Let $\mathcal{D}=(d_n)_{n=1}^\infty$ be a bounded sequence of integers with $d_n\ge 2$ and let $(i, j)$ be a pair of strictly positive numbers with $i+j=1$. We prove that the set of $x \in \RR$ for which there exists some constant $c(x) > 0$ such that \[ \max\{|q|_\DDD^{1/i}, \|qx\|^{1/j}\} > c(x)/ q \qquad \forall q \in \NN \] is one quarter winning (in the sense of Schmidt games). Thus the intersection of any countable number of such sets is of full dimension. In turn, this establishes the natural analogue of Schmidt's conjecture within the framework of the de Mathan-Teulié conjecture -- also known as the `Mixed Littlewood Conjecture'.
We prove a generalization of W.M. Schmidt's theorem related to the Diophantine approximations for a linear form of the type $α_1x_1+α_2x_2 +y$ with {\it positive} integers $x_1,x_2$.
We give several results related to inhomogeneous approximations to two real numbers and badly approximable numbers. Our results are related to classical theorems by A. Khintchine (1926) and to an original method invented by Y. Peres and W. Schlag (2001).
For any $i,j \ge 0$ with $i+j =1$, let $\bad(i,j)$ denote the set of points $(x,y) \in \R^2$ for which $ \max \{\|qx\|^{1/i}, \|qy\|^{1/j} \} > c/q $ for all $ q \in \N $. Here $c = c(x,y)$ is a positive constant. Our main result implies that any finite intersection of such sets has full dimension. This settles a conjecture of Wolfgang M. Schmidt in the theory of simultaneous Diophantine approximation.
It was discovered that there is a formal analogy between Nevanlinna theory and Diophantine approximation. Via Vojta's dictionary, the Second Main Theorem in Nevanlinna theory corresponds to Schmidt's Subspace Theorem in Diophantine approximation. Recently, Cherry, Dethloff, and Tan (arXiv:1503.08801v2 [math.CV]) obtained a Second Main Theorem for moving hypersurfaces intersecting projective varieites. In this paper, we shall give the counterpart of their Second Main Theorem in Diophantine approximation.
We introduce two new mathematical games, the Banach-Mazur-Schmidt game and the Banach-Mazur-McMullen game, merging well-known games. We investigate the properties of the games, as well as providing an application to Diophantine approximation theory, analyzing the geometric structure of certain Diophantine sets.
We solve the problem of giving sharp asymptotic bounds on the Hausdorff dimensions of certain sets of badly approximable matrices, thus improving results of Broderick and Kleinbock (preprint 2013) as well as Weil (preprint 2013), and generalizing to higher dimensions those of Kurzweil ('51) and Hensley ('92). In addition we use our technique to compute the Hausdorff $f$-measure of the set of matrices which are not $ψ$-approximable, given a dimension function $f$ and a function $ψ:(0,\infty)\to (0,\infty)$. This complements earlier work by Dickinson and Velani ('97) who found the Hausdorff $f$-…
This paper is a sequel to our previous paper arXiv:1105.1554, where we defined two types of intermediate Diophantine exponents, connected them to Schmidt exponents and split Dyson's transference inequality into a chain of inequalities for intermediate exponents. Here we present splitting of some other transference inequalities involving both regular and uniform Diophantine exponents.
We show that the sets of weighted badly approximable vectors in $\Bbb R^n$ are winning sets of certain games, which are modifications of $(α,β)$-games introduced by W. Schmidt in 1966. The latter winning property is stable with respect to countable intersections, and is shown to imply full Hausdorff dimension.
By applying Schmidt's lattice method, we prove results on simultaneous Diophantine approximation modulo 1 for systems of polynomials in a single prime variable provided that certain local conditions are met.
This is a revised compilation of the papers arXiv:1105.1554 and arXiv:1105.5823. We develop some of the ideas belonging to W.Schmidt and L.Summerer to define intermediate Diophantine exponents and split several transference inequalities into a chain of inequalities for intermediate exponents.
