We present two extensions of the linear bound, due to Marcus and Tardos, on the number of 1's in an n by n 0-1 matrix avoiding a fixed permutation matrix. We first extend the linear bound to hypergraphs with ordered vertex sets and, using previous results of Klazar, we prove an exponential bound on the number of hypergraphs on n vertices which avoid a fixed permutation. This, in turn, solves various conjectures of Klazar as well as a conjecture of Branden and Mansour. We then extend the original Furedi-Hajnal problem from ordinary matrices to d-dimensional matrices and show that the number of 1's in a d-dimensional 0-1 matrix with side length n which avoids a d-dimensional permutation matrix is O(n^{d-1}).
A binary matrix is a matrix with entries from the set $\{0,1\}$. We say that a binary matrix $A$ contains a binary matrix $S$ if $S$ can be obtained from $A$ by removal of some rows, some columns, and changing some $1$-entries to $0$-entries. If $A$ does not contain $S$, we say that $A$ avoids $S$. A $k$-permutation matrix $P$ is a binary $k \times k$ matrix with exactly one $1$-entry in every row and one $1$-entry in every column. The Füredi-Hajnal conjecture, proved by Marcus and Tardos, states that for every permutation matrix $P$, there is a constant $c_P$ such that for every $n \in \mathb…
The Erdös-Hajnal conjecture states that for every graph $H$, there exists a constant $δ(H) > 0$ such that every graph $G$ with no induced subgraph isomorphic to $H$ has either a clique or a stable set of size at least $|V(G)|^{δ(H)}$. This paper is a survey of some of the known results on this conjecture.
The Lagrangian of a hypergraph has been a useful tool in hypergraph extremal problems. In most applications, we need an upper bound for the Lagrangian of a hypergraph. Frankl and Furedi in \cite{FF} conjectured that the $r$-graph with $m$ edges formed by taking the first $m$ sets in the colex ordering of ${\mathbb N}^{(r)}$ has the largest Lagrangian of all $r$-graphs with $m$ edges. In this paper, we give some partial results for this conjecture.
We give a new bound on the probability that the random sum $ξ_1 v_1 +...+ ξ_n v_n$ belongs to a ball of fixed radius, where the $ξ_i$ are iid Bernoulli random variables and the $v_i$ are vectors in $\R^d$. As an application, we prove a conjecture of Frankl and Füredi (raised in 1988), which can be seen as the high dimensional version of the classical Littlewood-Offord-Erd\H os theorem.
We prove that for every graph $H$, there exists $\varepsilon>0$ such that every $n$-vertex graph with no vertex-minors isomorphic to $H$ has a pair of disjoint sets $A$, $B$ of vertices such that $|A|, |B|\ge \varepsilon n$ and $A$ is complete or anticomplete to $B$. We deduce this from recent work of Chudnovsky, Scott, Seymour, and Spirkl (2018). This proves the analog of the Erdős-Hajnal conjecture for vertex-minors.
The celebrated Erdös-Hajnal conjecture states that for every undirected graph $H$ there exists $ ε(H) > 0 $ such that every undirected graph on $ n $ vertices that does not contain $H$ as an induced subgraph contains a clique or a stable set of size at least $ n^{ε(H)} $. This conjecture has a directed equivalent version stating that for every tournament $H$ there exists $ ε(H) > 0 $ such that every $H$-free $n$-vertex tournament $T$ contains a transitive subtournament of order at least $ n^{ε(H)} $. This conjecture is proved for few infinite families of tournaments. In this paper we construct…
A celebrated unresolved conjecture of Erdős and Hajnal states that for every undirected graph $H$ there exists $ε(H)>0$ such that every undirected graph on $n$ vertices that does not contain $H$ as an induced subgraph contains a clique or stable set of size at least $n^{ε(H)}$. The conjecture has a directed equivalent version stating that for every tournament $H$ there exists $ε(H)>0$ such that every $H$-free $n$-vertex tournament $T$ contains a transitive subtournament of order at least $n^{ε(H)}$. We say that a tournament is \textit{prime} if it does not have nontrivial homogeneous sets. So …
Erdös-Hajnal conjecture states that for every undirected graph $H$ there exists $ ε(H) > 0 $ such that every undirected graph on $ n $ vertices that does not contain $H$ as an induced subgraph contains a clique or a stable set of size at least $ n^{ε(H)} $. This conjecture has a directed equivalent version stating that for every tournament $H$ there exists $ ε(H) > 0 $ such that every $H-$free $n-$vertex tournament $T$ contains a transitive subtournament of order at least $ n^{ε(H)} $. This conjecture is known to hold for a few infinite families of tournaments. In this paper we construct two n…
The celebrated Hajnal-Szemerédi theorem gives the precise minimum degree threshold that forces a graph to contain a perfect K_k-packing. Fischer's conjecture states that the analogous result holds for all multipartite graphs except for those formed by a single construction. Recently, we deduced an approximate version of this conjecture from new results on perfect matchings in hypergraphs. In this paper, we apply a stability analysis to the extremal cases of this argument, thus showing that the exact conjecture holds for any sufficiently large graph.
