In this paper we obtain an asymptotic formula for the number of $\operatorname{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$-equivalence classes of positive definite binary quadratic forms over $\bZ$ having bounded discriminant $Δ= 1-4p$, with $p$ a prime. We also give a random Euler product model for the distribution of Hurwitz class numbers, which is supported by our formula.
It was conjectured by Gauss that any negative discriminant with at least 32 genera has at least two classes of binary quadratic forms in each genus. We prove that such a discriminant cannot have a particularly large prime factor, by an argument similar to that of Baker's solution to Gauss' class number one problem.
For every prime number p, we show the existence of a solvable number field L ramified only at {p and infinity whose p-Hilbert Class field tower is infinite.
We study p-divisibility of discriminants of Hecke algebras associated to spaces of cusp forms of prime level. We make a precise conjecture about the indexes of Hecke algebras in their normalisation which implies (if true) the conjecture that there are no mod p congruences between non-conjugate newforms of weight 2 and level Gamma_0(p).
We present an algorithm for computing discriminants and prime ideal decomposition in number fields. The algorithm is a refinement of a p-adic factorization method based on Newton polygons of higher order. The running-time and memory requirements of the algorithm appear to be very good: for a given prime number p, it computes the p-valuation of the discriminant and the factorization of p in a number field of degree 1000 in a few seconds, in a personal computer.
In this paper, we obtain an asymptotic formula for the number of imaginary quadratic fields with prime discriminant and class number up to $H$, as $H\to \infty$. Previously, such an asymptotic was only known under the assumption of the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis, by the recent work of Holmin, Jones, Kurlberg, McLeman and Petersen.
We state and prove an identity which connects theta series associated with binary quadratic forms of idoneal discriminants $Δ$ and $Δp^2$, for $p$ a prime. Employing this identity, we extend the results of Toh by writing the theta series of forms of discriminant $Δp^2$ as a linear combination of Lambert series. We then use these Lambert series decompositions to give explicit representation formulas for the forms of discriminant $Δp^2$. Lastly, we give a generalization of our main identity, which employs a map of Buell to connect forms of discriminant $Δ$ to $Δp^2$. Our generalized identity lin…
We show that certain spaces of vector valued modular forms are isomorphic to spaces of scalar valued modular forms whose Fourier coefficients are supported on suitable progressions. As an application we give a very explicit description of Borcherds products on Hilbert modular surfaces.
The discriminant of a polynomial of the form $\pm x^n \pm x^m \pm 1$ has the form $n^n \pm m^m(n-m)^{n-m}$ when $n,m$ are relatively prime. We investigate when these discriminants have prime power divisors. We explain several symmetries that appear in the classification of these values of $n,m$. We prove that there are infinitely many pairs of integers $n,m$ for which this discriminant has no prime cube divisors. This result is extended to show that for infinitely many fixed $m$, there are infinitely many $n$ for which the discriminant has no prime cube divisor.
We consider the simplest quartic number fields $\mathbb{K}_m$ defined by the irreducible quartic polynomials $$x^4-mx^3-6x^2+mx+1,$$ where $m$ runs over the positive rational integers such that the odd part of $m^2+16$ is squarefree. In this paper, we study the common index divisor $I(\mathbb K_m)$ and determine explicitly the prime ideal decomposition for any prime number in any simplest quartic number fields $\mathbb{K}_m$. On the other hand, we establish an asymptotic formula for the number of simplest quartic fields with discriminant $\leq x$ and given index.
Let $Q$ be a positive-definite quaternary quadratic form with prime discriminant. We give an explicit lower bound on the number of representations of a positive integer $n$ by $Q$. This problem is connected with deriving an upper bound on the Petersson norm $\langle C, C \rangle$ of the cuspidal part of the theta series of $Q$. We derive an upper bound on $\langle C, C \rangle$ that depends on the smallest positive integer not represented by the dual form $Q^{*}$. In addition, we give a non-trivial upper bound on the sum of the integers $n$ excepted by $Q$.
