In this paper we consider the Navier-Stokes-Korteweg equations for a viscous compressible fluid with capillarity effects in three space dimensions. We prove compactness of finite energy weak solutions for large initial data. In contrast with previous results regarding this system, vacuum regions are allowed in the definition of weak solutions and no additional damping terms are considered. The compactness is obtained by introducing suitable truncations of the velocity field and the mass density at different scales and use only the a priori bounds obtained by the energy and the BD entropy.
In this paper we are interested in the barotropic compressible Navier-Stokes system endowed with a non-local capillarity tensor depending on a small parameter $ε$ such that it heuristically tends to the local Korteweg system. After giving some physical motivations related to the theory of non-classical shocks (see [28]) we prove global well-posedness (in the whole space $R^d$ with $d\geq 2$) for the non-local model and we also prove the convergence, as $ε$ goes to zero, to the solution of the local Korteweg system.

In the present article we are interested in further investigations for the barotropic compressible Navier-Stokes system endowed with a non-local capillarity we studied in [7]. Thanks to an accurate study of the associated linear system using a Lagrangian change of coordinates, we provide more precise energy estimates in terms of hybrid Besov spaces naturally depending on a threshold frequency (which is determined in function of the physical parameter) distinguishing the low and the high regimes. It allows us in particular to prove the convergence of the solutions from the non-local to the loca…
This work is devoted to prove existence of global weak solutions for a general isothermal model of capillary fluids derived by J.- E Dunn and J. Serrin (1985) [6], which can be used as a phase transition model. We improve the results of [5] by showing the existence of global weak solution in dimension two for initial data in the energy space, close to a stable equilibrium and with specific choices on the capillary coefficients. In particular we are interested in capillary coefficients approximating a constant capillarity coefficient. To finish we show the existence of global weak solution in d…
The aim of this paper is to investigate the regime of high Mach number flows for compressible barotropic fluids of Korteweg type with density dependent viscosity. In particular we consider the models for isothermal capillary and quantum compressible fluids. For the capillary case we prove the existence of weak solutions and related properties for the system without pressure, and the convergence of the solution in the high Mach number limit. This latter is proved also in the quantum case for which a weak-strong uniqueness analysis is also discussed in the framework of the so-called "augmented" …
We study the inhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes system endowed with a general capillary term. Thanks to recent methods based on Lagrangian change of variables, we obtain local well-posedness in critical Besov spaces (even if the integration index p is different from 2) and for variable viscosity and capillary terms. In the case of constant coefficients and for initial data that are perturbations of a constant state, we are able to prove that the lifespan goes to infinity as the capillary coefficient goes to zero, connecting our result to the global existence result obtained by Danchin …
In this article we study three capillary compressible models (the classical local Navier-Stokes-Korteweg system and two non-local models) for large initial data, bounded away from zero, and with a reference pressure state $\barρ$ which is not necessarily stable ($P'(\barρ)$ can be non-positive). We prove that these systems have a unique local in time solution and we study the convergence rate of the solutions of the non-local models towards the local Korteweg model. The results are given for constant viscous coefficients and we explain how to extend them for density dependant coefficients.
Global existence and uniqueness of the density-dependent incompressible Navier-Stokes-Korteweg system with variable capillarity and viscosity coefficients
We show that solitary waves for the 2D Euler-Korteweg model for capillary fluids display nonlinear instability when subjected to transverse perturbations.
We consider the Rosenau-Korteweg-de Vries-regularized long wave and Rosenau- Korteweg-de Vries equations, which contain nonlinear dispersive effects. We prove that, as the diffusion parameter tends to zero, the solutions of the dispersive equations converge to the unique entropy solution of a scalar conservation law. The proof relies on deriving suitable a priori estimates together with an application of the compensated compactness method in the L^p setting.
This work is devoted to proving existence of global weak solutions for a general isothermal model of capillary fluids derived by J.E Dunn and J.Serrin (1985) \cite{3DS}, which can be used as a phase transition model. We distinguish two cases when the dimension N=2 and N=1, in the first case we need that $\frac{1}ρ\in L^{\infty}$, when N=1 we get a weak solution in finite time in the energy space.
In this paper we consider the Cauchy problem to the Korteweg system with the general pressure in dimension $d\geq2$, and establish the global well-posedness of strong solution for the small initial data in $L^p$ type critical Besov spaces by using the Friedrich method and compactness arguments. Furthermore, we also obtain the optimal decay rate for the Korteweg system in $L^2$ type Besov spaces.
