This contribution presents a comprehensive overview of of lattice Boltzmann models for non-ideal fluids, covering both theoretical concepts at both kinetic and macroscopic levels and more practical discussion of numerical nature. In that context, elements of kinetic theory of ideal gases are presented and discussed at length. Then a detailed discussion of the lattice Boltzmann method for ideal gases from discretization to Galilean invariance issues and different collision models along with their effect on stability and consistency at the hydrodynamic level is presented. Extension to non-ideal fluids is then introduced in the context of the kinetic theory of gases along with the corresponding thermodynamics at the macroscopic level, i.e. the van der Waals fluid, followed by an overview of different lattice Boltzmann based models for non-ideal fluids. After an in-depth discussion of different well-known issues and artifacts and corresponding solutions, the article finishes with a brief discussion on most recent applications of such models and extensions proposed in the literature towards non-isothermal and multi-component flows.
Cross Correlators and Galilean Invariance in Fluctuating Ideal Gas Lattice Boltzmann Simulations
我们分析了Adhikari格子玻尔兹曼方法[Europhys. Lett.
The effects of volume exclusion and long-range intermolecular attraction are investigated by the simplified kinetic model for surface-confined inhomogeneous fluids. Gas dynamics of the ideal gas, the hard-sphere fluid and the real gas are simulated by the Boltzmann equation, the Enskog equation and the simple kinetic equation, respectively. Only the Knudsen minimum appears for the ideal gas, while both the Knudsen minimum and the Knudsen maximum occur for the hard-sphere fluid and the real gas under certain confinements, beyond which the maximum and minimum may disappear. The Boltzmann equatio…
The one-dimensional nonlinear equations for the blood flow motion in distensible vessels are considered using the kinetic approach. It is shown that the Lattice Boltzmann (LB) model for non-ideal gas is asymptotically equivalent to the blood flow equations for compliant vessels at the limit of low Knudsen numbers. The equations of state for non-ideal gas are transformed to the pressure-luminal area response. This property allows to model arbitrary pressure-luminal area relations. Several test problems are considered: the propagation of a sole nonlinear wave in an elastic vessel, the propagatio…
We propose a kinetic framework for single-component non-ideal isothermal flows. Starting from a kinetic model for a non-ideal fluid, we show that under conventional scaling the Navier-Stokes equations with a non-ideal equation of state are recovered in the hydrodynamic limit. A scaling based on the smallness of velocity increments is then introduced, which recovers the full Navier-Stokes-Korteweg equations. The proposed model is realized on a standard lattice and validated on a variety of benchmarks. Through a detailed study of thermodynamic properties including co-existence densities, surface…
We study the diffusivity of a small particle immersed in a square box filled with a non-ideal multicomponent fluid in the presence of thermal fluctuations. Our approach is based on the numerical integration of fluctuating lattice Boltzmann models (LBM) for multicomponent mixtures. At changing the wettability on the particle's surface, we measure the mean square displacement (MSD) and compare with the prediction of the Stokes-Einstein theory. Two main set-ups are tested, involving periodic boundary conditions and wall boundary conditions realized on the computational box. We find that full peri…
Present work attempts to identify the roles of flow- and geometric-variables on the scaling factor which is a necessary parameter for modeling the apparent viscosity of non-Newtonian fluid in porous media. While idealizing the porous media microstructure as arrays of circular and square cylinders, present study uses multi-relaxation time lattice Boltzmann method to conduct pore-scale simulation of shear thinning non-Newtonian fluid flow. Variation in the size and inclusion ratio of the solid cylinders generates wide range of porous media with varying porosity and permeability. Present study al…
A new lattice Boltzmann model for reactive ideal gas mixtures is presented. The model is an extension to reactive flows of the recently proposed multi-component lattice Boltzmann model for compressible ideal gas mixtures with Stefan-Maxwell diffusion for species interaction. First, the kinetic model for the Stefan--Maxwell diffusion is enhanced to accommodate a source term accounting the change of the mixture composition due to chemical reaction. Second, by including the heat of formation in the energy equation, the thermodynamic consistency of the underlying compressible lattice Boltzmann mod…
We present a systematic procedure for the construction of relativistic lattice Boltzmann models (R-SLB) appropriate for the simulation of flows of massless particles. Quadrature rules are used for the discretization of the momentum space in spherical coordinates. The models are optimized for one-dimensional flows. The applications considered in this paper are the Sod shock tube and the one-dimensional boost invariant expansion (Bjorken flow). Our models are tested against exact solutions in the inviscid and ballistic limits. At intermediate relaxation times (finite viscosity), we compare with …
