Temporal correlation for randomly growing interfaces in the KPZ universality class is a topic of recent interest. Most of the works so far have been concentrated on the zero temperature model of exponential last passage percolation, and three special initial conditions, namely droplet, flat and stationary. We focus on studying the time correlation problem for generic random initial conditions with diffusive growth. We formulate our results in terms of the positive temperature exactly solvable model of the inverse-gamma polymer and obtain up to constant upper and lower bounds for the correlation between the free energy of two polymers whose endpoints are close together or far apart. Our proofs apply almost verbatim to the zero temperature set-up of exponential LPP and are valid for a broad class of initial conditions. Our work complements and completes the partial results obtained in (Ferrari-Occelli'19), following the conjectures of (Ferrari-Spohn'16). Moreover, our arguments rely on the one-point moderate deviation estimates which have recently been obtained using stationary polymer techniques and thus do not depend on complicated exact formulae.
We consider the upper and lower tail probabilities for the centered (by time$/24$) and scaled (according to KPZ time$^{1/3}$ scaling) one-point distribution of the Cole-Hopf solution of the KPZ equation when started with initial data drawn from a very general class. For the lower tail, we prove an upper bound which demonstrates a crossover from super-exponential decay with exponent $3$ in the shallow tail to an exponent $5/2$ in the deep tail. For the upper tail, we prove super-exponential decay bounds with exponent $3/2$ at all depth in the tail.
We show that the law of the KPZ fixed point starting from arbitrary initial condition is absolutely continuous with respect to the law of Brownian motion $B$ on every compact interval. In particular, the Airy$_1$ process is absolutely continuous with respect to $B$ on any compact interval.
For stationary KPZ growth in 1+1 dimensions the height fluctuations are governed by the Baik-Rains distribution. Using the totally asymmetric single step growth model, alias TASEP, we investigate height fluctuations for a general class of spatially homogeneous random initial conditions. We prove that for TASEP there is a one-parameter family of limit distributions, labeled by the diffusion coefficient of the initial conditions. The distributions are defined through a variational formula. We use Monte Carlo simulations to obtain their numerical plots. Also discussed is the connection to the six…
We consider the asymptotic behavior of the KPZ fixed point $\{\mathsf H(x,t)\}_{x\in\mathbb R, t>0}$ conditioned on $\mathsf H(0,T)=L$ as $L$ goes to infinity. The main result is a conditional limit theorem for the fluctuations of $\mathsf H$ in the region near the line segment connecting the origin $(0,0)$ and $(0,T)$ for both step and flat initial conditions. The limit random field can be represented as a functional of two independent Brownian bridges, and in addition the limit random field depends also on the initial law of the KPZ fixed point. In particular for temporal fluctuations, the l…
In 2002, Johansson conjectured that the maximum of the Airy$_2$ process minus the parabola $x^2$ is almost surely achieved at a unique location. This result was proved a decade later by Corwin and Hammond; Moreno Flores, Quastel and Remenik; and Pimentel. Up to scaling, the Airy$_2$ process minus the parabola $x^2$ arises as the fixed time spatial marginal of the KPZ fixed point when started from narrow wedge initial data. We extend this maximizer uniqueness result to the fixed time spatial marginal of the KPZ fixed point when begun from any element of a very broad class of initial data. None …
We consider two versions of discrete time totally asymmetric simple exclusion processes (TASEPs) with geometric and Bernoulli random hopping probabilities. For the process mixed with these and continuous time dynamics, we obtain a single Fredholm determinant representation for the joint distribution function of particle positions with arbitrary initial data. This formula is a generalization of the recent result by Mateski, Quastel and Remenik and allows us to take the KPZ scaling limit. For both the discrete time geometric and Bernoulli TASEPs, we show that the distribution function converges …
In this paper we consider the limiting distribution of KPZ growth models with random but not stationary initial conditions introduced in [Chhita-Ferrari-Spohn 2018]. The one-point distribution of the limit is given in terms of a variational problem. By directly studying it, we deduce the right tail asymptotic of the distribution function. This gives a rigorous proof and extends the results obtained in [Meerson-Schmidt 2017].