We prove a result in the area of twisted Diophantine approximation related to the theory of Schmidt games. In particular, under certain restrictions we give a affirmative answer to the analogue in this setting of a famous conjecture of Schmidt from Diophantine approximation.
Using the Parametric Geometry of Numbers introduced recently by W.M. Schmidt and L. Summerer and results by D. Roy, we establish that the spectrum of the $2n$ exponents of Diophantine approximation in dimension $n\geq3$ is a subset of $\mathbb{R}^{2n}$ with non empty interior.
In this short paper we prove a quantitative version of the Khintchine-Groshev Theorem with congruence conditions. Our argument relies on a classical argument of Schmidt on counting generic lattice points, which in turn relies on a certain variance bound on the space of lattices.
We provide a lower bound for the ratio between the ordinary and uniform exponent of both simultaneous Diophantine approximation and Diophantine approximation by linear forms in any dimension. This lower bound was conjectured by Schmidt and Summerer and already shown in dimension $2$ and $3$. This lower bound is reached at regular systems presented in the context of parametric geometry of numbers, and thus optimal.
Let $α$ and $β$ be real numbers such that $1$, $α$ and $β$ are linearly independent over $\mathbb{Q}$. A classical result of Dirichlet asserts that there are infinitely many triples of integers $(x_0,x_1,x_2)$ such that $|x_0+αx_1+βx_2| < \max\{|x_1|,|x_2|\}^{-2}$. In 1976, W. M. Schmidt asked what can be said under the restriction that $x_1$ and $x_2$ be positive. Upon denoting by $γ\cong 1.618$ the golden ratio, he proved that there are triples $(x_0,x_1,x_2) \in \mathbb{Z}^3$ with $x_1,x_2>0$ for which the product $|x_0 + αx_1 + βx_2| \max\{|x_1|,|x_2|\}^γ$ is arbitrarily small. Although Sc…
In this paper we develop some of the ideas belonging to W.Schmidt and L.Summerer to define intermediate Diophantine exponents and split Dyson's transference inequality into a chain of inequalities for intermediate exponents. This splitting generalizes the analogous result of M.Laurent and Y.Bugeaud for Khintchine's transference inequalities.
We first recall the connection, going back to A. Thue, between rational approximation to algebraic numbers and integer solutions of some Diophantine equations. Next we recall the equivalence between several finiteness results on various Diophantine equations. We also give many equivalent statements of Mahler's generalization of the fundamental theorem of Thue. In particular, we show that the theorem of Thue--Mahler for degree $3$ implies the theorem of Thue--Mahler for arbitrary degree $\ge3$, and we relate it with a theorem of Siegel on the rational integral points of the projective line $¶^1…
We derive results on the distribution of directions of saddle connections on translation surfaces using only the Birkhoff ergodic theorem applied to the geodesic flow on the moduli space of translation surfaces. Our techniques, together with an approximation argument, also give an alternative proof of a weak version of a classical theorem in multi-dimensional Diophantine approximation due to W. Schmidt \cite{SchmidtMetrical, SchmidtMetrical2}. The approximation argument allows us to deduce the Birkhoff genericity of almost all lattices in a certain submanifold of the space of unimodular lattic…
Recently, W. M. Schmidt and L. Summerer introduced a new theory which allowed them to recover the main known inequalities relating the usual exponents of Diophantine approximation to a point in $\mathbb{R}^n$, and to discover new ones. They first note that these exponents can be computed in terms of the successive minima of a parametric family of convex bodies attached to the given point. Then they prove that the $n$-tuple of these successive minima can in turn be approximated up to bounded difference by a function from a certain class. In this paper, we show that the same is true within a sma…
Let $ζ$ be a real transcendental number. We introduce a new method to find upper bounds for the classical exponent $\widehat{w}_{n}(ζ)$ concerning uniform polynomial approximation. Our method is based on the parametric geometry of numbers introduced by Schmidt and Summerer, and transference of the original approximation problem in dimension $n$ to suitable higher dimensions. For large $n$, we can provide an unconditional bound of order $\widehat{w}_{n}(ζ)\leq 2n-2+o(1)$. While this improves the bound of order $2n-\frac{3}{2}+o(1)$ due to Bugeaud and the author, it is unfortunately slightly wea…
We establish a `mixed' version of a fundamental theorem of Khintchine within the field of simultaneous Diophantine approximation. Via the notion of ubiquity we are able to make significant progress towards the completion of the metric theory associated with mixed problems in this setting. This includes finding a natural mixed analogue of the classical Jarník-Besicovich Theorem. Previous knowledge surrounding mixed problems was almost entirely restricted to the multiplicative setup of de Mathan & Teulié [21], where the concept originated.
