Proper X-ray radiation design (via dynamic fluence field modulation, FFM) allows to reduce effective radiation dose in computed tomography without compromising image quality. It takes into account patient anatomy, radiation sensitivity of different organs and tissues, and location of regions of interest. We account all these factors within a general convex optimization framework.
Herein we report the first in-human transcranial imaging of brain function using photoacoustic computed tomography. Functional responses to benchmark motor tasks were imaged on both the skull-less and the skull-intact hemispheres of a hemicraniectomy patient. The observed brain responses in these preliminary results demonstrate the potential of photoacoustic computed tomography for achieving transcranial functional imaging.

CT imaging has several variety of applications from medical diagnosis to industrial non-destructive testing. In this paper, we review computed tomography imaging modality and its applications in screening, diagnosis, and treatment and study some of t…
The phosphor nanoparticles made of doped semiconductors, pre-excited by well-collimated X-ray radiation, were recently reported for their light emission upon NIR light stimulation. The characteristics of X-ray energy storage and NIR stimulated emission is highly desirable to design targeting probes and improve molecular and cellular imaging. Here we propose stored luminescence computed tomography (SLCT), perform realistic numerical simulation, and demonstrate a much-improved spatial resolution in a preclinical research context. The future opportunities are also discussed along this direction.
Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images can be used for dose calculation in adaptive radiation therapy (ART). The main challenges are the large artefacts and inaccurate Hounsfield unit (HU) values. Currently, deformed planning CT images are often used for this purpose, although anatomical accuracy might be a concern. Ideally, we would like to convert CBCT images to CT images with artifacts removed or greatly reduced and HU values corrected while keeping the anatomical accuracy. Recently, deep learning has achieved great success in image-to-image translation tasks. It is very difficult to a…
A computer-aided detection (CAD) system for the identification of pulmonary nodules in low-dose multi-detector helical Computed Tomography (CT) images with 1.25 mm slice thickness is presented. The basic modules of our lung-CAD system, a dot-enhancement filter for nodule candidate selection and a neural classifier for false-positive finding reduction, are described. The results obtained on the collected database of lung CT scans are discussed.
Purpose: Electron density is the most important tissue property influencing photon and ion dose distributions in radiotherapy patients. Dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) enables the determination of electron density by combining the information on photon attenuation obtained at two different tube voltages. Most algorithms suggested so far use the CT numbers provided after image reconstruction as input parameters, i.e. are imaged-based. To explore the accuracy that can be achieved with these approaches, we quantify the intrinsic methodological and calibration uncertainty of the seemingly s…
In conventional absorption based x-ray computed tomography (CT), the noise variance in reconstructed CT images scales with spatial resolution following an inverse cubic relationship. Without reconstruction, in x-ray absorption radiography, the noise variance scales as an inverse square with spatial resolution. In this letter we report that while the inverse square relationship holds for differential phase contrast projection imaging, there exists an anomalous scaling law in differential phase contrast CT, where the noise variance scales with spatial resolution following an inverse linear relat…

This paper describes the mathematical structure of the ill-posed nonlinear inverse problem of low-dose dental cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and explains the advantages of a deep learning-based approach to the reconstruction of computed tomography images over conventional regularization methods. This paper explains the underlying reasons why dental CBCT is more ill-posed than standard computed tomography. Despite this severe ill-posedness, the demand for dental CBCT systems is rapidly growing because of their cost competitiveness and low radiation dose. We then describe the limitations o…
In a standard computed tomography (CT) image, pixels having the same Hounsfield Units (HU) can correspond to different materials and it is therefore challenging to differentiate and quantify materials. Dual-energy CT (DECT) is desirable to differentiate multiple materials, but DECT scanners are not widely available as single-energy CT (SECT) scanners. Here we purpose a deep learning approach to perform DECT imaging by using standard SECT data. We designed a predenoising and difference learning mechanism to generate DECT images from SECT data. The performance of the deep learning-based DECT app…

Hadron therapy for treating cancer has become one of the most advantageous and safe options. In order to fully utilize the advantages of hadron therapy, there is a necessity of performing radiography with hadrons as well. In this paper we present the development of a proton computed tomography system. Our second-generation proton tomography system consists of two upstream and two downstream trackers ma…