A celebrated unresolved conjecture of Erdös and Hajnal states that for every undirected graph $H$ there exists $ ε(H) > 0 $ such that every undirected graph on $ n $ vertices that does not contain $H$ as an induced subgraph contains a clique or a stable set of size at least $ n^{ε(H)} $. The conjecture has a directed equivalent version stating that for every tournament $H$ there exists $ ε(H) > 0 $ such that every $H-$free $n-$vertex tournament $T$ contains a transitive subtournament of order at least $ n^{ε(H)} $. Both the directed and the undirected versions of the conjecture are known to be…
We consider the problem of bounding the number of permutations $σ\in S_n$ that avoid a fixed permutation $π\in S_k$ in specific indices given by a $k$-uniform hypergraph $Λ$. We obtain relatively sharp bounds in the case where $Λ$ is a random hypergraph, and find bounds in the case where $Λ$ contains many large cliques. Along the way, we prove a supersaturation version of Füredi-Hajnal, which may be of independent interest.
Hajnal and Szemeredi proved that every graph G with |G|=ks and minimum degree at least k(s-1) contains k vertex disjoint s-cliques; moreover this degree bound is optimal. We extend their theorem to directed graphs by showing that every directed graph D with |D|=ks and minimum (total) degree at least 2k(s-1)-1 contains k vertex disjoint transitive tournaments on s vertices. Our result implies the Hajnal-Szemeredi Theorem, and the degree bound is optimal. We also make some conjectures regarding even more general results for multigraphs and partitioning into other tournaments. One of these conjec…
We prove that every 3-coloring of the edges of the complete graph on n vertices without a rainbow triangle contains a set of order Omega(n^{1/3}log^2 n) which uses at most two colors, and this bound is tight up to a constant factor. This verifies a conjecture of Hajnal which is a case of the multicolor generalization of the well-known Erdős-Hajnal conjecture. We further establish a generalization of this result. For fixed positive integers s and r with s at most r, we determine a constant c_{r,s} such that the following holds. Every r-coloring of the edges of the complete graph on n vertices w…
A conjecture of Alon, Pach and Solymosi, which is equivalent to the celebrated Erdős-Hajnal Conjecture, states that for every tournament $S$ there exists $ε(S)>0$ such that if $T$ is an $n$-vertex tournament that does not contains $S$ as a subtournament, then $T$ contains a transitive subtournament on at least $n^{ε(S)}$ vertices. Let $C_5$ be the unique five-vertex tournament where every vertex has two inneighbors and two outneighbors. The Alon-Pach-Solymosi conjecture is known to be true for the case when $S=C_5$. Here we prove a strengthening of this result, showing that in every tournament…
Erdős and Szekeres's quantitative version of Ramsey's theorem asserts that any complete graph on n vertices that is edge-colored with two colors has a monochromatic clique on at least 1/2log(n) vertices. The famous Erdős-Hajnal conjecture asserts that forbidding fixed color patterns ensures larger monochromatic cliques. Specifically, it claims that for any fixed integer k and any clique K on k vertices edge-colored with two colors, there is a positive constant a such that in any complete n-vertex graph edge-colored with two colors that does not contain a copy of K, there is a monochromatic cli…
The Erdős-Hajnal Conjecture states that for every $H$ there exists a constant $ε(H)>0$ such that every graph $G$ that does not contain $H$ as an induced subgraph contains a clique or a stable set of size at least $|V(G)|^{ε(H)}$. The Conjecture is still open. Some time ago its directed version was formulated (see:\cite{alon}). In the directed version graphs are replaced by tournaments, and cliques and stable sets by transitive subtournaments. If the Conjecture is not true then the smallest counterexample is a prime tournament. For a long time the Conjecture was known only for finitely many pri…
This conjecture has a directed equivalent version stating that for every tournament $H$ there exists $ ε(H) > 0 $ such that every $H-$free $n-$vertex tournament $T$ contains a transitive subtournament of size at least $ n^{ε(H)} $. Recently the conjecture was proved for all six-vertex tournaments, except $K_{6…
The Vapnik-Chervonenkis dimension (in short, VC-dimension) of a graph is defined as the VC-dimension of the set system induced by the neighborhoods of its vertices. We show that every $n$-vertex graph with bounded VC-dimension contains a clique or an independent set of size at least $e^{(\log n)^{1 - o(1)}}$. The dependence on the VC-dimension is hidden in the $o(1)$ term. This improves the general lower bound, $e^{c\sqrt{\log n}}$, due to Erdos and Hajnal, which is valid in the class of graphs satisfying any fixed nontrivial hereditary property. Our result is almost optimal and nearly matches…
We prove that for every integer $k$, there exists $\varepsilon > 0$ such that for every n-vertex graph $G$ with no pivot-minor isomorphic to $C_k$, there exist disjoint sets $A,B \subseteq V(G)$ such that $|A|,|B| \geq \varepsilon n$, and $A$ is either complete or anticomplete to $B$. This proves the analog of the Erdős-Hajnal conjecture for the class of graphs with no pivot-minor isomorphic to $C_k$.