We show that if $k\ge 2$ is an integer and $(F_n^{(k)})_{n\ge 0}$ is the sequence of $k$-generalized Fibonacci numbers, then there are only finitely many triples of positive integers $1<a<b<c$ such that $ab+1,~ac+1,~bc+1$ are all members of $\{F_n^{(k)}: n\ge 1\}$. This generalizes a previous result (cf. arXiv:1508.07760) where the statement for $k=3$ was proved. The result is ineffective since it is based on Schmidt's subspace theorem.
A basic question of Diophantine approximation, which is the first issue we discuss, is to investigate the rational approximations to a single real number. Next, we consider the algebraic or polynomial approximations to a single complex number, as well as the simultaneous approximation of powers of a real number by rational numbers with the same denominator. Finally we study generalisations of these questions to higher dimensions. Several recent advances have been made by B. Adamczewski, Y. Bugeaud, S. Fischler, M. Laurent, T. Rivoal, D. Roy and W.M. Schmidt, among others. We review some of the…
We establish several new inequalities linking classical exponents of Diophantine approximation associated to a real vector $\underlineξ=(ξ,ξ^{2},\ldots,ξ^{N})$, in various dimensions $N$. We thereby obtain variants, and partly refinements, of recent results of Badziahin and Bugeaud. We further implicitly recover inequalities of Bugeaud and Laurent as special cases, with new proofs. Similar estimates concerning general real vectors (not on the Veronese curve) with $\mathbb{Q}$-linearly independent coordinates are addressed as well. Our method is based on Minkowski's Second Convex Body Theorem, …
Within the study of parametric geometry of numbers W. Schmidt and L. Summerer introduced so-called regular graphs. Roughly speaking the successive minima functions for the classical simultaneous Diophantine approximation problem have a very special pattern if the vector $\underlineζ$ induces a regular graph. The regular graph is in particular of interest due to a conjecture by Schmidt and Summer concerning classic approximation constants. This paper aims to provide several new results on the behavior of the successive minima functions for the regular graph. Moreover, we improve the best known …
Let $d$ be a positive integer. Let $p$ be a prime number. Let $α$ be a real algebraic number of degree $d+1$. We establish that there exist a positive constant $c$ and infinitely many algebraic numbers $ξ$ of degree $d$ such that $|α- ξ| \cdot \min\{|\Norm(ξ)|_p,1\} < c H(ξ)^{-d-1} (\log 3 H(ξ))^{-1/d}$. Here, $H(ξ)$ and $\Norm(ξ)$ denote the na{\"ı}ve height of $ξ$ and its norm, respectively. This extends an earlier result of de Mathan and Teulié that deals with the case $d=1$.
