The Euler-Korteweg equations are a modification of the Euler equations that takes into account capillary effects. In the general case they form a quasi-linear system that can be recast as a degenerate Schrödinger type equation. Local well-posedness (in subcritical Sobolev spaces) was obtained by Benzoni-Danchin-Descombes in any space dimension, however, except in some special case (semi-linear with particular pressure) no global well-posedness is known. We prove here that under a natural stability condition on the pressure, global well-posedness holds in dimension $d\geq 3$ for small irrotational initial data. The proof is based on a modified energy estimate, standard dispersive properties if $d\geq 5$, and a careful study of the nonlinear structure of the quadratic terms in dimension $3$ and $4$ involving the theory of space time resonance.
The aim of this manuscript is to study the influence of the vorticity on the existence time in fluid systems for which global smoothness and decay is known in the case of small irrotational data. We focus on two examples: the Euler-Korteweg system and the two-fluid Euler Maxwell system. We prove that the lower bound of the lifespan of these systems is no less than the inverse of the $H^s$ $(s>5/2)$ norm of the rotational part of the initial velocity. Our approach is based on energy estimates and the fast time decay results of global solutions to these systems with small irrotational initial da…
We consider the Euler-Korteweg system with space periodic boundary conditions $ x \in \mathbb T^d $. We prove a local in time existence result of classical solutions for irrotational velocity fields requiring natural minimal regularity assumptions on the initial data.
In this article we study the principle of energy conservation for the Euler-Korteweg system. We formulate an Onsager-type sufficient regularity condition for weak solutions of the Euler-Korteweg system to conserve the total energy. The result applies to the system of Quantum Hydrodynamics.
We establish a relative energy framework for the Euler-Korteweg system with non-convex energy. This allows us to prove weak-strong uniqueness and to show convergence to a Cahn-Hilliard system in the large friction limit. We also use relative energy to show that solutions of Euler-Korteweg with convex energy converge to solutions of the Euler system in the vanishing capillarity limit, as long as the latter admits sufficiently regular strong solutions.
We construct global dissipative solutions on the torus of dimension at most three of the defocusing isothermal Euler-Langevin-Korteweg system, which corresponds to the Euler-Korteweg system of compressible quantum fluids with an isothermal pressure law and a linear drag term with respect to the velocity. In particular, the isothermal feature prevents the energy and the BD-entropy from being positive. Adapting standard approximation arguments we first show the existence of global weak solutions to the defocusing isothermal Navier-Stokes-Langevin-Korteweg system. Introducing a relative entropy f…
The aim of this paper is to investigate the singular relaxation limits for the Euler-Korteweg and the Navier-Stokes-Korteweg system in the high friction regime. We shall prove that the viscosity term is present only in higher orders in the proposed scaling and therefore it does not affect the limiting dynamics, and the two models share the same equilibrium equation. The analysis of the limit is carried out using the relative entropy techniques in the framework of weak, finite energy solutions of the relaxation models converging toward smooth solutions of the equilibrium. The results proved her…
Under a natural stability condition on the pressure, it is known that for small irrotational initial data, the solutions of the Euler-Korteweg system are global in time. When the initial velocity has a small rotational part, we obtain a lower bound on the time of existence that depends only on the rotational part. In the zero vorticity limit we recover the previous global well-posedness result. Independently of this analysis, we also provide (in a special case) a simple example of solution that blows up in finite time.
In this paper, the main objective is to generalize to the Navier-Stokes-Korteweg (with density dependent viscosities satisfying the BD relation) and Euler-Korteweg systems a recent relative entropy [proposed by D. Bresch, P. Noble and J.--P. Vila, (2016)] introduced for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations with a linear density dependent shear viscosity and a zero bulk viscosity. As a concrete application, this helps to justify mathematically the convergence between global weak solutions of the quantum Navier-Stokes system [recently obtained simultaneously by I. Lacroix-Violet and A. Vasse…
We prove the convergence in the transonic limit of two-dimensional traveling waves of the E-K system, up to rescaling, toward a ground state of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili Equation. Similarly, in dimension one we prove the convergence in the transonic limit of solitons toward the soliton of the Korteweg de Vries equation.