We prove that for every k, there exists $c_k>0$ such that every graph G on n vertices not inducing a path $P_k$ and its complement contains a clique or a stable set of size $n^{c_k}$.
We say that a (di)graph $G$ has a perfect $H$-packing if there exists a set of vertex-disjoint copies of $H$ which cover all the vertices in $G$. The seminal Hajnal--Szemerédi theorem characterises the minimum degree that ensures a graph $G$ contains a perfect $K_r$-packing. In this paper we prove the following analogue for directed graphs: Suppose that $T$ is a tournament on $r$ vertices and $G$ is a digraph of sufficiently large order $n$ where $r$ divides $n$. If $G$ has minimum in- and outdegree at least $ (1-1/r)n$ then $G$ contains a perfect $T$-packing. In the case when $T$ is a cyclic …
Erdős and Hajnal conjectured that, for every graph $H$, there exists a constant $c_H$ such that every graph $G$ on $n$ vertices which does not contain any induced copy of $H$ has a clique or a stable set of size $n^{c_H}$. We prove that for every $k$, there exists $c_k>0$ such that every graph $G$ on $n$ vertices not inducing a cycle of length at least $k$ nor its complement contains a clique or a stable set of size $n^{c_k}$.
We show that there is an absolute constant $c>0$ such that the following holds. For every $n > 1$, there is a 5-uniform hypergraph on at least $2^{2^{cn^{1/4}}}$ vertices with independence number at most $n$, where every set of 6 vertices induces at most 3 edges. The double exponential growth rate for the number of vertices is sharp. By applying a stepping-up lemma established by the first two authors, analogous sharp results are proved for $k$-uniform hypergraphs. This answers the penultimate open case of a conjecture in Ramsey theory posed by Erdős and Hajnal in 1972.
The celebrated Erdős-Hajnal conjecture states that for every proper hereditary graph class $\mathcal{G}$ there exists a constant $\varepsilon = \varepsilon(\mathcal{G}) > 0$ such that every graph $G \in \mathcal{G}$ contains a clique or an independent set of size $|V(G)|^\varepsilon$. Recently, there has been a growing interest in the symmetrized variant of this conjecture, where one additionally requires $\mathcal{G}$ to be closed under complementation. We show that any hereditary graph class that is closed under complementation and excludes a fixed caterpillar as an induced subgraph satisfie…
We prove that there exists $C>0$ such that $ε(H) \geq \frac{C}{|H|^{5}\log(|H|)}$, where $ε(H)$ is the Erdős-Hajnal coefficient of the tournament $H$, for every prime tournament $H$ for which the celebrated Erdős-Hajnal Conjecture has been proven so far. This is the first polynomial bound on the EH coefficient obtained for all known prime Erdős-Hajnal tournaments, in particular for infinitely many prime tournaments. As a byproduct of our analysis, we answer affirmatively the question whether there exists an infinite family of prime tournaments $H$ with $ε(H)$ lower-bounded by $\frac{1}{\textit…
In 1981, Erdős and Hajnal asked whether the sum of the reciprocals of the odd cycle lengths in a graph with infinite chromatic number is necessarily infinite. Let $\mathcal{C}(G)$ be the set of cycle lengths in a graph $G$ and let $\mathcal{C}_\text{odd}(G)$ be the set of odd numbers in $\mathcal{C}(G)$. We prove that, if $G$ has chromatic number $k$, then $\sum_{\ell\in \mathcal{C}_\text{odd}(G)}1/\ell\geq (1/2-o_k(1))\log k$. This solves Erdős and Hajnal's odd cycle problem, and, furthermore, this bound is asymptotically optimal. In 1984, Erdős asked whether there is some $d$ such that each …
