Fredholm determinants associated to deformations of the Airy kernel are closely connected to the solution to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation with narrow wedge initial data, and they also appear as largest particle distribution in models of positive-temperature free fermions. We show that logarithmic derivatives of the Fredholm determinants can be expressed in terms of a 2x2 Riemann-Hilbert problem, and we use this to derive asymptotics for the Fredholm determinants. As an application of our result, we derive precise lower tail asymptotics for the solution of the KPZ equation with narrow wedge initial data, refining recent results by Corwin and Ghosal.
We consider the upper and lower tail probabilities for the centered (by time$/24$) and scaled (according to KPZ time$^{1/3}$ scaling) one-point distribution of the Cole-Hopf solution of the KPZ equation when started with initial data drawn from a very general class. For the lower tail, we prove an upper bound which demonstrates a crossover from super-exponential decay with exponent $3$ in the shallow tail to an exponent $5/2$ in the deep tail. For the upper tail, we prove super-exponential decay bounds with exponent $3/2$ at all depth in the tail.
The Riemann surface for polylogarithms of half-integer index, which has the topology of an infinite dimensional hypercube, is studied in relation to one-dimensional KPZ universality in finite volume. Known exact results for fluctuations of the KPZ height with periodic boundaries are expressed in terms of meromorphic functions on this Riemann surface, summed over all the sheets of a covering map to an infinite cylinder. Connections to stationary large deviations, particle-hole excitations and KdV solitons are discussed.
We provide the first tight bounds on the lower tail probability of the one point distribution of the KPZ equation with narrow wedge initial data. Our bounds hold for all sufficiently large times $T$ and demonstrates a crossover between super-exponential decay with exponent $5/2$ (and leading pre-factor $\frac{4}{15π} T^{1/3}$) for tail depth greater than $T^{2/3}$, and exponent $3$ (with leading pre-factor $\frac{1}{12}$) for tail depth less than $T^{2/3}$.
We obtain uniform asymptotics for deformed Airy kernel determinants, which arise in models of finite temperature free fermions and which characterize the narrow wedge solution of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation. The asymptotics for the determinants yield uniform initial data for an associated family of solutions to the Korteweg-de Vries equation, and uniform lower tail asymptotics for the narrow wedge solution of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation.
We establish a large deviation principle for the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation, providing precise control over the left tail of the height distribution for narrow wedge initial condition. Our analysis exploits an exact connection between the KPZ one-point distribution and the Airy point process -- an infinite particle Coulomb-gas which arises at the spectral edge in random matrix theory. We develop the large deviation principle for the Airy point process and use it to compute, in a straight-forward and assumption-free manner, the KPZ large deviation rate function in terms of an electrosta…
We establish the first tight bound on the lower tail probability of the half-space KPZ equation with Neumann boundary parameter $A = -1/2$ and narrow-wedge initial data. When the tail depth is of order $T^{2/3}$, the lower bound demonstrates a crossover between a regime of super-exponential decay with exponent $\frac{5}{2}$ (and leading pre-factor $\frac{2}{15 π}T^{1/3}$) and a regime with exponent $3$ (and leading pre-factor $\frac{1}{24}$); the upper bound demonstrates a crossover between a regime with exponent $\frac{3}{2}$ (and arbitrarily small pre-factor) and a regime with exponent $3$ (…
We study the long-time regime of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation in $1+1$ dimensions for the Brownian and droplet initial conditions and present a simple derivation of the tail of the large deviations of the height on the negative side $λH<0$. We show that for both initial conditions, the cumulative distribution functions take a large deviations form, with a tail for $- \tilde s \gg 1$ given by $-\log \mathbb{P}\left(\frac{H}{t}<\tilde{s}\right)=t^2 \frac{4 }{15 π} (-\tilde{s})^{5/2} $. This exact expression was already observed at small time for both initial conditions suggesting that …