We define the notion of a weighted discriminant and corresponding counting function for number fields, and what it means for these counting functions to have a mass formula for a set of primes. We extend a result of Kedlaya to show that any proper counting function for a finite group $Γ$ has a mass formula for the set of primes not dividing $|Γ|$. We also prove that if $Γ$ is an $\ell$-group for some prime $\ell$, then there are only finitely many weighted discriminant counting functions for $Γ$-extensions of $\Q$ that have a mass formula for all primes. Finally, we enumerate all such counting…
We investigate the average distribution of primes represented by positive definite integral binary quadratic forms, the average being taken over negative fundamental discriminants in long ranges. In particular, we prove corresponding results of Bombieri-Vinogradov type and of Barban-Davenport-Halberstam type, although with shorter ranges than in the original theorems for primes in arithmetic progressions: The results imply that, for all $a>0$, the least prime that can be represented by any given positive definite binary quadratic form of discriminant $q$ is smaller than $|q|^{7+a}$ for all for…
The discriminant of a trinomial of the form $x^n \pm x^m \pm 1$ has the form $\pm n^n \pm (n-m)^{n-m} m^m$ if $n$ and $m$ are relatively prime. We investigate when these discriminants have nontrivial square factors. We explain various unlikely-seeming parametric families of square factors of these discriminant values: for example, when $n$ is congruent to 2 (mod 6) we have that $((n^2-n+1)/3)^2$ always divides $n^n - (n-1)^{n-1}$. In addition, we discover many other square factors of these discriminants that do not fit into these parametric families. The set of primes whose squares can divide …
For a radical extension K of odd prime degree the ring O_K of integers is constructed as a product of subrings with the following property: for all prime divisors q of the discriminant of O_K there is a q-maximal factor. The discriminant of O_K is the greatest common divisor of the discriminants of all factors. The results are applied to give a criterion for the monogeneity of K where the opposite is not true.
Let $K=\mathbb Q(θ)$ be an algebraic number field with $θ$ a root of an irreducible trinomial $f(x)=x^6+ax+b$ belonging to $\mathbb{Z}[x]$. In this paper, for each prime number $p$ we compute the highest power of $p$ dividing the discriminant of $K$ in terms of the prime powers dividing $a,~b$ and discriminant of $f(x)$. An explicit $p$-integral basis of $K$ is also given for each prime $p$ and a method is described to obtain an integral basis of $K$ from these $p$-integral bases which is illustrated with examples.
For a binary quadratic form $Q$, we consider the action of $\mathrm{SO}_Q$ on a two-dimensional vector space. This representation yields perhaps the simplest nontrivial example of a prehomogeneous vector space that is not irreducible, and of a coregular space whose underlying group is not semisimple. We show that the nondegenerate integer orbits of this representation are in natural bijection with orders in cubic fields having a fixed "lattice shape". Moreover, this correspondence is discriminant-preserving: the value of the invariant polynomial of an element in this representation agrees with…
Let $K=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt[n]{a})$ be an extension of degree $n$ of the field $\Q$ of rational numbers, where the integer $a$ is such that for each prime $p$ dividing $n$ either $p\nmid a$ or the highest power of $p$ dividing $a$ is coprime to $p$; this condition is clearly satisfied when $a, n$ are coprime or $a$ is squarefree. The paper contains an explicit formula for the discriminant of $K$ involving only the prime powers dividing $a,n$.
Each number field has an associated finite abelian group, the class group, that records certain properties of arithmetic within the ring of integers of the field. The class group is well-studied, yet also still mysterious. A central conjecture of Brumer and Silverman states that for each prime $\ell$, every number field has the property that its class group has very few elements of order $\ell$, where "very few" is measured relative to the absolute discriminant of the field. This paper surveys recent progress toward this conjecture, and outlines its close connections to counting prime numbers,…
We report extensive computational evidence that Gauss period equations are minimal discriminant polynomials for primitive elements representing Abelian (cyclic) polynomials of prime degrees $p$. By computing 200 period equations up to $p=97$, we significantly extend tables in the compendious number fields database of Klüners and Malle. Up to $p=7$, period equations reproduce known results proved to have minimum discriminant. For $11\leq p\leq 23$, period equations coincide with 53 known but unproved cases of minimum discriminant in the database, and fill a gap of 19 missing cases. For $29\leq …
We determine, asymptotically, the number of quintic fields having bounded discriminant. Specifically, we prove that the asymptotic number of quintic fields having absolute discriminant at most X is a constant times X. In contrast with the quartic case, we also show that a density of 100% of quintic fields, when ordered by absolute discriminant, have Galois closure with full Galois group $S_5$. The analogues of these results are also proven for orders in quintic fields. Finally, we give an interpretation of the various constants appearing in these theorems in terms of local masses of quintic ri…
Let $K = \Q(θ)$ be an algebraic number field with $θ$ satisfying an irreducible polynomial $x^{9} - a$ over the field $\Q$ of rationals and $\Z_K$ denote the ring of algebraic integers of $K$. In this article, we provide the exact power of each prime which divides the index of the subgroup $\Z[θ]$ in $\Z_K$. Further, we give a $p$-integral basis of $K$ for each prime $p$. These $p$-integral bases lead to a construction of an integral basis of $K$ which is illustrated with examples.
