We use bounds on bilinear forms with Kloosterman fractions and improve the error term in the asymptotic formula of Balazard and Martin (2023) on the average value of the smallest denominators of rational numbers in short intervals.
In 2007, A.I.Aptekarev and his collaborators discovered a sequence of rational approximations to Euler's constant $γ$ defined by a linear recurrence. In this paper, we generalize this result and present an explicit construction of rational approximations for the numbers $\ln(b)-ψ(a+1),$ $a, b\in {\mathbb Q},$ $b>0, a>-1,$ where $ψ$ defines the logarithmic derivative of the Euler gamma function. We prove exact formulas for denominators and numerators of the approximations in terms of hypergeometric sums. As a consequence, we get rational approximations for the numbers $π/2\pmγ.$ We compare the …
A rational Diophantine m-tuple is a set of m nonzero rationals such that the product of any two of them increased by 1 is a perfect square. The first rational Diophantine quadruple was found by Diophantus, while Euler proved that there are infinitely many rational Diophantine quintuples. In 1999, Gibbs found the first example of a rational Diophantine sextuple, and in 2016 Dujella, Kazalicki, Mikić and Szikszai proved that there are infinitely many of them. In this paper, we prove that there exist infinitely many rational Diophantine sextuples such that the denominators of all the elements in …
We answer several questions of P. Erdos and R. Graham by showing that for any rational number r > 0, there exist integers n1, n2, ..., nk, k variable, where N < n1 < n2 < ... < nk < (e^r + o_r(1) ) N, such that r = 1/n1 + 1/n2 + ... + 1/nk. Moreover, we obtain the best-possible error term for the o_r(1), which is O_r(loglog N/log N).
We investigate the problem of best simultaneous Diophantine approximation under a constraint on the denominator, as proposed by Jurkat. New lower estimates for optimal approximation constants are given in terms of critical determinants of suitable star bodies. Tools are results on simultaneous Diophantine approximation of rationals by rationals with smaller denominator. Finally, the approximation results are applied to the decomposition of integer vectors.
We show that, for any fixed $\varepsilon > 0$ and almost all primes $p$, the $g$-ary expansion of any fraction $m/p$ with $\gcd(m,p) = 1$ contains almost all $g$-ary strings of length $k < (5/24 - \varepsilon) \log_g p$. This complements a result of J. Bourgain, S. V. Konyagin, and I. E. Shparlinski that asserts that, for almost all primes, all $g$-ary strings of length $k < (41/504 -\varepsilon) \log_g p$ occur in the $g$-ary expansion of $m/p$.
We propose the existence of an infinite class of exact analogues of the 3x+1 conjecture for rational numbers with fixed denominators. For some other denominators, there are several attracting cycles, which exhibit scaling and covariance phenomena. We analyze these phenomena in terms of results of Bohm, Sontacchi and Lagarias.
In this paper we consider error sums of the form \[\sum_{m=0}^{\infty} \varepsilon_m\Big( \,b_mα- \frac{a_m}{c_m}\,\Big) \,,\] where $α$ is a real number, $a_m$, $b_m$, $c_m$ are integers, and $\varepsilon_m=1$ or $\varepsilon_m ={(-1)}^m$. In particular, we investigate such sums for \[α\in \big\{ π, e,e^{1/2},e^{1/3},\dots, \log (1+t), ζ(2), ζ(3) \big\} \] and exhibit some connections between rational coefficients occurring in error sums for Apéry's continued fraction for $ζ(2)$ and well-known integer sequences. The concept of the paper generalizes the theory of ordinary error sums, which are…
We consider the question of approximating any real number $α$ by sums of $n$ rational numbers $\frac{a_1}{q_1} + \frac{a_2}{q_2} + ... + \frac{a_n}{q_n}$ with denominators $1 \leq q_1, q_2, ..., q_n \leq N$. This leads to an inquiry on approximating a real number by rational numbers with a prescribed number of prime factors in the denominator.
Following T. H. Chan, we consider the problem of approximation of a given rational fraction a/q by sums of several rational fractions a_1/q_1, ..., a_n/q_n with smaller denominators. We show that in the special cases of n=3 and n=4 and certain admissible ranges for the denominators q_1,..., q_n, one can improve a result of T. H. Chan by using a different approach.
We consider the problem of Diophantine approximation on semisimple algebraic groups by rational points with restricted numerators and denominators and establish a quantitative approximation result for all real points in the group by rational points with any prescribed denominator and an almost prime numerator.
We compute the probability mass function of the random variable which returns the smallest denominator of a reduced fraction in a randomly chosen real interval of radius $δ/2$. As an application, we prove that the expected value of the smallest denominator is asymptotic, as $δ\rightarrow 0$, to $(16/π^2)δ^{-1/2}.$
Resolving a conjecture of Zhi-Wei Sun, we prove that every rational number can be represented as a sum of distinct unit fractions whose denominators are practical numbers. The same method applies to allowed denominators that are closed under multiplication by two and include a multiple of every positive integer, including the odious numbers, evil numbers, Hardy-Ramanujan numbers, Jordan-Polya numbers, and fibbinary numbers.