In the present article we consider a capillary compressible system introduced by C. Rohde after works of Bandon, Lin and Rogers, called the order-parameter model, and whose aim is to reduce the numerical difficulties that one encounters in the case of the classical local Korteweg system (involving derivatives of order three) or the non-local system (also introduced by Rohde after works of Van der Waals, and which involves a convolution operator). We prove that this system has a unique global solution for initial data close to an equilibrium and we precisely study the convergence of this soluti…
We prove the existence of multi-soliton and kink-multi-soliton solutions of the Euler-Korteweg system in dimension one. Such solutions behaves asymptotically in time like several traveling waves far away from each other. A kink is a traveling wave with different limits at $\pm$$\infty$. The main assumption is the linear stability of the solitons, and we prove that this assumption is satisfied at least in the transonic limit. The proof relies on a classical approach based on energy estimates and a compactness argument.
A combined incompressible and vanishing capillarity limit in the barotropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations for smooth solutions is proved. The equations are considered on the two-dimensional torus with well prepared initial data. The momentum equation contains a rotational term originating from a Coriolis force, a general Korteweg-type tensor modeling capillary effects, and a density-dependent viscosity. The limiting model is the viscous quasi-geostrophic equation for the "rotated" velocity potential. The proof of the singular limit is based on the modulated energy method with a careful …
We consider the Rosenau-Korteweg-de Vries-equation, which contains nonlinear dispersive effects. We prove that as the diffusion parameter tends to zero, the solution of the dispersive equation converge to the discontinous weak solutions of the Burgers equation. The proof relies on deriving suitable a priori estimates together with an application of tha compansated compactness method in the L^p setting.
In this article, we prove existence of a non-scattering solution, which is minimal in some sense, to the mass-subcritical generalized Korteweg-de Vries (gKdV) equation in the scale critical ^L^r space. We construct this solution by a concentration compactness argument. Then, key ingredients are a linear profile decomposition result adopted to ^L^r-framework and approximation of solutions to the gKdV equation which involves rapid linear oscillation by means of solutions to the nonlinear Schr"odinger equation.
In the present paper we study a singular perturbation problem for a Navier-Stokes-Korteweg model with Coriolis force. Namely, we perform the incompressible and fast rotation asymptotics simultaneously, while we keep the capillarity coefficient constant in order to capture surface tension effects in the limit. We consider here the case of variable rotation axis: we prove the convergence to a linear parabolic-type equation with variable coefficients. The proof of the result relies on compensated compactness arguments. Besides, we look for minimal regularity assumptions on the variations of the a…
This work is devoted to prove the existence of global strong solution in dimension $N\geq 2$ for a isothermal model of capillary fluids derived by J.E Dunn and J.Serrin (1985) (see \cite{fDS}), which can be used as a phase transition model. We will restrict us to the case of the so called compressible Navier-Stokes system with quantum pressure which corresponds to consider the capillary coefficient $κ(ρ)=\frac{κ_1}ρ$ with $κ_1>0$. In a first part we prove the existence of strong solution in finite time for large initial data with a precise bound by below on the life span $T^*$. This one depend…
This work is devoted to prove new entropy estimates for a general isothermal model of capillary fluids derived by J.E Dunn and J.Serrin (1985) (see \cite{fDS}), which can be used as a phase transition model. More precisely we will derive new estimates for the density and we will give a new structure for the Korteweg system which allow us to obtain the existence of global weak solution. The key of the proof comes from the introduction of a new effective velocity. The proof is widely inspired from the works of A. Mellet and A. Vasseur (see \cite{fMV}). In a second part, we shall give a Prody-Serr…
The Euler-Korteweg equations are a modification of the Euler equations that takes into account capillary effects. In the general case they form a quasi-linear system that can be recast as a degenerate Schrödinger type equation. Local well-posedness (in subcritical Sobolev spaces) was obtained by Benzoni-Danchin-Descombes in any space dimension, however, except in some special case (semi-linear with particular pressure) no global well-posedness is known. We prove here that under a natural stability condition on the pressure, global well-posedness holds in dimension $d\geq 3$ for small irrotatio…
Since its elaboration by Whitham, almost fifty years ago, modulation theory has been known to be closely related to the stability of periodic traveling waves. However, it is only recently that this relationship has been elucidated, and that fully nonlinear results have been obtained. These only concern dissipative systems though: reaction-diffusion systems were first considered by Doelman, Sandstede, Scheel, and Schneider [Mem. Amer. Math. Soc. 2009], and viscous systems of conservation laws have been addressed by Johnson, Noble, Rodrigues, and Zumbrun [preprint 2012]. Here, only nondissipativ…
