The aim of this short paper is threefold. First, we develop an implicit generalization of a constitutive relation introduced by Korteweg [10] that can describe the phenomenon of capillarity. Second, using a sub-class of the constitutive relations (implicit Euler equations), we show that even in that simple situation more than one of the members of the sub-class may be able to describe one or a set of experiments one is interested in describing, and we must determine which amongst these constitutive relations is the best by culling the class by systematically comparing against an increasing set of observations. (The implicit generalization developed in this paper is not a sub-class of the implicit generalization of the Navier-Stokes fluid developed by Rajagopal [20, 21] or the generalization due to Prusa and Rajagopal [19], as spatial gradients of the density appear in the constitutive relation developed by Korteweg [10].) Third, we introduce a challenging set of partial differential equations that would lead to new techniques in both analysis and numerical analysis to study such equations.
We show that solitary waves for the 2D Euler-Korteweg model for capillary fluids display nonlinear instability when subjected to transverse perturbations.
In this article we study the principle of energy conservation for the Euler-Korteweg system. We formulate an Onsager-type sufficient regularity condition for weak solutions of the Euler-Korteweg system to conserve the total energy. The result applies to the system of Quantum Hydrodynamics.
We establish a relative energy framework for the Euler-Korteweg system with non-convex energy. This allows us to prove weak-strong uniqueness and to show convergence to a Cahn-Hilliard system in the large friction limit. We also use relative energy to show that solutions of Euler-Korteweg with convex energy converge to solutions of the Euler system in the vanishing capillarity limit, as long as the latter admits sufficiently regular strong solutions.
We consider the Euler-Korteweg system with space periodic boundary conditions $ x \in \mathbb T^d $. We prove a local in time existence result of classical solutions for irrotational velocity fields requiring natural minimal regularity assumptions on the initial data.
We construct global dissipative solutions on the torus of dimension at most three of the defocusing isothermal Euler-Langevin-Korteweg system, which corresponds to the Euler-Korteweg system of compressible quantum fluids with an isothermal pressure law and a linear drag term with respect to the velocity. In particular, the isothermal feature prevents the energy and the BD-entropy from being positive. Adapting standard approximation arguments we first show the existence of global weak solutions to the defocusing isothermal Navier-Stokes-Langevin-Korteweg system. Introducing a relative entropy f…
The aim of this paper is to investigate the singular relaxation limits for the Euler-Korteweg and the Navier-Stokes-Korteweg system in the high friction regime. We shall prove that the viscosity term is present only in higher orders in the proposed scaling and therefore it does not affect the limiting dynamics, and the two models share the same equilibrium equation. The analysis of the limit is carried out using the relative entropy techniques in the framework of weak, finite energy solutions of the relaxation models converging toward smooth solutions of the equilibrium. The results proved her…
In this paper, the main objective is to generalize to the Navier-Stokes-Korteweg (with density dependent viscosities satisfying the BD relation) and Euler-Korteweg systems a recent relative entropy [proposed by D. Bresch, P. Noble and J.--P. Vila, (2016)] introduced for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations with a linear density dependent shear viscosity and a zero bulk viscosity. As a concrete application, this helps to justify mathematically the convergence between global weak solutions of the quantum Navier-Stokes system [recently obtained simultaneously by I. Lacroix-Violet and A. Vasse…
We prove the convergence in the transonic limit of two-dimensional traveling waves of the E-K system, up to rescaling, toward a ground state of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili Equation. Similarly, in dimension one we prove the convergence in the transonic limit of solitons toward the soliton of the Korteweg de Vries equation.
The aim of this manuscript is to study the influence of the vorticity on the existence time in fluid systems for which global smoothness and decay is known in the case of small irrotational data. We focus on two examples: the Euler-Korteweg system and the two-fluid Euler Maxwell system. We prove that the lower bound of the lifespan of these systems is no less than the inverse of the $H^s$ $(s>5/2)$ norm of the rotational part of the initial velocity. Our approach is based on energy estimates and the fast time decay results of global solutions to these systems with small irrotational initial da…
Under a natural stability condition on the pressure, it is known that for small irrotational initial data, the solutions of the Euler-Korteweg system are global in time. When the initial velocity has a small rotational part, we obtain a lower bound on the time of existence that depends only on the rotational part. In the zero vorticity limit we recover the previous global well-posedness result. Independently of this analysis, we also provide (in a special case) a simple example of solution that blows up in finite time.