We investigate the existence and properties of traveling waves for the Euler-Korteweg system with general capillarity and pressure. Our main result is the existence in dimension two of waves with arbitrarily small energy. They are obtained as minimizers of a modified energy with fixed momentum. The proof follows various ideas developed for the Gross-Pitaevskii equation (and more generally nonlinear Schrödinger equations with non zero limit at infinity). Even in the Schrödinger case, the fact that we work with the hydrodynamical variables and a general pressure law both brings new difficulties …
In this paper we analyze the high friction regime for the Navier Stokes Korteweg equations for multicomponent systems. According to the shape of the mixing and friction terms, we shall perform two limits: the high friction limit toward an equilibrium system for the limit densities and the barycentric velocity, and, after an appropriate time scaling, the diffusive relaxation toward parabolic, gradient flow equations for the limit densities. The rigorous justification of these limits is done by means of relative entropy techniques in the framework of weak, finite energy solutions of the relaxati…
We consider a general Euler-Korteweg-Poisson system in $R^3$, supplemented with the space periodic boundary conditions, where the quantum hydrodynamics equations and the classical fluid dynamics equations with capillarity are recovered as particular examples. We show that the system admits infinitely many global-in-time weak solutions for any sufficiently smooth initial data including the case of a vanishing initial density - the vacuum zones. Moreover, there is a vast family of initial data, for which the Cauchy problem possesses infinitely many dissipative weak solutions, i.e. the weak solut…
For an Euler system, with dynamics generated by a potential energy functional, we propose a functional format for the relative energy and derive a relative energy identity. The latter, when applied to specific energies, yields relative energy identities for the Euler-Korteweg, the Euler-Poisson, the Quantum Hydrodynamics system, and low order approximations of the Euler-Korteweg system. For the Euler-Korteweg system we prove a stability theorem between a weak and a strong solution and an associated weak-strong uniqueness theorem. In the second part we focus on the Navier-Stokes-Korteweg system…
We show that solitary waves for the 2D Euler-Korteweg model for capillary fluids display nonlinear instability when subjected to transverse perturbations.
The high-friction limit in Euler-Korteweg equations for fluid mixtures is analyzed. The convergence of the solutions towards the zeroth-order limiting system and the first-order correction is shown, assuming suitable uniform bounds. Three results are proved: The first-order correction system is shown to be of Maxwell-Stefan type and its diffusive part is parabolic in the sense of Petrovskii. The high-friction limit towards the first-order Chapman-Enskog approximate system is proved in the weak-strong solution context for general Euler-Korteweg systems. Finally, the limit towards the zeroth-ord…
We prove that small smooth irrotational but charged perturbations of a constant background are global and go back to equilibrium in the 3D electron Euler-Poissson equation.
In this article, we study small perturbations of the family of Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker cosmological background solutions to the Euler-Einstein system with a positive cosmological constant in 1 + 3 dimensions. The background solutions describe an initially uniform quiet fluid of positive energy density evolving in a spacetime undergoing accelerated expansion. We show that under the equation of state p = c_s^2*(energy density), 0 < c_s^2 < 1/3, the background solutions are globally future asymptotically stable under small irrotational perturbations. In particular, we prove that the p…
We review recent progress on the long-time regularity of solutions of the Cauchy problem for the water waves equations, in two and three dimensions. We begin by introducing the free boundary Euler equations and discussing the local existence of solutions using the paradifferential approach, as in [7, 1, 2]. We then describe in a unified framework, using the Eulerian formulation, global existence results for three dimensional and two dimensional gravity waves, see [70, 146, 145, 87, 5, 6, 79, 80, 136], and our joint result with Deng and Pausader [60] on global regularity for the 3D gravity-capi…
In the first part of this paper, we prove the existence of global strong solution for Korteweg system in one dimension. In the second part, motivated by the processes of vanishing capillarity-viscosity limit in order to select the physically relevant solutions for a hyperbolic system, we show that the global strong solution of the Korteweg system converges in the case of a $γ$ law for the pressure ($P(ρ)=aρ^γ$, $γ>1$) to entropic solution of the compressible Euler equations. In particular it justifies that the Korteweg system is suitable for selecting the physical solutions in the case where t…
We give an extremely short proof that the free-surface incompressible, irrotational Euler equations with regular initial condition can form a finite time singularity in 2D or 3D. Thus, we provide a simple view of the problem studied by Castro, Cordoba, Fefferman, Gancedo, Lopez-Fernadez, Gomez-Serrano and Coutand, Shkoller.