In this paper, the main objective is to generalize to the Navier-Stokes-Korteweg (with density dependent viscosities satisfying the BD relation) and Euler-Korteweg systems a recent relative entropy [proposed by D. Bresch, P. Noble and J.--P. Vila, (2016)] introduced for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations with a linear density dependent shear viscosity and a zero bulk viscosity. As a concrete application, this helps to justify mathematically the convergence between global weak solutions of the quantum Navier-Stokes system [recently obtained simultaneously by I. Lacroix-Violet and A. Vasse…
This work is devoted to the study of the initial boundary value problem for a general non isothermal model of capillary fluids derived by J.E Dunn and J.Serrin (1985), which can be used as a phase transition model. We distinguish two cases, when the physical coefficients depend only on the density, and the general case. In the first case we can work in critical scaling spaces, and we prove global existence of solution and uniqueness for data close to a stable equilibrium. For general data, existence and uniqueness is stated on a short time interval. In the general case with physical coefficien…
We establish a smoothing result for the generalized KdV (gKdV) on the torus with polynomial non-linearity, damping, and forcing that matches the smoothing level for the gKdV at $H^1$. As a consequence, we establish the existence of a global attractor for this equation as well as its compactness in $H^s(\mathbb{T})$, $s\in (1,2).$
In the first main result of this paper we prove that one can approximate discontinious solutions of the 1d Navier Stokes system with solutions of the 1d Navier-Stokes-Korteweg system as the capilarity parameter tends to 0. Moreover, we allow the viscosity coefficients $μ$ = $μ$ ($ρ$) to degenerate near vaccum. In order to obtain this result, we propose two main technical novelties. First of all, we provide an upper bound for the density verifing NSK that does not degenerate when the capillarity coefficient tends to 0. Second of all, we are able to show that the positive part of the effective v…
Formulated by Blesgen and Lowengrub and Truskinovsky, the `Navier-Stokes-Allen-Cahn' (NSAC) equations and the `Navier-Stokes-Cahn-Hilliard' (NSCH) equations describe diphasic fluid flow, combining the conservation laws for mass, momentum, and energy with a balance law for the phases, which governs the concentration of one, and thus the other, phase as an order parameter. By contrast, the `Navier-Stokes-Korteweg' (NSK) theory for the dynamics of a one-phase capillary fluid, given by Dunn and Serrin following Korteweg and Slemrod, uses only the three said conservation laws and has the mass densi…
This work is devoted to the study of the initial boundary value problem for a general isothermal model of capillary fluids derived by J.E Dunn and J.Serrin (1985), which can be used as a phase transition model. We will prove the existence of strong solutions in finite time with discontinuous initial density, more precisely $\lnρ_{0}$ is in $B^{\N}_{2,\infty}(\R^{N})$. Our analysis improves the results of \cite{fDD} and \cite{fH1}, \cite{fH2} by working in space of infinite energy. In passing our result allow to consider initial data with discontinuous interfaces, whereas in all the literature …
In the setting of general initial data and whole space we perform a rigorous analysis of the quasineutral limit for a hydrodynamical model of a viscous plasma with capillarity tensor represented by the Navier Stokes Korteweg Poisson system. We shall provide a detailed mathematical description of the convergence process by analyzing the dispersion of the fast oscillating acoustic waves. However the standard acoustic wave analysis is not sufficient to control the high frequency oscillations in the electric field but it is necessary to estimates the dispersive properties induced by the capillarit…
A class of nonlinear Schrödinger equations involving a triad of power law terms together with a de Broglie-Bohm potential is shown to admit symmetry reduction to a hybrid Ermakov-Painlevé II equation which is linked, in turn, to the integrable Painlevé XXXIV equation. A nonlinear Schrödinger encapsulation of a Korteweg-type capillary system is thereby used in the isolation of such a Ermakov-Painlevé II reduction valid for a multi-parameter class of free energy functions. Iterated application of a Bäcklund transformation then allows the construction of novel classes of exact solutions of the no…
Bresch-Desjardins-Gisclon-Sart have derived that the capillarity can slow {down} the growth rate of Rayleigh-Taylor (RT) instability in the capillary fluids based on the linearized two-dimensional (2D) Navier-Stokes-Korteweg equations in 2008. Motivated by their linear theory, we further investigate the nonlinear RT problem for the 2D incompressible case in a horizontally periodic slab domain with Navier boundary condition, and rigorously verify that the RT instability can be inhibited by capillarity under our 2D setting. More precisely, if the RT density profile $\barρ$ satisfies an additiona…