We investigate the existence and properties of traveling waves for the Euler-Korteweg system with general capillarity and pressure. Our main result is the existence in dimension two of waves with arbitrarily small energy. They are obtained as minimizers of a modified energy with fixed momentum. The proof follows various ideas developed for the Gross-Pitaevskii equation (and more generally nonlinear Schrödinger equations with non zero limit at infinity). Even in the Schrödinger case, the fact that we work with the hydrodynamical variables and a general pressure law both brings new difficulties …
In this paper we analyze the high friction regime for the Navier Stokes Korteweg equations for multicomponent systems. According to the shape of the mixing and friction terms, we shall perform two limits: the high friction limit toward an equilibrium system for the limit densities and the barycentric velocity, and, after an appropriate time scaling, the diffusive relaxation toward parabolic, gradient flow equations for the limit densities. The rigorous justification of these limits is done by means of relative entropy techniques in the framework of weak, finite energy solutions of the relaxati…
The Euler-Korteweg equations are a modification of the Euler equations that takes into account capillary effects. In the general case they form a quasi-linear system that can be recast as a degenerate Schrödinger type equation. Local well-posedness (in subcritical Sobolev spaces) was obtained by Benzoni-Danchin-Descombes in any space dimension, however, except in some special case (semi-linear with particular pressure) no global well-posedness is known. We prove here that under a natural stability condition on the pressure, global well-posedness holds in dimension $d\geq 3$ for small irrotatio…
We consider a general Euler-Korteweg-Poisson system in $R^3$, supplemented with the space periodic boundary conditions, where the quantum hydrodynamics equations and the classical fluid dynamics equations with capillarity are recovered as particular examples. We show that the system admits infinitely many global-in-time weak solutions for any sufficiently smooth initial data including the case of a vanishing initial density - the vacuum zones. Moreover, there is a vast family of initial data, for which the Cauchy problem possesses infinitely many dissipative weak solutions, i.e. the weak solut…
This paper surveys various aspects of the hydrodynamic formulation of the nonlinear Schrodinger equation obtained via the Madelung transform in connexion to models of quantum hydrodynamics and to compressible fluids of the Korteweg type.
For an Euler system, with dynamics generated by a potential energy functional, we propose a functional format for the relative energy and derive a relative energy identity. The latter, when applied to specific energies, yields relative energy identities for the Euler-Korteweg, the Euler-Poisson, the Quantum Hydrodynamics system, and low order approximations of the Euler-Korteweg system. For the Euler-Korteweg system we prove a stability theorem between a weak and a strong solution and an associated weak-strong uniqueness theorem. In the second part we focus on the Navier-Stokes-Korteweg system…

The aim of this paper is to show the existence of $\mathcal{R}$-bounded solution operator families for a generalized resolvent problem on the half-space arising from a compressible fluid model of Korteweg type. Such a compressible fluid model was derived by Dunn and Serrin (1985) and studied by Kotschote (2008) as an initial-boundary value problem.
The aim of this paper is to prove the existence of ${\mathcal R}$-bounded solution operator families for a resolvent problem on the upper half-space arising from a compressible fluid model of Korteweg type with free boundary condition. Such a compressible fluid model was derived by Dunn and Serrin (1985) and studied by Kotschote (2008) as a boundary value problem with non-slip boundary condition.
This paper is concerned with the existence, uniqueness and time-asymptotic stability of time periodic solutions to the compressible Navier-Stokes-Korteweg system effected by a time periodic external force in $\mathbb{R}^n$. Our analysis is based on a combination of the energy method and the time decay estimates of solutions to the linearized system.
In this paper, we consider the compressible fluid model of Korteweg type which can be used as a phase transition model. It is shown that the system admits a unique, global strong solution for small initial data in $\mathbb R^N$, $N \geq 3$. In this study, the main tools are the maximal $L_p$-$L_q$ regularity and $L_p$-$L_q$ decay properties of solutions to the linearized equations.
The high-friction limit in Euler-Korteweg equations for fluid mixtures is analyzed. The convergence of the solutions towards the zeroth-order limiting system and the first-order correction is shown, assuming suitable uniform bounds. Three results are proved: The first-order correction system is shown to be of Maxwell-Stefan type and its diffusive part is parabolic in the sense of Petrovskii. The high-friction limit towards the first-order Chapman-Enskog approximate system is proved in the weak-strong solution context for general Euler-Korteweg systems. Finally, the limit towards the zeroth-ord…
We show how to apply ideas from the theory of rough paths to the analysis of low-regularity solutions to non-linear dispersive equations. Our basic example will be the one dimensional Korteweg--de Vries (KdV) equation on a periodic domain and with initial condition in $\FF L^{α,p}$ spaces. We discuss convergence of Galerkin approximations, a modified Euler scheme and the presence of a random force of white-noise type in time.