Given integers $\ell,n$, the $\ell$th power of the path $P_n$ is the ordered graph $P_n^{\ell}$ with vertex set $v_1<v_2<\cdots < v_n$, and all edges of the form $v_iv_j$ where $|i-j|\le \ell$. The ramsey number $r(P_n^{\ell}, P_n^{\ell})$ is the minimum $N$ such that every 2-coloring of ${[N] \choose 2}$ results in a monochromatic copy of $P_n^{\ell}$. It is well-known that $r(P_n^1, P_n^1)=(n-1)^2+1$. For $\ell>1$, Balko-Cibulka-Král-Kynčl proved that $r(P_n^{\ell}, P_n^{\ell})< c_{\ell}n^{128 \ell}$ and asked for the growth rate for fixed $\ell$. When $\ell=2$, we improve this upper bound b…
The Erdos-Hajnal conjecture states that if a graph on n vertices is H-free, that is, it does not contain an induced copy of a given graph H, then it must contain either a clique or an independent set of size n^{d(H)}, where d(H) > 0 depends only on the graph H. Except for a few special cases, this conjecture remains wide open. However, it is known that a H-free graph must contain a complete or empty bipartite graph with parts of polynomial size. We prove an analogue of this result for 3-uniform hypergraphs, showing that if a 3-uniform hypergraph on n vertices is H-free, for any given H, then i…
There is a remarkable connection between the clique number and the Lagrangian of a 2-graph proved by Motzkin and Straus in 1965. It is useful in practice if similar results hold for hypergraphs. However the obvious generalization of Motzkin and Straus' result to hypergraphs is false. Frankl and Füredi conjectured that the $r$-uniform hypergraph with $m$ edges formed by taking the first $m$ sets in the colex ordering of ${\mathbb N}^{(r)}$ has the largest Lagrangian of all $r$-uniform hypergraphs with $m$ edges. For $r=2$, Motzkin and Straus' theorem confirms this conjecture. For $r=3$, it is s…
In this paper we confirm a conjecture of Füredi, Jiang, and Seiver, and determine an exact formula for the Turán number $ex_3(n; P_3^3)$ of the 3-uniform linear path $P^3_3$ of length 3, valid for all $n$. It coincides with the analogous formula for the 3-uniform triangle $C^3_3$, obtained earlier by Frankl and Füredi for $n\ge 75$ and Csákány and Kahn for all $n$. In view of this coincidence, we also determine a `conditional' Turán number, defined as the maximum number of edges in a $P^3_3$-free 3-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices which is \emph{not} $C^3_3$-free.
The following natural problem was raised independently by Erdős-Hajnal and Linial-Rabinovich in the late 80's. How large must the independence number $α(G)$ of a graph $G$ be whose every $m$ vertices contain an independent set of size $r$? In this paper we discuss new methods to attack this problem. The first new approach, based on bounding Ramsey numbers of certain graphs, allows us to improve previously best lower bounds due to Linial-Rabinovich, Erdős-Hajnal and Alon-Sudakov. As an example, we prove that any $n$-vertex graph $G$ having an independent set of size $3$ among every $7$ vertices…
A conjecture of Erdős from 1967 asserts that any graph on $n$ vertices which does not contain a fixed $r$-degenerate bipartite graph $F$ has at most $Cn^{2-1/r}$ edges, where $C$ is a constant depending only on $F$. We show that this bound holds for a large family of $r$-degenerate bipartite graphs, including all $r$-degenerate blow-ups of trees. Our results generalise many previously proven cases of the Erdős conjecture, including the related results of Füredi and Alon, Krivelevich and Sudakov. Our proof uses supersaturation and a random walk on an auxiliary graph.
The {\em independence ratio} of a graph $G$ is defined by \[ ι(G) := \sup_{X \subset V(G)} \frac{|X|}{α(X)},\] where $α(X)$ is the independence number of the subgraph of $G$ induced by $X$. The independence ratio is a relaxation of the chromatic number $χ(G)$ in the sense that $χ(G) \geq ι(G)$ for every graph $G$, while for many natural classes of graphs these quantities are almost equal. In this paper, we address two old conjectures of Erdős on cycles in graphs with large chromatic number and a conjecture of Erdős and Hajnal on graphs with infinite chromatic number.