Every positive rational number has representations as Egyptian fractions (sums of reciprocals of distinct positive integers) with arbitrarily many terms and with arbitrarily large denominators. However, such representations normally use a very sparse subset of the positive integers up to the largest demoninator. We show that for every positive rational there exist Egyptian fractions whose largest denominator is at most N and whose denominators form a positive proportion of the integers up to N, for sufficiently large N; furthermore, the proportion is within a small factor of best possible.
Let Q be an infinite set of positive integers. Denote by W(Q) the set of n-tuples of real numbers simultaneously tau-well approximable by infinitely many rationals with denominators in Q but only by finitely many rationals with denominators in the complement of Q. The Hausdorff dimension of the liminf set W(Q) is computed when tau > 2 + 1/n. A p-adic analogue of the problem is also studied.
We give a heuristic for the number of reduced rationals on Cantor's middle thirds set, with a fixed bound on the denominator. We also describe extensive numerical computations supporting this heuristic.
Let $b \ge 2$ and $\ell \ge 1$ be integers. We establish that there is an absolute real number $K$ such that all the partial quotients of the rational number $$ \prod_{h = 0}^\ell \, (1 - b^{-2^h}), $$ of denominator $b^{2^{\ell+1} - 1}$, do not exceed $\exp(K (\log b)^2 \sqrt{\ell} 2^{\ell/2})$.
In this paper we obtain a sharp upper bound for the number of solutions to a certain diophantine inequality involving fractions with power denominator. This problem is motivated by a conjecture of Zhao concerning the spacing of such fractions in short intervals and the large sieve for power modulus. As applications of our estimate we show Zhao's conjecture is true except for a set of small measure and give a new $\ell_1 \rightarrow \ell_2$ large sieve inequality for power modulus.
We give explicit and asymptotic lower bounds for the quantity $|e^{s/t}-M/N|$ by studying a generalized continued fraction expansion of $e^{s/t}$. In cases $|s|\geq 3$ we improve existing results by extracting a large common factor from the numerators and the denominators of the convergents of that generalized continued fraction.
An Egyptian fraction is a sum of distinct unit fractions (reciprocals of positive integers). We show that every rational number has Egyptian fraction representations where the number of terms is of the same order of magnitude as the largest denominator, improving a result from an earlier paper to best-possible form. We also settle, in best-possible form, the related problem of how small M_t(r) can be such that there is an Egyptian fraction representation of r with exactly t terms, the denominators of which are all at most M_t(r). We also consider the following problems posed by Erdos and Graha…
Let $b \geq 2$ be an integer and $S$ be a finite non-empty set of primes not containing divisors of $b$. For any non-dense set $A \subset [0,1)$ such that $A \cap \mathbb{Q}$ is invariant under $\times b$ operation, we prove the finiteness of rational numbers in $A$ whose denominators can only be divided by primes in $S$. A quantitative result on the largest prime divisors of the denominators of rational numbers in $A$ is also obtained.
We establish various new results on a problem proposed by K. Mahler in 1984 concerning rational approximation to fractal sets by rational numbers inside and outside the set in question, respectively. Some of them provide a natural continuation and improvement of recent results of Broderick, Fishman and Reich and Fishman and Simmons. A key feature is that many of our new results apply to more general, multi-dimensional fractal sets and require only mild assumptions on the iterated function system. Moreover we provide a non-trivial lower bound for the distance of a rational number $p/q$ outside …
We find an asymptotic formula for the number of rational points near planar curves. More precisely, if $f:\mathbb{R}\rightarrow\mathbb{R}$ is a sufficiently smooth function defined on the interval $[η,ξ]$, then the number of rational points with denominator no larger than $Q$ that lie within a $δ$-neighborhood of the graph of $f$ is shown to be asymptotically equivalent to $(ξ-η)δQ^2$.
We show that if $F(s)$ is a nondegenerate ordinary Dirichlet series with nonnegative coefficients and $F(k)$ is a rational number for all large enough positive integers $k$, then the denominators of those rational numbers are unbounded. In particular, our result holds for the Riemann zeta function over any arithmetic progression. These results are derived via upper bounds on associated Hankel determinants.

We study some subsets of rational points in an algebraic groups defined by open conditions on their projection in the finite adeles points. Using adelic mixing we are able to prove an equidistribution's result for the projection of these sets in the real points. As an application, we study the existence and the repartition of rational unitary matrices having a given denominator. We prove a local-global principle for this problem and the equirepartition of the sets of denominator n-matrices when they are not empty. Then we study the more complicated case of non simply-connected groups applying …
We generalize Dirichlet's diophantine approximation theorem to approximating any real number $α$ by a sum of two rational numbers $\frac{a_1}{q_1} + \frac{a_2}{q_2}$ with denominators $1 \leq q_1, q_2 \leq N$. This turns out to be related to the congruence equation problem $x y \equiv c \pmod q$ with $1 \leq x, y \leq q^{1/2 + ε}$.
