We adapt linear programming methods from sphere packings to closed hyperbolic surfaces and obtain new upper bounds on their systole, their kissing number, the first positive eigenvalue of their Laplacian, the multiplicity of their first eigenvalue, and their number of small eigenvalues. Apart from a few exceptions, the resulting bounds are the current best known both in low genus and as the genus tends to infinity. Our methods also provide lower bounds on the systole (achieved in genus $2$ to $7$, $14$, and $17$) that are sufficient for surfaces to have a spectral gap larger than $1/4$.
We show that any infinite-type surface without planar ends admits arbitrarily large families of length isospectral hyperbolic structures. If the surface has infinite genus and its space of ends is self-similar, we construct an uncountable family of isospectral and quasiconformally distinct hyperbolic structures.
Motivated by classical theorems on minimal surface theory in compact hyperbolic three-manifolds, we investigate the questions of existence and deformations for least area minimal surfaces in complete noncompact hyperbolic three-manifold of finite volume. We prove any closed immersed incompressible surface can be deformed to a closed immersed least area surface within its homotopy class in any cusped hyperbolic three-manifold. Our techniques highlight how special structures of these cusped hyperbolic three-manifolds prevent any least area minimal surface going too deep into the cusped region.
We present a construction of sequences of closed hyperbolic surfaces that have long systoles which form pants decompositions of these surfaces. The length of the systoles of these surfaces grows logarithmically as a function of their genus.
This paper studies the combinatorial Yamabe flow on hyperbolic bordered surfaces. We show that the flow exists for all time and converges exponentially fast to conformal factor which produces a hyperbolic surface whose lengths of boundary components are equal to prescribed positive numbers. This provides an algorithm to such problems.
This article explores closed geodesics on hyperbolic surfaces. We show that, for sufficiently large $k$, the shortest closed geodesics with at least $k$ self-intersections, taken among all hyperbolic surfaces, all lie on an ideal pair of pants and have length $2\arccosh(2k+1)$.
In this paper, we show the existence of smoothly embedded closed minimal surfaces in infinite volume hyperbolic $3$-manifolds except some special cases.
We study the number and the length of systoles on complete finite area orientable hyperbolic surfaces. In particular, we prove upper bounds on the number of systoles that a surface can have (the so-called kissing number for hyperbolic surfaces). Our main result is a bound which only depends on the topology of the surface and which grows subquadratically in the genus.
We obtain the exact values of the systoles of these hyperbolic surfaces of genus $g$ with cyclic symmetries of the maximum order and the next maximum order. Precisely: for genus $g$ hyperbolic surface with order $4g+2$ cyclic symmetry, the systole is $2\mathrm{arccosh} (1+\cos \fracπ{2g+1}+\cos \frac{2π}{2g+1})$ when $g\ge 7$, and for genus $g$ hyperbolic surface with order $4g$ cyclic symmetry, the systole is $2\mathrm{arccosh} (1+2\cos \fracπ{2g})$ when $g\ge4$.
Suppose that $M$ is a hyperbolic surface of genus $g$ and with $n$ cusps. Then we can find a pants decomposition of $M$ composed of simple closed geodesics so that each curve is contained in a ball of diameter at most $C\sqrt{g + n}$, where $C$ is a universal constant.
The goal of the article is to provide different explicit quantifications of the non density of simple closed geodesics on hyperbolic surfaces. In particular, we show that within any embedded metric disk on a surface, lies a disk of radius only depending on the topology of the surface (and the size of the first embedded disk), which is disjoint from any simple closed geodesic.
In this article we explore the relationship between the systole and the diameter of closed hyperbolic orientable surfaces. We show that they satisfy a certain inequality, which can be used to deduce that their ratio has a (genus dependent) upper bound.
We consider harmonic diffeomorphisms to a fixed hyperbolic target $Y$, from a family of domain Riemann surfaces degenerating along a Teichmüller ray. We use the work of Minsky to show that there is a limiting harmonic map from the conformal limit of the Teichmüller ray, to a crowned hyperbolic surface. The target surface is the metric completion of the complement of a geodesic lamination on $Y$. The conformal limit is obtained by attaching half-planes and cylinders to the critical graph of the holomorphic quadratic differential determining the ray. As an application, we provide a new proof of …
This article deals with the set of closed geodesics on complete finite type hyperbolic surfaces. For any non-negative integer $k$, we consider the set of closed geodesics that self-intersect at least $k$ times, and investigate those of minimal length. The main result is that, if the surface has at least one cusp, their self-intersection numbers are exactly $k$ for large enough $k$.
We prove the existence of a minimal diffeomorphism isotopic to the identity between two hyperbolic cone surfaces $(Σ,g_1)$ and $(Σ,g_2)$ when the cone angles of $g_1$ and $g_2$ are different and smaller than $π$. When the cone angles of $g_1$ are strictly smaller than the ones of $g_2$, this minimal diffeomorphism is unique.
