We prove an improvement on Schmidt's upper bound on the number of number fields of degree $n$ and absolute discriminant less than X for $6 \leq n \leq 94$. We carry this out by improving and applying a uniform bound on the number of monic integer polynomials, having bounded height and discriminant divisible by a large square, that we proved in a previous work.
We give an upper bound on the number of extensions of a fixed number field of prescribed degree and discriminant less than X; these bounds improve on work of Schmidt. We also prove various related results, such as lower bounds for the number of extensions and upper bounds for Galois extensions.
The problem of analyzing the number of number field extensions $L/K$ with bounded (relative) discriminant has been the subject of renewed interest in recent years, with significant advances made by Schmidt, Ellenberg-Venkatesh, Bhargava, Bhargava-Shankar-Wang, and others. In this paper, we use the geometry of numbers and invariant theory of finite groups, in a manner similar to Ellenberg and Venkatesh, to give an upper bound on the number of extensions $L/K$ with fixed degree, bounded relative discriminant, and specified Galois closure.
In the paper we obtain the asymtotic number of integral quadratic polynomials with bounded heights and discriminants as the upper bound of heights tends to infinity.
In the paper we partially solved the problem of the distribution of the discriminants of integral polynomials in the cubic case. We proved the asymptotic formula for the number of integral cubic polynomials having bounded height and bounded discriminant. The main term of the obtained formula is the best possible for the considered range of polynomial discriminant values.
We prove an asymptotic formula for the number of multi-quadratic number fields of bounded discriminant with a power-saving error term. Furthermore, we explicitly calculate the leading coefficient and extend our result to totally real multi-quadratic number fields.
Let $N_n(X)$ denote the number of degree $n$ number fields with discriminant bounded by $X$. In this note, we improve the best known upper bounds on $N_n(X)$, finding that $N_n(X) = O(X^{ c (\log n)^2})$ for an explicit constant $c$.
Let $K$ be a number field and $d_K$ the absolute value of the discrimant of $K/\mathbb{Q}$. We consider the root discriminant $d_L^{\frac{1}{[L:\mathbb{Q}]}}$ of extensions $L/K$. We show that for any $N>0$ and any positive integer n, the set of length n solvable extensions of $K$ with root discriminant less than $N$ is finite. The result is motivated by the study of class field towers.
For a binary quadratic form $Q$, we consider the action of $\mathrm{SO}_Q$ on a two-dimensional vector space. This representation yields perhaps the simplest nontrivial example of a prehomogeneous vector space that is not irreducible, and of a coregular space whose underlying group is not semisimple. We show that the nondegenerate integer orbits of this representation are in natural bijection with orders in cubic fields having a fixed "lattice shape". Moreover, this correspondence is discriminant-preserving: the value of the invariant polynomial of an element in this representation agrees with…
We prove that the number of quartic $S_4$--extensions of the rationals of given discriminant $d$ is $O_\eps(d^{1/2+\eps})$ for all $\eps>0$. For a prime number $p$ we derive that the dimension of the space of octahedral modular forms of weight 1 and conductor $p$ or $p^2$ is bounded above by $O(p^{1/2}\log(p)^2)$.
We show that the set of numbers with bounded Lüroth expansions (or bounded Lüroth series) is winning and strong winning. From either winning property, it immediately follows that the set is dense, has full Hausdorff dimension, and satisfies a countable intersection property. Our result matches the well-known analogous result for bounded continued fraction expansions or, equivalently, badly approximable numbers. We note that Lüroth expansions have a countably infinite Markov partition, which leads to the notion of infinite distortion (in the sense of Markov partitions).
We determine, asymptotically, the number of quintic fields having bounded discriminant. Specifically, we prove that the asymptotic number of quintic fields having absolute discriminant at most X is a constant times X. In contrast with the quartic case, we also show that a density of 100% of quintic fields, when ordered by absolute discriminant, have Galois closure with full Galois group $S_5$. The analogues of these results are also proven for orders in quintic fields. Finally, we give an interpretation of the various constants appearing in these theorems in terms of local masses of quintic ri…
We obtain upper bounds for the number of monic irreducible polynomials over $\mathbb Z$ of a fixed degree $n$ and a growing height $H$ for which the field generated by one of its roots has a given discriminant. We approach it via counting square-free parts of polynomial discriminants via two complementing approaches. In turn, this leads to a lower bound on the number of distinct discriminants of fields generated by roots of polynomials of degree $n$ and height at most $H$. We also give an upper bound for the number of trinomials of bounded height with given square-free part of the discriminant…
By Northcott's Theorem there are only finitely many algebraic points in affine $n$-space of fixed degree over a given number field and of height at most $X$. For large $X$ the asymptotics of these cardinalities have been investigated by Schanuel, Schmidt, Gao, Masser and Vaaler, and the author. In this paper we study the case where the coordinates of the points are restricted to algebraic integers, and we derive the analogues of Schanuel's, Schmidt's, Gao's and the author's results.