Let H(t,x) be the Hopf-Cole solution at time t of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation starting with narrow wedge initial condition, i.e. the logarithm of the solution of the multiplicative stochastic heat equation starting from a Dirac delta. Also let H^{eq}(t,x) be the solution at time t of the KPZ equation with the same noise, but with initial condition given by a standard two-sided Brownian motion, so that H^{eq}(t,x)-H^{eq}(0,x) is itself distributed as a standard two-sided Brownian motion. We provide a simple proof of the following fact: for fixed t, H(t,x)-(H(t,x)-H^{eq}(t,0)) is loca…
For each $t\geq 1$ we construct an $\mathbf{N}$-indexed ensemble of random continuous curves with three properties: 1. The lowest indexed curve is distributed as the time $t$ Hopf-Cole solution to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) stochastic PDE with narrow wedge initial data; 2. The entire ensemble satisfies a resampling invariance which we call the $\mathbf{H}$-Brownian Gibbs property (with $\mathbf{H}(x)=e^{x}$); 3. Increments of the lowest indexed curve, when centered by $-t/24$ and scaled down vertically by $t^{1/3}$ and horizontally by $t^{2/3}$, remain uniformly absolutely continuous (i.e. …
Fredholm determinants associated to deformations of the Airy kernel are closely connected to the solution to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation with narrow wedge initial data, and they also appear as largest particle distribution in models of positive-temperature free fermions. We show that logarithmic derivatives of the Fredholm determinants can be expressed in terms of a 2x2 Riemann-Hilbert problem, and we use this to derive asymptotics for the Fredholm determinants. As an application of our result, we derive precise lower tail asymptotics for the solution of the KPZ equation with narrow…
The early time regime of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation in $1+1$ dimension, starting from a Brownian initial condition with a drift $w$, is studied using the exact Fredholm determinant representation. For large drift we recover the exact results for the droplet initial condition, whereas a vanishingly small drift describes the stationary KPZ case, recently studied by weak noise theory (WNT). We show that for short time $t$, the probability distribution $P(H,t)$ of the height $H$ at a given point takes the large deviation form $P(H,t) \sim \exp{\left(-Φ(H)/\sqrt{t} \right)}$. We obtain …
It was recently proved in [Corwin-Shen, 2016] that under weak asymmetry scaling, the height functions for open ASEP on the half-line and on a bounded interval converge to the Hopf-Cole solution of the KPZ equation with Neumann boundary conditions. In their assumptions [Corwin-Shen, 2016] chose positive values for the Neumann boundary conditions, and they assumed initial data which is close to stationarity. By developing more extensive heat-kernel estimates, we extend their results to negative values of the Neumann boundary parameters, and we also show how to generalize their results to narrow-…
We present an exact solution for the height distribution of the KPZ equation at any time $t$ in a half space with flat initial condition. This is equivalent to obtaining the free energy distribution of a polymer of length $t$ pinned at a wall at a single point. In the large $t$ limit a binding transition takes place upon increasing the attractiveness of the wall. Around the critical point we find the same statistics as in the Baik-Ben--Arous-Péché transition for outlier eigenvalues in random matrix theory. In the bound phase, we obtain the exact measure for the endpoint and the midpoint of the…
There have been recently several works studying the regularized stochastic heat equation (SHE) and Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation in dimension $d\geq 3$ as the smoothing parameter is switched off, but most of the results did not hold in the full temperature regions where they should. Inspired by martingale techniques coming from the directed polymers literature, we first extend the law of large numbers for SHE obtained in [MSZ16] to the full weak disorder region of the associated polymer model and to more general initial conditions. We further extend the Edwards-Wilkinson regime of the SHE…
We consider the KPZ fixed point starting from a general class of initial data. In this article, we study the growth of the large peaks of the KPZ fixed point at a spatial point $0$ when time $t$ goes to $\infty$ and when $t$ approaches $1$. We prove that for a very broad class of initial data, as $t\to \infty$, the limsup of the KPZ fixed point height function when scaled by $t^{1/3}(\log\log t)^{2/3}$ almost surely equals a constant. The value of the constant is $(3/4)^{2/3}$ or $(3/2)^{2/3}$ depending on the initial data being non-random or Brownian respectively. Furthermore, we show that th…
Time correlations for KPZ growth in 1+1 dimensions are reconsidered. We discuss flat, curved, and stationary initial conditions and are interested in the covariance of the height as a function of time at a fixed point on the substrate. In each case the power laws of the covariance for short and long times are obtained. They are derived from a variational problem involving two independent Airy processes. For stationary initial conditions we derive an exact formula for the stationary covariance with two approaches: (1) the variational problem and (2) deriving the covariance of the time-integrate…
We compute the one-point probability distribution for the stationary KPZ equation (i.e. initial data H(0,X)=B(X), for B(X) a two-sided standard Brownian motion) and show that as time T goes to infinity, the fluctuations of the height function H(T,X) grow like T^{1/3} and converge to those previously encountered in the study of the stationary totally asymmetric simple exclusion process, polynuclear growth model and last passage percolation. The starting point for this work is our derivation of a Fredholm determinant formula for Macdonald processes which degenerates to a corresponding formula fo…