Let $f$ be a primitive positive definite integral binary quadratic form of discriminant $-D$ and let $π_f(x)$ be the number of primes up to $x$ which are represented by $f$. We prove several types of upper bounds for $π_f(x)$ within a constant factor of its asymptotic size: unconditional, conditional on the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis (GRH), and for almost all discriminants. The key feature of these estimates is that they hold whenever $x$ exceeds a small power of $D$ and, in some cases, this range of $x$ is essentially best possible. In particular, if $f$ is reduced then this optimal range…
Given a finite transitive permutation group $G$, we investigate number fields $F/\mathbb{Q}$ of Galois group $G$ whose discriminant is only divisible by small prime powers. This generalizes previous investigations of number fields with squarefree discriminant. In particular, we obtain a comprehensive result on number fields with cubefree discriminant. Our main tools are arithmetic-geometric, involving in particular an effective criterion on ramification in specializations of Galois covers.
Let d1 and d2 be discriminants of distinct quadratic imaginary orders O_d1 and O_d2 and let J(d1,d2) denote the product of differences of CM j-invariants with discriminants d1 and d2. In 1985, Gross and Zagier gave an elegant formula for the factorization of the integer J(d1,d2) in the case that d1 and d2 are relatively prime and discriminants of maximal orders. To compute this formula, they first reduce the problem to counting the number of simultaneous embeddings of O_d1 and O_d2 into endomorphism rings of supersingular curves, and then solve this counting problem. Interestingly, this counti…
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve over $\Q$. It is well known that the ring of endomorphisms of $E_p$, the reduction of $E$ modulo a prime $p$ of ordinary reduction, is an order of the quadratic imaginary field $Q(π_p)$ generated by the Frobenius element $π_p$. When the curve has complex multiplication (CM), this is always a fixed field as the prime varies. However, when the curve has no CM, very little is known, not only about the order, but about the fields that might appear as algebra of endomorphisms varying the prime. The ring of endomorphisms is obviously related with the arithmetic of $a_p^2…
Let $ψ: A \to F\{τ\}$ be a Drinfeld $A$-module over $F$ of rank 2 and without complex multiplication, where $A = {\mathbb{F}}_q[T]$, $F = {\mathbb{F}}_q(T)$, and $q$ is an odd prime power. For a prime $\mathfrak{p} = p A$ of $A$ of good reduction for $ψ$ and with residue field ${\mathbb{F}}_{\mathfrak{p}}$, we study the growth of the absolute value $|Δ_{\mathfrak{p}}|$ of the discriminant of the ${\mathbb{F}}_{\mathfrak{p}}$-endomorphism ring of the reduction of $ψ$ modulo $\mathfrak{p}$. We prove that for all $\mathfrak{p}$, $|Δ_{\mathfrak{p}}|$ grows with $|p|$. Moreover, we prove that for a…
Let $E/\mathbb{Q}$ be a non-CM elliptic curve. Assuming GRH, we prove that, for a set of primes $p$ of density $1$, the absolute discriminant of the $\mathbb{F}_p$-endomorphism ring of the reduction of $E$ modulo $p$ is close to maximal.
We estimate the number of primes represented by a general quadratic polynomial with discriminant $Δ$, assuming that the corresponding real character is exceptional.
In this paper, we investigate sign changes of Fourier coefficients of half-integral weight cusp forms. In a fixed square class $t\mathbb{Z}^2$, we investigate the sign changes in the $tp^2$-th coefficient as $p$ runs through the split or inert primes over the ring of integers in a quadratic extension of the rationals. We show that sign changes occur in both sets of primes when there exists a prime dividing the discriminant of the field which does not divide the level of the cusp form and find an explicit condition that determines whether sign changes occur when every prime dividing the discrim…
For a prime power $q$, we show that the discriminants of monic polynomials in $\mathbb{F}_q[x]$ of a fixed degree $m$ are equally distributed if $\gcd(q-1,m(m-1))=2$ when $q$ is odd and $\gcd(q-1,m(m-1))=1$ if $q$ is even. A theorem in the converse direction is proved when $q-1$ is squarefree.
