3x+1 dynamics on rationals with fixed denominator

We propose the existence of an infinite class of exact analogues of the 3x+1 conjecture for rational numbers with fixed denominators. For some other denominators, there are several attracting cycles, which exhibit scaling and covariance phenomena. We analyze these phenomena in terms of results of Bohm, Sontacchi and Lagarias.

Rational numbers in $\times b$-invariant sets

Let $b \geq 2$ be an integer and $S$ be a finite non-empty set of primes not containing divisors of $b$. For any non-dense set $A \subset [0,1)$ such that $A \cap \mathbb{Q}$ is invariant under $\times b$ operation, we prove the finiteness of rational numbers in $A$ whose denominators can only be divided by primes in $S$. A quantitative result on the largest prime divisors of the denominators of rational numbers in $A$ is also obtained.

Denominator bounds in Thompson-like groups and flows

Let T denote Thompson's group of piecewise 2-adic linear homeomorphisms of the circle. Ghys and Sergiescu showed that the rotation number of every element of T is rational, but their proof is very indirect. We give here a short, direct proof using train tracks, which generalizes to PL homeomorphism of the circle with rational break points and derivatives which are powers of some fixed integer, and also to certain flows on surfaces which we call "Thompson-like". Dynamics of a rational system of difference equations in the plane

We consider a rational system of first order difference equations in the plane with four parameters such that all fractions have a common denominator. We study, for the different values of the parameters, the global and local properties of the system. In particular, we discuss the boundedness and the asymptotic behavior of the solutions, the existence of periodic solutions and the stability of equilibria.

Quadratic Irrationals, Generating Functions, and Lévy Constants

We show that the generating function corresponding to the sequence of denominators of the best rational approximants of a quadratic irrational is a rational function with integer coefficients. Consequently we can compute the Lévy constant of any quadratic irrational explicitly in terms of a finite number of its convergents.

Invariant quadrics and orbits for a family of rational systems of difference equations

We study the existence of invariant quadrics for a class of systems of difference equations in ${\mathbb R}^n$ defined by linear fractionals sharing denominator. Such systems can be described in terms of some square matrix $A$ and we prove that there is a correspondence between non-degenerate invariant quadrics and solutions to a certain matrix equation involving $A$. We show that if $A$ is semisimple and the corresponding system admits non-degenerate quadrics, then every orbit of the dynamical system is contained either in an invariant affine variety or in an invariant quadric.