In this paper, a compensated compactness framework is established for sonic-subsonic approximate solutions to the $n$-dimensional$(n\geq 2)$ Euler equations for steady irrotational flow that may contain stagnation points. This compactness framework holds provided that the approximate solutions are uniformly bounded and satisfy $H^{-1}_{loc}(Ω)$ compactness conditions. As illustration, we show the existence of sonic-subsonic weak solution to n-dimensional$(n\geq 2)$ Euler equations for steady irrotational flow past obstacles or through an infinitely long nozzle. This is the first result concern…

In this paper, we prove a new type of energy estimates for the compressible Euler's equation with free boundary, with a boundary part and an interior part. These can be thought of as a generalization of the energies in Christodoulou and Lindblad [CL] to the compressible case and do not require the fluid to be irrotational. In addition, we show that our estimates are in fact uniform in the sound speed. As a consequence, we obtain convergence of solutions of compressible Euler equations with a free boundary to solutions of the incompressible equations, generalizing the result of Ebin [Eb] to whe…
This is the first of a series of papers devoted to the initial value problem for the Euler system of compressible fluids and augmented versions containing higher-order terms. We encompass solutions that have finite total energy and enjoy a certain symmetry (for instance, plane symmetry); these solutions may have unbounded amplitude and contain cavitation regions in which the mass density vanishes. In the present paper, we are interested in dispersive shock waves and analyze the zero viscosity-capillarity limit associated with the Navier-Stokes-Korteweg system. Specifically, we establish the ex…
The aim of this short paper is threefold. First, we develop an implicit generalization of a constitutive relation introduced by Korteweg [10] that can describe the phenomenon of capillarity. Second, using a sub-class of the constitutive relations (implicit Euler equations), we show that even in that simple situation more than one of the members of the sub-class may be able to describe one or a set of experiments one is interested in describing, and we must determine which amongst these constitutive relations is the best by culling the class by systematically comparing against an increasing set…
The fundamental "two-fluid" model for describing plasma dynamics is given by the Euler-Maxwell system, in which compressible ion and electron fluids interact with their own self-consistent electromagnetic field. We prove global stability of a constant neutral background, in the sense that irrotational, smooth and localized perturbations of a constant background with small amplitude lead to global smooth solutions in three space dimensions for the Euler-Maxwell system. Our construction applies equally well to other plasma models such as the Euler-Poisson system for two-fluids and a relativistic…
The hydrodynamic evolution of self-gravitating gaseous stars is governed by the Euler-Poisson equations. We study the structure of the linear approximation of barotropic perturbations around spherically symmetric equilibria based on functional analytic tools. In contrast to folklore, we show that the spectrum of the linearized operator for general perturbations is not of the Sturm-Liouville type unless the perturbations are restricted. In particular, we prove that it is of the Sturm-Liouville type for irrotational perturbations.
In this paper, we consider the long wavelength limit for the quantum Euler-Poisson equation. Under the Gardner-Morikawa transform, we derive the quantum Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation by a singular perturbation method. We show that the KdV dynamics can be seen at time interval of order $O(ε^{-3/2})$. When the nondimensional quantum parameter $H=2$, it reduces to the inviscid Burgers equation.