In this paper we are interested in the barotropic compressible Navier-Stokes system endowed with a non-local capillarity tensor depending on a small parameter $ε$ such that it heuristically tends to the local Korteweg system. After giving some physical motivations related to the theory of non-classical shocks (see [28]) we prove global well-posedness (in the whole space $R^d$ with $d\geq 2$) for the non-local model and we also prove the convergence, as $ε$ goes to zero, to the solution of the local Korteweg system.
This work is devoted to proving existence of global weak solutions for a general isothermal model of capillary fluids derived by J.E Dunn and J.Serrin (1985) \cite{3DS}, which can be used as a phase transition model. We distinguish two cases when the dimension N=2 and N=1, in the first case we need that $\frac{1}ρ\in L^{\infty}$, when N=1 we get a weak solution in finite time in the energy space.
The global solutions with large initial data for the isothermal compressible fluid models of Korteweg type has been studied by many authors in recent years. However, little is known of global large solutions to the nonisothermal compressible fluid models of Korteweg type up to now. This paper is devoted to this problem, and we are concerned with the global existence of smooth and non-vacuum solutions with large initial data to the Cauchy problem of the one-dimensional nonisothermal compressible fluid models of Korteweg type. The case when the viscosity coefficient $μ(ρ)=ρ^α$, the capillarity c…
We present a new derivation for the optimal decay of \textit{arbitrary} higher order derivatives for $L^p$ solutions to the compressible fluid model of Korteweg type. This approach, based on Gevrey estimates, is to establish uniform bounds on the growth of the radius of analyticity of the solution in negative Besov norms. For that end, the maximal regularity property involving Gevrey multiplier of heat kernel and non standard product Besov estimates are well developed. Our approach is partly inspired by Oliver-Titi's work and is applicable to a wide range of dissipative systems.
In this paper we consider the Navier-Stokes-Korteweg equations for a viscous compressible fluid with capillarity effects in three space dimensions. We prove compactness of finite energy weak solutions for large initial data. In contrast with previous results regarding this system, vacuum regions are allowed in the definition of weak solutions and no additional damping terms are considered. The compactness is obtained by introducing suitable truncations of the velocity field and the mass density at different scales and use only the a priori bounds obtained by the energy and the BD entropy.
The aim of this paper is to investigate the regime of high Mach number flows for compressible barotropic fluids of Korteweg type with density dependent viscosity. In particular we consider the models for isothermal capillary and quantum compressible fluids. For the capillary case we prove the existence of weak solutions and related properties for the system without pressure, and the convergence of the solution in the high Mach number limit. This latter is proved also in the quantum case for which a weak-strong uniqueness analysis is also discussed in the framework of the so-called "augmented" …
In this paper, we consider the compressible fluid model of Korteweg type in a critical case where the derivative of pressure equals to $0$ at the given constant state. It is shown that the system admits a unique, global strong solution for small initial data in the maximal $L_p$-$L_q$ regularity class. As a result, we also prove the decay estimates of the solutions to the nonliner problem. In order to obtain the global well-posedness for the critical case, we show $L_p$-$L_q$ decay properties of solutions to the linearized equations under an additional assumption for a low frequencies.
In the first part of this paper, we prove the existence of global strong solution for Korteweg system in one dimension. In the second part, motivated by the processes of vanishing capillarity-viscosity limit in order to select the physically relevant solutions for a hyperbolic system, we show that the global strong solution of the Korteweg system converges in the case of a $γ$ law for the pressure ($P(ρ)=aρ^γ$, $γ>1$) to entropic solution of the compressible Euler equations. In particular it justifies that the Korteweg system is suitable for selecting the physical solutions in the case where t…
This paper is concerned with the large-time behavior of solutions to the Cauchy problem of the one-dimensional compressible fluid models of Korteweg type with density- and temperature-dependent viscosity, capillarity, and heat conductivity coefficients, which models the motions of compressible viscous fluids with internal capillarity. We show that the combination of the viscous contact wave with two rarefaction waves is asymptotically stable with a large initial perturbation if the strength of the composite wave and the heat conductivity coefficient satisfy some smallness conditions. The proof…
In the present article we are interested in further investigations for the barotropic compressible Navier-Stokes system endowed with a non-local capillarity we studied in [7]. Thanks to an accurate study of the associated linear system using a Lagrangian change of coordinates, we provide more precise energy estimates in terms of hybrid Besov spaces naturally depending on a threshold frequency (which is determined in function of the physical parameter) distinguishing the low and the high regimes. It allows us in particular to prove the convergence of the solutions from the non-local to the loca…
