The Cohen-Lenstra heuristic predicts the distribution of ideal class groups over number fields. Random matrix models provide a natural framework for explaining this heuristic, and recent results demonstrate the effectiveness of these tools. In this paper, we extend the analysis of the random matrix model to examine the error term in the Cohen-Lenstra heuristic. Additionally, we derive the asymptotic distribution of the corank of random matrices over finite fields, which can be modeled as a special class of Markov chains.
The Cohen-Lenstra heuristic is a universal principle that assigns to each group a probability that tells how often this group should occur "in nature". The most important, but not the only, applications are sequences of class groups, which behave like random sequences of groups with respect to the so-called Cohen-Lenstra probability measure. So far, it was only possible to define this probability measure for finite abelian $p$-groups. We prove that it is also possible to define an analogous probability measure on the set of \emph{all} finite abelian groups when restricting to the $Σ$-algebra o…
We investigate combinatorial properties of a family of probability distributions on finite abelian p-groups. This family includes several well-known distributions as specializations. These specializations have been studied in the context of Cohen-Lenstra heuristics and cokernels of families of random p-adic matrices.
We prove that given any $ε>0$, random integral $n\times n$ matrices with independent entries that lie in any residue class modulo a prime with probability at most $1-ε$ have cokernels asymptotically (as $n\rightarrow\infty$) distributed as in the distribution on finite abelian groups that Cohen and Lenstra conjecture as the distribution for class groups of imaginary quadratic fields. This is a refinement of a result on the distribution of ranks of random matrices with independent entries in $\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$. This is interesting especially in light of the fact that these class groups ar…
The goal of this paper is to prove theorems that elucidate the Cohen-Lenstra-Martinet conjectures for the distributions of class groups of number fields, and further the understanding of their implications. We start by giving a simpler statement of the conjectures. We show that the probabilities that arise are inversely proportional the to number of automorphisms of structures slightly larger than the class groups. We find the moments of the Cohen-Lenstra-Martinet distributions and prove that the distributions are determined by their moments. In order to apply these conjectures to class groups…
In number theory, great efforts have been undertaken to study the Cohen-Lenstra probability measure on the set of all finite abelian $p$-groups. On the other hand, group theorists have studied a probability measure on the set of all partitions induced by the probability that a randomly chosen $n\times n$-matrix over $\FF_p$ is contained in a conjucagy class associated with this partitions, for $n \to \infty$. This paper shows that both probability measures are identical. As a consequence, a multitide of results can be transferred from each theory to the other one. The paper contains a survey a…
Let $(R, \mathfrak{m})$ be a complete discrete valuation ring with the finite residue field $R/\mathfrak{m} = \mathbb{F}_{q}$. Given a monic polynomial $P(t) \in R[t]$ whose reduction modulo $\mathfrak{m}$ gives an irreducible polynomial $\bar{P}(t) \in \mathbb{F}_{q}[t]$, we initiate the investigation of the distribution of $\mathrm{coker}(P(A))$, where $A \in \mathrm{Mat}_{n}(R)$ is randomly chosen with respect to the Haar probability measure on the additive group $\mathrm{Mat}_{n}(R)$ of $n \times n$ $R$-matrices. One of our main results generalizes two results of Friedman and Washington. O…
We study torsion in homology of the random $d$-complex $Y \sim Y_d(n,p)$ experimentally. Our experiments suggest that there is almost always a moment in the process where there is an enormous burst of torsion in homology $H_{d-1}(Y)$. This moment seems to coincide with the phase transition studied in \cite{AL,LP,LP3} , where cycles in $H_d(Y)$ first appear with high probability. Our main study is the limiting distribution on the $q$-part of the torsion subgroup of $H_{d-1}(Y)$ for small primes $q$. We find strong evidence for a limiting Cohen--Lenstra distribution, where the probability that t…
We identify the asymptotic distribution of $p$-rank of the sandpile group of a random directed bipartite graphs which are not too imbalanced. We show this matches exactly that of the Erd{ö}s-R{é}nyi random directed graph model, suggesting the Sylow $p$-subgroups of this model may also be Cohen-Lenstra distributed. Our work builds on results of Koplewitz who studied $p$-rank distributions for unbalanced random bipartite graphs, and showed that for sufficiently unbalanced graphs, the distribution of $p$-rank differs from the Cohen-Lenstra distribution. Koplewitz \cite{K} conjectured that for ran…
For a random matrix of entries sampled independently from a fairly general distribution in Z we study the probability that the cokernel is isomorphic to a given finite abelian group, or when it is cyclic. This includes the probability that the linear map between the integer lattices given by the matrix is surjective. We show that these statistics are asymptotically universal (as the size of the matrix goes to infinity), given by precise formulas involving zeta values, and agree with distributions defined by Cohen and Lenstra, even when the distribution of matrix entries is very distorted. Our …
We consider the probability theory, and in particular the moment problem and universality theorems, for random groups of the sort of that arise or are conjectured to arise in number theory, and in related situations in topology and combinatorics. The distributions of random groups that are discussed include those conjectured in the Cohen-Lenstra-Martinet heuristics to be the distributions of class groups of random number fields, as well as distributions of non-abelian generalizations, and those conjectured to be the distributions of Selmer groups of random elliptic curves. For these sorts of d…
Let $p$ be prime and $X$ be a Haar-random $n \times n$ matrix over $\mathbb{Z}_{p}$, the ring of $p$-adic integers. Let $P_{1}(t), \dots, P_{l}(t) \in \mathbb{Z}_{p}[t]$ be monic polynomials of degree at most $2$ whose images modulo $p$ are distinct and irreducible in $\mathbb{F}_{p}[t]$. For each $j$, let $G_{j}$ be a finite module over $\mathbb{Z}_{p}[t]/(P_{j}(t))$. We show that as $n$ goes to infinity, the probabilities that $\mathrm{cok}(P_{j}(X)) \simeq G_{j}$ are independent, and each probability can be described in terms of a Cohen-Lenstra distribution. We also show that for any fixed …
We determine the distribution of the sandpile group (a.k.a. Jacobian) of the Erdős-Rényi random graph G(n,q) as n goes to infinity. Since any particular group appears with asymptotic probability 0 (as we show), it is natural ask for the asymptotic distribution of Sylow p-subgroups of sandpile groups. We prove the distributions of Sylow p-subgroups converge to specific distributions conjectured by Clancy, Leake, and Payne. These distributions are related to, but different from, the Cohen-Lenstra distribution. Our proof involves first finding the expected number of surjections from the sandpile …
We study the distribution of the sandpile group of random d-regular graphs. For the directed model, we prove that it follows the Cohen-Lenstra heuristics, that is, the limiting probability that the $p$-Sylow subgroup of the sandpile group is a given $p$-group $P$, is proportional to $|Aut(P)|^{-1}$. For finitely many primes, these events get independent in the limit. Similar results hold for undirected random regular graphs, where for odd primes the limiting distributions are the ones given by Clancy, Leake and Payne. This answers an open question of Frieze and Vu whether the adjacency matrix …
