Mean-square convergence and stability of the backward Euler method for stochastic differential delay equations with highly nonlinear growing coefficients
Over the last few decades, the numerical methods for stochastic differential delay equations (SDDEs) have been investigated and developed by many scholars. Nevertheless, there is still little work to be completed. By virtue of the novel technique, this paper focuses on the mean-square convergence and stability of the backward Euler method (BEM) for SDDEs whose drift and diffusion coefficients can both grow polynomially. The upper mean-square error bounds of BEM are obtained. Then the convergence rate, which is one-half, is revealed without using the moment boundedness of numerical solutions. Furthermore, under fairly general conditions, the novel technique is applied to prove that the BEM can inherit the exponential mean-square stability with a simple proof. At last, two numerical experiments are implemented to illustrate the reliability of the theories.
We study the traditional backward Euler method for $m$-dimensional stochastic differential equations driven by fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter $H > 1/2$ whose drift coefficient satisfies the one-sided Lipschitz condition. The backward Euler scheme is proved to be of order $1$ and this rate is optimal by showing the asymptotic error distribution result. Two numerical experiments are performed to validate our claims about the optimality of the rate of convergence.
This paper considers the backward Euler based linear time filtering method for the EMAC formulation of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The time filtering is added as a modular step to the standard backward Euler code leading to a 2-step, unconditionally stable, second order linear method. Despite its success in conserving important physical quantities when the divergence constraint is only weakly enforced, the EMAC formulation is unable to improve solutions of backward Euler discretized NSE. The combination of the time filtering with the backward Euler discretized EMAC formulation …
The present work is devoted to introduce the backward Euler based modular time filter method for MHD flow. The proposed method improves the accuracy of the solution without a significant change in the complexity of the system. Since time filters for fluid variables are added as separate post processing steps, the method can be easily incorporated into an existing backward Euler code. We investigate the conservation and long time stability properties of the improved scheme. Stability and second order convergence of the method are also proven. The influences of introduced time filter method on s…
This article aims to reveal the mean-square convergence rate of the backward Euler method (BEM) for a generalized Ait-Sahaliz interest rate model with Poisson jumps. The main difficulty in the analysis is caused by the non-globally Lipschitz drift and diffusion coefficients of the model. We show that the BEM preserves positivity of the original problem. Furthermore, we successfully recover the mean-square convergence rate of order one-half for the BEM. The theoretical findings are accompanied by several numerical examples.
Convergence rate and exponential stability of backward Euler method for neutral stochastic delay differential equations under generalized monotonicity conditions
In this paper, we derive error estimates of the backward Euler-Maruyama method applied to multi-valued stochastic differential equations. An important example of such an equation is a stochastic gradient flow whose associated potential is not continuously differentiable, but assumed to be convex. We show that the backward Euler-Maruyama method is well-defined and convergent of order at least $1/4$ with respect to the root-mean-square norm. Our error analysis relies on techniques for deterministic problems developed in [Nochetto, Savaré, and Verdi, Comm.\ Pure Appl.\ Math., 2000]. We verify tha…
In this paper, we investigate the optimal strong convergence rate of numerical approximations for the Cox--Ingersoll--Ross model driven by fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter $H\in(1/2,1)$. To deal with the difficulties caused by the unbounded diffusion coefficient, we study an auxiliary equation based on Lamperti transformation. By means of Malliavin calculus, we prove that the backward Euler scheme applied to this auxiliary equation ensures the positivity of the numerical solution, and is of strong order one. Furthermore, a numerical approximation for the original model is obtain…
We analyse backward Euler time stepping schemes for the primal DPG formulation of a class of parabolic problems. Optimal error estimates are shown in the natural norm and in the $L^2$ norm of the field variable. For the heat equation the solution of our primal DPG formulation equals the solution of a standard Galerkin scheme and, thus, optimal error bounds are found in the literature. In the presence of advection and reaction terms, however, the latter identity is not valid anymore and the analysis of optimal error bounds requires to resort to elliptic projection operators. It is essential tha…
This paper deals with the backward Euler method applied to semilinear parabolic stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) driven by additive noise. The SPDE is discretized in space by the finite element method and in time by the backward Euler. We consider a larger class of nonlinear drift functions, which are of Nemytskii type and polynomial of any odd degree with negative leading term, instead of only dealing with the special case of stochastic Allen-Chan equation as in the up to date literature. Moreover our linear operator is of second order and not necessarily self-adjoint, therefo…