In his 1960 paper, Schmidt studied a quantitative type of Khintchine-Groshev theorem for general (higher) dimensions. Recently, a new proof of the theorem was found, which made it possible to relax the dimensional constraint and more generally, to add on the congruence condition by M. Alam, A. Ghosh, and S. Yu. In this paper, we generalize this new approach to S-arithmetic spaces and obtain a quantitative version of an S-arithmetic Khintchine-Groshev theorem. In fact, we consider a new S-arithmetic analog of Diophantine approximation, which is different from the one formerly established (see t…
We investigate approximation to a given real number by algebraic numbers and algebraic integers of prescribed degree. We deal with both best and uniform approximation, and highlight the similarities and differences compared with the intensely studied problem of approximation by algebraic numbers (and integers) of bounded degree. We establish the answer to a question of Bugeaud concerning approximation to transcendental real numbers by quadratic irrational numbers, and thereby we refine a result of Davenport and Schmidt from 1967. We also obtain several new characterizations of Liouville number…
In this paper we consider a multiparametric version of Wolfgang Schmidt and Leonard Summerer's parametric geometry of numbers. We apply this approach in two settings: the first one concerns weighted Diophantine approximation, the second one concerns Diophantine exponents of lattices. In both settings we use multiparametric approach to define intermediate exponents. Then we split the weighted version of Dyson's transference theorem and an analogue of Khintchine's transference theorem for Diophantine exponents of lattices into chains of inequalities between the intermediate exponents we define b…
The Schmidt Subspace Theorem affirms that the solutions of some particular system of diophantine approximations in projective spaces accumulates on a finite number of proper linear subspaces. Given a subvariety $X$ of a projective space $P^n$, does there exists a system of diophantine approximations on $P^n$ whose solutions are Zariski dense in $P^n$, but lie in finitely many proper subvarieties of $X$? One can gain insight into this problem using a theorem of G. Faltings and G. Wüstholz. Their construction requires the hypothesis that the sum of some expected values has to be large. This sum …
Following Schmidt, Thurnheer and Bugeaud-Kristensen, we study how Dirichlet's theorem on linear forms needs to be modified when one requires that the vectors of coefficients of the linear forms make a bounded acute angle with respect to a fixed proper non-zero subspace $V$ of $\mathbb{R}^n$. Assuming that the point of $\mathbb{R}^n$ that we are approximating has linearly independent coordinates over $\mathbb{Q}$, we obtain best possible exponents of approximation which surprisingly depend only on the dimension of $V$. Our estimates are derived by reduction to a result of Thurnheer, while their…
Let $1 < k < 33 / 29$. We prove that if $λ_1$, $λ_2$ and $λ_3$ are non-zero real numbers, not all of the same sign and that $λ_1 / λ_2$ is irrational and $\varpi$ is any real number, then for any $\eps > 0$ the inequality $ \bigl|λ_1 p_1 + λ_2 p_2^2 + λ_3 p_3^k + \varpi \bigr| \le \bigl(\max_j p_j \bigr)^{-(33 - 29 k) / (72 k) + \eps} $ has infinitely many solutions in prime variables $p_1$, ..., $p_k$.
We show that affine coordinate subspaces of dimension at least two in Euclidean space are of Khintchine type for divergence. For affine coordinate subspaces of dimension one, we prove a result which depends on the dual Diophantine type of the base point of the subspace. These results provide evidence for the conjecture that all affine subspaces of Euclidean space are of Khintchine type for divergence. We also prove a partial analogue regarding the Hausdorff measure theory. Furthermore, we obtain various results relating weighted Diophantine approximation and Dirichlet improvability. In particu…
In this article, we establish an analogue of the dimension growth conjecture, which is regarding the density of rational points on projective varieties, for compact submanifolds of $\mathbb{R}^n$ with non-vanishing curvature. We also establish the convergence theory for the set of simultaneously $ψ$-approximable points lying on a generic hypersurface, thereby settling the generalized Baker-Schmidt problem in the simultaneous setting for generic hypersurfaces. These results are obtained as consequences of an optimal upper bound for the density of rational points near manifolds of the form $\{ (…
We generalize the construction of Roy's Fibonacci type numbers to the case of a Sturmian recurrence and we determine the classical exponents of approximation $ω_2(ξ)$, $\widehatω_2(ξ)$, $λ_2(ξ)$, $\widehatλ_2(ξ)$ associated with these real numbers. This also extends similar results established by Bugeaud and Laurent in the case of Sturmian continued fractions. More generally we provide an almost complete description of the combined graph of parametric successive minima functions defined by Schmidt and Summerer in dimension two for such Sturmian type numbers. As a side result we obtain new info…
Using the Parametric Geometry of Numbers introduced recently by W.M. Schmidt and L. Summerer and results by D. Roy, we show that German's transference inequalities between the two most classical exponents of uniform Diophantine approximation are optimal. Further, we establish that the spectrum of the $n$ uniform exponents of Diophantine approximation in dimension $n$ is a subset of $\mathbb{R}^n$ with non empty interior. Thus, no Jarník-type relation holds between them.