We study stationary homogeneous solutions to the 3D Euler equation. The problem is motivated be recent exclusions of self-similar blowup for Euler and its relation to Onsager conjecture and intermittency. We reveal several new classes of solutions and prove rigidity properties in specific categories of genuinely 3D solutions. In particular, irrotational solutions are characterized by vanishing of the Bernoulli function; and tangential flows are necessarily 2D axisymmetric pure rotations. In several cases solutions are excluded altogether. The arguments reveal geodesic features of the Euler flo…
A compactness framework is established for approximate solutions to subsonic-sonic flows governed by the steady full Euler equations for compressible fluids in arbitrary dimension. The existing compactness frameworks for the two-dimensional irrotational case do not directly apply for the steady full Euler equations in higher dimensions. The new compactness framework we develop applies for both non-homentropic and rotational flows. One of our main observations is that the compactness can be achieved by using only natural weak estimates for the mass balance and the vorticity, along with the Bern…

We study the 1-d isentropic Euler equations with time-decayed damping \begin{equation} \left\{ \begin{aligned} &\partial_t ρ+\partial_x(ρu)=0, \\ &\partial_t(ρu)+ \partial_x(ρu^2)+\partial_xp(ρ)=-\fracμ{1+t}ρu,\\ &ρ|_{t=0}=1+\varepsilonρ_0(x),u|_{t=0}=\varepsilon u_0(x). \end{aligned} \right. \nonumber \end{equation} This work is inspired by a recent work of F. Hou, I. Witt and H.C. Yin \cite{Hou01}. In \cite{Hou01}, they proved a global existence and blow-up result of 3-d irrotational Euler flow with time-dependent damping. In the 1-d case, we will prove a different result when the damping de…
A fundamental two-fluid model for describing dynamics of a plasma is the Euler-Poisson system, in which compressible ion and electron fluids interact with their self-consistent electrostatic force. Global smooth electron dynamics were constructed in Guo due to dispersive effect of the electric field. In this paper, we construct global smooth irrotational solutions with small amplitude for ion dynamics in the Euler-Poisson system.
The one-dimensional Euler-Poisson system arises in the study of phenomena of plasma such as plasma solitons, plasma sheaths, and double layers. When the system is rescaled by the Gardner-Morikawa transformation, the rescaled system is known to be formally approximated by the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation. In light of this, we show existence of solitary wave solutions of the Euler-Poisson system in the stretched moving frame given by the transformation, and prove that they converge to the solitary wave solution of the associated KdV equation as the small amplitude parameter tends to zero. Ou…
We show how to apply ideas from the theory of rough paths to the analysis of low-regularity solutions to non-linear dispersive equations. Our basic example will be the one dimensional Korteweg--de Vries (KdV) equation on a periodic domain and with initial condition in $\FF L^{α,p}$ spaces. We discuss convergence of Galerkin approximations, a modified Euler scheme and the presence of a random force of white-noise type in time.
In this paper, we show the shock formation of the solutions to the 3-dimensional (3D) compressible isentropic and irrotational Euler equations with damping for the initial short pulse data which was first introduced by D.Christodoulou\cite{christodoulou2007}. Due to the damping effect, the largeness of the initial data is necessary for the shock formation and we will work on the class of large data (in energy sense). Similar to the undamped case, the formation of shock is characterized by the collapse of the characteristic hypersurfaces and the vanishing of the inverse foliation density functi…
In this paper, we show the shock formation to the compressible Euler equations with time-dependent damping $\frac{a\p u}{(1+t)^{\lam}}$ in three spatial dimensions without any symmetry conditions. It's well-known that for $\lam>1$, the damping is too weak to prevent the shock formation for suitably large data. However, the classical results only showed the finite existence of the solution. Follow the work by D.Christodoulou in\cite{christodoulou2007}, starting from the initial isentropic and irrotational short pulse data, we show the formation of shock is characterized by the collapse of the c…
For one dimensional or multidimensional compressible Euler system of polytropic gases, it is well known that the smooth solution will generally develop singularities in finite time. However, for three dimensional Chaplygin gases, due to the crucial role of "null condition" in the potential equation which is derived by the irrotational and isentropic flow, P.Godin in [9] has proved the global existence of a smooth 3-D spherically symmetric flow with variable entropy when the initial data are of small smooth perturbations with compact supports to a constant state. It is noted that there are some…