For $c \in \mathbb{Q}$, consider the quadratic polynomial map $φ_c(x)=x^2-c$. Flynn, Poonen and Schaefer conjectured in 1997 that no rational cycle of $φ_c$ under iteration has length more than $3$. Here we discuss this conjecture using arithmetic and combinatorial means, leading to three main results. First, we show that if $φ_c$ admits a rational cycle of length $n \ge 3$, then the denominator of $c$ must be divisible by $16$. We then provide an upper bound on the number of periodic rational points of $φ_c$ in terms of the number of distinct prime factors of the denominator of $c$. Finally, …
The average value of the smallest denominator of a rational number belonging to the interval $](j-1)/N,j/N]$, where~$j=1,\dots, N$, is proved to be asymptotically equivalent to~$16π^{-2}\sqrt{N}$, when $N$ tends to infinity. The result had been conjectured in 1977 by Kruyswijk and Meijer.
For the computation of terms of the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff series $H = \log(e^Ae^B})$ some a priori knowledge about the denominators of the coefficients of the series can be beneficial. In this paper an explicit formula for the computation of common denominators for the rational coefficients of the homogeneous components of the series is derived. Explicit computations up to degree 30 show that the common denominators obtained by this formula are as small as possible, which suggests that the formula is in a sense optimal. The sequence of integers defined by the formula seems to be interesting…
We provide an upper bound on the uniform exponent of approximation to a triple (xi, xi^2, xi^3) by rational numbers with the same denominator, valid for any transcendental real number xi. This upper bound refines a previous result of Davenport and Schmidt. As a consequence, we get a sharper lower bound on the exponent of approximation of such a number xi by algebraic integers of degree at most 4.
Our purpose is to give an account of the $r$-tuple problem on the increasing sequence of reduced fractions having denominators bounded by a certain size and belonging to a fixed real interval. We show that when the size grows to infinity, the proportion of the $r$-tuples of consecutive denominators with components in certain apriori fixed arithmetic progressions with the same ratio approaches a limit, which is independent on the interval. The limit is given explicitly and it is completely described in a few particular instances.
On the twisted Fermat cubic, an elliptic divisibility sequence arises as the sequence of denominators of the multiples of a single rational point. We prove that the number of prime terms in the sequence is uniformly bounded. When the rational point is the image of another rational point under a certain 3-isogeny, all terms beyond the first fail to be primes.
Let D(n) be the set of all fractions in the unit interval whose denominator in lowest terms equals $n$. We evaluate the product of the values of the Gamma function at the points of D(n), as a function of $n$; the answer depends on whether or not $n$ is a prime power.
Bourgain, Konyagin and Shparlinski obtained a lower bound for the size of the product set AB when A and B are sets of positive rational numbers with numerator and denominator less or equal than Q. We extend and slightly improve that lower bound using a different approach.
It is shown that $c=-29/16$ is the unique rational number of smallest denominator, and the unique rational number of smallest numerator, for which the map $f_c(x) = x^2+c$ has a rational periodic point of period $3$. Several arithmetic conditions on the set of all such rational numbers $c$ and the rational orbits of $f_c(x)$ are proved. A graph on the numerators of the rational $3$-periodic points of maps $f_c$ is considered which reflects connections between solutions of norm equations from the cubic field of discriminant $-23$.
Hilbert showed that for most $(n,m)$ there exist psd forms $p(x_1,...,x_n)$ of degree $m$ which cannot be written as a sum of squares of forms. His 17th problem asked whether, in this case, there exists a form $h$ so that $h^2p$ is a sum of squares of forms; that is, $p$ is a sum of squares of rational functions with denominator $h$. We show that, for every such $(n,m)$ there does not exist a single form $h$ which serves in this way as a denominator for {\it every} psd $p(x_1,...,x_n)$ of degree $m$.
Zaremba's Conjecture concerns the formation of continued fractions with partial quotients restricted to a given alphabet. In order to answer the numerous questions that arrive from this conjecture, it is best to consider a semi-group, often denoted $Γ_{A}$, which arises naturally as a subset of $SL_2(\mathbb{Z})$ when considering finite continued fractions. To translate back from this semi-group into rational numbers, we select a projection mapping satisfying certain criteria to recover the numerator and denominator of the continued fractions in rational form. The central question of our resea…
We obtain upper bounds for the fourth and higher moments of short exponential sums involving Fourier coefficients of holomorphic cusp forms twisted by rational additive twists with small denominators.
Let $\mathscr{M}$ be a compact submanifold of $\mathbb{R}^{M}$. In this article we establish an asymptotic formula for the number of rational points within a given distance to $\mathscr{M}$ and with bounded denominators under the assumption that $\mathscr{M}$ fulfills a certain curvature condition. Our result generalizes earlier work from Schindler and Yamagishi, as our curvature condition is a relaxation of that used by them. We are able to recover a similar result concerning a conjecture by Huang and a slightly weaker analogue of Serre's dimension growth conjecture for compact submanifolds o…
