It is a longstanding problem to determine the precise relationship between the geodesic length spectrum of a hyperbolic manifold and its commensurability class. A well known result of Reid, for instance, shows that the geodesic length spectrum of an arithmetic hyperbolic surface determines the surface's commensurability class. It is known, however, that non-commensurable arithmetic hyperbolic surfaces may share arbitrarily large portions of their length spectra. In this paper we investigate this phenomenon and prove a number of quantitative results about the maximum cardinality of a family of pairwise non-commensurable arithmetic hyperbolic surfaces whose length spectra all contain a fixed (finite) set of nonnegative real numbers.
In this paper we examine the relationship between the length spectrum and the geometric genus spectrum of an arithmetic hyperbolic 3-orbifold M. In particular we analyze the extent to which the geometry of M is determined by the closed geodesics coming from finite area totally geodesic surfaces. Using a variety of techniques from analytic number theory, we address the following problems: Is the commensurability class of an arithmetic hyperbolic 3-orbifold determined by the lengths of closed geodesics lying on totally geodesic surfaces?, Do there exist arithmetic hyperbolic 3-orbifolds whose "s…
Gromov and Piatetski-Shapiro proved existence of finite volume non-arithmetic hyperbolic manifolds of any given dimension. In dimension four and higher, we show that there are about v^v such manifolds of volume at most v, considered up to commensurability. Since the number of arithmetic ones tends to be polynomial, almost all hyperbolic manifolds are non-arithmetic in an appropriate sense. Our method involves a geometric graph-of-spaces construction that relies on arithmetic properties of certain quadratic forms.
In this article, we investigate when the set of primitive geodesic lengths on a Riemannian manifold have arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions. We prove that in the space of negatively curved metrics, a metric having such arithmetic progressions is quite rare. We introduce almost arithmetic progressions, a coarsification of arithmetic progressions, and prove that every negatively curved, closed Riemannian manifold has arbitrarily long almost arithmetic progressions in its primitive length spectrum. Concerning genuine arithmetic progressions, we prove that every non-compact, locally symmetri…
We prove a quantitative estimate, with a power saving error term, for the number of simple closed geodesics of length at most $L$ on a compact surface equipped with a Riemannian metric of negative curvature. The proof relies on the exponential mixing rate for the Teichmüller geodesic flow.
This paper shows that many hyperbolic manifolds obtained by glueing arithmetic pieces embed into higher-dimensional hyperbolic manifolds as codimension-one totally geodesic submanifolds. As a consequence, many Gromov--Pyatetski-Shapiro and Agol--Belolipetsky--Thomson non-arithmetic manifolds embed geodesically. Moreover, we show that the number of commensurability classes of hyperbolic manifolds with a representative of volume $\leq v$ that bounds geometrically is at least $v^{Cv}$, for $v$ large enough.
We compute the asymptotics, as R tends to infinity, of the number of closed geodesics in Moduli space of length at most R, or equivalently the number of pseudo-Anosov elements of the mapping class group of translation length at most R.
Let $X$ be a compact, geodesically complete, locally CAT(0) space such that the universal cover admits a rank one axis. Assume $X$ is not homothetic to a metric graph with integer edge lengths. Let $P_t$ be the number of parallel classes of oriented closed geodesics of length $\le t$; then $\lim\limits_{t \to \infty} P_t / \frac{e^{ht}}{ht} = 1$, where $h$ is the entropy of the geodesic flow on the space $SX$ of parametrized unit-speed geodesics in $X$.
In this article, we investigate the problem of counting totally geodesic surfaces in the complement of hyperbolic knots with at most 9 crossings. Adapting previous counting techniques of boundary slope and intersection, we establish uniqueness of a totally geodesic surface for the knots $7_4$ and $9_{35}$. Extending an obstruction to the existence of totally geodesic surfaces due to Calegari, we show that there is no totally geodesic surface in the complement of 47 knots.
We study the growth of the number of conjugacy classes of infinite dihedral subgroups of lattices in PSL(2,R), generalizing earlier work of Sarnak and Bourgain-Kontorovich on the growth of the number of reciprocal geodesics on the modular surface. We also prove that reciprocal geodesics are equidistributed in the unit tangent bundle.
