By using a jump transformation associated to the Romik map, we define a new continued fraction algorithm called odd-odd continued fraction, whose principal convergents are rational numbers of odd denominators and odd numerators. Among others, it is proved that all the best approximating rationals of odd denominators and odd numerators of an irrational number are given by the principal convergents of the odd-odd continued fraction algorithm and vice versa.
The Brjuno function was introduced by Yoccoz to study the linearizability of holomorphic germs and other one-dimensional small divisor problems. The Brjuno functions associated with various continued fractions including the by-excess continued fraction were subsequently investigated: it was conjectured that the difference between the classical Brjuno function and the even part of the Brjuno function associated with the by-excess continued fraction extends to a Hölder continuous function of the whole real line. In this paper, we prove this conjecture and we extend its validity to the more gener…
We prove results concerning the joint limiting distribution of the renewal time of denominators and consecutive digits of random irrational numbers in the case of continued fractions with even partial quotients, with odd partial quotients, and for Nakada's α-expansions.
This paper investigates the quadratic irrationals that arise as periodic points of the Gauss type shift associated to the odd continued fraction expansion. It is shown that these numbers, which we call O-reduced, when ordered by the length of the associated closed primitive geodesic on some modular surface $Γ\backslash \mathbb{H}$, are equidistributed with respect to the Lebesgue absolutely continuous invariant probability measure of the Odd Gauss shift.
We study analogues of Minkowski's question mark function $?(x)$ related to continued fractions with even or odd partial quotients. We prove that these functions are Hölder continuous with precise exponents, and that they linearize the appropriate versions of the Gauss and Farey maps.
The connection between geodesics on the modular surface $\operatorname{PSL}(2,{\mathbb Z})\backslash {\mathbb H}$ and regular continued fractions, established by Series, is extended to a connection between geodesics on $Γ\backslash {\mathbb H}$ and odd and grotesque continued fractions, where $Γ\cong {\Bbb Z}_3 \ast {\Bbb Z}_3$ is the index two subgroup of $\operatorname{PSL}(2,{\mathbb Z})$ generated by the order three elements $\left( \begin{smallmatrix} 0 & -1 \\ 1 & 1 \end{smallmatrix} \right)$ and $\left( \begin{smallmatrix} 0 & 1 \\ -1 & 1 \end{smallmatrix} \right)$, having an ideal quad…
We adjust Arnoux's coding, in terms of regular continued fractions, of the geodesic flow on the modular surface to give a cross section on which the return map is a double cover of the natural extension for the α-continued fractions, for each $α$ in (0,1]. The argument is sufficiently robust to apply to the Rosen continued fractions and their recently introduced α-variants.
We prove the convergence and ergodicity of a wide class of real and higher-dimensional continued fraction algorithms, including folded and $α$-type variants of complex, quaternionic, octonionic, and Heisenberg continued fractions, which we combine under the framework of Iwasawa continued fractions. The proof is based on the interplay of continued fractions and hyperbolic geometry, the ergodicity of geodesic flow in associated modular manifolds, and a variation on the notion of geodesic coding that we refer to as geodesic marking. As a corollary of our study of markable geodesics, we obtain a g…
Adler, Keane, and Smorodinsky showed that if one concatenates the finite continued fraction expansions of the sequence of rationals \[ \frac{1}{2}, \frac{1}{3}, \frac{2}{3}, \frac{1}{4}, \frac{2}{4}, \frac{3}{4}, \frac{1}{5}, \cdots \] into an infinite continued fraction expansion, then this new number is normal with respect to the continued fraction expansion. We show a variety of new constructions of continued fraction normal numbers, including one generated by the subsequence of rationals with prime numerators and denominators: \[ \frac{2}{3}, \frac{2}{5}, \frac{3}{5}, \frac{2}{7}, \frac{3}…
We show the ergodicity of Tanaka-Ito type $α$-continued fraction maps and construct their natural extensions. We also discuss the relation between entropy and the size of the natural extension domain.
We prove a quantitative distortion theorem for iterated function systems that generate sets of continued fractions. As a consequence, we obtain upper and lower bounds on the Hausdorff dimension of any set of real or complex continued fractions. These bounds are solutions to Moran-type equations in the convergents that can be easily implemented in a computer algebra system.
We study large deviation asymptotics for processes defined in terms of continued fraction digits. We use the continued fraction digit sum process to define a stopping time and derive a joint large deviation asymptotic for the upper and lower fluctuation process. Also a large deviation asymptotic for single digits is given.