Model-based iterative reconstruction (MBIR) techniques have demonstrated many advantages in X-ray CT image reconstruction. The MBIR approach is often modeled as a convex optimization problem including a data fitting function and a penalty function. The tuning parameter value that regulates the strength of the penalty function is critical for achieving good reconstruction results but difficult to choose. In this work, we describe two path seeking algorithms that are capable of efficiently generating a series of MBIR images with different strengths of the penalty function. The root-mean-squared-…
Overranging or overscanning increases the dose delivered to patients undergoing helical Computed Tomography examinations. In order to reduce it, nowadays most of the multidetector tomographs close the X-ray beam aperture at the scan extremes. This technical innovation, usually referred to as dynamic or adaptive collimation, also influences the overranging assessment methods. In particular, the film free approach proposed in previous studies is not suitable for these modern tomographs. The present study aims to introduce a new method of estimating overranging with real time dosimetry, even suit…

Generalizability is a concern when applying a deep learning (DL) model trained on one dataset to other datasets. Training a universal model that works anywhere, anytime, for anybody is unrealistic. In this work, we demonstrate the generalizability problem, then explore potential solutions based on transfer learning (TL) by using the cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) to computed tomography (CT) image conversion task as the testbed. Previous works have converted CBCT to CT-like images. However, all of those works studied only one or two anatomical sites and used images from the same vendor's …
Recently, an ultra-low-cost linear scan based tomography architecture was proposed by our team. Similar to linear tomosynthesis, the source and detector are translated in opposite directions and the data acquisition system targets on a region-of-interest (ROI) to acquire data for image reconstruction. This kind of tomography architecture was named parallel translational computed tomography (PTCT). In our previous studies, filtered backprojection (FBP)-type algorithms were developed to reconstruct images from PTCT. However, the reconstructed ROI images from truncated projections have severe tru…
Photoacoustic Computed Tomography (PACT) is a major configuration of photoacoustic imaging, a hybrid noninvasive modality for both functional and molecular imaging. PACT has rapidly gained importance in the field of biomedical imaging due to superior performance as compared to conventional optical imaging counterparts. However, the overall cost of developing a PACT system is one of the challenges towards clinical translation of this novel technique. The cost of a typical commercial PACT system originates from optical source, ultrasound detector, and data acquisition unit. With growing applicat…
Photoacoustic computed tomography (PACT), also known as optoacoustic tomography, is an emerging imaging modality that has great potential for a wide range of biomedical imaging applications. In this Note, we derive a hybrid reconstruction formula that is mathematically exact and operates on a data function that is expressed in the temporal frequency and spatial domains. This formula explicitly reveals new insights into how the spatial frequency components of the sought-after object function are determined by the temporal frequency components of the data function measured with a circular or sph…
Ultrasound Computed Tomography (USCT) has great potential for 3D quantitative imaging of acoustic breast tissue properties. Typical devices include high-frequency transducers, which makes tomography techniques based on numerical wave propagation simulations computationally challenging, especially in 3D. Therefore, despite the finite-frequency nature of ultrasonic waves, ray-theoretical approaches to transmission tomography are still widely used. This work introduces finite-frequency traveltime tomography to medical ultrasound. In addition to being computationally tractable for 3D imaging at hi…
X-ray Fluorescence Computed Tomography(XFCT) is a prevalent experimental technique which is utilized to investigate the spatial distribution of elements in sample. The sensitivity of L-shell XFCT of some elements is lower than that of K-shell XFCT. However, the image reconstruction for this technique has much more problems than that of transmission tomography, one of which is self-absorption. In the present work, a novel strategy was developed to deal with such problems. But few researches are concerned on attenuation correction of L-shell XFCT that are essential to get accurate reconstructed …
The classic imaging geometry for computed tomography is for collection of un-truncated projections and reconstruction of a global image, with the Fourier transform as the theoretical foundation that is intrinsically non-local. Recently, interior tomography research has led to theoretically exact relationships between localities in the projection and image spaces and practically promising reconstruction algorithms. Initially, interior tomography was developed for x-ray computed tomography. Then, it has been elevated as a general imaging principle. Finally, a novel framework known as omni-tomogr…
Limited-angle computed tomography (CT) image reconstruction is a challenging reconstruction problem in the fields of CT. With the development of deep learning, the generative adversarial network (GAN) perform well in image restoration by approximating the distribution of training sample data. In this paper, we proposed an effective GAN-based inpainting method to restore the missing sinogram data for limited-angle scanning. To estimate the missing data, we design the generator and discriminator of the patch-GAN and train the network to learn the data distribution of the sinogram. We obtain the …
Dual-energy computed tomography (CT) is to reconstruct images of an object from two projection datasets generated from two distinct x-ray source energy spectra. It can provide more accurate attenuation quantification than conventional CT with a single x-ray energy spectrum. In the diagnostic energy range, x-ray energy-dependent attenuation can be approximated as a linear combination of photoelectric absorption and Compton scattering. Hence, two physical components of x-ray attenuation can be determined from two spectral informative projection datasets to achieve monochromatic imaging and mater…
Proton computed tomography (pCT) is a novel medical imaging modality for mapping the distribution of proton relative stopping power (RSP) in medical objects of interest. Compared to conventional X-ray computed tomography, where range uncertainty margins are around 3.5%, pCT has the potential to provide more accurate measurements to within 1%. This improved efficiency will be beneficial to proton-therapy planning and pre-treatment verification. A prototype pCT imaging device has recently been developed capable of rapidly acquiring low-dose proton radiographs of head-sized objects. We have also …
As a main structural level in colloidal food materials, extended colloidal networks are important for texture and rheology. By obtaining the 3D microstructure of the network, macroscopic mechanical properties of the material can be inferred. However, this approach is hampered by the lack of suitable non-destructive 3D imaging techniques with submicron resolution. We present results of quantitative ptychographic X-ray computed tomography applied to a palm kernel oil based oil-in-water emulsion. The measurements were carried out at ambient pressure and temperature. The 3D structure of the extend…

