We prove that linear extensions of the Bruhat order of a matroid are shelling orders and that the barycentric subdivision of a matroid is a Coxeter matroid, viewing barycentric subdivisions as subsets of a parabolic quotient of a symmetric group. A similar result holds for order ideals in minuscule quotients of symmetric groups and in their barycentric subdivisions. Moreover, we apply promotion and evacuation for labeled graphs of Malvenuto and Reutenauer to dual graphs of simplicial complexes, providing promotion and evacuation of shelling orders.
Monotone triangles are a rich extension of permutations that biject with alternating sign matrices. The notions of weak order and descent sets for permutations are generalized here to monotone triangles, and shown to enjoy many analogous properties. It is shown that any linear extension of the weak order gives rise to a shelling order on a poset, recently introduced by Terwilliger, whose maximal chains biject with monotone triangles; among these shellings are a family of EL-shellings. The weak order turns out to encode an action of the 0-Hecke monoid of type A on the monotone triangles, genera…
From the topological viewpoint, Morse shellings of finite simplicial complexes are {\it pinched} handle decompositions and extend the classical shellings. We prove that every discrete Morse function on a finite simplicial complex induces Morse shellings on its second barycentric subdivision whose critical tiles-or pinched handles-are in oneto-one correspondence with the critical faces of the function, preserving the index. The same holds true, given any smooth Morse function on a closed manifold, for any piecewise-linear triangulation on it after sufficiently many barycentric subdivisions.
Imposing a strong condition on the linear order of shellable complexes, we introduce strong shellability. Basic properties, including the existence of dimension-decreasing strong shelling orders, are developed with respect to nonpure strongly shellable complexes. Meanwhile, pure strongly shellable complexes can be characterized by the corresponding codimension one graphs. In addition, we show that the facet ideals of pure strongly shellable complexes have linear quotients.
Inspired by Yakoubov's 2015 investigation of pattern avoiding linear extensions of the posets called combs, we study pattern avoiding linear extensions of rectangular posets. These linear extensions are closely related to standard tableaux. For positive integers $s$ and $t$ we consider two natural rectangular partial orders on $\{1,2,\ldots,s t\}$, which we call the NE rectangular order and the EN rectangular order. First we enumerate linear extensions of both rectangular orders avoiding most sets of patterns of length three. Then we use both a generating tree and a bijection to show that the …
The classical 1991 result by Brightwell and Winkler states that the number of linear extensions of a poset is #P-complete. We extend this result to posets with certain restrictions. First, we prove that the number of linear extension for posets of height two is #P-complete. Furthermore, we prove that this holds for incidence posets of graphs. Finally, we prove that the number of linear extensions for posets of dimension two is #P-complete.
In this article, we give a counter-example to Lemma 12 of the article "On Operations and Linear Extensions of Well Partially Ordered Sets" by Maciej Malicki and Aleksander Rutkowski.
In this note we consider a Ramsey type result for partially ordered sets. In particular, we give an alternative short proof of a theorem for a posets with multiple linear extensions recently obtained by Solecki and Zhao.
Linear extensions of posets are important objects in enumerative and algebraic combinatorics that are difficult to count in general. Families of posets like Young diagrams of straight shapes and $d$-complete posets have hook-length product formulas to count linear extensions, whereas families like Young diagrams of skew shapes have determinant or positive sum formulas like the Naruse hook-length formula from 2014. In 2020, Garver et. al. gave determinant formulas to count linear extensions of a family of posets called mobile posets that refine $d$-complete posets and border strip skew shapes. …
We study the number of linear extensions of a partial order with a given proportion of comparable pairs of elements, and estimate the maximum and minimum possible numbers. We also consider a random interval partial order on $n$ elements, which has close to a third of the pairs comparable with high probability: we show that the number of linear extensions is $n! \, 2^{-Θ(n)}$ with high probability.
We study the linear extension complexity of stable set polytopes of perfect graphs. We make use of known structural results permitting to decompose perfect graphs into basic perfect graphs by means of two graph operations: 2-join and skew partitions. Exploiting the link between extension complexity and the nonnegative rank of an associated slack matrix, we investigate the behaviour of the extension complexity under these graph operations. We show bounds for the extension complexity of the stable set polytope of a perfect graph $G$ depending linearly on the size of $G$ and involving the depth o…
We give a new proof of the Cauchy-Davenport Theorem for linear maps given by Herdade et al., (2015). This theorem gives a lower bound on the size of the image of a linear map on a grid. Our proof is purely combinatorial and offers a partial insight into the range of parameters not handled previously.