Given a connected, oriented, complete, finite area hyperbolic surface $X$ of genus $g$ with $n$ punctures, Mirzakhani showed that the number of multi-geodesics on $X$ of total hyperbolic length $\leq L$ in the mapping class group orbit of a given simple or filling closed multi-curve is asymptotic as $L \to \infty$ to a polynomial in $L$ of degree $6g-6+2n$. We establish asymptotics of the same kind for countings of multi-geodesics in mapping class group orbits of simple or filling closed multi-curves that keep track of the hyperbolic lengths of individual components, proving and generalizing a…
In this paper we show that totally geodesic subspaces determine the commensurability class of a standard arithmetic hyperbolic $n$-orbifold, $n\ge 4$. Many of the results are more general and apply to locally symmetric spaces associated to arithmetic lattices in $\mathbb{R}$-simple Lie groups of type $B_n$ and $D_n$. We use a combination of techniques from algebraic groups and quadratic forms to prove several results about these spaces.
We obtain bounds on the numbers of intersections between triangulations as the conformal structure of a surface varies along a Teichm{ü}ller geodesic contained in an $\mathrm{SL}\left(2,\mathbb{R}\right)$-orbit closure of rank 1 in the moduli space of Abelian differentials. For $0 \leq θ\leq 1$, we obtain an exponential bound on the number of closed geodesics in the orbit closure, of length at most $R$, that spend at least $θ$-fraction of their length in a region with short saddle connections.
We investigate the geometry of word metrics on fundamental groups of manifolds associated with the generating sets consisting of elements represented by closed geodesics. We ask whether the diameter of such a metric is finite or infinite. The first answer we interpret as an abundance of closed geodesics, while the second one as their scarcity. We discuss examples for both cases.
For every positive, continuous and homogeneous function $f$ on the space of currents on a compact surface $\overlineΣ$, and for every compactly supported filling current $α$, we compute as $L \to \infty$, the number of mapping classes $ϕ$ so that $f(ϕ(α))\leq L$. As an application, when the surface in question is closed, we prove a lattice counting theorem for Teichmüller space equipped with the Thurston metric.
We define a norm on homology of punctured tori equipped with a complete hyperbolic metric of finite volume and use it to find asymptotics on the growth of the number of simple geodesics of bounded length.
We compute the asymptotic growth rate of the number N(C, R) of closed geodesics of length less than R in a connected component C of a stratum of quadratic differentials. We prove that for any 0 < θ< 1, the number of closed geodesics of length at most R that spend at least θ-fraction of time outside of a compact subset of C is exponentially smaller than N(C, R). The theorem follows from a lattice counting statement. For points x, y in the moduli space M of Riemann surfaces, and for 0 < θ< 1, we find an upper-bound for the number of geodesic paths of length less than R in C which connect a point…
In this article, we study geometric aspects of semi-arithmetic Riemann surfaces by means of number theory and hyperbolic geometry. First, we show the existence of infinitely many semi-arithmetic Riemann surfaces of various shapes and prove that their systoles are dense in the positive real numbers. Furthermore, this leads to a construction, for each genus $g \geq 2,$ of infinite families of semi-arithmetic surfaces with pairwise distinct invariant trace fields, giving a negative answer to a conjecture of B. Jeon. Finally, for any semi-arithmetic surface we find a sequence of congruence coverin…
We prove that there is a true asymptotic formula for the number of one sided simple closed curves of length $\leq L$ on any Fuchsian real projective plane with three points removed. The exponent of growth is independent of the hyperbolic structure, and it is noninteger, in contrast to counting results of Mirzakhani for simple closed curves on orientable Fuchsian surfaces.
We show that the number of square-tiled surfaces of genus $g$, with $n$ marked points, with one or both of its horizontal and vertical foliations belonging to fixed mapping class group orbits, and having at most $L$ squares, is asymptotic to $L^{6g-6+2n}$ times a product of constants appearing in Mirzakhani's count of simple closed hyperbolic geodesics. Many of the results in this paper reflect recent discoveries of Delecroix, Goujard, Zograf, and Zorich, but the approach considered here is very different from theirs. We follow conceptual and geometric methods inspired by Mirzakhani's work.
Let $Γ$ be a lattice in $\mathrm{SO}_0(n, 1)$. We prove that if the associated locally symmetric space contains infinitely many maximal totally geodesic subspaces of dimension at least $2$, then $Γ$ is arithmetic. This answers a question of Reid for hyperbolic $n$-manifolds and, independently, McMullen for hyperbolic $3$-manifolds. We prove these results by proving a superrigidity theorem for certain representations of such lattices. The proof of our superrigidity theorem uses results on equidistribution from homogeneous dynamics and our main result also admits a formulation in that language.