In this paper, we show that every $(2^{n-1}+1)$-vertex induced subgraph of the $n$-dimensional cube graph has maximum degree at least $\sqrt{n}$. This result is best possible, and improves a logarithmic lower bound shown by Chung, Füredi, Graham and Seymour in 1988. As a direct consequence, we prove that the sensitivity and degree of a boolean function are polynomially related, solving an outstanding foundational problem in theoretical computer science, the Sensitivity Conjecture of Nisan and Szegedy.
Given a $k\times l$ $(0,1)$-matrix $F$, we denote by $\mathrm{fs}(m,F)$ the largest number for which there is an $m \times \mathrm{fs}(m,F)$ $(0,1)$-matrix with no repeated columns and no induced submatrix equal to $F$. A conjecture of Anstee, Frankl, Füredi and Pach states that $\mathrm{fs}(m,F) = O(m^k)$ for a fixed matrix $F$. The main results of this paper are that $\mathrm{fs}(m,F) = m^{2+ o(1)}$ if $k=2$ and that $\mathrm{fs}(m,F) = m^{5k/3 -1 + o(1)}$ if $k\geq 3$.
The family $Σ_r$ consists of all $r$-graphs with three edges $D_1,D_2,D_3$ such that $|D_1\cap D_2|=r-1$ and $D_1 \triangle D_2 \subseteq D_3$. A generalized triangle, $\mathcal{T}_r \in Σ_r$ is an $r$-graph on $\{1,2,\ldots,2r-1\}$ with three edges $D_1, D_2, D_3$, such that $D_1=\{1,2,\dots,r-1, r\}, D_2= \{1, 2, \dots, r-1, r+1 \}$ and $D_3 = \{r, r+1, \dots, 2r-1\}.$ Frankl and Füredi conjectured that for all $r\geq 4$, $ex(n,Σ_r) = ex(n,\mathcal{T}_r )$ for all sufficiently large $n$ and they also proved it for $r=3$. Later, Pikhurko showed that the conjecture holds for $r=4$. In this pap…
In their celebrated paper [Ramsey-Type Theorems, Discrete Appl. Math. 25 (1989) 37-52], Erdős and Hajnal asked the following: is it true, that for any finite graph H there exists a constant c(H) such that for any finite graph G, if G does not contain complete or empty induced subgraphs of size at least |V(G)|^c(H), then H can be isomorphically embedded into G ? The positive answer has become known as the Erdős-Hajnal conjecture. In Theorem 3.20 of the present paper we settle this conjecture in the affirmative. To do so, we are studying here the fine structure of ultraproducts of finite sets, s…
The Erdos-Hajnal Conjecture asserts that for every graph H there is a constant c > 0 such that every graph G that does not contain H as an induced subgraph has a clique or stable set of cardinality at least |G|^c. In this paper, we prove a conjecture of Liebenau and Pilipczuk, that for every forest H there exists c > 0, such that every graph G contains either an induced copy of H, or a vertex of degree at least c|G|, or two disjoint sets of at least c|G| vertices with no edges between them. It follows that for every forest H there is c > 0 so that if G contains neither H nor its complement as …
An $n$-by-$n$ bipartite graph is $H$-saturated if the addition of any missing edge between its two parts creates a new copy of $H$. In 1964, Erdős, Hajnal and Moon made a conjecture on the minimum number of edges in a $K_{s,s}$-saturated bipartite graph. This conjecture was proved independently by Wessel and Bollobás in a more general, but ordered, setting: they showed that the minimum number of edges in a $K_{(s,t)}$-saturated bipartite graph is $n^2-(n-s+1)(n-t+1)$, where $K_{(s,t)}$ is the "ordered" complete bipartite graph with $s$ vertices in the first color class and $t$ vertices in the …
A graph G is H-free if it has no induced subgraph isomorphic to H. We prove that a $P_5$-free graph with clique number $ω\ge 3$ has chromatic number at most $ω^{\log_2(ω)}$. The best previous result was an exponential upper bound $(5/27)3^ω$, due to Esperet, Lemoine, Maffray, and Morel. A polynomial bound would imply that the celebrated Erdos-Hajnal conjecture holds for $P_5$, which is the smallest open case. Thus there is great interest in whether there is a polynomial bound for $P_5$-free graphs, and our result is an attempt to approach that.