We introduce a class of posets, which includes both ribbon posets (skew shapes) and $d$-complete posets, such that their number of linear extensions is given by a determinant of a matrix whose entries are products of hook lengths. We also give $q$-analogues of this determinantal formula in terms of the major index and inversion statistics. As applications, we give families of tree posets whose numbers of linear extensions are given by generalizations of Euler numbers, we draw relations to Naruse-Okada's positive formulas for the number of linear extensions of skew $d$-complete posets, and we g…
Let $(\mathcal{P},\leqslant)$ be a finite poset. Define the numbers $a_1,a_2,\ldots$ (respectively, $c_1,c_2,\ldots$) so that $a_1+\ldots+a_k$ (respectively, $c_1+\ldots+c_k$) is the maximal number of elements of $\mathcal{P}$ which may be covered by $k$ antichains (respectively, $k$ chains.) Then the number $e(\mathcal{P})$ of linear extensions of poset $\mathcal{P}$ is not less than $\prod a_i!$ and not more than $n!/\prod c_i!$. A corollary: if $\mathcal{P}$ is partitioned onto disjoint antichains of size $b_1,b_2, \ldots$, then $e(\mathcal{P})\geqslant \prod b_i!$.
Extensions of the linear bound in the Furedi-Hajnal conjecture
The main aim of the paper is to present a~combinatorial algorithm that, applying Littlewood-Richardson tableaux with entries equal to $1$, computes generic extensions of semisimple invariant subspaces of nilpotent linear operators. Moreover, we discuss geometric properties of generic extensions and their connections with combinatorics.
We develop an algorithm for efficiently computing recursively defined functions on posets. We illustrate this algorithm by disproving conjectures about the game Subset Takeaway (Chomp on a hypercube) and computing the number of linear extensions of the lattice of a 7-cube and related lattices.
We address the following natural but hitherto unstudied question: what are the possible linear extension numbers of an $n$-element poset? Let $\mathbf{LE}(n)$ denote the set of all positive integers that arise as the number of linear extensions of some $n$-element poset. We show that $\mathbf{LE}(n)$ skews towards the "small" end of the interval $[1,n!]$. More specifically, $\mathbf{LE}(n)$ contains all of the positive integers up to $\exp\left(c\frac{n}{\log n}\right)$ for some absolute constant $c$, and $|\mathbf{LE}(n) \cap ((n-1)!,n!]|<(n-3)!$. The proof of the former statement involves so…

The Tsetlin library is a very well studied model for the way an arrangement of books on a library shelf evolves over time. One of the most interesting properties of this Markov chain is that its spectrum can be computed exactly and that the eigenvalues are linear in the transition probabilities. This result has been generalized in different ways by various people. In this work we investigate one of the generalizations given by the extended promotion Markov Chain on linear extensions of a poset $P$ introduced by Ayyer, Klee, and Schilling in 2014. They showed that if the poset $P$ is a rooted f…
In this paper we consider the classical problem of computing linear extensions of a given poset which is well known to be a difficult problem. However, in our setting the elements of the poset are multivariate polynomials, and only a small "admissible" subset of these linear extensions, determined implicitly by the evaluation map, are of interest. This seemingly novel problem arises in the study of global dynamics of gene regulatory networks in which case the poset is a Boolean lattice. We provide an algorithm for solving this problem using linear programming for arbitrary partial orders of li…
We relate the maximum semidefinite and linear extension complexity of a family of polytopes to the cardinality of this family and the minimum pairwise Hausdorff distance of its members. This result directly implies a known lower bound on the maximum semidefinite extension complexity of 0/1-polytopes. We further show how our result can be used to improve on the corresponding bounds known for polygons with integer vertices. Our geometric proof builds upon nothing else than a simple well-known property of maximum volume inscribed ellipsoids of convex bodies. In particular, it does not rely on fac…
We are interested in characterising pairs $S,T$ of $F$-linear subspaces in a field extension $L/F$ such that the linear span $ST$ of the set of products of elements of $S$ and of elements of $T$ has small dimension. Our central result is a linear analogue of Vosper's Theorem, which gives the structure of vector spaces $S, T$ in a prime extension $L$ of a finite field $F$ for which $\dim_FST =\dim_F S+\dim_F T-1,$ when $\dim_F S, \dim_F T\ge 2$ and $\dim_F ST\le [L:F]-2$.