The backward Euler-Maruyama (BEM) method is employed to approximate the invariant measure of stochastic differential equations, where both the drift and the diffusion coefficient are allowed to grow super-linearly. The existence and uniqueness of the invariant measure of the numerical solution generated by the BEM method are proved and the convergence of the numerical invariant measure to the underlying one is shown. Simulations are provided to illustrate the theoretical results and demonstrate the application of our results in the area of system control.
For the Maxwell's equations in a Havriliak-Negami (H-N) dispersive medium, the associated energy dissipation law has not been settled at both continuous level and discrete level. In this paper, we rigorously show that the energy of the H-N model can be bounded by the initial energy and the model is well-posed. We analyse a backward Euler-type semi-discrete scheme, and prove that the modified discrete energy decays monotonically in time. Such a strong stability ensures that the scheme is unconditionally stable. We also introduce a fast temporal convolution algorithm to alleviate the burden of t…
We prove a weak rate of convergence of a fully discrete scheme for stochastic Cahn--Hilliard equation with additive noise, where the spectral Galerkin method is used in space and the backward Euler method is used in time. Compared with the Allen--Cahn type stochastic partial differential equation, the error analysis here is much more sophisticated due to the presence of the unbounded operator in front of the nonlinear term. To address such issues, a novel and direct approach has been exploited which does not rely on a Kolmogorov equation but on the integration by parts formula from Malliavin c…

In this paper, we consider scalar stochastic differential equations (SDEs) with a superlinearly growing and piecewise continuous drift coefficient. Existence and uniqueness of strong solutions of such SDEs are obtained. Furthermore, the classical $L_p$-error rate 1/2 for all $p\in [1, +\infty)$ is recovered for the tamed Euler scheme. A numerical example is provided to support our conclusion.

A class of linear parabolic equations are considered. We give a posteriori error estimates in the maximum norm for a method that comprises extrapolation applied to the backward Euler method in time and finite element discretisations in space. We use the idea of elliptic reconstructions and certain bounds for the Green's function of the parabolic operator.
This paper is concerned with the numerical stability of time fractional delay differential equations (F-DDEs) based on Grünwald-Letnikov (GL) approximation (also called fraction backward Euler scheme) for the Caputo fractional derivative, in particular, the numerical stability region and the Mittag-Leffler stability. Using the boundary locus technique, we first derive the exact expression of the numerically stability region in the parameter plane, and show that the fractional backward Euler scheme based on GL scheme is not $τ(0)$-stable, which is different from the backward Euler scheme for in…

Motivated by fractional derivative models in viscoelasticity, a class of semilinear stochastic Volterra integro-differential equations, and their deterministic counterparts, are considered. A generalized exponential Euler method, named here as the Mittag-Leffler Euler integrator, is used for the temporal discretization, while the spatial discretization is performed by the spectral Galerkin method. The temporal rate of strong convergence is found to be (almost) twice compared to when the backward Euler method is used together with a convolution quadrature for time discretization. Numerical expe…
The principle of least action is one of the most fundamental physical principle. It says that among all possible motions connecting two points in a phase space, the system will exhibit those motions which extremise an action functional. Many qualitative features of dynamical systems, such as the presence of conservation laws and energy balance equations, are related to the existence of an action functional. Incorporating variational structure into learning algorithms for dynamical systems is, therefore, crucial in order to make sure that the learned model shares important features with the exa…
In this paper, we are concerned with the numerical solution for the backward fractional Feynman-Kac equation with non-smooth initial data. Here we first provide the regularity estimate of the solution. And then we use the backward Euler and second-order backward difference convolution quadratures to approximate the Riemann-Liouville fractional substantial derivative and get the first- and second-order convergence in time. The finite element method is used to discretize the Laplace operator with the optimal convergence rates. Compared with the previous works for the backward fractional Feynman-…
Our aim is to study the backward problem, i.e. recover the initial data from the terminal observation, of the subdiffusion with time dependent coefficients. First of all, by using the smoothing property of solution operators and a perturbation argument of freezing the diffusion coefficients, we show a stability estimate in Sobolev spaces, under some smallness/largeness condition on the terminal time. Moreover, in case of noisy observation, we apply a quasi-boundary value method to regularize the problem and then show the convergence of the regularization scheme. Finally, to numerically reconst…