We prove that the number of quartic $S_4$--extensions of the rationals of given discriminant $d$ is $O_\eps(d^{1/2+\eps})$ for all $\eps>0$. For a prime number $p$ we derive that the dimension of the space of octahedral modular forms of weight 1 and conductor $p$ or $p^2$ is bounded above by $O(p^{1/2}\log(p)^2)$.
Let $\ell>2$ be a positive integer, $ζ_\ell$ a primitive $\ell$-th root of unity, and $K$ a number field containing $ζ_\ell+ζ_\ell^{-1}$ but not $ζ_\ell$. In a recent paper, Chonoles et. al. study iterated towers of number fields over $K$ generated by the generalized Rikuna polynomial, $r_n(x,t;\ell) \in K(t)[x]$. They note that when $K = \mathbb{Q}$, $t \in \{0,1\}$, and $\ell=3$, the only ramified prime in the resulting tower is 3, and they ask under what conditions is the number of ramified primes small. In this paper, we apply a theorem of Guàrdia, Montes, and Nart to derive a formula for …
When the discriminants $Δ$ and $Δp^2$ are idoneal, Patane proved a theorem which connects the theta series associated to binary quadratic forms of each discriminant. This paper generalizes the main theorem of Patane by no longer requiring $Δ$ and $Δp^2$ to be idoneal. In particular, we state and prove an identity which connects the theta series associated to a single binary quadratic form of discriminant $Δ$ to a theta series associated to a subset of binary quadratic forms of discriminant $Δp^2$. Here and everywhere $p$ is a prime.
Let $D<0$ be a fundamental discriminant and $h(D)$ be the class number of $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{D})$. Let $R(X,D)$ be the number of classes of the binary quadratic forms of discriminant $D$ which represent a prime number in the interval $[X,2X]$. Moreover, assume that $π_{D}(X)$ is the number of primes, which split in $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{D})$ with norm in the interval $[X,2X].$ We prove that $$ \Big(\frac{π_D(X)}{π(X)}\Big)^2 \ll \frac{R(X,D)}{h(D)}\Big(1+\frac{h(D)}{π(X)}\Big), $$ where $π(X)$ is the number of primes in the interval $[X,2X]$ and the implicit constant in $\ll$ is independent of $D$ …
Using Kummer theory for a finite extension K of \Qp(ζ)(where p is a prime number and ζa primitive p-th root of~1), we compute the ramification filtration and the discriminant of an arbitrary elementary abelian p-extension of K. We also develop the analogous Artin-Schreier theory for finite extensions of \Fp((π)) and derive similar results for their elementary abelian p-extensions.
In the paper we partially solved the problem of the distribution of the discriminants of integral polynomials in the cubic case. We proved the asymptotic formula for the number of integral cubic polynomials having bounded height and bounded discriminant. The main term of the obtained formula is the best possible for the considered range of polynomial discriminant values.
In this paper we describe how to use the algorithmic methods provided by Hunter and Pohst in order to give a complete classification of number fields of degree 8 and signature (2,3) with absolute discriminant less than a certain bound. The choice of this bound comes from the local corrections given by prime ideals to the lower estimates for discriminants obtained with the Odlyzko-Poitou-Serre method.
We prove an improvement on Schmidt's upper bound on the number of number fields of degree $n$ and absolute discriminant less than X for $6 \leq n \leq 94$. We carry this out by improving and applying a uniform bound on the number of monic integer polynomials, having bounded height and discriminant divisible by a large square, that we proved in a previous work.
In this note we give a brief survey of the most elementary criteria used to determine the surjectivity of the trace operator on the ring of integers of a number field $K$. Furthermore, we introduce an easy to state yet unknown surjectivity criterion depending only on the prime factorization of the degree $n$ of $K$ and on the squarefree part of the discriminant $d_K$.
Using the action of the Galois group of a normal extension of number fields, we generalize and symmetrize various fundamental statements in algebra and algebraic number theory concerning splitting types of prime ideals, factorization types of polynomials modulo primes, and cycle types of the Galois groups of polynomials. One remarkable example is the removal of all artificial constraints from the Kummer-Dedekind Theorem that relates splitting and factorization patterns. Finally, we present an elementary proof that the discriminant of the splitting field of a monic irreducible polynomial with i…
Given a Hilbert cuspidal newform $g$ we construct a family of modular forms of half-integral weight whose Fourier coefficients give the central values of the twisted $L$-series of $g$ by fundamental discriminants. The family is parametrized by quadratic conditions on the primes dividing the level of $g$, where each form has coefficients supported on the discriminants satisfying the conditions. These modular forms are given as generalized theta series and thus their coefficients can be effectively computed. Our construction works over arbitrary totally real number fields, except that in the cas…
Let $p$ and $q$ be two distinct prime numbers, and $X^{pq}/w_q$ be the quotient of the Shimura curve of discriminant $pq$ by the Atkin-Lehner involution $w_q$. We describe a way to verify in wide generality a criterion of Parent and Yafaev to prove that if $p$ and $q$ satisfy some explicite congruence conditions, known as the conditions of the non ramified case of Ogg, and if $p$ is large enough compared to $q$, then the quotient $X^{pq}/w_q$ has no rational point, except possibly special points.