We give an effective upper bound, for certain arithmetic hyperbolic 3-manifold groups obtained from a quadratic form construction, on the minimal index of a subgroup that embeds in a fixed 6-dimensional right-angled reflection group, stabilizing a totally geodesic subspace. In particular, for manifold groups in any fixed commensurability class we show that the index of such a subgroup is asymptotically smaller than any fractional power of the volume of the manifold. We also give effective bounds on the geodesic residual finiteness growths of closed hyperbolic manifolds that totally geodesicall…
For $n \ge 2$, we prove that a finite volume complex hyperbolic $n$-manifold containing infinitely many maximal properly immersed totally geodesic submanifolds of dimension at least two is arithmetic, paralleling our previous work for real hyperbolic manifolds. As in the real hyperbolic case, our primary result is a superrigidity theorem for certain representations of complex hyperbolic lattices. The proof requires developing new general tools not needed in the real hyperbolic case. Our main results also have a number of other applications. For example, we prove nonexistence of certain maps be…
The work of Reid, Chinburg--Hamilton--Long--Reid, Prasad--Rapinchuk, and the author with Reid have demonstrated that geodesics or totally geodesic submanifolds can sometimes be used to determine the commensurability class of an arithmetic manifold. The main results of this article show that generalizations of these results to other arithmetic manifolds will require a wide range of data. Specifically, we prove that certain incommensurable arithmetic manifolds arising from the semisimple Lie groups of the form $(\SL(d,\R))^r \times (\SL(d,\C))^s$ have the same commensurability classes of totally…
We give estimates on the number $AL_H(x)$ of arithmetic lattices $Γ$ of covolume at most $x$ in a simple Lie group $H$. In particular, we obtain a first concrete estimate on the number of arithmetic 3-manifolds of volume at most $x$. Our main result is for the classical case $H=PSL(2,R)$ where we compute the limit of $\log AL_H(x) / x\log x$ when $x\to\infty$. The proofs use several different techniques: geometric (bounding the number of generators of $Γ$ as a function of its covolume), number theoretic (bounding the number of maximal such $Γ$) and sharp estimates on the character values of th…
The classical prime geodesic theorem (PGT) gives an asymptotic formula (as $x$ tends to infinity) for the number of closed geodesics with length at most $x$ on a hyperbolic manifold $M$. Closed geodesics correspond to conjugacy classes of $π_1(M)=Γ$ where $Γ$ is a lattice in $G=SO(n,1)$. The theorem can be rephrased in the following format. Let $X(\Z,Γ)$ be the space of representations of $\Z$ into $Γ$ modulo conjugation by $Γ$. $X(\Z,G)$ is defined similarly. Let $π: X(\Z,Γ)\to X(\Z,G)$ be the projection map. The PGT provides a volume form $vol$ on $X(\Z,G)$ such that for sequences of subsets…
Let $G/Γ$ be the quotient of a semisimple Lie group by an arithmetic lattice. We show that for reductive subgroups $H$ of $G$ that is large enough, the orbits of $H$ on $G/Γ$ intersect nontrivially with a fixed compact set. As a consequence, we deduce finiteness result for totally geodesic submanifolds of arithmetic quotients of symmetric spaces that do not admit nontrivial deformation and with bounded volume. Our work generalizes previous work of Tomanov--Weiss and Oh on this topic.
In 1992, Reid asked whether hyperbolic 3-manifolds with the same geodesic length spectra are necessarily commensurable. While this is known to be true for arithmetic hyperbolic 3-manifolds, the non-arithmetic case is still open. Building towards a negative answer to this question, Futer and Millichap recently constructed infinitely many pairs of non-commensurable, non-arithmetic hyperbolic 3-manifolds which have the same volume and whose length spectra begin with the same first $m$ geodesic lengths. In the present paper, we show that this phenomenon is surprisingly common in the arithmetic set…
Let $M$ be a geometrically finite acylindrical hyperbolic 3-manifold and let $M^*$ denote the interior of the convex core of M. We show that any geodesic plane in $M^*$ is either closed or dense, and that there are only countably many closed geodesic planes in $M^*$. These results were obtained earlier by McMullen, Mohammadi, and the second named author when M is convex cocompact. As a corollary we obtain that when $M$ covers an arithmetic hyperbolic 3-manifold $M_0$, the topological behavior of a geodesic plane in $M^*$ is governed by that of the corresponding plane in $M_0$. We construct a c…
We consider the existence of simple closed geodesics or "geodesic knots" in finite volume orientable hyperbolic 3-manifolds. Previous results show that at least one geodesic knot always exists [Bull. London Math. Soc. 31(1) (1999) 81-86], and that certain arithmetic manifolds contain infinitely many geodesic knots [J. Diff. Geom. 38 (1993) 545-558], [Experimental Mathematics 10(3) (2001) 419-436]. In this paper we show that all cusped orientable finite volume hyperbolic 3-manifolds contain infinitely many geodesic knots. Our proof is constructive, and the infinite family of geodesic knots prod…
It is known that the lengths of closed geodesics of an arithmetic hyperbolic orbifold are related to Salem numbers. We initiate a quantitative study of this phenomenon. We show that any non-compact arithmetic $3$-dimensional orbifold defines $c Q^{1/2} + O(Q^{1/4})$ square-rootable Salem numbers of degree $4$ which are less than or equal to $Q$. This quantity can be compared to the total number of such Salem numbers, which is shown to be asymptotic to $\frac{4}{3}Q^{3/2}+O(Q)$. Assuming the gap conjecture of Marklof, we can extend these results to compact arithmetic $3$-orbifolds. As an applic…
We show that the number of isometry classes of cusped hyperbolic $3$-manifolds that bound geometrically grows at least super-exponentially with their volume, both in the arithmetic and non-arithmetic settings.