The basic modules of our lung-CAD system, a dot-enhancement filter for nodule candidate selection and a neural classifier for false-positive finding reduction, are described. The system was designed and teste…
The cross section of X-ray phase contrast caused by these low-Z elements is greatly bigger than the absorption. Therefore, in the field of X-ray imaging, the phase shift information can offer better imaging contrast. In this paper, we present a data transmission system for the detectors of a phase contrast X-ray human computed tomography prototype. This system contains 3 data collecting boards (DCB) and one data transmitting board (DTB). A slip ring is used to transmit the data from the rotator side to the stator side over a nowadays commonly used multi-mode fiber (MMF). On the rotator side, 3…
X-ray fluorescence computed tomography based on sheet-beam can save a huge amount of time to obtain a whole set of projections using synchrotron. However, it is clearly unpractical for most biomedical research laboratories. In this paper, polychromatic X-ray fluorescence computed tomography with sheet-beam geometry is tested by Monte Carlo simulation. First, two phantoms (A and B) filled with PMMA are used to simulate imaging process through GEANT 4. Phantom A contains several GNP-loaded regions with the same size (10 mm) in height and diameter but different Au weight concentration ranging fro…
We present a photoacoustic computed tomography investigation on a healthy human finger, to image blood vessels with a focus on vascularity across the interphalangeal joints. The cross-sectional images were acquired using an imager specifically developed for this purpose. The images show rich detail of the digital blood vessels with diameters between 100 $μ$m and 1.5 mm in various orientations and at various depths. Different vascular layers in the skin including the subpapillary plexus could also be visualized. Acoustic reflections on the finger bone of photoacoustic signals from skin were vis…
An alternative approach to ultrasound computed tomography (USCT) for medical imaging is proposed, with the intent to (i) shorten acquisition time for devices with a large number of emitters, (ii) eliminate the calibration step, and (iii) suppress instrument noise. Inspired by seismic ambient field interferometry, the method rests on the active excitation of diffuse ultrasonic wavefields and the extraction of deterministic travel time information by inter-station correlation. To reduce stochastic errors and accelerate convergence, ensemble interferograms are obtained by phase-weighted stacking …
The improvement of computed tomography (CT) image resolution is beneficial to the subsequent medical diagnosis, but it is usually limited by the scanning devices and great expense. Convolutional neural network (CNN)-based methods have achieved promising ability in super-resolution. However, existing methods mainly focus on the super-resolution of reconstructed image and do not fully explored the approach of super-resolution from projection-domain. In this paper, we studied the characteristic of projection and proposed a CNN-based super-resolution method to establish the mapping relationship of…
Advanced ultrasound computed tomography techniques like full-waveform inversion are mathematically challenging and orders of magnitude more computationally expensive than conventional ultrasound imaging methods. This computational and algorithmic complexity, and a lack of open-source libraries in this field, represent a barrier preventing the generalised adoption of these techniques, slowing the pace of research and hindering reproducibility. Consequently, we have developed Stride, an open-source Python library for the solution of large-scale ultrasound tomography problems. On one hand, Stride…
The determination of relative stopping power (RSP) via proton computed tomography (pCT) of a patient is dependent in part on the knowledge of the incoming proton kinetic energies; the uncertainty in these energies is in turn determined by the proton source -- typically a cyclotron. Here we show that reducing the incident proton beam energy spread may significantly improve RSP determination in pCT. We demonstrate that the reduction of beam energy spread from the typical 1.0% (at 70MeV) down to 0.2%, can be achieved at the proton currents needed for imaging at the Paul Scherrer Institut 230MeV c…
Biological soft tissues encountered in clinical and pre-clinical imaging mainly consist of light element atoms, and their composition is nearly uniform with little density variation. Thus, x-ray attenuation imaging suffers from low image contrast resolution. By contrast, x-ray phase shift of soft tissues is about a thousand times greater than x-ray absorption over the diagnostic energy range, thereby a significantly higher sensitivity can be achieved in terms of phase shift. In this paper, we propose a novel Fourier transform based iterative method to perform x-ray tomographic imaging of the r…
Ultrasound computed tomography (USCT) holds great promise for improving the detection and management of breast cancer. Because they are based on the acoustic wave equation, waveform inversion-based reconstruction methods can produce images that possess improved spatial resolution properties over those produced by ray-based methods. However, waveform inversion methods are computationally demanding and have not been applied widely in USCT breast imaging. In this work, source encoding concepts are employed to develop an accelerated USCT reconstruction method that circumvents the large computation…
In this paper, the Primal-Dual UNet for sparse view CT reconstruction is modified to be applicable to cone beam projections and perform reconstructions of entire volumes instead of slices. Experiments show that the PSNR of the proposed method is increased by 10dB compared to the direct FDK reconstruction and almost 3dB compared to the modified original Primal-Dual Network when using only 23 projections. The presented network is not optimized wrt. memory consumption or hyperparameters but merely serves as a proof of concept and is limited to low resolution projections and volumes.
For conventional computed tomography (CT) image reconstruction tasks, the most popular method is the so-called filtered-back-projection (FBP) algorithm. In it, the acquired Radon projections are usually filtered first by a ramp kernel before back-projected to generate CT images. In this work, as a contrary, we realized the idea of image-domain backproject-filter (BPF) CT image reconstruction using the deep learning techniques for the first time. With a properly designed convolutional neural network (CNN), preliminary results demonstrate that it is feasible to reconstruct CT images with maintai…
A potential application for spectral computed tomography (CT) with multi-energy-window photon-counting detectors is quantitative medical imaging with K-edge contrast agents. Image reconstruction for spectral CT with such contrast agents necessitates expression of the X-ray linear attenuation map in at least three expansion functions, for example, bone/water/K-edge-material or photo-electric- process/Compton-process/K-edge-material. The use of three expansion functions can result in slow convergence for iterative image reconstruction (IIR) algorithms applied to spectral CT. We propose a block-d…
X-Ray Phase-Contrast Imaging (PCI) yields absorption, differential phase, and dark-field images. Computed Tomography (CT) of grating-based PCI can in principle provide high-resolution soft-tissue contrast. Recently, grating-based PCI took several hurdles towards clinical implementation by addressing, for example, acquisition speed, high X-ray energies, and system vibrations. However, a critical impediment in all grating-based systems lies in limits that constrain the grating diameter to few centimeters. In this work, we propose a system and a reconstruction algorithm to circumvent this constra…