We consider the fluctuations in the stochastic growth of a one-dimensional interface of height $h(x,t)$ described by the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class. We study the joint probability distribution function (JPDF) of the interface heights at two times $t_1$ and $t_2>t_1$, with droplet initial conditions at $t=0$. In the limit of large times this JPDF is expected to become a universal function of the time ratio $t_2/t_1$, and of the (properly scaled) heights $h(x,t_1)$ and $h(x,t_2)$. Using the replica Bethe ansatz method for the KPZ equation, in [J. Stat. Mech. (2017) 053212] we o…

We consider the narrow wedge solution to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang stochastic PDE under the characteristic $3:2:1$ scaling of time, space and fluctuations. We study the correlation of fluctuations at two different times. We show that when the times are close to each other, the correlation approaches one at a power-law rate with exponent $2/3$, while when the two times are remote from each other, the correlation tends to zero at a power-law rate with exponent $-1/3$. We also prove exponential-type tail bounds for differences of the solution at two space-time points. Three main tools are pivotal t…
We investigate the short-time regime of the KPZ equation in $1+1$ dimensions and develop a unifying method to obtain the height distribution in this regime, valid whenever an exact solution exists in the form of a Fredholm Pfaffian or determinant. These include the droplet and stationary initial conditions in full space, previously obtained by a different method. The novel results concern the droplet initial condition in a half space for several Neumann boundary conditions: hard wall, symmetric, and critical. In all cases, the height probability distribution takes the large deviation form $P(H…
We consider the Cole-Hopf solution of the (1+1)-dimensional KPZ equation started from the narrow wedge initial condition. In this article, we ask how the peaks and valleys of the KPZ height function (centered by time/24) at any spatial point grow as time increases. Our first main result is about the law of iterated logarithms for the KPZ equation. As time variable $t$ goes to $\infty$, we show that the limsup of the KPZ height function with the scaling by $t^{1/3}(\log\log t)^{2/3}$ is almost surely equal to $(\frac{3}{4\sqrt{2}})^{2/3}$ whereas the liminf of the height function with the scali…
For each $t\geq 1$ we construct an $\mathbf{N}$-indexed ensemble of random continuous curves with three properties: 1. The lowest indexed curve is distributed as the time $t$ Hopf-Cole solution to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) stochastic PDE with narrow wedge initial data; 2. The entire ensemble satisfies a resampling invariance which we call the $\mathbf{H}$-Brownian Gibbs property (with $\mathbf{H}(x)=e^{x}$); 3. Increments of the lowest indexed curve, when centered by $-t/24$ and scaled down vertically by $t^{1/3}$ and horizontally by $t^{2/3}$, remain uniformly absolutely continuous (i.e. …
This article is firstly a historic review of the theory of Riemann-Hilbert problems with particular emphasis placed on their original appearance in the context of Hilbert's 21st problem and Plemelj's work associated with it. The secondary purpose of this note is to invite a new generation of mathematicians to the fascinating world of Riemann-Hilbert techniques and their modern appearances in nonlinear mathematical physics. We set out to achieve this goal with six examples, including a new proof of the integro-differential Painlevé-II formula of Amir, Corwin, Quastel \cite{ACQ} that enters in t…
We study the macroscopic fractal properties of the deep valleys of the solution of the $(1+1)$-dimensional parabolic Anderson equation $${\partial \over \partial t}u(t,x) =\frac{1}{2} {\partial^2 \over \partial x^2} u(t,x) + u(t,x)\dot{W}(t,x),t>0, x\in {\bf R},\quad u(0,x) \equiv u_0(x),x\in {\bf R}, $$ where $\dot{W}$ is the time-space white noise and $0<\inf_{x\in {\bf R}} u_0(x)\leq \sup_{x\in {\bf R}} u_0(x)<\infty.$ Unlike the macroscopic multifractality of the tall peaks, we show that valleys of the parabolic Anderson equation are macroscopically monofractal. In fact, the macroscopic Ha…