There are two main interrelated goals of this paper. Firstly we investigate the sums \[ S_N(α,γ):=\sum_{n=1}^N\frac{1}{n\|nα-γ\|}~~~\text{and}~~~ R_N(α,γ):=\sum_{n=1}^N\frac{1}{\|nα-γ\|}\,, \] where $α$ and $γ$ are real parameters and $\|\cdot\|$ is the distance to the nearest integer. Our theorems improve upon previous results of W. M. Schmidt and others, and are (up to constants) best possible. Related to the above sums, we also obtain upper and lower bounds for the cardinality of \[ \{1\le n\le N:\|nα-γ\|<\varepsilon\} \, , \] valid for all sufficiently large $N$ and all sufficiently small …
Fix an integer $n\ge 2$. To each non-zero point $\mathbf{u}$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$, one attaches several numbers called exponents of Diophantine approximation. However, as Khintchine first observed, these numbers are not independent of each other. This raises the problem of describing the set of all possible values that a given family of exponents can take by varying the point $\mathbf{u}$. To avoid trivialities, one restricts to points $\mathbf{u}$ whose coordinates are linearly independent over $\mathbb{Q}$. The resulting set of values is called the spectrum of these exponents. We show that, in …
Building on work of Davenport and Schmidt, we mainly prove two results. The first one is a version of Gel'fond's transcendence criterion which provides a sufficient condition for a complex or $p$-adic number $ξ$ to be algebraic in terms of the existence of polynomials of bounded degree taking small values at $ξ$ together with most of their derivatives. The second one, which follows from this criterion by an argument of duality, is a result of simultaneous approximation by conjugate algebraic integers for a fixed number $ξ$ that is either transcendental or algebraic of sufficiently large degree…
In this paper we aim to prove two inequalities involving the classical approximation constants $w_{n}^{\prime}(ζ),\hat{w}_{n}^{\prime}(ζ)$ that stem from the simultaneous approximation problem $|ζ^{j}x-y_{j}|$, $1\leq j\leq n$, on the one side and the constants $w_{n}^{\ast}(ζ),\hat{w}_{n}^{\ast}(ζ)$ connected to approximation with algebraic numbers of degree $\leq n$ on the other side. We concretely prove $w_{n}^{\ast}(ζ)\hat{w}_{n}^{\prime}(ζ)\geq 1$ and $\hat{w}_{n}^{\ast}(ζ)w_{n}^{\prime}(ζ)\geq 1$. The first result is due to W. Schmidt, however our method of proving it allows to derive th…
Let $n \ge 2$ be an integer and $ξ$ a transcendental real number. We establish several new relations between the values at $ξ$ of the exponents of Diophantine approximation $w_n, w_{n}^{\ast}, \hat{w}_{n}$, and $\hat{w}_{n}^{\ast}$. Combining our results with recent estimates by Schmidt and Summerer allows us to refine the inequality $\hat{w}_{n}(ξ) \le 2n-1$ proved by Davenport and Schmidt in 1969.
The use of Hausdorff measures and dimension in the theory of Diophantine approximation dates back to the 1920s with the theorems of Jarnik and Besicovitch regarding well-approximable and badly-approximable points. In this paper we consider three inhomogeneous problems that further develop these classical results. Firstly, we obtain a Jarnik type theorem for the set of multiplicatively approximable points in the plane. This Hausdorff measure statement does not reduce to Gallagher's Lebesgue measure statement as one might expect and is new even in the homogeneous setting. Next, we establish a Ja…
We prove a theorem that generalizes Schmidt's Subspace Theorem in the context of metric diophantine approximation. To do so we reformulate the Subspace theorem in the framework of homogeneous dynamics by introducing and studying a slope formalism and the corresponding notion of semistability for diagonal flows.