The equidistribution of roots of quadratic congruences with prime moduli depends crucially upon effective bounds for a special Weyl linear form. Duke, Friedlander and Iwaniec discovered a strong estimate for this Weyl linear form when the quadratic polynomial has negative discriminant. Tóth established an analogous but weaker bound when the quadratic polynomial has positive discriminant. We obtain a stronger estimate for the Weyl linear form for quadratics of positive discriminants.
The main result of this paper is to extend from $\Q$ to each of the nine imaginary quadratic fields of class number one a result of Serre (1987) and Mestre-Oesterlé (1989), namely that if $E$ is an elliptic curve of prime conductor then either $E$ or a $2$-, $3$- or $5$-isogenous curve has prime discriminant. For four of the nine fields, the theorem holds with no change, while for the remaining five fields the discriminant of a curve with prime conductor is either prime or the square of a prime. The proof is conditional in two ways: first that the curves are modular, so are associated to suita…
Let $ψ_\K$ be the Chebyshev function of a number field $\K$. Under GRH we prove an explicit upper bound for $|ψ_\K(x)-x|$ in terms of the degree and the discriminant of $\K$. The new bound improves significantly on previous known results.
We classify all the number fields with signature (4,2), (6,1), (1,4) and (3,3) having discriminant lower than a specific upper bound. This completes the search for minimum discriminants for fields of degree 8 and continues it in the degree 9 case. We recall the theoretical tools and the algorithmic steps upon which our procedure is based, then we focus on the novelties due to a new implementation of this process on the computer algebra system PARI/GP; finally, we make some remarks about the final results, among which the existence of a number field with signature $(3,3)$ and small discriminant…
The purpose of this note is to suggest an analogue for genus 2 curves of part of Gross and Zagier's work on elliptic curves. Experimentally, for genus 2 curves with CM by a quartic CM field K, it appears that primes dividing the denominators of the discriminants of the Igusa class polynomials all have the property 1) that they are bounded by d, the absolute value of the discriminant of K, and 2) that they divide d-x^2, for some integer x whose square is less than d. A slightly stronger condition is given in Section 3. Such primes are primes of bad reduction for the genus 2 curve and primes of …
We analyze the probability that, for a fixed finite set of primes S, a random, monic, degree n polynomial f(x) with integer coefficients in a box of side B around 0 satisfies: (i) f(x) is irreducible over the rationals, with splitting field over the rationals having Galois group $S_n$; (ii) the polynomial discriminant Disc(f) is relatively prime to all primes in S; (iii) f(x) has a prescribed splitting type at each prime p in S. The limit probabilities as $B \to \infty$ are described in terms of values of a one-parameter family of measures on $S_n$, called splitting measures, with parameter $z…
We extend known results on the number of solutions to a linear equation in at least three prime numbers when the primes involved are required to lie in specified Chebotarev classes. We prove asymptotic results similar to previous ones only now taking into account corrections coming form the Chebotarev Density Theorem and Global Class Field Theory. We then apply these results to find elliptic curves whose discriminants split completely of a given number field.
For any integer n >= 2 and any nonnegative integers r,s with r+2s = n, we give an unconditional construction of infinitely many monic irreducible polynomials of degree n with integer coefficients having squarefree discriminant and exactly r real roots. These give rise to number fields of degree n, signature (r,s), Galois group S_n, and squarefree discriminant; we may also force the discriminant to be coprime to any given integer. The number of fields produced with discriminant in the range [-N, N] is at least c N^(1/(n-1)). A corollary is that for each n \geq 3, infinitely many quadratic numbe…
We compute the homotopy groups of spectra associated by a theorem of Lurie to the Shimura curves of discriminants 6, 10, and 14, beginning with a computation of integral rings of automorphic forms on these curves. As an application, we find that a generalized truncated Brown-Peterson spectrum BP<2> is an E_\infty ring spectrum at the prime 3.
