmonic solutions to the wave equation can be computed in the frequency or in the time domain. In the frequency domain, one solves a discretized Helmholtz equation, while in the time domain, the periodic solutions to a discretized wave equation are sought, e.g. by simulating for a long time with a time-harmonic forcing term. Disadvantages of the time-domain method are that the solutions are affected by temporal discretization errors and that the spatial discretization cannot be freely chosen, since it is inherited from the time-domain scheme. In this work we address these issues. Given a…
In this paper we develop a plane wave type method for discretization of homogeneous Helmholtz equations with variable wave numbers. In the proposed method, local basis functions (on each element) are constructed by the geometric optics ansatz such that they approximately satisfy a homogeneous Helmholtz equation without boundary condition. More precisely, each basis function is expressed as the product of an exponential plane wave function and a polynomial function, where the phase function in the exponential function approximately satisfies the eikonal equation and the polynomial factor is rec…

We present three high-order Nystrom discretization strategies of various boundary integral equation formulations of the impenetrable time-harmonic Navier equations in two dimensions. One class of such formulations is based on the four classical Boundary Integral Operators (BIOs) associated with the Green's function of the Navier operator. We consider two types of Nystrom discretizations of these operators, one that relies on Kussmaul-Martensen logarithmic splittings and the other on Alpert quadratures. In addition, we consider an alternative formulation of Navier scattering problems based on H…
Duality analysis of interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin methods under minimal regularity and application to the a priori and a posteriori error analysis of Helmholtz problems
In this article, discrete variants of several results from vector calculus are studied for classical finite difference summation by parts operators in two and three space dimensions. It is shown that existence theorems for scalar/vector potentials of irrotational/solenoidal vector fields cannot hold discretely because of grid oscillations, which are characterised explicitly. This results in a non-vanishing remainder associated to grid oscillations in the discrete Helmholtz Hodge decomposition. Nevertheless, iterative numerical methods based on an interpretation of the Helmholtz Hodge decomposi…
We develop a numerical method for solving the acoustic wave equation in covariant form on staggered curvilinear grids in an energy conserving manner. The use of a covariant basis decomposition leads to a rotationally invariant scheme that outperforms a Cartesian basis decomposition on rotated grids. The discretization is based on high order Summation-By-Parts (SBP) operators and preserves both symmetry and positive definiteness of the contravariant metric tensor. To improve accuracy and decrease computational cost, we also derive a modified discretization of the metric tensor that leads to a c…
Two numerical methods with graded temporal grids are analyzed for fractional evolution equations. One is a low-order discontinuous Galerkin (DG) discretization in the case of fractional order $0<α<1$, and the other one is a low-order Petrov Galerkin (PG) discretization in the case of fractional order $1<α<2$. By a new duality technique, pointwise-in-time error estimates of first-order and $ (3-α) $-order temporal accuracies are respectively derived for DG and PG, under reasonable regularity assumptions on the initial value. Numerical experiments are performed to verify the theoretical results.
One of the main tools for solving linear systems arising from the discretization of the Helmholtz equation is the shifted Laplace preconditioner, which results from the discretization of a perturbed Helmholtz problem $-Δu - (k^2 + i \varepsilon )u = f$ where $0 \neq \varepsilon \in \mathbb{R}$ is an absorption parameter. In this work we revisit the idea of combining the shifted Laplace preconditioner with two-level deflation and apply it to Helmholtz problems discretized with linear finite elements. We use the convergence theory of GMRES based on the field of values to prove that GMRES applied…

An Isogeometric Boundary Element Method (IgA-BEM) is considered for the numerical solution of Helmholtz problems on 3D bounded or unbounded domains, admitting a smooth conformal multi-patch representation of their finite boundary surface. The discretization space is formed by $C^0$ inter-patch continuous basis functions whose restriction to a patch simplifies to the span of tensor product B-splines composed with the given patch parameterization. For both regular and singular integration, the proposed model utilizes a numerical procedure defined on the support of each trial B-spline function, w…
Numerical resolution of exterior Helmholtz problems requires some approach to domain truncation. As an alternative to approximate nonreflecting boundary conditions and invocation of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map, we introduce a new, nonlocal boundary condition. This condition is exact and requires the evaluation of layer potentials involving the free space Green's function. However, it seems to work in general unstructured geometry, and Galerkin finite element discretization leads to convergence under the usual mesh constraints imposed by Gårding-type inequalities. The nonlocal boundary conditi…
In this paper, we extend the work of Brenner and Sung [Math. Comp. 59, 321--338 (1992)] and present a regularity estimate for the elastic equations in concave domains. Based on the regularity estimate we prove that the constants in the error estimates of the nonconforming Crouzeix-Raviart element approximations for the elastic equations/eigenvalue problem are independent of the Lame constant, which means the nonconforming Crouzeix-Raviart element approximations are locking-free. We also establish two kinds of two-grid discretization schemes for the elastic eigenvalue problem and analyze that w…
In this paper we revisit the Restricted Additive Schwarz method for solving discretized Helmholtz problems, using impedance boundary conditions on subdomains (sometimes called ORAS). We present this method in its variational form and show that it can be seen as a finite element discretization of a parallel overlapping domain decomposition method defined at the PDE level. In a fourthcoming paper, the authors have proved certain contractive properties of the error propagation operator for this method at the PDE level, under certain geometrical assumptions. We illustrate computationally that thes…
Symmetry-preserving (mimetic) discretization aims to preserve certain properties of a continuous differential operator in its discrete counterpart. For these discretizations, stability and (discrete) conservation of mass, momentum and energy are proven in the same way as for the original continuous model. This paper presents a new finite-difference symmetry-preserving space discretization. Boundary conditions and time integration are not addressed. The novelty is that it combines arbitrary order of convergence, orthogonal and non-orthogonal structured curvilinear staggered meshes, and the appl…

We introduce a novel multi-resolution Localized Orthogonal Decomposition (LOD) for time-harmonic acoustic scattering problems that can be modeled by the Helmholtz equation. The method merges the concepts of LOD and operator-adapted wavelets (gamblets) and proves its applicability for a class of complex-valued, non-hermitian and indefinite problems. It computes hierarchical bases that block-diagonalize the Helmholtz operator and thereby decouples the discretization scales. Sparsity is preserved by a novel localization strategy that improves stability properties even in the elliptic case. We pre…