The geodesic length spectrum of a complete, finite volume, hyperbolic 3-orbifold M is a fundamental invariant of the topology of M via Mostow-Prasad Rigidity. Motivated by this, the second author and Reid defined a two-dimensional analogue of the geodesic length spectrum given by the multiset of isometry types of totally geodesic, immersed, finite-area surfaces of M called the geometric genus spectrum. They showed that if $M$ is arithmetic and contains a totally geodesic surface, then the geometric genus spectrum of M determines its commensurability class. In this paper we define a coarser inv…
In this paper we prove that there is a direct relationship between Salem numbers and translation lengths of hyperbolic elements of arithmetic hyperbolic groups that are determined by a quadratic form over a totally real number field. As an application we determine a sharp lower bound for the length of a closed geodesic in a noncompact arithmetic hyperbolic n-orbifold for each dimension n. We also discuss a "short geodesic conjecture", and prove its equivalence with "Lehmer's conjecture" for Salem numbers.
We prove that any arithmetic hyperbolic $n$-manifold of simplest type can either be geodesically embedded into an arithmetic hyperbolic $(n+1)$-manifold or its universal $\mathrm{mod}~2$ Abelian cover can.
For positive integers $p$ and $q$ let $G:=\textrm{PSO}(p,q)$ be the projective indefinite special-orthogonal group of signature $(p,q)$. We study counting problems in the Riemannian symmetric space $X_G$ of $G$ and in the pseudo-Riemannian hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^{p,q-1}$. Let $S\subset X_G$ be a totally geodesic copy of $X_{\textrm{PSO}(p,q-1)}$. We look at the orbit of $S$ under the action of a projective Anosov subgroup of $G$. For certain choices of such a geodesic copy we show that the number of points in this orbit which are at distance at most $t$ from $S$ is finite and asymptotic …
In this paper we examine the geometry of minimal surfaces of arithmetic hyperbolic 3-manifolds. In particular, we give bounds on the totally geodesic 2-systole, construct infinitely many incommensurable manifolds with the same initial geometric genus spectrum in which volume and 1-systole are controlled, and analyze the growth of the genera of minimal surfaces across commensurability classes. These results have applications to the study of how Heegard genus grows across commensurability classes.
We prove a quantitative estimate with a power saving error term for the number of filling closed geodesics of a given topological type and length $\leq L$ on an arbitrary closed, orientable, negatively curved surface. More generally, we prove estimates of the same kind for the number of free homotopy classes of filling closed curves of a given topological type on a closed, orientable surface whose geometric intersection number with respect to a given filling geodesic current is $\leq L$. The proofs rely on recent progress made on the study of the effective dynamics of the mapping class group o…
This paper gives a complete parametrization of the commensurability classes of totally geodesic subspaces of irreducible arithmetic quotients of $X_{a, b} = (\mathbf{H}^2)^a \times (\mathbf{H}^3)^b$. A special case describes all Shimura subvarieties of type $\mathrm{A}_1$ Shimura varieties. We produce, for any $n\geq 1$, examples of manifolds/Shimura varieties with precisely $n$ commensurability classes of totally geodesic submanifolds/Shimura subvarieties. This is in stark contrast with the previously studied cases of arithmetic hyperbolic $3$-manifolds and quaternionic Shimura surfaces, wher…
We prove that cocompact arithmetic lattices in a simple Lie group are uniformly discrete if and only if the Salem numbers are uniformly bounded away from $1$. We also prove an analogous result for semisimple Lie groups. Finally, we shed some light on the structure of the bottom of the length spectrum of an arithmetic orbifold $Γ\backslash X$ by showing the existence of a positive constant $δ(X)>0$ such that squares of lengths of closed geodesics shorter than $δ$ must be pairwise linearly dependent over $\mathbb Q$.