We establish arithmetical properties and provide essential bounds for bi-sequences of approximation coefficients associated with the natural extension of maps, leading to continued fraction-like expansions. These maps are realized as the fractional part of M$\operatorname{\ddot{o}}$bius transformations which carry the end points of the unit interval to zero and infinity, extending the classical regular and backwards continued fractions expansions.
The purpose of this paper is to describe the relation between the Legendre and the Lenstra constants. Indeed we show that they are equal whenever the Legendre constant exists; in particular, this holds for both Rosen continued fractions and $α$-continued fractions. We also give the explicit value of the entropy of the Rosen map with respect to the absolutely continuous invariant probability measure.
We study the strong convergence of certain multidimensional continued fraction algorithms. In particular, in the two-dimensional case, we prove that the second Lyapunov exponent of Selmer's algorithm is negative and bound it away from zero. Moreover, we give heuristic results on several other continued fraction algorithms. Our results indicate that all classical multidimensional continued fraction algorithms cease to be strongly convergent for high dimensions. The only exception seems to be the Arnoux-Rauzy algorithm which, however, is defined only on a set of measure zero.
The Hurwitz complex continued fraction is a generalization of the nearest integer continued fraction. In this paper we prove various results concerning extremes of the modulus of Hurwitz complex continued fraction digits. This includes a Poisson law and an extreme value law. The results are based on cusp estimates of the invariant measure about which information is still limited. In the process, we get several results concerning extremes of nearest integer continued fractions as well.
We introduce a random dynamical system related to continued fraction expansions. It uses random combination of the Gauss map and the Rényi (or backwards) continued fraction map. We explore the continued fraction expansions that this system produces as well as the dynamical properties of the system.
We continue the study of random continued fraction expansions, generated by random application of the Gauss and the Rényi backward continued fraction maps. We show that this random dynamical system admits a unique absolutely continuous invariant measure with smooth density.
We provide a generalization of continued fractions to the Heisenberg group. We prove an explicit estimate on the rate of convergence of the infinite continued fraction and several surprising analogs of classical formulas about continued fractions. We then discuss dynamical properties of the associated Gauss map, comparing them with base-$b$ expansions on the Heisenberg group and continued fractions on the complex plane.
In an article (which we will refer to as [BM]) of Boca and the fourth author of this paper, a new class of continued fraction expansions with odd partial quotients, parameterized by a parameter $α\in [g,G]$, where $g=\tfrac{1}{2}(\sqrt{5}-1)$ and $G=g+1=1/g$ are the two golden mean numbers is introduced. In this article, by using operations called singularizations and insertions on the partial quotients of the odd continued fraction expansions under consideration, the natural extensions from [BM] are obtained, and it is shown that for each $α,α^*\in [g,G]$ the natural extensions from [BM] are …
We study, from the viewpoint of metrical number theory and (infinite) ergodic theory, the probabilistic laws governing the occurrence of prime numbers as digits in continued fraction expansions of real numbers.
In this paper, we consider two dynamical systems associated to the nearest integer continued fraction, and show that both of them have full Hausdorff dimension spectrum.
Following Schweiger's generalization of multidimensional continued fraction algorithms, we consider a very large family of $p$-adic multidimensional continued fraction algorithms, which include Schneider's algorithm, Ruban's algorithms, and the $p$-adic Jacobi-Perron algorithm as special cases. The main result is to show that all the transformations in the family are ergodic with respect to the Haar measure.
We discuss some ergodic properties of the generalized Gauss transformation $$T_N(x)=\{\frac{N}{x}\}.$$ We generalize a series of results for the regular continued fractions, such as Khinchin's constant and Lévy's constant.
In this paper we give a geometric interpretation of the renormalization algorithm and of the continued fraction map that we introduced in arxiv:0905.0871 to give a characterization of symbolic sequences for linear flows in the regular octagon. We interpret this algorithm as renormalization on the Teichmueller disk of the octagon and explain the relation with Teichmueller geodesic flow. This connection is analogous to the classical relation between Sturmian sequences, continued fractions and geodesic flow on the modular surface. We use this connection to construct the natural extension and the …
To the Renyi or backward continued fraction transformation we associate a parabolic iterated function system whose limit set has Hausdorff dimension 1. We show that the Texan Conjecture holds, i.e. for every t in1] there exists a subsystem whose limit set has Hausdorff dimension t