Let $\mathfrak h_t$ be the KPZ fixed point started from any initial condition that guarantees $\mathfrak h_t$ has a maximum at every time $t$ almost surely. For any fixed $t$, almost surely $\max \mathfrak h_t$ is uniquely attained. However, there are exceptional times $t \in (0, \infty)$ when $\max \mathfrak h_t$ is achieved at multiple points. Let $\mathcal T_k \subset (0, \infty)$ denote the set of times when $\max \mathfrak h_t$ is achieved at exactly $k$ points. We show that almost surely $\mathcal T_2$ has Hausdorff dimension $2/3$ and is dense, $\mathcal T_3$ has Hausdorff dimension $1/…
We consider the Cole-Hopf solution of the (1+1)-dimensional KPZ equation started from the narrow wedge initial condition. In this article, we ask how the peaks and valleys of the KPZ height function (centered by time/24) at any spatial point grow as time increases. Our first main result is about the law of iterated logarithms for the KPZ equation. As time variable $t$ goes to $\infty$, we show that the limsup of the KPZ height function with the scaling by $t^{1/3}(\log\log t)^{2/3}$ is almost surely equal to $(\frac{3}{4\sqrt{2}})^{2/3}$ whereas the liminf of the height function with the scali…
We study the long-time regime of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation in $1+1$ dimensions for the Brownian and droplet initial conditions and present a simple derivation of the tail of the large deviations of the height on the negative side $λH<0$. We show that for both initial conditions, the cumulative distribution functions take a large deviations form, with a tail for $- \tilde s \gg 1$ given by $-\log \mathbb{P}\left(\frac{H}{t}<\tilde{s}\right)=t^2 \frac{4 }{15 π} (-\tilde{s})^{5/2} $. This exact expression was already observed at small time for both initial conditions suggesting that …
Infinitesimal perturbations in various systems showing spatiotemporal chaos (STC) evolve following the power laws of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class. While universal properties beyond the power-law exponents, such as distributions and correlations, and their geometry dependence, are established for random growth and related KPZ systems, the validity of these findings to deterministic chaotic perturbations is unknown. Here we fill this gap between stochastic KPZ systems and deterministic STC perturbations by conducting extensive simulations of a prototypical STC system, namely …
The solution of Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation (KPZ equation) is solved formally via Cole-Hopf transformation $h=\log u$, where $u$ is the solution of multiplicative stochastic heat equation(SHE). In earlier works by Chatterjee and Dunlap, Caravenna, Sun, and Zygouras, and Gu, they consider the solution of two dimensional KPZ equation via the solution $u_\varepsilon$ of SHE with flat initial condition and with noise which is mollified in space on scale in $\varepsilon$ and its strength is weakened as $β_\varepsilon=\hatβ \sqrt{\frac{2π\varepsilon}{-\log \varepsilon}}$, and they prove that when $…
We consider the asymmetric simple exclusion process on $\mathbb{Z}$ with a single second class particle initially at the origin. The first class particles form two rarefaction fans which come together at the origin, where the large time density jumps from $0$ to $1$. We are interested in $X(t)$, the position of the second class particle at time $t$. We show that, under the KPZ $1/3$ scaling, $X(t)$ is asymptotically distributed as the difference of two independent, $\mathrm{GUE}$-distributed random variables. The key part of the proof is to show that $X(t)$ equals, up to a negligible term, the …
Interacting particle systems in the KPZ universality class on a ring of size $L$ with $O(L)$ number of particles are expected to change from KPZ dynamics to equilibrium dynamics at the so-called relaxation time scale $t=O(L^{3/2})$. In particular the system size is expected to have little effect to the particle fluctuations in the sub-relaxation time scale $t\ll L^{3/2}$. We prove that this is indeed the case for the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (TASEP) with two types of initial conditions. For flat initial condition, we show that the particle fluctuations are given by the Airy$…
We study the $(1+1)$-dimensional Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) interfaces growing inward from ring-shaped initial conditions, experimentally and numerically, using growth of a turbulent state in liquid-crystal electroconvection and an off-lattice Eden model, respectively. To realize the ring initial condition experimentally, we introduce a holography-based technique that allows us to design the initial condition arbitrarily. Then, we find that fluctuation properties of ingrowing circular interfaces are distinct from those for the curved or circular KPZ subclass and, instead, are characterized by t…
We consider the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) on $\mathbb{Z}$. For continuous densities, ASEP is in local equilibrium for large times, at discontinuities however, one expects to see a dynamical phase transition, i.e. a mixture of different equilibriums. We consider ASEP with deterministic initial data such that at large times, two rarefactions come together at the origin, and the density jumps from $0$ to $1$. Shifting the measure on the KPZ $1/3$ scale, we show that the law of ASEP converges to a mixture of the Dirac measures with only holes resp. only particles. The parameter of…
This paper extends work by Tracy and Widom on blocks in the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) to the case of step-Bernoulli initial condition. We consider the probability that a particle at site $x$ is the beginning of a block of $L$ consecutive particles at time $t$ in ASEP with step-Bernoulli initial condition. A Fredholm determinant representation for this probability is derived, and the asymptotics are computed for the KPZ regime.