We study a norm sensitive Diophantine approximation problem arising from the work of Davenport and Schmidt on the improvement of Dirichlet's theorem. Its supremum norm case was recently considered by the first-named author and Wadleigh, and here we extend the set-up by replacing the supremum norm with an arbitrary norm. This gives rise to a class of shrinking target problems for one-parameter diagonal flows on the space of lattices, with the targets being neighborhoods of the critical locus of a suitably scaled norm ball. We use methods from geometry of numbers and dynamics to generalize a res…
The present paper is concerned with equidistribution results for certain flows on homogeneous spaces and related questions in Diophantine approximation. Firstly, we answer in the affirmative, a question raised by Kleinbock, Shi and Weiss regarding equidistribution of orbits of arbitrary lattices under diagonal flows and with respect to unbounded functions. We then consider the problem of Diophantine approximation with respect to rationals in a fixed number field. We prove a number field analogue of a famous result of W. M.Schmidt which counts the number of approximates to Diophantine inequalit…
For any pair of real numbers $(i,j)$ with $0<i,j<1$ and $i+j=1$, we prove that the set of $p$-adic mixed $(i,j)$-badly approximable numbers $\bad_p(i, j)$ is 1/2-winning in the sense of Schmidt's game. This improves a recent result of Badziahin, Levesley, and Velani on mixed Schmidt conjecture.
The goal of this PhD thesis is to study a diophantine approximation problem stated by Schmidt in 1967. The problem aim to study the approximation of a subspace of $\mathbb{R}^n$ by rational subspaces, not necessarily of the same dimension, by determining the exponents of approximation associated to the various angles between the subspaces.
Fix $d\in\mathbb N$, and let $S\subseteq\mathbb R^d$ be either a real-analytic manifold or the limit set of an iterated function system (for example, $S$ could be the Cantor set or the von Koch snowflake). An $extrinsic$ Diophantine approximation to a point $\mathbf x\in S$ is a rational point $\mathbf p/q$ close to $\mathbf x$ which lies $outside$ of $S$. These approximations correspond to a question asked by K. Mahler ('84) regarding the Cantor set. Our main result is an extrinsic analogue of Dirichlet's theorem. Specifically, we prove that if $S$ does not contain a line segment, then for ev…
We initiate the study of an intrinsic notion of Diophantine approximation on a rational Carnot group $G$. If $G$ has Hausdorff dimension $Q$, we show that its Diophantine exponent is equal to $(Q+1)/Q$, generalizing the case $G=\mathbb R^n$. We furthermore obtain a precise asymptotic on the count of rational approximations. We then focus on the case of the Heisenberg group $\mathbb H^n$, distinguishing between two notions of Diophantine approximation by rational points in $\mathbb H^n$: Carnot Diophantine approximation and Siegel Diophantine approximation. After computing the Siegel Diophantin…
We establish a new connection between metric Diophantine approximation and the parametric geometry of numbers by proving a variational principle facilitating the computation of the Hausdorff and packing dimensions of many sets of interest in Diophantine approximation. In particular, we show that the Hausdorff and packing dimensions of the set of singular $m\times n$ matrices are both equal to $mn \big(1-\frac1{m+n}\big)$, thus proving a conjecture of Kadyrov, Kleinbock, Lindenstrauss, and Margulis (preprint 2014) as well as answering a question of Bugeaud, Cheung, and Chevallier (preprint 2016…
This text is devoted to simultaneous approximation to $ξ$ and $ξ^2$ by rational numbers with the same denominator, where $ξ$ is a non-quadratic real number. We focus on an exponent $β_0(ξ)$ that measures the quality of such approximations (when they are exceptionally good). We prove that $β_0$ takes the same set of values as a combinatorial quantity that measures the abundance of palindrome prefixes in an infinite word $w$. This allows us to give a precise exposition of Roy's palindrome prefix method. The main tools we use are Davenport-Schmidt's sequence of minimal points and Roy's bracket op…