We study some counting questions concerning products of positive integers $u_1, \ldots, u_n$ which form a non-zero perfect square, or more generally, a perfect $k$-th power. We obtain an asymptotic formula for the number of such integers of bounded size and in particular improve and generalize a result of D. I. Tolev (2011). We also use similar ideas to count the discriminants of number fields which are multiquadratic extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$ and improve and generalize a result of N. Rome (2017).
Recently, W. M. Schmidt and L. Summerer introduced a new theory which allowed them to recover the main known inequalities relating the usual exponents of Diophantine approximation to a point in $\mathbb{R}^n$, and to discover new ones. They first note that these exponents can be computed in terms of the successive minima of a parametric family of convex bodies attached to the given point. Then they prove that the $n$-tuple of these successive minima can in turn be approximated up to bounded difference by a function from a certain class. In this paper, we show that the same is true within a sma…
Weighted enumeration of number-fields and counting points that take bounded squarefree values along certain polynomials using Pseudo and Sudo maximal orders
Let $\mathcal{D}=(d_n)_{n=1}^\infty$ be a bounded sequence of integers with $d_n\ge 2$ and let $(i, j)$ be a pair of strictly positive numbers with $i+j=1$. We prove that the set of $x \in \RR$ for which there exists some constant $c(x) > 0$ such that \[ \max\{|q|_\DDD^{1/i}, \|qx\|^{1/j}\} > c(x)/ q \qquad \forall q \in \NN \] is one quarter winning (in the sense of Schmidt games). Thus the intersection of any countable number of such sets is of full dimension. In turn, this establishes the natural analogue of Schmidt's conjecture within the framework of the de Mathan-Teulié conjecture -- als…
We give simple proofs of the Davenport--Heilbronn theorems, which provide the main terms in the asymptotics for the number of cubic fields having bounded discriminant and for the number of 3-torsion elements in the class groups of quadratic fields having bounded discriminant. We also establish second main terms for these theorems, thus proving a conjecture of Roberts. Our arguments provide natural interpretations for the various constants appearing in these theorems in terms of local masses of cubic rings.
The minimal integral Mahler measure of a number field $K$, $M(\mathcal{O}_K)$, is the minimal Mahler measure of a non-torsion primitive element of $\mathcal{O}_K$. Upper and lower bounds, which depend on the discriminant, are known. We show that for cubics, the lower bounds are sharp with respect to its growth as a function of discriminant. We construct an algorithm to compute $M(\mathcal{O}_K)$ for all cubics with absolute value of the discriminant bounded by $N$.
We study the asymptotic count of dihedral quartic extensions over a fixed number field with bounded norm of the relative discriminant. The main term of this count (including a summation formula for the constant) can be found in the literature (see Cohen--Diaz y Diaz--Olivier for the statement without proof and see Klüners for a proof), but a power-saving for the error term has not been explicitly determined except in the case that the base field is $\mathbb{Q}$. In this article, we describe the argument for obtaining both the explicit main term and a power-saving error term for the number of $…
It is shown that for some explicit constants $c>0, A>0$, the asymptotic for the number of positive non-square discriminants $D<x$ with fundamental solution $\varepsilon_D< x^{\frac 12+α}, 0<α<c$, remains preserved if we require moreover $\mathbb Q(\sqrt D)$ to contain an irrational with partial quotients bounded by $A$.
Each number field has an associated finite abelian group, the class group, that records certain properties of arithmetic within the ring of integers of the field. The class group is well-studied, yet also still mysterious. A central conjecture of Brumer and Silverman states that for each prime $\ell$, every number field has the property that its class group has very few elements of order $\ell$, where "very few" is measured relative to the absolute discriminant of the field. This paper surveys recent progress toward this conjecture, and outlines its close connections to counting prime numbers,…
Let $G$ be a wreath product of the form $C_2 \wr H$, where $C_2$ is the cyclic group of order 2. Under mild conditions for $H$ we determine the asymptotic behavior of the counting functions for number fields $K/k$ with Galois group $G$ and bounded discriminant. Those counting functions grow linearly with the norm of the discriminant and this result coincides with a conjecture of Malle. Up to a constant factor these groups have the same asymptotic behavior as the conjectured one for symmetric groups.