This work is devoted to the study of the initial boundary value problem for a general isothermal model of capillary fluids derived by J.E Dunn and J.Serrin (1985), which can be used as a phase transition model. We will prove the existence of local and global (under a condition of smallness on the initial data) strong solutions with discontinuous initial density when $\lnρ_{0}$ belongs in the Besov space $B^{\N}_{2,\infty}(\R^{N})$.The main difficulty concerns the proof of new estimate of maximum principle type for the linear system associated to the Korteweg system, the proof is based on a cha…
This is the first of a series of papers devoted to the initial value problem for the Euler system of compressible fluids and augmented versions containing higher-order terms. We encompass solutions that have finite total energy and enjoy a certain symmetry (for instance, plane symmetry); these solutions may have unbounded amplitude and contain cavitation regions in which the mass density vanishes. In the present paper, we are interested in dispersive shock waves and analyze the zero viscosity-capillarity limit associated with the Navier-Stokes-Korteweg system. Specifically, we establish the ex…

This paper aims at completing an earlier work of Russell and Zhang to study internal control problems for the distributed parameter system described by the Korteweg-de Vries equation on a periodic domain T^1. In their article, Russell and Zhang showed that the system is locally exactly controllable and locally exponentially stabilizable when the control acts on an arbitrary nonempty subdomain of T^1. In this paper, we show that the system is in fact globally exactly controllable and globally exponentially stabilizable. The global exponential stabilizability corresponding to a natural feedback …
We address the long time behavior of solutions of the stochastic Korteweg-de Vries equation $ du + (\partial^3_x u +u\partial_x u +λu)dt = f dt+ΦdW_t$ on ${\mathbb R}$ where $f$ is a deterministic force. We prove that the Feller property holds and establish the existence of an invariant measure. The tightness is established with the help of the asymptotic compactness, which is carried out using the Aldous criterion.
We present an existence and stability theory for gravity-capillary solitary waves with constant vorticity on the surface of a body of water of finite depth. Exploiting a rotational version of the classical variational principle, we prove the existence of a minimiser of the wave energy $\mathcal H$ subject to the constraint $\mathcal I=2μ$, where $\mathcal I$ is the wave momentum and $0< μ\ll 1$. Since $\mathcal H$ and $\mathcal I$ are both conserved quantities a standard argument asserts the stability of the set $D_μ$ of minimisers: solutions starting near $D_μ$ remain close to $D_μ$ in a suit…
This work is devoted to prove the exponential decay for the energy of solutions of a higher order Korteweg -de Vries (KdV)--Benjamin-Bona-Mahony (BBM) equation on a periodic domain with a localized damping mechanism. Following the method in [11], which combines energy estimates, multipliers and compactness arguments, the problem is reduced to prove the Unique Continuation Property (UCP) for weak solutions of the model. Then, this is done by deriving Carleman estimates for a system of coupled elliptic-hyperbolic equations.
We consider the defocusing supercritical generalized Korteweg-de Vries (gKdV) equation $\partial_t u+\partial_x^3u-\partial_x(u^{k+1})=0$, where $k>4$ is an even integer number. We show that if the initial data $u_0$ belongs to $H^1$ then the corresponding solution is global and scatters in $H^1$. Our method of proof is inspired on the compactness method introduced by C. Kenig and F. Merle.

We investigate the long-time behavior of solutions to the isothermal Euler, Korteweg or quantum Navier Stokes equations, as well as generalizations of these equations where the convex pressure law is asymptotically linear near vacuum. By writing the system with a suitable time-dependent scaling we prove that the densities of global solutions display universal dispersion rate and asymptotic profile. This result applies to weak solutions defined in an appropriate way. In the exactly isothermal case, we establish the compactness of bounded sets of such weak solutions, by introducing modified entr…
We consider the generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation in the supercritical case, and we are interested in solutions which converge to a soliton in large time in H^1. In the subcritical case, such solutions are forced to be exactly solitons by variational characterization, but no such result exists in the supercritical case. In this paper, we first construct a "special solution" in this case by a compactness argument, i.e. a solution which converges to a soliton without being a soliton. Secondly, using a description of the spectrum of the linearized operator around a soliton due to Pego and We…
The aim of this work is to consider the internal stabilization of a nonlinear coupled system of two Korteweg--de Vries equations in a finite interval under the effect of a very weak localized damping. The system was introduced by Gear and Grimshaw to model the interactions of two-dimensional, long, internal gravity waves propagation in a stratified fluid. Considering feedback controls laws and using Compactness--Uniqueness Argument, which reduce the problem to use a unique continuation property, we establish the exponential stability of the weak solutions when the exponent in the nonlinear ter…