We study a model, introduced initially by Gates and Westcott to describe crystal growth evolution, which belongs to the Anisotropic KPZ universality class. It can be thought of as a $(2+1)$-dimensional generalisation of the well known (1+1)-dimensional Polynuclear Growth Model (PNG). We show the full hydrodynamic limit of this process i.e the convergence of the random interface height profile after ballistic space-time scaling to the viscosity solution of a Hamilton-Jacobi PDE: $\partial_tu = v(\nabla u)$ with $v$ an explicit non-convex speed function. The convergence holds in the strong almos…
We consider the weakly asymmetric limit of simple exclusion process with drift to the left, starting from step Bernoulli initial data with $ρ_-<ρ_+$ so that macroscopically one has a rarefaction fan. We study the fluctuations of the process observed along slopes in the fan, which are given by the Hopf--Cole solution of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation, with appropriate initial data. For slopes strictly inside the fan, the initial data is a Dirac delta function and the one point distribution functions have been computed in [Comm. Pure Appl. Math. 64 (2011) 466-537] and [Nuclear Phys. B 83…
We investigate the short-time regime of the KPZ equation in $1+1$ dimensions and develop a unifying method to obtain the height distribution in this regime, valid whenever an exact solution exists in the form of a Fredholm Pfaffian or determinant. These include the droplet and stationary initial conditions in full space, previously obtained by a different method. The novel results concern the droplet initial condition in a half space for several Neumann boundary conditions: hard wall, symmetric, and critical. In all cases, the height probability distribution takes the large deviation form $P(H…
We consider the exactly solvable model of exponential directed last passage percolation on $\mathbb{Z}^2$ in the large deviation regime. Conditional on the upper tail large deviation event $\mathcal{U}_δ:=\{T_{n}\geq (4+δ)n\}$ where $T_{n}$ denotes the last passage time from $(1,1)$ to $(n,n)$, we study the geometry of the polymer/geodesic $Γ_{n}$, i.e., the optimal path attaining $T_{n}$. We show that conditioning on $\mathcal{U}_δ$ changes the transversal fluctuation exponent from the characteristic $2/3$ of the KPZ universality class to $1/2$, i.e., conditionally, the smallest strip around …
We study fluctuations of interfaces in the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class with curved initial conditions. By simulations of a cluster growth model and experiments of liquid-crystal turbulence, we determine the universal scaling functions that describe the height distribution and the spatial correlation of the interfaces growing outward from a ring. The scaling functions, controlled by a single dimensionless time parameter, show crossover from the statistical properties of the flat interfaces to those of the circular interfaces. Moreover, employing the KPZ variational formula to d…
This paper extends results of earlier work on ASEP to the case of step Bernoulli initial condition. The main results are a representation in terms of a Fredholm determinant for the probability distribution of a fixed particle, and asymptotic results which in particular establish KPZ universality for this probability in one regime. (And, as a corollary, for the current fluctuations.)
Brownian motion is a continuum scaling limit for a wide class of random processes, and there has been great success in developing a theory for its properties (such as distribution functions or regularity) and expanding the breadth of its universality class. Over the past twenty five years a new universality class has emerged to describe a host of important physical and probabilistic models (including one dimensional interface growth processes, interacting particle systems and polymers in random environments) which display characteristic, though unusual, scalings and new statistics. This class …
We study a $(2+1)$-dimensional stochastic interface growth model, that is believed to belong to the so-called Anisotropic KPZ (AKPZ) universality class [Borodin and Ferrari, 2014]. It can be seen either as a two-dimensional interacting particle process with drift, that generalizes the one-dimensional Hammersley process [Aldous and Diaconis 1995, Seppalainen 1996], or as an irreversible dynamics of lozenge tilings of the plane [Borodin and Ferrari 2014, Toninelli 2015]. Our main result is a hydrodynamic limit: the interface height profile converges, after a hyperbolic scaling of space and time,…