The goal is to obtain an asymptotic formula for the number of quadratic extensions with bounded discriminant of a some quadratic number field with odd class number. This extends an already known result for Q.
We will give new upper bounds for the number of solutions to the inequalities of the shape $|F(x , y)| \leq h$, where $F(x , y)$ is a sparse binary form, with integer coefficients, and $h$ is a sufficiently small integer in terms of the absolute value of the discriminant of the binary form $F$. Our bounds depend on the number of non-vanishing coefficients of $F(x , y)$. When $F$ is really sparse, we establish a sharp upper bound for the number of solutions that is linear in terms of the number of non-vanishing coefficients. This work will provide affirmative answers to a number of conjectures …
Let $C$ be a hyperelliptic curve of genus $g$ over the fraction field $K$ of a discrete valuation ring $R$. Assume that the residue field $k$ of $R$ is perfect and that $\mathop{\textrm{char}} k \neq 2$. Assume that the Weierstrass points of $C$ are $K$-rational. Let $S = \mathop{\textrm{Spec}} R$. Let $\mathcal{X}$ be the minimal proper regular model of $C$ over $S$. Let $\mathop{\textrm{Art}} (\mathcal{X}/S)$ denote the Artin conductor of the $S$-scheme $\mathcal{X}$ and let $ν(Δ)$ denote the minimal discriminant of $C$. We prove that $-\mathop{\textrm{Art}} (\mathcal{X}/S) \leq ν(Δ)$. As a …
In this paper, we consider integral and irreducible binary quartic forms whose Galois group is isomorphic to a subgroup of the dihedral group of order eight. We first show that the set of all such forms is a union of families indexed by integral binary quadratic forms $f(x,y)$ of non-zero discriminant. Then, we shall enumerate the $\operatorname{GL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$-equivalence classes of all such forms associated to a fixed $f(x,y)$.
We determine the average number of $3$-torsion elements in the ray class groups of fixed (integral) conductor $c$ of quadratic fields ordered by absolute discriminant, generalizing Davenport and Heilbronn's theorem on class groups. A consequence of this result is that a positive proportion of such ray class groups of quadratic fields have trivial 3-torsion subgroup whenever the conductor $c$ is taken to be a squarefree integer having very few prime factors none of which are congruent to $1 \bmod 3$. Additionally, we compute the second main term for the number of $3$-torsion elements in ray cla…
Let $G$ be a Frobenius group with an abelian Frobenius kernel $F$ and let $k$ be a finite extension of $\mathbb{Q}$. We obtain an upper bound for the number of degree $|F|$ algebraic extensions $K/k$ with Galois group $G$ with the norm of the discriminant $\mathcal{N}_{k/\mathbb{Q}}(d_{K/k})$ bounded above by $X$. We extend this method for any group $G$ that has an abelian normal subgroup. If $G$ has an abelian normal subgroup, then we obtain upper bounds for the number of degree $|G|$ extensions $N/k$ with Galois group $G$ with bounded norm of the discriminant. Malle made a conjecture about w…
We give an asymptotic formula for the number of elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ with bounded Faltings height. Silverman has shown that the Faltings height for elliptic curves over number fields can be expressed in terms of modular functions and the minimal discriminant of the elliptic curve. We use this to recast the problem as one of counting lattice points in a particular region in $\mathbb{R}^2$.
Consider a random polynomial $$ G_Q(x)=ξ_{Q,n}x^n+ξ_{Q,n-1}x^{n-1}+...+ξ_{Q,0} $$ with independent coefficients uniformly distributed on $2Q+1$ integer points $\{-Q, ..., Q\}$. Denote by $D(G_Q)$ the discriminant of $G_Q$. We show that there exists a constant $C_n$, depending on $n$ only such that for all $Q\ge 2$ the distribution of $D(G_Q)$ can be approximated as follows $$ \sup_{-\infty\leq a\leq b\leq\infty}|\mathbb{P}(a\leq \frac{D(G_Q)}{Q^{2n-2}}\leq b)-\int_a^bφ_n(x)\, dx|\leq\frac{C_n}{\log Q}, $$ where $φ_n$ denotes the distribution function of the discriminant of a random polynomial …
In 1848, Hermite introduced a reduction theory for binary forms of degree $n$ which was developed more fully in the seminal 1917 treatise of Julia. This canonical method of reduction made use of a new, fundamental, but irrational $\mathrm{SL}_2$-invariant of binary $n$-ic forms defined over $\mathbb{R}$, which is now known as the Julia invariant. In this paper, for each $n$ and $k$ with $n+k\geq 3$, we determine the asymptotic behavior of the number of $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$-equivalence classes of binary $n$-ic forms, with $k$ pairs of complex roots, having bounded Julia invariant. Specia…
We prove that the set of bounded geodesics in Teichmuller space are a winning set for Schmidt's game. This is a notion of largeness in a metric space that can apply to measure 0 and meager sets. We prove analogous closely related results on any Riemann surface, in any stratum of quadratic differentials, on any Teichmuller disc and for intervals exchanges with any fixed irreducible permutation.