Most biological fluids are viscoelastic, meaning that they have elastic properties in addition to the dissipative properties found in Newtonian fluids. Computational models can help us understand viscoelastic flow, but are often limited in how they deal with complex flow geometries and suspended particles. Here, we present a lattice Boltzmann solver for Oldroyd-B fluids that can handle arbitrarily-shaped fixed and moving boundary conditions, which makes it ideally suited for the simulation of confined colloidal suspensions. We validate our method using several standard rheological setups, and …
A new lattice Boltzmann model for multicomponent ideal gas mixtures is presented. The model development consists of two parts. First, a new kinetic model for Stefan- Maxwell diffusion amongst the species is proposed and realized as a lattice Boltzmann equation on the standard discrete velocity set. Second, a compressible lattice Boltzmann model for the momentum and energy of the mixture is established. Both parts are consistently coupled through mixture composition, momentum, pressure, energy and enthalpy whereby a passive scalar advection-diffusion coupling is obviated, unlike in previous app…
In this work, we consider a general consistent and conservative phase-field model for the incompressible two-phase flows. In this model, not only the Cahn-Hilliard or Allen-Cahn equation can be adopted, but also the mass and the momentum fluxes in the Navier-Stokes equations are reformulated such that the consistency of reduction, consistency of mass and momentum transport, and the consistency of mass conservation are satisfied. We further develop a lattice Boltzmann (LB) method and show that through the direct Taylor expansion, the present LB method can correctly recover the consistent and co…

The Boltzmann equation becomes invalid as the size of gas molecules is comparable with the average intermolecular distance. A better description is provided by the Enskog collision operator, which takes into account the finite size of gas molecules. This extension implies non-local collisions as well as an increase in collision frequency, making it computationally expensive to solve. An approximation of the Enskog collision operator, denoted the simplified Enskog collision operator, is used in this work to develop a quadrature-based Lattice Boltzmann model for non-ideal monatomic dense gases. …
A D2Q9 Hybrid Lattice Boltzmann Method (HLBM) is proposed for the simulation of both compressible subsonic and supersonic flows. This HLBM is an extension of the model of Feng et al: [12], which has been found, via different test cases, to be unstable for supersonic regimes. The improvements consist of: (1) a new discretization of the lattice closure correction term making possible to properly simulate supersonic flows, (2) a corrected viscous stress tensor that takes into account polyatomic gases, and (3) a novel discretization of the viscous heat production term fitting with the regularized …
The lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) is routinely employed in the simulation of complex multiphase flows comprising bulk phases separated by non-ideal interfaces. LBM is intrinsically mesoscale with an hydro-dynamic equivalence popularly set by the Chapman-Enskog analysis, requiring that fields slowly vary in space and time. The latter assumptions become questionable close to interfaces, where the method is also known to be affected by spurious non hydrodynamical contributions. This calls for quantitative hydrodynamical checks. In this paper we analyze the hydrodynamic behaviour of LBM pseudo-po…
The accuracy of the free-surface lattice Boltzmann method (FSLBM) depends significantly on the boundary condition employed at the free interface. Ideally, the chosen boundary condition balances the forces exerted by the liquid and gas pressure. Different variants of the same boundary condition are possible, depending on the number and choice of the particle distribution functions (PDFs) to which it is applied. This study analyzes and compares four variants, in which (i) the boundary condition is applied to all PDFs oriented in the opposite direction of the free interface's normal vector, inclu…
Interfacial roughening denotes the nonequilibrium process by which an initially flat interface reaches its equilibrium state, characterized by the presence of thermally excited capillary waves. Roughening of fluid interfaces has been first analyzed by Flekkoy and Rothman [Phys. Rev. Lett. 75, 260 (1995)], where the dynamic scaling exponents in the weakly damped case in two dimensions were found to agree with the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class. We extend this work by taking into account also the strong-damping regime and perform extensive fluctuating hydrodynamics simulations in two dim…
An original spectral study of the compressible hybrid lattice Boltzmann method (HLBM) on standard lattice is proposed. In this framework, the mass and momentum equations are addressed using the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM), while finite difference (FD) schemes solve an energy equation. Both systems are coupled with each other thanks to an ideal gas equation of state. This work aims at answering some questions regarding the numerical stability of such models, which strongly depends on the choice of numerical parameters. To this extent, several one- and two-dimensional HLBM classes based on di…
A new lattice Boltzmann model (LBM) for chemically reactive mixtures is presented. The approach capitalizes on the recently introduced thermodynamically consistent LBM for multicomponent mixtures of ideal gases. Similar to the non-reactive case, the present LBM features Stefan--Maxwell diffusion of chemical species and a fully on-lattice mean-field realization of the momentum and energy of the flow. Besides introducing the reaction mechanism into the kinetic equations for the species, the proposed LBM also features a new realization of the compressible flow by using a concept of extended equil…