This work is devoted to prove existence of global weak solutions for a general isothermal model of capillary fluids derived by J.- E Dunn and J. Serrin (1985) [6], which can be used as a phase transition model. We improve the results of [5] by showing the existence of global weak solution in dimension two for initial data in the energy space, close to a stable equilibrium and with specific choices on the capillary coefficients. In particular we are interested in capillary coefficients approximating a constant capillarity coefficient. To finish we show the existence of global weak solution in d…
This paper studies the dissipative structure of the system of equations that describes the motion of a compressible, isothermal, viscous-capillar fluid of Korteweg type in one space dimension. It is shown that the system satisfies the genuine coupling condition of Humpherys (J. Hyperbolic Differ. Equ. 2, 2005, no. 4, 963-974), which is, in turn, an extension to higher order systems of the classical condition by Kawashima and Shizuta (Tohoku Math. J. 40, 1988, no. 3, 449-464; Hokkaido Math. J. 14, 1985, no. 2, 249-275) for second order systems. It is proved that genuine coupling implies the dec…
Formulated by Blesgen and Lowengrub and Truskinovsky, the `Navier-Stokes-Allen-Cahn' (NSAC) equations and the `Navier-Stokes-Cahn-Hilliard' (NSCH) equations describe diphasic fluid flow, combining the conservation laws for mass, momentum, and energy with a balance law for the phases, which governs the concentration of one, and thus the other, phase as an order parameter. By contrast, the `Navier-Stokes-Korteweg' (NSK) theory for the dynamics of a one-phase capillary fluid, given by Dunn and Serrin following Korteweg and Slemrod, uses only the three said conservation laws and has the mass densi…
This work is devoted to the study of the initial boundary value problem for a general non isothermal model of capillary fluids derived by J.E Dunn and J.Serrin (1985), which can be used as a phase transition model. We distinguish two cases, when the physical coefficients depend only on the density, and the general case. In the first case we can work in critical scaling spaces, and we prove global existence of solution and uniqueness for data close to a stable equilibrium. For general data, existence and uniqueness is stated on a short time interval. In the general case with physical coefficien…
In the setting of general initial data and whole space we perform a rigorous analysis of the quasineutral limit for a hydrodynamical model of a viscous plasma with capillarity tensor represented by the Navier Stokes Korteweg Poisson system. We shall provide a detailed mathematical description of the convergence process by analyzing the dispersion of the fast oscillating acoustic waves. However the standard acoustic wave analysis is not sufficient to control the high frequency oscillations in the electric field but it is necessary to estimates the dispersive properties induced by the capillarit…
We prove long-term regularity of solutions of the one-fluid Euler-Maxwell system in 3 spatial dimensions, in the case of small initial data with nontrivial vorticity.
This is the first of a series of papers devoted to the initial value problem for the Euler system of compressible fluids and augmented versions containing higher-order terms. We encompass solutions that have finite total energy and enjoy a certain symmetry (for instance, plane symmetry); these solutions may have unbounded amplitude and contain cavitation regions in which the mass density vanishes. In the present paper, we are interested in dispersive shock waves and analyze the zero viscosity-capillarity limit associated with the Navier-Stokes-Korteweg system. Specifically, we establish the ex…
We study the convergence rate of the solutions of the incompressible Euler-$α$, an inviscid second-grade complex fluid, equations to the corresponding solutions of the Euler equations, as the regularization parameter $α$ approaches zero. First we show the convergence in $H^{s}$, $s>n/2+1$, in the whole space, and that the smooth Euler-$α$ solutions exist at least as long as the corresponding solution of the Euler equations. Next we estimate the convergence rate for two-dimensional vortex patch with smooth boundaries.
We are concerned with the convergence of spectral method for the numerical solution of the initial-boundary value problem associated to the Korteweg-de Vries-Kawahara equation (in short Kawahara equation), which is a transport equation perturbed by dispersive terms of 3rd and 5th order. This equation appears in several fluid dynamics problems. It describes the evolution of small but finite amplitude long waves in various problems in fluid dynamics. These equations are discretized in space by the standard Fourier- Galerkin spectral method and in time by the explicit leap-frog scheme. For the re…
Vlasov equations can be formally derived from N-body dynamics in the mean-field limit. In some suitable singular limits, they may themselves converge to fluid dynamics equations. Motivated by this heuristic, we introduce natural scalings under which the incompressible Euler equations can be rigorously derived from N-body dynamics with repulsive Coulomb interaction. Our analysis is based on the modulated energy methods of Brenier and Serfaty.
In this paper, we consider the quasi-neutral limit of a three dimensional Euler-Poisson system of compressible fluids coupled to a magnetic field. We prove that, as Debye length tends to zero, periodic initial-value problems of the model have unique smooth solutions existing in the time interval where the ideal incompressible magnetohydrodynamic equations has smooth solution. Meanwhile, it is proved that smooth solutions converge to solutions of incompressible magnetohydrodynamic equations with a sharp convergence rate in the process of quasi-neutral limit.