We study the number $N(n, A_n, X)$ of number fields of degree $n$ whose Galois closure has Galois group $A_n$ and whose discriminant is bounded by $X$. By a conjecture of Malle, we expect that $N(n, A_n, X) \sim C_n X^{1/2} (\log X)^{b_n}$, for constants $b_n$ and $C_n$. For $5 < n < 84394$, the best known upper bound is $N(n, A_n, X) \ll X^{\frac{n + 2}{4}}$; this bound follows from Schmidt's Theorem, which implies there are $\ll X^{\frac{n + 2}{4}}$ number fields of degree $n$. (For $n > 84393$, there are better bounds due to Ellenberg and Venkatesh.) We show, using the important work of Pil…
We show that for a large class of finite groups G, the number of Galois extensions E/Q of group G and discriminant $|d_E|\leq y$ grows like a power of $y$ (for some specified exponent). The groups G are the regular Galois groups over Q and the extensions E/Q that we count are obtained by specialization from a given regular Galois extension F/Q(T). The extensions E/Q can further be prescribed any unramified local behavior at each suitably large prime $p\leq \log (y)/δ$ for some $δ\geq 1$. This result is a step toward the Malle conjecture on the number of Galois extensions of given group and bou…
We consider p-extensions of number fields such that the filtration of the Galois group by higher ramification groups is of prescribed finite length. We extend well-known properties of tame extensions to this more general setting; for instance, we show that these towers, when infinite, are ``asymptotically good'' (an explicit bound for the root discriminant is given). We study the difficult problem of bounding the relation-rank of the Galois groups in question. Results of Gordeev and Wingberg imply that the relation-rank can tend to infinity when the set of ramified primes is fixed but the leng…
We prove upper bounds for the average size of the $\ell$-torsion $\text{Cl}_K[\ell]$ of the class group of $K$, as $K$ runs through certain natural families of number fields and $\ell$ is a positive integer. We refine a key argument, used in almost all results of this type, which links upper bounds for $\text{Cl}_K[\ell]$ to the existence of many primes splitting completely in $K$ that are small compared to the discriminant of $K$. Our improvements are achieved through the introduction of a new family of specialised invariants of number fields to replace the discriminant in this argument, in c…
We obtain unconditional, effective number-field analogues of the three Mertens' theorems, all with explicit constants and valid for $x\geq 2$. Our error terms are explicitly bounded in terms of the degree and discriminant of the number field. To this end, we provide unconditional bounds, with explicit constants, for the residue of the corresponding Dedekind zeta function at $s=1$.
We prove an estimate on the number of rational points on the Grassmannian variety of bounded twisted height, refining the classical results of Schmidt ([12]) and Thunder ([20]) over the rational field: most importantly, our formula counts all points. Among the consequences are a couple of new implications on the classical subject of counting rational points on flag varieties.
We give a heuristic argument supporting conjectures of Bhargava on the asymptotics of the number of $S_n$-number fields having bounded discriminant. We then make our arguments rigorous in the case $n=3$ giving a new elementary proof of the Davenport-Heilbronn theorem. Our basic method is to count elements of small height in $S_n$-fields while carefully keeping track of the index of the monogenic ring that they generate.
It is conjectured that within the class group of any number field, for every integer $\ell \geq 1$, the $\ell$-torsion subgroup is very small (in an appropriate sense, relative to the discriminant of the field). In nearly all settings, the full strength of this conjecture remains open, and even partial progress is limited. Significant recent progress toward average versions of the $\ell$-torsion conjecture has crucially relied on counts for number fields, raising interest in how these two types of question relate. In this paper we make explicit the quantitative relationships between the $\ell$…