We derive a sharp cusp count for finite volume complex hyperbolic surfaces which admit smooth toroidal compactifications. We use this result, and the techniques developed in [DiC12], to study the geometry of cusped complex hyperbolic surfaces and their compactifications.
In this article, we prove that the commensurability class of a closed, orientable, hyperbolic 3-manifold is determined by the surface subgroups of its fundamental group. Moreover, we prove that there can be only finitely many closed, orientable, hyperbolic 3-manifolds that have the same set of surfaces.
Hensel-Przytycki-Webb proved that all curve graphs of orientable surfaces are 17-hyperbolic. In this paper, we show that curve graphs of non-orientable surfaces are 17-hyperbolic by applying Hensel-Przytycki-Webb's argument. We also show that arc graphs of non-orientable surfaces are 7-hyperbolic, and arc-curve graphs of (non-)orientable surfaces are 9-hyperbolic.
The function on the Teichmueller space of complete, orientable, finite-area hyperbolic surfaces of a fixed topological type that assigns to a hyperbolic surface its maximal injectivity radius has no local maxima that are not global maxima.
It is a longstanding problem to determine the precise relationship between the geodesic length spectrum of a hyperbolic manifold and its commensurability class. A well known result of Reid, for instance, shows that the geodesic length spectrum of an arithmetic hyperbolic surface determines the surface's commensurability class. It is known, however, that non-commensurable arithmetic hyperbolic surfaces may share arbitrarily large portions of their length spectra. In this paper we investigate this phenomenon and prove a number of quantitative results about the maximum cardinality of a family of …
In the present paper, we show that the minimal length of closed geodesics on finite-type hyperbolic surfaces with self-intersection number $k$ has order $2\log k$ as $k$ gets large.
We study closed geodesics on hyperbolic surfaces, and give bounds for their angles of intersection and self-intersection, and for the sides of the polygons that they form, depending only on the lengths of the geodesics
We show that word-hyperbolic groups satisfy linear isoperimetric functions for all homotopy types of surface diagrams. This generalises the linear isoperimetric functions for disc and annular diagrams.
For any given natural number $k$, this paper gives upper bounds on the radius of a packing of a complete hyperbolic surface of finite area by $k$ equal-radius disks in terms of the surface's topology. We show that the bounds given here are sharp in some cases and not sharp in others.
We describe several methods to construct minimal foliations by hyperbolic surfaces on closed 3-manifolds, and discuss the properties of the examples thus obtained.
We show the existence of an infinite collection of hyperbolic knots where each of which has in its exterior meridional essential planar surfaces of arbitrarily large number of boundary components, or, equivalently, that each of these knots has essential tangle decompositions of arbitrarily large number of strings. Moreover, each of these knots has in its exterior meridional essential surfaces of any positive genus and (even) number of boundary components. That is, the compact surfaces that have a meridional essential embedding into a hyperbolic knot exterior have meridional essential embedding…
Motivated by recent work on Delaunay triangulations of hyperbolic surfaces, we consider the minimal number of vertices of such triangulations. First, we will show that every hyperbolic surface of genus $g$ has a simplicial Delaunay triangulation with $O(g)$ vertices, where edges are given by distance paths. Then, we will construct a class of hyperbolic surfaces for which the order of this bound is optimal. Finally, to give a general lower bound, we will show that the $Ω(\sqrt{g})$ lower bound for the number of vertices of a simplicial triangulation of a topological surface of genus $g$ is tigh…
In this paper we examine the relationship between the length spectrum and the geometric genus spectrum of an arithmetic hyperbolic 3-orbifold M. In particular we analyze the extent to which the geometry of M is determined by the closed geodesics coming from finite area totally geodesic surfaces. Using a variety of techniques from analytic number theory, we address the following problems: Is the commensurability class of an arithmetic hyperbolic 3-orbifold determined by the lengths of closed geodesics lying on totally geodesic surfaces?, Do there exist arithmetic hyperbolic 3-orbifolds whose "s…
We discuss several ways of packing a hyperbolic surface with circles (of either varying radii or all being congruent) or horocycles, and note down some observations related to their symmetries (or the absence thereof).
We study the geometry of hyperbolic cone surfaces, possibly with cusps or geodesic boundaries. We prove that any hyperbolic cone structure on a surface of non-exceptional type is determined up to isotopy by the geodesic lengths of a finite specific homotopy classes of non-peripheral simple closed curves. As an application, we show that the Thurston asymmetric metric is well-defined on the Teichmüller space of hyperbolic cone surfaces with fixed cone angles and boundary lengths. We compare such a Teichmüller space with the Teichmüller space of complete hyperbolic surfaces with punctures, by sho…
We consider geometric triangulations of surfaces, i.e., triangulations whose edges can be realized by disjoint locally geodesic segments. We prove that the flip graph of geometric triangulations with fixed vertices of a flat torus or a closed hyperbolic surface is connected. We give upper bounds on the number of edge flips that are necessary to transform any geometric triangulation on such a surface into a Delaunay triangulation.