Since 2016, deep learning (DL) has advanced tomographic imaging with remarkable successes, especially in low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) imaging. Despite being driven by big data, the LDCT denoising and pure end-to-end reconstruction networks often suffer from the black box nature and major issues such as instabilities, which is a major barrier to apply deep learning methods in low-dose CT applications. An emerging trend is to integrate imaging physics and model into deep networks, enabling a hybridization of physics/model-based and data-driven elements. %This type of hybrid methods has be…
Particle therapy is an established method to treat deep-seated tumours using accelerator-produced ion beams. For treatment planning, the precise knowledge of the relative stopping power (RSP) within the patient is vital. Conversion errors from x-ray computed tomography (CT) measurements to RSP introduce uncertainties in the applied dose distribution. Using a proton computed tomography (pCT) system to measure the SP directly could potentially increase the accuracy of treatment planning. A pCT demonstrator, consisting of double-sided silicon strip detectors (DSSD) as tracker and plastic scintill…
The development of energy selective, photon counting X-ray detectors allows for a wide range of new possibilities in the area of computed tomographic image formation. Under the assumption of perfect energy resolution, here we propose a tensor-based iterative algorithm that simultaneously reconstructs the X-ray attenuation distribution for each energy. We use a multi-linear image model rather than a more standard "stacked vector" representation in order to develop novel tensor-based regularizers. Specifically, we model the multi-spectral unknown as a 3-way tensor where the first two dimensions …
Recent years have seen growing interest in exploiting dual- and multi-energy measurements in computed tomography (CT) in order to characterize material properties as well as object shape. Material characterization is performed by decomposing the scene into constitutive basis functions, such as Compton scatter and photoelectric absorption functions. While well motivated physically, the joint recovery of the spatial distribution of photoelectric and Compton properties is severely complicated by the fact that the data are several orders of magnitude more sensitive to Compton scatter coefficients …
